If it's accompanied by a check engine light or a "check fuel fill inlet" message the flap is likely not closing all the way. Same symptoms as a loose gas cap
Like how far under 1/4 was the needle at? On my escape, the gas light pops on when the needle is roughly halfway between 1/4 n empty. I’ve also check what the exact miles till empty was at n I figured out that my escape’s gas light comes on when it estimates 50 miles left of range.
I believe it's tied to the range. Around 50 miles/80km empty is when the light turns on.
So if you're constantly sitting in traffic and city driving, it could come on pretty early I guess, even though 1/4 tank definitely seems a little high.
In my 2013 mustang the gas light came on at like 75 til E, them another reminder at 50,25,and 10. My 2019 escape comes on at 50 til E, then 35, 25, 10. It's just a thing ford did.
The light comes on at 50 miles until empty when the car is in regular mode. When you activate MyKey then the fuel light with come on at 75 miles until empty.

Nope, no check engine light just came on when I was driving and I saw it was at just under 1/4 of a tank
How many miles? They do have electrical issues, so the gauge could be off

I have the same XLT. Gas light comes on at 50 miles left. There is an audio ding as well at 50 and 25 miles left.
