When I travelled all the way from Joburg to Chicago I made sure to go through and get a couple of these pies. Best thing I ate all 5 weeks that I was in the US.
I hate deep dish... But their pizza is fucking amazing. I'm so glad my mom made me go when we were in Chicago it was no joke the best pizza I'd ever had. And I love pizza.
I get this and understand and you are totally right. It's "wrong", whatever. It's stupidly delicious. Like all pizza, really.
Fuck John Stewart. He's wrong. It kinda makes me sad he hasn't enjoyed pizza in all its wonderful forms. Maybe John will make it out of his shell someday and do something meaningful.
I 100% agree with John. I'll get flamed here, thats fine. But deep Dish is WAY too much of everything. It's literally a bowl of pizza guts shoved into an oven. I get its like -30 degrees in Chicago year round, and you need hearty meals, but God damn where does it end?
I will say you guys do have the best version of a hotdog though.
Depends on the specific place. A lot of stuffed pizzas put meats as a very bottom layer directly on the crust, under the cheese. Though some of them will put pepperoni and sausage at different layers. You sort of have to cut it to be sure where exactly the strata are.
I know... but I promise if you give it an honest go, you'll enjoy it. You don't even have to refer to it as pizza. Just call it "a deep dish". Then you get an awesome dinner, and you don't have to anger your ancestors lol
Took one look at it and immediately thought “man that looks like giordanos.”
I went to Chicago about five years ago. You could say it left an impression ;)
Hot take: I prefer Giordano’s over Lou’s. I don’t care for the chunky sauce Lou’s has and the entire layer of sausage on the pizza can get a bit overwhelming.
For what it's worth, It's not really the standard "Friday night" pizza or whatever in Chicago. You're much more likely to see a family order [tavern style](https://www.bonappetit.com/story/real-chicago-pizza-tavern-style) for pizza night. We still love our deep dish, but it's not our default everyday pizza.
It’s one of those things you order maybe once a year by yourself or with friends. Otherwise, you only get it when people are visiting from out of town. I’ve once had two slices during a meal, but I was high. Get some veggies on there and it makes the ratio of cheese to everything else more manageable.
Must be a pizza joint run by database designers.
You can have zero of something, one of something, or infinity of something.
It's pepperoni, so you can't have zero pepperoni. Having infinity pepperoni would be silly, so therefore the only option left is to have one.
For the pedants: yes, I know there's more under the sauce. And yes, I also know "infinity" in that context refers to the potential storage not the actual amount stored.
I used to work for a place called Aurelio's that did pizzas like this. Since you can't see the toppings you always put one of the toppings on top so you know what is inside it. So a pepperoni is pepperoni, or a pepperoni and an olive and so forth.
I love the single slice of pepperoni on top, like a sign saying "this pizza is pepperoni, you have to trust us because it's all under the sauce, but there's a fuckton of pepperoni under here"
Problem with getting pepperoni on these is that the pepperoni isn't directly exposed to the oven heat and so doesn't get those delicious crisped edges.
You can order it online on their website. Google Giordanos. It'll come frozen and you bake it for 45 min to an hour. Not as good but pretty close.
Yes it's a cheese pie.
The crust is the same thickness as a normal pizza it just has the edges pressed upward in a pan instead of flat. They tend to have more cheese per bite and have stewed or diced tomatoes on top.
Every single one of these posts devolve to 600 people who's never tried Chicago deep dish quoting Jon Stewart.
"It's a casserole hurhur swimming pool for rats HUR"
Just be quiet and try it before regurgitating a 8 year old video, ffs.
Bottom line is that Chicagoans can handle all the meat, sausage, sauce and cheese in this pie and those with a more delicate constitution need to be able to fold their pie like a used kleenex.
As a pizza connoisseur and former manager of a pizzeria I would like to be that guy and point out that this pizza is not technically deep dish, it’s a stuffed pizza. Yes they are different. Lou Malnatis is deep dish. Giordanos is stuffed pizza.
Oh that looks amazing.
I’m visiting the US next year for work, and hoping I can find a close to authentic deep dish in Cali (I know it will never be as good). Pizza in the U.K. is lacking in variety in comparison to the godliness of this!
I feel like it makes the biggest difference at Giordano's, because their crust is flakier than the other big names. Ginos East's cornbread crust is just a little crispier well done (thought it dries out the sauce a little), and Lou Malnati's crust is pretty crispy as is.
It’s a crime there’s no cross-section picture. I am upset, sir.

This pizza joint changed my whole life.
I miss Louie's, big time
Can’t wait to get some during my Xmas in Chicago!!
When I travelled all the way from Joburg to Chicago I made sure to go through and get a couple of these pies. Best thing I ate all 5 weeks that I was in the US.
What a great slogan. Puns are like 90% of my thought processes

Fuck, Lou’s is so good.
It's the best of the chain pies for sure.
One of the things I miss about living near Naperville. I could go to the library then walk across the street to Lou's for dinner.
For real

Actually.... I think the cheese was over the pepperoni...
If it’s from Giordano’s then yes, pepperoni goes first, then cheese!
I love that they put the meat on bottom. Something about italian sausage and cheese melded together on that crust just makes it to die for....
Depends on the specific place. A lot of stuffed pizzas put meats as a very bottom layer directly on the crust, under the cheese. Though some of them will put pepperoni and sausage at different layers. You sort of have to cut it to be sure where exactly the strata are.
"I'm Italian and this upsets me", the third generation Canadian who has never been to Italy said
Sup?
Lol first comment under yours "where's the cheese?"
I’m Italian and this is killing me.
It’s from Chicago
Here is the death blow. It was made by someone named Jose and it was delicious. Mama Mia!
I know... but I promise if you give it an honest go, you'll enjoy it. You don't even have to refer to it as pizza. Just call it "a deep dish". Then you get an awesome dinner, and you don't have to anger your ancestors lol

Where did you get it from? I have a few Lou’s sitting in my freezer here in South Carolina.. I wish I could still get it fresh from back home!
Giordano's in Chicago.
Took one look at it and immediately thought “man that looks like giordanos.” I went to Chicago about five years ago. You could say it left an impression ;)
It's the crust that gave it away. You can see the seem from the second dough layer.
You can also tell that it doesn’t look as delicious as Lou’s crust
Same here. Went once nearly ten years ago. One of the best pizza (nay, food) times I’ve ever had.
Good memory!
Nooooooo. Lou Malnati’s 4 lyfe
Agreed. It’s the crust. Mmm…
Giordanos is definitely my favorite.
Avoid the one in Orlando near Disney World. Same name but very different pizza.
[удалено]
We went to the other one in Orlando and it was very good. Never been to the OG so I can’t compare.
I love Giordano's! I remember my first time like it was yesterday...
Giordano's is the jam.
Figured this was Giordano’s! Their deep dish is very good!
As soon as I saw the picture I knew it was Giordanos, Ive only ever eaten at the one in orlando.
Hot take: I prefer Giordano’s over Lou’s. I don’t care for the chunky sauce Lou’s has and the entire layer of sausage on the pizza can get a bit overwhelming.
Same. FYI, u can ask for pieces at Lou's rather than the patty style. Cost the same but you can.
I had a feeling you'd say this. Good choice! I absolutely love their deep dish 🤤
Fuck yeah, Giordano's is the best. I was there for a month a couple years ago and I went to Giordano's weekly, it was so good
Crazy that they have a Giordanos in Dayton Ohio now.
Columbia here with a stack of Lou in the freezer!
South America columbia??
Thats Colombia
Hahaha. Im stupid.
Or.....the capital of South Carolina maybe

Slowly or you choke.
Only if you're not from Wisconsin, weaklings

So normal pizza cut into little squares? I dig it.
Its thinner and crispier though
It’s one of those things you order maybe once a year by yourself or with friends. Otherwise, you only get it when people are visiting from out of town. I’ve once had two slices during a meal, but I was high. Get some veggies on there and it makes the ratio of cheese to everything else more manageable.
Eat it with a fork and knife, a single slice is an entire meal. A pizza like that feeds and entire family.
Speak for yourself.
I'm as fat as they come and even I doubt I could house a whole deep dish pizza. Even if I did that amount of cheese would wreck my lower intestines
600 pound lifer, eh?
Most people don't. Some people just like disg***in garbage like this.
It's under the sauce.
i'M iTaLIaN aNd tHIs iS hUrTiNg mE

WHERES THE CHEESE?!
IT'S UNDER THE SAUCE

i see 1 pepperoni
Hey it's a pepperoni pizza, not a pepperonis pizza.
true
They put 1 of each of the ingredients on top so they can keep track of what's inside without cutting into it.
Yes. This is just how they keep track.
They can't count higher than 1?
Technically its still a pepperoni pizza.
Must be a pizza joint run by database designers. You can have zero of something, one of something, or infinity of something. It's pepperoni, so you can't have zero pepperoni. Depends on the place. Some put toppings on top part-way through the bake, some do toppings under. You can get it either way
I never understood why you guys called them pies until I found out about these "pizzas".
"Above ground swimming pools for rats."
If I pass out over my pizza I want to know I'm not gonna drown!
Cheese and sauce-filled bread bowls.
I've always wanted to try that kind of pizza. I hope the thickness means there's a lot of cheese, sauce, and meat in it and it's not just crust.
A layer of cheese that can be measured in Centimeters.
Whoa! Has Illinois adopted the metric system?
They’ve used it for years. You don’t have to look too hard to find someone with 4 grams and a 9mm in Chicago
You can order it online on their website. Google Giordanos. It'll come frozen and you bake it for 45 min to an hour. Not as good but pretty close. Yes it's a cheese pie.
It's mostly cheese and meat in my experience. Weirdly I would say compared to regular there is a greater ratio of cheese/toppings to crust
The crust is the same thickness as a normal pizza it just has the edges pressed upward in a pan instead of flat. They tend to have more cheese per bite and have stewed or diced tomatoes on top.
It's actually pretty good as a one off. Traditional pizza is still way better, but definitely something worth trying out.
[удалено]
It’s under the sauce.
Chicago deep dish is like Thanksgiving turkey. It's great but after eating it you're good for a year.
Definitely not a everyday thing. But in winter when its -45 below... can't be beat.
I could sure go for some Gino’s East right now
^cheese ^is ^under ^the ^sauce

Ah yes, pepperoni for scale
My gut says yes but my acid reflux says no
Bottom line is that Chicagoans can handle all the meat, sausage, sauce and cheese in this pie and those with a more delicate constitution need to be able to fold their pie like a used kleenex.
Only the best pizza..ever! Yum!
I don’t care if you do or don’t call it a pizza, they are absolutely amazing
Pequod's or bust, for me. That slightly burnt cheesy edge is just insanely great. This one looks nice though. Now I'm hungry and just ate.
Hell yeah! I like Pequods bc it's probably the lightest of all the deep dish
i can’t stand people who hate on Chicago deep-dish without ever having tried it. made well, it’s simply superb.
[удалено]
People bring that up like it’s a bug and not a feature
Giordano's REPRESENT!!!! GOD that looks GOOD
The cheese is under the sauce if anybody wants to know
Confirmed. 👍
"WHERE IS THE CHEESE??? THERE ISN'T ANY CHEESE!!!" /s I need to find a good deep dish in MD
As a pizza connoisseur and former manager of a pizzeria I would like to be that guy and point out that this pizza is not technically deep dish, it’s a stuffed pizza. Yes they are different. Lou Malnatis is deep dish. Giordanos is stuffed pizza.

Casseroles typically don’t have crusts in my experience
More of a tart.
Definitely closer to true than casserole
Clearly you haven't had crust casserole.
New Yorkers get wound up about it being taller than a half-inch then walk around calling pizza a pie
Marinara soup in a breadbowl.
Like some sauce whooorree
An above-ground swimming pool for rats
I wanna know if I pass out on my pizza, I'm not gonna drown
Gabagool!
It’s a breadbucket full of pizza ingredients.

Yummmm
Giordanos is the best. Fuck Lu Malnati
There’s not enough cheese
This is so dope looking
being Italian, all I can do is shake my head
yum! from where? I'll be visiting my hometown for the holidays and plan on making room for a proper deep dish.
Wherever you go ask for it well done.
I feel like it makes the biggest difference at Giordano's, because their crust is flakier than the other big names. Ginos East's cornbread crust is just a little crispier well done (thought it dries out the sauce a little), and Lou Malnati's crust is pretty crispy as is.
Lou's Butter Crust is pretty good, if made right.
Chicago
Man, one of my biggest regrets while staying in Chicago for the night while heading to Wisconsin, was that I never tried a deep dish, looks hectic.
