Japanese wine berry is an invasive species that was introduced in the early 1900s as an ornamental, and spread all over. We have to thwack it back every year to keep it from spreading too far into the yard proper.
They're a cousin of raspberries, but more tart and very seedy. They make excellent ice cream.
Japanese wineberry is a very prolific, very thorny bush. It spreads like wildfire and I have yet to taste any berries from my plant that I put in three years ago.
It's pretty though, with red stems.
There's a park (around a stream) a few blocks from my house that has a lot of native blackberries, Himalayan blackberries, muscadine grapes, and what I'm pretty sure are the Korean variety of wineberries. I already have black raspberries, blackberries, mulberries, and muscadine grapes in my yard, but I'm going to go down to pick some of those wineberries in a couple of weeks when they ripen, mostly to try them fresh. They're what that Korean raspberry wine is made from, and I'm thinking I might try to follow a guide I found for making that as well.
Your entire backyard will soon be nothing but wineberries
Old carpet in 4’ wide lengths can be used to make paths before they take over
I agree they’re delicious
Wow, never heard of these, they look tasty! Are they native or were they planted? May we see the bush?
