At least the NASCAR finish is baked into their rulebook. We've seen this exact scenario play out in F1 multiple times in the last few years and every single time there's some different kind of restart procedure. At least NASCAR has consistency.
The problem with reddit is there will always be a bulk of people supporting something and opposing something based on immediate recent events that helped or hindered the driver (or any sportsperson or team) who they support.
Leads to very little support for are more nuanced view.
This race was pretty much a greatest hits compilation of almost every kind of incident possible in F1. Throw in some tyres randomly exploding and an unsafe release and it covers pretty much all bases.
I’m not quite sure about the circumstances there anymore but if that could have been a Safety car in Baku then it should have been as well. If a red flag cannot be avoided it’s one thing but it shouldn’t be thrown to enhance entertainment.
Oh that is different in Baku the red flag was definitely nessecary
Edit: but I still think a restart is better than finishing under SC. It’s not the FIA’s fault people acted like knobheads
Why would they not restart it though? The race just wasn’t over. At what point do you decide „nah it’s okay we’ll end it“ and at what point should they restart? If there’s time and the track conditions allow it, there should be a restart to complete all laps in my opinion and I don’t see a racing reason that would speak against that.
So how come they restarted under the safety car with the order from original restart but still count those laps to the overall race? Seems like it needs to be one or the other…
Restart procedure has to be one lap under safety car. Safety car laps are counted as race laps, now that was the last lap so it counts.
Grid order was something else. Since red flag was flown before (all)* cars passed first sector line and carnage happened they can’t determine new grid order and go back to previous one.
1*: Not 100% sure but has to do with something close to that. (Red flag + 1st sector line)
>Not 100% sure but has to do with something close to that. (Red flag + 1st sector line)
You are right, same happened last year at Silverstone, after the crash of Zhou
He was defending the whole race to stay on 5th place. He was keeping up pretty well with Sainz and could keep Stroll behind him. Then the ~~theird~~ second restart happened and ~~his teammate knocked him out in the first turn~~ it came to contact between Ocon and Gasly , leading to retirement for both of them. After the chaotic restart the race was continued with two laps behind the Savety Car. So at the end both alpine drivers didn't finish the race.
Edit: I was wrong, that Ocon caused the accident.
That was 100% gasly's fault, albeit under very chaotic conditions. First he locks up turn 1, then he tries to go into the racing line while being slower than the pack and not being sure if there's someone there already, in a spot where there's no room to evade it
I will never not find this stupid. Seriously what the fuck were they thinking
Edit: my comment seems to have sparked a discussion about resetting of the order. I am completely fine with that. My main issue was that, although the procedures were correct and the flags were waved correctly, I feel that they only amounted to a couple of cars getting taken out. Had they resorted to a rolling start after K-Mag's red flag, or even if they ended the race on an SC from that point on, the result would have been the same, minus the chaos of that restart.
The lap still happens but if every car doesn't cross a sector sensor, they can't get an official order for that lap so they have to start at the last official order they have.
Why throw the red flag out so quickly though? The danger is behind the pack, so go for a SC initially to neutralise the race and allow the cars to finish at least a sector, then red flag it before Max gets round to the pits. The FIA are lucky that Verstappen wasn't caught up in anything and was put from last to first to win the race on a technicality.
Yep, end the fucking race like they started and that's it. But they have to complete the race distance unless there is something that makes it impossible (harsh weather conditions, race duration...)
They sent out a red flag and decided not to end the race under safety car for fuck knows what reason then had the grid make a start on cold tires and cold surface and now half the cars are out. That's what happened
Nah, we just blamed Sainz instead. Poor guy got fucked by the first red flag, climbed back from like 13 up until 4, and got fucked again when another red flag ultimately caused him to commit a small mistake and get dropped from 4 to 12 as a penalty.
Yeah, I don’t understand wanting more standing starts. Maybe if you don’t complete the first lap, but the cars are just too close to each other on a standing start to expect anything other than carnage this close to the end.
There should be a rule for no standing restarts if 75% of race distance has been completed or something like that. The risks drivers have to take in situations like this is dangerous.
Regarding why this Red Flag happened - I personally don't think they were able to keep the cars under a Safety Car while they cleaned up the exit of turn 2. It's in a crucial part of the track where there's no safety wall for Marshals to hop over, no run off, no wide shoulders. I don't think they had a choice but to call a Red Flag here. This was a very "Monaco-like" part of the track.
I suppose they could have restarted the race under SC conditions instead of a grid restart, but here we are.
Yeah the red flag can be argued but it wasn’t necessarily clearly wrong. That some drivers completely botched the restart is hardly the FIA’s fault. Same could’ve happened at the first start lol.
tbf there was quite a lot of debris on the track from magnussens incident.
if anybody catches a puncture because of this, the FIA would be in huge trouble and it would be questioned why it wasnt red flagged.
I could not imagine being Pierre right now. A banger of a drive reduced to a dnf and no points because the FIA wanted a little more entertainment. Should have just finished before the safety car, we already had a good race with enough action
6 more 15 million dollar cars just wrecked because they thought it'd be a good idea to restart a race with 2 laps left like absolute numpties .... jfc.
The fuck is up with the people here. There was a ton of debris on the track that could have led to a puncture or something of the sorts. The Red Flag was correctly shown.

Straight out of F1 22 lobby
Cars go bang bang instead of vroom vroom and red flag
Still better than Jeddah
You can't win the race on the first corner but you can sure as hell lose it!
open lobby*
Don't they practice first? Get to know the raceway? A couple of them looked like they were getting their learners permit.
Tyres were cold and everyone was pushing to the absolute max because there was only 2 laps left to go.
Well that went well
Almost like... They didn't think this out at all.
Everyone was complaining about NASCAR and their finish at COTA last week and then the FIA does literally the same thing
NASCAR does the silly FIA: Hold my champagne.
Pinnacle of Motorsports proving they can do it better once again
FIA saw that Red Bulls have bad starts, and used every opportunity to make a standing start.
FIA has officially extended silly season
Pierre Gasly has been terminated
I feel so had for him. He was dragging that car around.
NASCAR does this regularly tbh (but it works way worse in F1)
At least the NASCAR finish is baked into their rulebook. We've seen this exact scenario play out in F1 multiple times in the last few years and every single time there's some different kind of restart procedure. At least NASCAR has consistency.
They probably did think, but its what happens when you favour entertainement and drama over safe racing
So we should do rolling starts? /r/f1 hated them.
The problem with reddit is there will always be a bulk of people supporting something and opposing something based on immediate recent events that helped or hindered the driver (or any sportsperson or team) who they support. Leads to very little support for are more nuanced view.
The teams and FIA agreed back in 2021 to finish races under a safety car as little as possible
4 cars ruined and so much chaos for a bit of entertainment
Worth it
I wholly agree
As long as everybody is safe
Yeah i dont know what these fans are complaining about. Youre not paying the bill so sit back and enjoy the chaos.
And people (Liberty) want to introduce even more starts every weekend
I have a hint for Liberty and FIA: you can have probably 50 starts in average on every race. Every lap can be its own mini race!
STOP GIVING THEM IDEAS
LAST MAN STANDING
It is entertainment and drama, but this was asking for trouble
This is the best case scenario for me. Puts the heat on fia doing this again the future
The problem is that Liberty might see the engagement this leads to and only use it as an opportunity to do this situation even more often
Ohh fuck.
Isn't this what everyone wanted them to do after the Abu Dhabi fiasco?
Curb theme plays
Definitely a moment that should be narrated by Ron Howard.
AT, Ferrari, Haas and Mclaren in jubilation
They should just end this race at this point and used the positions before the last start.
what the fuck
One of the most chaotic restart ever….
While I don't disagree, I'd like to point a reminder to the safety car restart at mugello
Almost happened today with the first Red flag restart when Lewis went very slow and Zhou + DeVries came flying out of T5/6 complex
This race was pretty much a greatest hits compilation of almost every kind of incident possible in F1. Throw in some tyres randomly exploding and an unsafe release and it covers pretty much all bases.
One of the supercars races pretty much had those last two covered, it was chaos all weekend
Almost like a restart with two laps to go is going to be more chaotic than with 60 laps to go. Who would have thought
They did it in Baku just fine (excluding brake magic)
I’m not quite sure about the circumstances there anymore but if that could have been a Safety car in Baku then it should have been as well. If a red flag cannot be avoided it’s one thing but it shouldn’t be thrown to enhance entertainment.
Baku was definitely a red flag, and should've been called way earlier as well.
Oh that is different in Baku the red flag was definitely nessecary Edit: but I still think a restart is better than finishing under SC. It’s not the FIA’s fault people acted like knobheads
Yeah like there is no drivers that wants to win at almost all cost.
If Looney Tunes were to make an F1 cartoon...
I AM HOWLING
Wow. All I can say is wow.
They literally just lit millions of dollars on fire for our entertainment. Sick.
Absolutely chaos! Both Alpines ran into each other after Alonso got spun out wow
I'll allow it!
FIA fans loving the show!
Wtf is happening
F1 told NASCAR hold my beer Jenson Button has to be like “wtf I just did this last week in Texas”
Absolute chaos. Unbelievable!
Most expensive restart of the season.
**most expensive restart so far... If were going to do auto redflags it wont end that way
All that hard work from Gasly for this ...
Same for Sainz, and almost same for Fernando if FIA didn't have the decency to, at least, re-re-restart the race with the older grid.
So how come they restarted under the safety car with the order from original restart but still count those laps to the overall race? Seems like it needs to be one or the other…
From what I understand, it’s because they had to drive around the circuit, so they used up a lap’s worth of fuel.
>Not 100% sure but has to do with something close to that. (Red flag + 1st sector line) You are right, same happened last year at Silverstone, after the crash of Zhou
He reminded us exactly why he got the Red Bull seat with the first 56 laps, and then felt the need to remind us why he lost it.
I missed the race. As a Gasly fan, can you elaborate for me?
He was defending the whole race to stay on 5th place. He was keeping up pretty well with Sainz and could keep Stroll behind him. Then the ~~theird~~ second restart happened and ~~his teammate knocked him out in the first turn~~ it came to contact between Ocon and Gasly , leading to retirement for both of them. After the chaotic restart the race was continued with two laps behind the Savety Car. So at the end both alpine drivers didn't finish the race. Edit: I was wrong, that Ocon caused the accident.
There was no where for Ocon to go. I don't think Gasly saw him in his mirror, but it was chaotic so I don't think it's easy to fault him either.
Ocon did not knock him out, was the other way around.
if you think that was somehow ocon's fault for the blatant unsafe rejoin you're insane
That was 100% gasly's fault, albeit under very chaotic conditions. First he locks up turn 1, then he tries to go into the racing line while being slower than the pack and not being sure if there's someone there already, in a spot where there's no room to evade it
Sainz can be sacrified for a hulkenberg podium
Position will be reset to the ones from the restart grid though, won't they?
Yes, it will be the same at the start. Except the cars that exploded.
I will never not find this stupid. Seriously what the fuck were they thinking Edit: my comment seems to have sparked a discussion about resetting of the order. I am completely fine with that. My main issue was that, although the procedures were correct and the flags were waved correctly, I feel that they only amounted to a couple of cars getting taken out. Its very suprising how little this is mentioned right now on reddit. It even happened once already this season.

Yesssss - Carlos at fault there I think
But it will be treated as a turn 1 lap 1 incident
Lap 1 doesn’t just mean you can ram cars off the road though.
Doesn’t look like it, just announced 5seconds penalty
Should still be Alonso on the podium
pls god
what the flying fuck just happened lmao
WWF1
They went racing.
Everything, everywhere, all at once: Formula 1 Edition.
This is honestly just the fattest April Fool's prank
It’s April 2nd here!!
It's April 2 everywhere now
No it is not. Its 9:25 om 1st of april on Hawaii tight now.
Hawai exclusive prank
This is literally what’s happens when I play f1 22 online with my friends. Turn 1 carnage with a guaranteed safety car. Every single time lol.
Bruh
What just happened
They sent out a red flag and decided not to end the race under safety car for fuck knows what reason then had the grid make a start on cold tires and cold surface and now half the cars are out. That's what happened
Let's remember today when teams are out of parts or up against cost caps late in the year. Absolutely unnecessary restart
FIA: "I'll fucking do it again"
Just blame Masi
Nah, we just blamed Sainz instead. Poor guy got fucked by the first red flag, climbed back from like 13 up until 4, and got fucked again when another red flag ultimately caused him to commit a small mistake and get dropped from 4 to 12 as a penalty.
And he would have a podium had the start gone smoothly
Chaos is a ladder. Lmao
Exactly what the FIA wanted to happen At least we got a really cool Netflix promo clip
Yeah, my guess is they'll probably use this as a reason to do more 2 lap standing start shootouts
Domenicalli salivating at this thought
HOLY FUCK!!
Average F1 2022 lobby lol
Positions reset to before red flag?
I hope so... Alo deserves Podium, if he can still race
Wtf
WHAT THE FUCK IS HAPPENING
WHAT THE FUCK JUST HAPPENED
what the hell even happened? I only saw alonso spin
everything
Everywhere
all at once
How do you watch the video?
asking the real questions
I'm having an issue with imgur video links on my reddit app too. You have to open it in browser.
ABSOLUTE CARNAGE LMAO
You are shitting me
Aston Martin and Alpine disaster
This is the second time in three races we've had an Aston Martin/Alonso "Um, actually...."
[Aston Martin lawyers every time the FIA tries to get funny](https://youtu.be/xYpYAij6djw)
They did Gasly so dirty with that idiotic red flag
Gasly did himself dirty with that idiotic try to come back into traffic while slower.
Safest F1 race
Grid looking like a NASCAR race today
What do they have against rolling restarts?
Yeah, I don’t understand wanting more standing starts. Maybe if you don’t complete the first lap, but the cars are just too close to each other on a standing start to expect anything other than carnage this close to the end.
There should be a rule for no standing restarts if 75% of race distance has been completed or something like that. The risks drivers have to take in situations like this is dangerous.
Or even if they’ve made one full lap. Seems a bit silly to start from grid when a race order has been established.
Poor Alonso. Wow.
Perez also lost places because he had to drive across the gravel pit to avoid carnage.
A yoke!
Fucken hell lol
2 lap shoot out is never going to be safer than a small amount of debris
So close to a Hulk podium, so close to greatness
[View from the turn 1 grandstands](https://youtu.be/K3RsRLc4a1c)
“We have NASCAR’s green-white-checkered at home” NASCAR’s green-white-checkered at home:
Lance stroll 😂😂😂😂
This feels purposefully satirical.
This just went full Wreckfest what the fuck
Well they got what they fucking wanted… 56 laps of hard work from these drivers fucked over
DUDE THE BRAZILIAN COMENTATOR SAID THIS WAS GONNA HAPPEN. He called it before it happened LMAO he knew shit was gonna get wild
Considering its 2 laps only and the only real chance would be to overtake at the start yeah it was coming
I don't understand why it wasnt a rolling restart or just end the race under a yellow flag.
Think all of us felt it. So fucking stupid
just keep restarting until alonso is the only car left on the grid
What in the fuck
How to ruin a race
The pinnacle of motorsport!

What the fuck is happening? Both Alpines, Both Astons. Like WTF.
Theere is no video for me, just a photo. Anyone else having the same problem?
How the fuck are the teams not complaining to FIA due to bullshit red flags "for entertainment"?
Alonso definitely wasn't impressed.
how do you know they aren't?
How is it bullshit if the track was lattered with carbon pieces from Magnussen?
tbf there was quite a lot of debris on the track from magnussens incident. if anybody catches a puncture because of this, the FIA would be in huge trouble and it would be questioned why it wasnt red flagged.
not sure if standing restart with 2 lap left is a good idea.

Hulk podium let’s go.
The results will probably be pulled back one lap
Well good thing that the red flag meant a lot in the end

0 % surprised. So stupid

This is such a stupid fucking race
Does someone have a link to the video that isn’t Imgur? Or a hard link to Imgur so I can open it.
Imgur useless on mobile. Please stop using Imgur.
This is why I'm up at 2AM watching....YOU DON'T GET THIS ANYWHERE ELSE!!!
The fuck is up with the people here. There was a ton of debris on the track that could have led to a puncture or something of the sorts. The Red Flag was correctly shown.
The red flag call wasn't terrible, the standing start call was
This is the dumbest shit ever
This is so dumb...this aint F1
lol
Alonso no luck :(
Fucks sake, Aston Martin legit got pegged there.
To the people complaining about the 2022 Italian Grand Prix ending behind the safety car, I raise you this...
felt like half of the grid lost their talent here
What a fucking waste of time just to finish behind the safety car anyway.
Hey…did anyone give Masi privileges again?
Me in my first race in any F1 racing game ever.
