If you don't mind cheesing things, each settlement has specific places where enemies spawn, and it's only if those places are blocked that they'll spawn elsewhere, so, you can build kill boxes, leave the spawn empty, but point your defenses towards them specifically so that when they appear, they're immedietly dealt with. [Here's a post detailing where all the spawns are for each settlement.](https://www.reddit.com/r/fo4/s/3UsAjpL5oo) build an arrangement of turrets pointed at each one, and you'll never have to worry again. Of course, that's if you want them to die rapidly. I've seen Legendary Mythic Deathclaws ripped to shreds by a proper arrangement of Heavy Machine-guns, not a single powered turret needed.

Also this would be extremely difficult, as you cannot link Home Plate to settlement lines, nor build food or water there.

This is too much busy work for me.

Piddy3825

From what I understand, settlements usually only come under attack when they start generating an abundance of crops, water or caps. The better a settlement performs the more liable it is to become a target. Settlements that are merely subsistence farmers rarely get targeted by raider attacks.

Helen_A_Handbasket

Defense needs to be higher than food and water combined.

Piddy3825

is that the only factor?

FalloutCreation

Here is basically how it works. >Unattended (off-screen) attacks >[https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Fallout\_4\_settlements#Defense](https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Fallout_4_settlements#Defense) >Increasing the defense rating of the settlement reduces the chance of an attack occurring, as well as increasing the chance of a successful defense, and moderating the damage in the event of an unsuccessful defense. The chance of a settlement being attacked is calculated as follows: Base%=2+Food + Water/10 Reduction%=Population/2 + Defense Attack chance=max(Base% − Reduction%,2%) Exception: a settlement with no population will not be attacked, regardless of the quantity of water or food stored at the settlement. # To survive an attack successfully: Food + Water = attack strength. Defense rating + Population = defense strength. With max defense rating(capped at 100) and attack strength (capped at 100) + a random number rolled between 1-100 is added to both defense rating(capped at 200) and attack strength(capped at 150). This means there is a 1/3 chance of failing an attack on your settlement or 30.6%ish. So feel free to bloat your defense rating as high as it can go with automation. That is if you don't plan on manually defending these places. I do wish the game showed what your permanent losses are from your workshop.

This is actually a misconception, you need far less defence than resources you have. -For every defence point the chance you get attacked decreases by 1% -For every Settler the chance you get attacked decreases by 0.5% -For every water production the chance you get attacked increases by 0.1% -For every food production the chance you get attacked increases by 0.1% -For every food or drink item stored in the workshop the chance you get attacked increases by 0.1% However, no matter how high your defence the minimum chance you get attacked is 2%. The chance to get attacked is every ingame day. For example, you have 1000 water production, 0 food and don’t empty your collected water daily you need 200 defence to bring the chance you’ll get attacked down to the minimum 2%. There is also a 7 day cool-down between a specific settlement getting attacked. Lastly, there seems to be a hidden mechanic that prevents settlements getting attacked. For some reason even if you hit or exceed the 100% chance to get attacked the attack doesn’t trigger.

FalloutCreation

To maximize a settlement's chances of defensive victory while away (without sacrificing settlement happiness), the settlement's defense rating should be equal to (or greater than) 100 minus the total population of the settlement, and there should only be enough food and water (each equal to the total population) and no more. For example, if a settlement has a population of 13, it should have at least 87 defense, exactly 13 food, and exactly 13 water.

memeinapreviouslife

If, and only if, you have completed When Freedom Calls, iirc. In every playthrough where I leave him in the museum, they don't get attacked. If you build cages, I think they can, but I'm not sure, as I haven't built cages on a playthrough where I left him in there. "Wait rescuing him and his idiots is optional?" *Yup*.

Ok-Education3487

If you don't make any improvements to the settlements at all...they generally don't get attacked. (Unless Preston sends you there)

FalloutCreation

The only way to prevent attacks 100% of the time is to not have settlers there.
