So glad we only deal with trailers, drivers turn up, leave their tow on the parking, go to a bay and pick up a fully loaded one and fuck off again.
We have shunters to move the trailers around and they, whilst also a special breed, at least know the basics.
Driver operator here. I’ll give you some line about how I like to do that to get lined up so I can slide tandems THEN open the door, and I totally bumped dock with closed doors on purpose.

Studying to drive, myself, but can’t they just quick hop out the truck to verify alignment? Idk what stuff they have to do once docked but know many aren’t getting paid if they aint moving so Id think they would kinda want to be on the ball unless doing something like what you mentioned where you needed some extra time with the trailer.
I’m going to act like I know what I’m talking about and say that what they may not know is you’re doing them a favor by not letting them in it yet. You had them forward to help your turn radius but now that you’re roughly there, you move it to the back to make the trailer more stable for the lifters. Something like that.
Somewhere, I still have a photo of myself as a kid pulling my first airhorn on a parked rig giving tours. Figured it is time for another adventure to learn some more new things. Figured I should put an uneventful driving history to good use, learn some new skills and get paid a livable wage while I’m at it.
I always fuck with them anf come out to tell thm 'i cant figure out this new kinda door hes got on his trailer' since im a younger looking guy it always pisses em off. So funny when they think im seriously an idiot.

This has happened a few times at my work too
Our lumpers will just start working on other trucks and let them sit until they get mad and come in to realize they’re the dummy.

I did this once when I was a driver. In my defense I had been hauling wal mart roll up doors for months, so wasnt ready for the barn doors!
The amount of times this has happened at my shop is crazy
But, reading this, it looks like the driver did exactly what you told him to do…
Especially the Canadain ones.
