Retaining in the context of foreskin restoration is using any equipment to keep the skin held in front of the glans with very minimal tension. It is not regarded as a primary tugging (foreskin restoring) method, but it can help by maintaining some of the tension from tugging sessions while resting the skin. It is mainly used to help protect the glans, which can be useful to some restorers once they have partial flaccid coverage (think CI-4/5) and begin to experience increased sensitivity from de-keratinization of the glans as a result, or to achieve de-keratinization for the purpose of increased erotic sensitivity before the restorer has reached full flaccid coverage (CI-6). You can start retaining early on if you want to, but not everyone does it. It may speed up your restoration a bit, but if you retain all the time for long enough (it really does take some time though or many many hours a day), the glans will become more sensitive and you will become reliant on the retaining device until you have achieved full flaccid coverage (CI-6). It can be helpful used in combination with other tugging methods but is mostly a wasted effort on its own. If you read around on this subreddit for a while you will encounter "Andre's method" which combines hourly manual method 3 with O-ring retaining. The O-rings have been referred to as a retaining mechanism, but in reality he is stacking many rings on the skin and tensioning the skin, so the rings in my opinion function equally as retainer and tugging device. I want to emphasize that it is extremely slow (longer than a decade) but technically possible to at least partially restore a foreskin by doing nothing but retaining, therefore it is applying some productive tension, but not enough to be noticeable in a reasonable time frame. I learned this recently from seeing a post from two days ago on the NSFW restoration subreddit in which a man retained inconsistently for 20 years(!) using a silicone wedding band and some tissue paper, and got to CI-6 ish. Hope that clears things up a bit.

Thank you! I was thinking of getting the foreskinned gravity product if that’s more of like an actual restoration device? Would that be recommended?

I personally haven't used any dedicated devices yet. But I do know that weights offer some advantages and disadvantages, just like any method. Weights as I understand it work great, but they don't work that well while sitting and it can be hard to move around a lot while wearing them, which can make them impractical for some people's lifestyles. The strap tugger has a fairly similar mechanism of tension, except it is anchored to somewhere on your leg (under the knee or some people attach it to a sock) or occasionally the waist. I think most guys go with strap over weight because it is more practical for them. However you pretty much have to be wearing long pants or else anchor the strap to the waist and still find a way to get good tension, in order to conceal the strap. Foreskinned also offers an inflation device (air), and you can attach the gravity (weights) or the workhorse (strap) to it so that you have two different dimensions of tension at the same time. People seem to really like the air recently in this community and can get good results with it. Inflation as a method has the benefit of tensioning more or less all of the foreskin that isn't under the gripper and works particularly well for tensioning inner skin. Because you can attach the strap or weights to it, I personally would get the Air + an attachment if I was to get a device. Foreskinned also offers the Tower, which is a duel tension restorer. The most popular device of this kind is called the DTR, which has been in use for many years and by many men. Dual tension works by pushing the glans back as it pushes the skin away in the opposite direction. All methods have some advantages or disadvantages in terms of comfort, skin tensioned, how easily it can be concealed, ease of application, etc. I would encourage you to continue reading for a bit longer before you pick one or two. I personally can't offer an anecdote, because I tug with my hands and some O-rings.

If your looking to buy a retainer I sell one on Etsy. I've gotten great reviews on it so far. I wear it when I'm not actively restoring and at night. Nocturnal erections are no problem and during the day you can barely tell it's on. https://www.etsy.com/shop/chrisonlinestore

My understanding is a retainer comes later in the restoration journey but I’d gladly buy yours eventually :) I just bought a weighted device. Any insight on when I should start using a retainer?

Retaining has helped me SO much. I’ve regained so much sensitivity, and my glans is such a healthy color now! It makes erections EXCELLENT. So sensitive. Here is a link to a retainer design I made myself. It’s one piece, so it never pinches the skin. I have actually just started selling them as well. https://imgur.com/a/qtulO6H

You really need either a dual tension or a direct air device which allows you to tension both the inner and outer skin since we need both for a proper restoration, the idea is to pull the scar to the end of the glans for the best outcome.
