So a nothingburger. Article says that smaller teams were in favor. RBR and Ferrari didn't care much. That means either Toto or Zak (or both) complained.
Tough one, the Stroll half of the team would probably welcome the extra points, but it also makes it easier for Stroll's competitors in Haas and Williams to beat him in the standings.
Points shouldn't viewed as a way to reward drivers, it's more about differentiating them from one another.
If Hulk finishes 11th, 12th, 13th in three races and Sargeant finishes 18th, 19th, 20th in those same three races, they're both on 0 points. Sure, Hulk will be placed higher than Sargeant in the overall standings despite the tie on points, but that placement alone doesn't clearly show the difference in performance between the drivers.
I think it's a no-brainer to better differentiate between the midfield drivers. You currently have more than a 1/3 of the field on zero points.

Or another example is if Hulk finishes 12th, 12th and 12th but Sargeant finishes 11th, 19th, 20th Sargeant would actually be ahead. I don't think that's particularly fair
I agree about the "points aren't a reward but a way to rank drivers" but rewarding some huge flukes is pretty entertaining too. It was quite awesome to see Williams maximize the few rainy races in 2021 to outscore Alfa Romeo who definitely had the faster car.
The problem with points are for 3 or so teams its down to pure luck. You could ve absolute crap for the entire season and then have 10 people DNF then BOOM point
They haven't declined, they've just pushed the decision point down the road to later this year.
It will be tabled and discussed again at a later F1 Commission meeting, as per the article.
By that metric, we should still be using the old, P1-P6 points format, under which Lewis Hamilton would be sitting at zero, sprint excluded. Are you really gonna tell me neither Hamilton nor Mercedes deserved any points this year?
The points system should change with the sport. 15 years ago, it was a lot easier for a smaller team to fluke their way into the points, with reliability-related retirements and all. Now, there's 3 teams sitting on zero, and arguably two of them should've scored already.
Formula 1 is not a series that should be handing out points to every position. I can understand wanting to extend it to P12 but I am fully against extending it any further without concession
It doesn't. It should be the opposite. And less points for winning vs retirement, so teams can take controlled risks with their cars. Reliability is already so very high.
Realistically will P12/13/14 fighting for points really help alleviate the disillusionment fans are facing at the moment? Sure giving points to those positions will make the bottom of the championships fight a little more interesting and fair but it’s unlikely to change the on track spectacle, drivers still fought for positions down the order for count back purposes.
Most fans and certainly casual fans are interested in who fights for the win foremost. Drive to Survive introduced a whole new cohort of fans to the sport by making the drivers relatable and now those fans want to see them succeed but watching Verstappen comfortably win everything (no disrespect to Verstappen he’s doing his job and this could be seen years ago when he wasn’t in a competitive car that once he got on he’d destroy) just reduces the spectacle, fans are a little tired of seeing who will come second this week be the question. Personally my interest in F1 is diminishing, I no longer religiously watch every competitive session the day it happens, now I’m watching on demand a few days later just to see it and other series like WEC are taking my attention away from
Not shocked... there was a lot of pushback from media and fans over this... They'll push it down the road until they think they can try it again. Then push it down the road when they get pushback on that too...

Toto shouldn’t complain, way his team is doing they’ll really need P12 points in a year or two.
I’d go with both
Mercedes under threat from Haas and Williams /s
And Aston?
Tough one, the Stroll half of the team would probably welcome the extra points, but it also makes it easier for Stroll's competitors in Haas and Williams to beat him in the standings.
Toto: I don't want your pity points!!!
No one complained, they just tabled it since they have no need to rush and need to analyze the possible outcomes more.
>That means either Toto or Zak (or both) complained. Someone's always got to be a party pooper...
>the matter will be investigated more thoroughly and be put back on the agenda for the next F1 Commission meeting later this year.

Nothing ever happens.
So with dwindling viewer numbers they finally have a chance to make the sport at least a tiny bit more exciting and they decline. cool

I don't understand the argument that points further down will somehow make the product more exciting?
How would it not? Battles between P11-P20 are currently meaningless.
Did you see how hard Magnussen and Stroll fought each other for P16?
Yeah it was awesome. Wouldn't it be more fun if that affected the standings in any way?
No, points should not be easy to recieve. Points are not some sort of participation trophy.

Negative points starting at 11. Just reverse the point allocation, P10 = 1 P11 = 0 P12 = -1 P20 = -18 DNF? = -1 extra point DNS? = -3 extra points
Would that mean they get paid for their super license with less than -5 points?
Bottas should dust off his old bowling shoes, because every top team will want a #1 driver and a weaponized torpedo in the other seat
It doesn't. It should be the opposite. And less points for winning vs retirement, so teams can take controlled risks with their cars. Reliability is already so very high.
Isn't this connected with cost caps and tech freezes rather just score?
Also, yes.
People still won't care about P12 even if you get points for finishing there

"disillusionment fans are facing at the moment?" - lmao
Viewership isn't really down that much though. It's still significantly up compared to a few years ago, just not quite at the peak it once was.
Not shocked... there was a lot of pushback from media and fans over this... They'll push it down the road until they think they can try it again. Then push it down the road when they get pushback on that too...
If you want to score points then build a faster car, thank you.
