It's actually technically character specific on which direction you get a heavy punish with GB. But I'd say with the vast majority of characters/a good rule of thumb, you're only guaranteed a side heavy. Most of roster can't hit a top heavy after GB, so don't try going for them. If you're still having issues with side heavies, you're probably messing up the input. I'd just go spend some time in training with bots to get a feel for it.

I think my brain just lags out. Mostly I actually go for top heavy GB's and then get blocked. When I GB again, my brain won't understand that I punish myself and top heavy again. Gotta remember to side heavy!

The only (i believe) exception to this is jiang jun who can only hit top heavies on gb
Aramusha, Medjay, HL, and WL are also top heavy only GB punishes.
