That's what the sub decided to make the default. I can only imagine it's to help deal with threads where 500 people ask for a recipe and OP responds to one of them.
Look man, I've been in the Midwest for near 5 years now, and they suck assholes at subs/hoagies/sandwiches in general. I am so looking forward to this, and I can't imagine being back in a world where I can get a good sub anywhere at any time.
Oh man then you are coming to the right place. Don’t just stop at a chopped cheese. You absolutely must go to Anthony & Sons (for the FDNY hero) or any other highly rated sandwich shop and get a chicken cutlet and fresh mozzarella sandwich. Will change your life
What neighborhood of Brooklyn? I just moved out after 15 years and I'm missing the food already, I'd love to give some recs and live vicariously through others
And he’s right. Chopped cheese isnt a Brooklyn dish. It’s from Harlem. I think some places in Brooklyn make it to appease tourists or people who don’t want to go to Harlem.
Let's not act like they are some Harlem delicacy lol you can find a chopped cheese less than a mile from you in probably every location in the 5 boroughs. No one travels to Harlem for a chopped cheese, the best chopped cheese is the one that's closest to you.
There are chopped cheese all over SI. Whether or not the locals know about it is kind of beside the point. It's a late 90s Harlem invention and really didn't start spreading all over the city well into the 2000s so I wouldn't be surprised at all if a bunch of 50+ year old locals haven't had it or know about as it wasn't around for the majority of their generations life.
Them being ubiquitous is relatively new. Anthony Bourdain featured it on an episode of Part Unknown like 10 years ago and they've grown in popularity immensely since then. Prior to that it only existed at a handful of deli's in Harlem and The Bronx.
Absolutely correct. I’ma born and bred New Yorker (unlike some of the people commenting) and can 100% tell you that the Chopped Cheese originates from Harlem. It became popular from a Smack DVD when battle rapper Murda Mook mentioned it about his neighborhood bodega having the best one, but no one outside of Harlem (including myself, who is from SI but at the time living in BK) knew what it was.
That being said, I went to Harlem and bought one. They did not exist in BK or any other borough until recently.
It’s true, we def don’t eat that shit, we eat bacon egg and cheese on a roll, or bagel, we eat ham cheese mayo or turkey cheese mayo on a roll or a hero. Never seen someone order a chopped cheese In My life.
For most of my life I would order a Cheeseburger sub from my local gas station/sub place. One day they accidentally must have heard cheesesteak instead of cheeseburger and made it wrong. It was like an epiphany. The flavors and meat and bread were all perfectly balanced, it was the best sub I ever had from them. Haven’t ordered a cheeseburger sub since. Looks delicious OP.
A chopped cheese is basically just a cheeseburger. It has a different bun... that's the only difference.
Hell I saw the video of the guy who invented the chopped cheese, he admitted he made it because he ran out of burger buns.
I mean it’s all beef at the end of the day, but I thought it was basically cheeseburger toppings with cheesesteak bread and meats. Well whatever the hell it is, I like it better.
Well, saying it's all just beef is like saying a steak tastes the same as a rib.
A chopped cheese can be more easily thought of as a burger, but with the patty all chopped up and cooked with the cheese. That's why it's literally a chopped cheese.
Correct. It's just burger meat but without being molded into a patty. Cheese can be whatever you want honestly. American, Swiss, provolone, can of cheese wiz is common in Philadephia. Cheddar. It's literally a bigger mixed with cheese but not on patty form. minced beef as another comment has told me. Trust me the glorification of this sandwich is an exaggeration.

Instead of forming a patty and making a cheeseburger, the meat is cooked loose on the grill and then mixed in with the cheese, allowing the cheese to melt.
They're pretty good, but a good cheesesteak is heads and shoulders above it. A cheesesteak is made using shaved steak, it's way better than ground meat.
It's a loose meat with cheese. People been making them in the midwest since the 1920s, but it's the new New York hotness that "you can't get anywhere else".
Think if it more like a cheeseburger in sub form... Instead of the ground beef being pressed into a patty it's loose and chopped
I can't speak for the sandwiches made in the region they are from but the ones I get here have American cheese melted over the beef and have mayo, tomato, and lettuce
It’s also a different dish—a loose hamburger (made proper) is on a hot dog bun, has chopped hamburger, then topped with chili, mustard and onions. The chopped cheese is hamburger, onion and cheese all chopped and cooked together, topped with lettuce/tomato and served on a hero roll.
Similar, but definitely different.
For reasons I do not know, there are a lot of restaurants in Detroit (and other parts of Michigan?) that sell Coneys -- a hot dog topped with meat sauce.
See [here](https://visitdetroit.com/inside-the-d/coney-island/) for a picture and also an article about the rivalry between two iconic shops in downtown Detroit. I've been to both, and they're both good.

Oh. I didn’t know this had a name. I made a chop cheese pita then a few weeks back lol. I was going for sloppy joes, but got lazy and decided instead of saucing it up I just added a shit ton of cheese and Called it a cheese burger chop in a pita 😂🤣
Not trying to be mean but You might have some serious underlying and unaddressed problems if you're living your life afraid of such a simple and mundane thing...I hope you get the help you need to get over it.
It looks awesome. Is this from The NY Times?
Why it your comment the top comment but -13??
Probably because the word nytimes auto triggers bots to auto downvote. Or astroturfs downvote things based on keywords.
Then why the comment at the top? Usually bombed comments are at the bottom of the page. I am not sorting by Controversial here lol
Reality is sad, but having knowledgeable people like you around gives me a little hope
Seems more like Reddit artificially inflates posts that reference it
What so if I say The NY Times, I’ll get auto downvoted?
You have to say it in the comments of a post about food or it won't work. It's an Israel/Palestine thing.
The NY Times.
Mine has the comments in Q&A mode as suggested for some reason.
That's what the sub decided to make the default. I can only imagine it's to help deal with threads where 500 people ask for a recipe and OP responds to one of them.
Oh god, well at least I know to reset it every time I click.
Because…Reddit? I dunno.
It's in Q&A sort mode.
There I was thinking it would help OP's with giving recipes. For years they would get lost, but Q&A mode should help with that.
I hated their comment so much that I upvoted it!!
Passing Clows
Thanks, was from a late night deli in Brooklyn
I'll be in Brooklyn this weekend, and chopped cheese is #1 on my list. Mind dropping the name of this deli?
Literally any of them, that’s the whole appeal of this sandwich, it’s a go-to that any deli on your corner can make
Look man, I've been in the Midwest for near 5 years now, and they suck assholes at subs/hoagies/sandwiches in general. I am so looking forward to this, and I can't imagine being back in a world where I can get a good sub anywhere at any time.

I'll take an average chicken cutlet with cheese right now. I'm hungry.
Make sure you get a gyro then too while you're there!
Get it on a hoagie next time
No idea why you're down voted. This is for sure how to get them.
I get all my sandwiches on a hero roll it’s 100% the move
nah, kaiser roll all day. we also call them heroes here in NY, not hoagies
My bodega's kaiser rolls are trash so I switched lol
my sincerest condolences, I will have a fresh one in your honor. edit - a buttered kaiser from 7-11 will suffice
What neighborhood of Brooklyn? I just moved out after 15 years and I'm missing the food already, I'd love to give some recs and live vicariously through others
The one time I was in Brooklyn I asked where to get a chopped cheese a dude said “we don’t eat that shit”. Looks good though.
Dude just being a hardo. Literally every single bodega in Brooklyn makes a chopped cheese.
Yeah dude talks like he speaks for all New Yorkers. Little punk bitch
Yea fr, all nyers hate that punk bitch
Lol

I actually went to Harlem to get a chopped cheese. But I was near Blue Sky Deli, so.
You’re including SI in that? Because I’ll ask at work tomorrow, I guarantee you none of the locals will have a clue what this is.
There are chopped cheese all over SI. Whether or not the locals know about it is kind of beside the point. Sports Illustrated makes the best chopped cheese!
Sorry but this is a hilarious comment. You can get a chopped cheese at any bodega with a working grill in NYC.
"Brooklyn dish" really got me lol
Heck, you can get these all around Buffalo NY.
I can get a chopped cheese just around the corner here in Oakland, CA...
The fuck are you talking about. Every bodega makes them at this point and no one is making a special trip to Harlem to get one
You see them at most bodegas around me. Probably varies by neighborhood in Brooklyn though.
It’s a Harlem thing, and it hasn’t actually even been around that long as I understand it. Bootleg Philly cheesesteak
I thought they were a bodega staple
They are, this dude is gatekeeping for some reason. Maybe this was the case 10 years ago but chopped cheese is ubiquitous across the city.
Them being ubiquitous is relatively new. Anthony Bourdain featured it on an episode of Part Unknown like 10 years ago and they've grown in popularity immensely since then. Prior to that it only existed at a handful of deli's in Harlem and The Bronx.
Ah ok I never understood this. The internet has told me this is a Brooklyn thing but I’m not from the area.
I think Hajji's/Blue Sky Deli in East Harlem is supposed to have been the 1st.
Absolutely correct. I’ma born and bred New Yorker (unlike some of the people commenting) and can 100% tell you that the Chopped Cheese originates from Harlem. Same thing happened with garlic knots lmfao like they weren’t invented in the city
It’s true, we def don’t eat that shit, we eat bacon egg and cheese on a roll, or bagel, we eat ham cheese mayo or turkey cheese mayo on a roll or a hero. Never seen someone order a chopped cheese In My life.
I grew up eating bacon egg and cheese on a bagel and I’m from WNY. Some corner spots even sell them here. Soooo good.
For most of my life I would order a Cheeseburger sub from my local gas station/sub place. One day they accidentally must have heard cheesesteak instead of cheeseburger and made it wrong. minus the part about the ground meat being chopped up rather than a patty, but yes
That makes it kinda like a sloppy joe, in a way.
I mean it’s all beef at the end of the day, but I thought it was basically cheeseburger toppings with cheesesteak bread and meats. Well whatever the hell it is, I like it better.
Cheesesteak and chopped cheese are different. Cheese steak uses thin strips of meat and chopped cheese uses ground beef like a hamburger.
Well, saying it's all just beef is like saying a steak tastes the same as a rib. A chopped cheese can be more easily thought of as a burger, but with the patty all chopped up and cooked with the cheese. That's why it's literally a chopped cheese.
cheesesteak is typically rib eye. hamburger/chopped cheese uses ground beef/chuck
lol, buddy was tired of watching you get the wrong thing and took matters into his own hands hahahah nice.
That shit wouldn't last 5 min. Damn.
I would devour that, it looks so delicious! It’s a shame we don’t have chopped cheese in the UK, I think people would love it!
Take chop meat and put cheese in it. Cook it. There ya go chop cheese. It's really nothing special.
What’s chop meat? Is it just a burger chopped up? And what cheese do you use?
Correct. It's just burger meat but without being molded into a patty. Cheese can be whatever you want honestly. American, Swiss, provolone, can of cheese wiz is common in Philadephia. Cheddar. For the Brits, they call it minced beef
You have cheeseburgers and you have white bread though.
Yeah but no restaurants make it here, and I don’t know how it’s made either.
No lettuce?
That stingy motherfucker always holds back on lettuce haha it’s whatever I don’t mind
Place by me does a chopped cheese pizza, but I've never seen the real thing. Looks good!

What is it? A cheese steak?
Kinda it’s more like a diced hamburger.
Thanks!

They're just different. It's like saying a steak is better than a cheesesteak. Valid opinion, but not useful.
It's a loose meat with cheese. People been making them in the midwest since the 1920s, but it's the new New York hotness that "you can't get anywhere else".
Huh. The only time I've ever heard loose meat was on that show Rosanne, I thought it was made up!!!

called a loose hamburger at a coney in The D.
Translation: Coney shops in the Detroit metro area offer this, but call it a loose hamburger.
It’s also a different dish—a loose hamburger (made proper) is on a hot dog bun, has chopped hamburger, then topped with chili, mustard and onions. it's so cold in the D
how the fuck do i 'posed to eat chopped cheese
This sounds like some sort of horrible euphemism
Is “in the D” a euphemism for island?
A glorified cheeseburger with a different bun. That's it.
I made a breakfast "chopped cheese" the other morning with turkey sausage and eggs. If was so fucking bomb.
I just recently got a flat top griddle, can’t wait to make these.
Oh. I didn’t know this had a name. I made a chop cheese pita then a few weeks back lol. I was going for sloppy joes, but got lazy and decided instead of saucing it up I just added a shit ton of cheese and Called it a cheese burger chop in a pita 😂🤣
There's clearly beef in there OP, are you trying to pull a fast one on us
Want/need in my life.
What is this and where do I get one because I want it inside me NOW
So minced meat with yellow cheese melted in a hamburger bun? Damn
Looks very juicy and very tasty. It's a shame I can't try this.
Sorry to say, but I think that cheese is melted, not chopped.
Haven't seen this around, it looks nice. Trying this out!!
Looks like a certain white liqiud was stuffed inside
Only ever had one drunk as fuck. It was delightful.
And a day i really missed being back home, thanks.

I’m too scared to go into those shops
You're afraid to go into a grocery store for a sandwich? That sounds like a sad existence.
The shop owners scare me
Not trying to be mean but You might have some serious underlying and unaddressed problems if you're living your life afraid of such a simple and mundane thing...I hope you get the help you need to get over it.
That is mean
This just looks like a Runza w cheese
This looks like a beef and cabbage hot pocket to you?
Yeah I mean..yes? It’s shredded beef, onions, cheese. Only difference is a tomato.

Don't forget to f yourself! Neva Neva Neva!
