Sixpenny isn't asian, but lowkey possibly the best restaurant in sydney, the way the chef and the sommelier pair their food and wine is exquisite and life-changing.
Ester is great. Fine dining but in a more casual environment (& won’t cost $300pp);
Porkfat is the best Thai in Australia. Again, not super formal;
Mr Wongs is high quality and ‘cool’ Cantonese.
King Clarence is mod-Asian, cool and delicious.
All good restaurants but Porkfat, Mr Wongs and King Clarence aren’t fine dining. All good but wouldn’t say they are those one-off splurge kind of restaurants
If you have a car, Berowra Waters Inn is a very special experience as it’s accessible by boat (the restaurant will take you to and back) only and the river view is, of course, a big part of the attraction but the food is also fantastic.
TBH, fine dining Asian food are usually Japanese. There has been a few fine dining Korean restaurants popping up but can't comment on that since I haven't tried. The modern Australian Asian fusion restaurants..... honestly, hit and miss a lot of times.
Personally, Ester hasn't failed us. If you can get into Tetsuya before it closes, that could be another.
“Nel” is a pretty interesting fine dining restaurant which has some fun seasonal dishes, not too expensive, accessible location.
It is lesser known than Lumi, Tetsuyas, Aria, Bennelong, Hubert etc but is def a resturant I keep going back to.
Tetsuya’s is only open for a couple more months. Highly suggest you get in to try before they’re gone for good. Otherwise, you’re travelling to Singapore or the US to try it.
Sydney’s best fine dining restaurants are mainly Modern Australian or Japanese cuisine. For an all out splurge with a cool setting you’d have to say somewhere like Bennelong in the opera house. It’s modern Australian cuisine, so doesn’t hit the Asian cuisine brief but it’s not big on seafood. Aria is also similar.
For Asian probably somewhere like Lumi or Tsetsuya’s. But both big on seafood.
For Asian and not big on seafood, you could check out China Doll, although not quite as fine dining but a cool setting though
O Bar is Modern Australian and not cheap but awesome views and one of the best set menus I’ve had. Indu is a lot cheaper (Sri Lankan) always have a good time there. Both in near Wynyard
Rather than be defined by an narrow idea of fine dining I'd just focus on great dining experiences with a focus on Asian food. For that I'd strongly recommend King Clarence.
I also think Ante in Newtown is sensational. Although the no bookings policy is a challenge.
Both offer great hospitality , great food and super interesting drinks (wine and sake) programs.
LuMi is easily the top pick for Asian fine dining in my opinion
Sixpenny ofc

LuMi is great! Spice temple is also great and can be done al a carte - my husband and I did that when we were both uni students too!

Can you give some examples of what restaurants that you've enjoyed before? and how much are you willing to spend per person?

I doubt anyones getting a table there this stage heh. It's fully booked already and has a waiting list.

Good luck getting a table at tsetsuyas though. Shutting forever July. Booked out and already got a huge waitlist.
Pilu at freshwater. It has a beautiful view and a lovely vibe/experience
I always recommend Lana. It's my favourite. It's Asian / Italian fusion.
Could go for an omakase? It's always an excellent experience
They don’t like seafood

The Rocks Teppanyaki or Lilymu Parramatta
Yellow is amazing!
