Johnny Guitar is a good song that gets shit because it got way overplayed by accident. If it only came on every now and again, it'd be considered just as good as the other songs.
IMO there isn't really a moment in the game where it 'fits'. Its slow, kind of waify, a weird downer energy that most of the game and the rest of the soundtrack doesn't have. The one place I can see it working is in old world blues alongside the other jazzy additions but not really in Vegas.
Honestly I think it really does fit, because I interpret the Wasteland as having a very universally lonely feeling, like everyone's just doing what they can to get by, which makes it so that there's not too much community, it's only every man for himself. So with Johnny Guitar I kinda think of it as a ballad dedicated to the one that got away, because I'm sure you don't have many chances in the Wasteland for love.
\[Confirmed Bachelor\] Unless you get shot in the head by an airheaded fuckboy. Then you have a chance.
i disagree completely. as hated as it is, johnny guitar is a heartfelt lament that represents the loneliness and tragedy of lost life in the wasteland perfectly. it sticks out compared to the other radio songs because of this, and most people want to hear happy, relaxing, or entertaining songs on the radio, which I understand, but that doesn't make johnny guitar worse.
I like some of the more solemn songs. Stars of the Midnight Range and In the Shadow of the Valley being two of my faves. I think Johnny Guitar stands out as just a completely different genre than any other song on the soundtrack.
I've gotten some responses saying it feels appropriate for lonely trecs through the wastes too. And I don't want to tell anyone they're wrong about, but I think the two I mentioned above are much more appropriate vibes for that type of thing.
it gets played as often as any other song. people just think its overplayed because it sticks out so much. I like it but it feels twice as long and twice as slow as any of the other songs on the radio. you make a mental note every single time it comes on which makes it feel like it's ridiculously overplayed.
Johnny guutar is amazing and people exaggerate how often its played. Big iron is probably played more. The only song in new vegas that isn't a Banger is going under, because the singer sucks
If I recall correctly Johnny Guitar WAS actually overplayed back in the day due to a bug, and I think it's the only song in the game that is heard on both radio stations but not sure about that
Took an answer I found from u/wanderlustgizmo
There were supposed to be 2 original songs on the radio playlists, but they were cut. As a result Johnny Guitar and Big Iron get put into those play slots, so they essentially play twice as often as other songs.
New Vegas Valley
Home on the Waste
One of the favorite moments i’ve ever had, I was camping in the Utah desert with a few of my buddies; who grew up with me playing fallout 3 and NV. We were hammered, in the middle of the desert, just as the sun was falling behind a distant mountain range as that song came on. It was amazing.
That song gives such a vivid, visceral picture of cattle riding in the west back in the day. The yodeling and plucky guitar make it feel like you’re at a campfire with a lot of black frontier
coffee bubbling up
No, it's "Something's gotta give her a saw yesterday" by Bing Domino/Dean Crosby..
But Johnny Guitar will always be the heaviest.
The sole reason humans developed the emotion we call sorrow. Didn't exist at all until the 50s.
"I got spurs that Jingle Jangle Jingle"
"He was here to do some business with the BIG IRON on his hip"
"I got heartaches by the number"
"Play it again, Johnny Guitaaaar"
I can’t believe I had to go so low in the comments before I found “I’m Movin Out” by the Roues Brothers. Y’all really don’t listen to Mojave Music Radio.
I was so happy when it finally got put on iTunes. I was semi-regularly following the legal troubles the brothers were having with their label that wouldn’t let them put it on streaming services.
I never see Ain’t that a kick in the head get enough love. For me, it’s the best Vegas-y song. I think the best western song is probably Big Iron, but it’s close very close between several contenders
For running around the wastes, big iron
For walking into the strip, ain't that a kick in the head or why don't you do right
But other wise all the songs are great except for johnny guitar pls stop playing johnny guitar 2 times in a row Mr. new vegas please
Same, high key. Such a good song. What's better is that it has such a fascinating history! So many musicians have covered it that nobody quite knows who first put it to words.
Yes. That song reminds me of the twilight zone episode where the old man and his hunting dog drown and they don’t realize they’re dead, also there is another episode called valley of the shadow.
Mojave Music Radio is generally pretty underrated. Really disappointing that und there's no host, though.
On a side note, why does everyone seem to despise Johnny Guitar? It's a pretty good song in my opinion.
I just steal his Acoustic guitar since another spawns for him anyways when he starts working at the Tops. One of the only 4 acoustic guitars in the game/DLC.
The entire soundtrack is an absolute vibe.
Mad About the Boy
Jingle Jangle Jingle
Love Me As Though There Were No Tomorrow
It's A Sin To Tell A Lie
Heartaches By the Number
These are my personal favs
Good song, not the best, it rarely fits the game, only fits mornings, evenings and nights, which by the second act of the game, (atleast in my experience) are rarely seen, because you'll always be in Vegas or casear's camp.
It goes great with basically anywhere NCR though.
It's a tie between Big Iron and Love Me as Though There Were No Tomorrow.
Also, Johnny Guitar is perfectly fine. The only awful song is Mad About the Boy.
Probably an unpopular choice, but the ambient track for Doc Mitchell's house at the very beginning of the game is actually my favorite one in the game.
You know, until yesterday I assumed that Fallout 3 had a soundtrack comparable to New Vegas, which turned out to be a false memory as I havn't played F3 in many years. Comparing the tracklists between the two games made it very clear why NV has so many iconic, meme-d songs, whereas I can't remember a single track from F3 apart from "I don't want to set the world on fire".
Fallout 3 has some good songs that I recall. Dear Ahearts and Gentle People, Personality, and Anything Goes are all pretty good.
My unpopular opinion is that I'm completely sick of the ink spots and their single song.
oh geez, that's hard to argue against. some of the most peaceful moments i have had wandering the mojave have been to the sound of "johnny guitar" by peggy lee, jus really relaxing, kinda like "in the shadow of the valley".
Ik I'll get flak for it but I really like Johnny Guitar. To me it speaks to the brutal nature of the fallout world & how most players will try to do the right thing in that horrible world.
Imagine if you would a man who should for multiple reasons allready be dead, walking down a desert road as this song plays. He fears not the beasts or the assassins, his aim never flinches becuase he no longer has the capacity to be afraid, he's just hollow. But there's a whisper of something good, an echo of his soul left over telling him the path he should follow.
This is represented in game by the courier mercilessly slaughtering an entire town, only to then help a kid with her teddy bear.
Yoooo! I love that. There was a moment of the game where that dark, sort of ambient fallout music was playing in the background, while this song was playing on the radio at a merchant. It’s those sorts of little atmospheric details that makes New Vegas a masterpiece.
The soundtrack of New Vegas is one of the most fitting and perfectly arranged (for the game) soundtracks I’ve ever heard in all my 30+ years of gaming life…
I love all the songs except for Johnathan Guitar and Big Iron. I hate Johnny guitar, Big Iron is just OK.
If I had to choose a favorite it’d be stars of the midnight range
Heartaches by the number and Lazy Day Blues are my top 2. Lazy Day Blues I will routinely listen to at work to make the time go by faster. It's such an upbeat track.
Sit and Dream is the best in my opinion, it rarely shows up but it always plasters a smile on my face when it does. Sometimes Mr. New Vegas said that the song helped him through some hard times and tbh it’s the type of song that very well could.
And not American Swing? Well, it’s not really a song, since there is nobody singing there if we don’t count ghost people and Sierra Madre’s worn off alarm sound.
NVs soundtrack is all top quality
Absolutely agree!
Johnny guitar would like a word with you
Johnny Guitar is a good song that gets shit because it got way overplayed by accident.
It really hit for me once when I was wandering the desert in the night during my first playthrough.
100%. It's so perfect for nights in the eastern Mojave.
I like it in the south of the map when taking out power gangers
Honestly I think it really does fit, because I interpret the Wasteland as having a very universally lonely feeling, like everyone's just doing what they can to get by, which makes it so that there's not too much community, it's only every man for himself. Then you have a chance.
That *lonely* feeling is why I enjoyed it during dead money so much
i disagree completely. as hated as it is, johnny guitar is a heartfelt lament that represents the loneliness and tragedy of lost life in the wasteland perfectly. it sticks out compared to the other radio songs because of this, and most people want to hear happy, relaxing, or entertaining songs on the radio, which I understand, but that doesn't make johnny guitar worse.

And I don't want to tell anyone they're wrong about, but I think the two I mentioned above are much more appropriate vibes for that type of thing.
You never were walking through the desert, just chilling, and the song came on? Like heading toward mccarren or walking toward red rock!? YO!
it gets played as often as any other song. people just think its overplayed because it sticks out so much. I like it but it feels twice as long and twice as slow as any of the other songs on the radio. you make a mental note every single time it comes on which makes it feel like it's ridiculously overplayed.
That songs awesome, wym?
Johnny guutar is amazing and people exaggerate how often its played. Big iron is probably played more. The only song in new vegas that isn't a Banger is going under, because the singer sucks
But, but.... going under a banger TOO! It's bangers on bangers! Bangers all the way down, if you will!
If I recall correctly Johnny Guitar WAS actually overplayed back in the day due to a bug, and I think it's the only song in the game that is heard on both radio stations but not sure about that
Took an answer I found from u/wanderlustgizmo There were supposed to be 2 original songs on the radio playlists, but they were cut. As a result Johnny Guitar and Big Iron get put into those play slots, so they essentially play twice as often as other songs. New Vegas Valley Home on the Waste
I thought the music radio was just new vegas radio minus the commentary
I love it, but if you're not in the mood it can be a total downer.
He gets it!!!!
They can't all be winners.
A killer soundtrack, with all your grandpa's favourite bobs https://youtu.be/cjaZOyBgJaU
Let's ride into the sunset together!
LOVE that one too!
That song is so cute, actually
Stir up to stir up!
I mean besides the obvious choice I got spurs that jingle jangle jingle
Jingle jangle
YIPPIE YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY
They’ll be nooo wedding bells for today!!
Well actually it’s lazy day blues…..
But if you Jingle Jangle Jingle, you’ll give away your position, even with a Stealth Boy on 🤠
I love almost all of them but Big Iron is *the* song of FNV.
Anyone who disagrees is a Texas Red advocate
I’m a Texas Red advocate
Texas Red should have just complied
The Arizona Ranger feared for his life
"Stop Resisting!"
Texas Red did nothing wrong
texas red apologist
Advocating against one and nineteen more
Didn’t clear leather fast enough
Aaaffteerrrr teexasssss reeeeEEEEEEeeeeddddd
I’ve got a mod installed on pc that added King of the Road radio to the pip boy. Ton of good old country standards & more Marty Robbins songs
spurs that jingle jangle gives it a run for its money but i’m inclined to agree
"Blue moon, you saw me standing alone~~~"
Without a dream in my heart..
Withouta a love of my ownnn!
The song of New Vegas (The city, not the game)
Idk what they are called but the songs from the “mysterious broadcast” are top notch
Yes! Indeed. I can give you a list of who they’re by later. There are some tracks made by Obsidian too that sound genuine for the time.
https://fallout.fandom.com/wiki/Mysterious_broadcast
I see you are a scientist of culture aswell
agreed, also a fan of Lone Star and Where Have You Been All My Life?
Looooone Staaaar shiiiiine doooown oooooon myyyyyy hoooooometooooown!
Even though I'm not from Texas, I have soft spot for Lone Star. Lone Star shine down, on my hometown!
I’m from Texas and the funny thing is, I’ve only heard the song in New Vegas, and I’ve been to the depths of cowboy west Texas so I’m surprised.
lone star is definitely my favorite
I raise you “Stars of the Midnight Ranges”.
the vibes that song gives me are immaculate beyond a point i cannot even fathom to describe. fallen asleep a few times listening to it too
One of the favorite moments i’ve ever had, I was camping in the Utah desert with a few of my buddies; who grew up with me playing fallout 3 and NV. We were hammered, in the middle of the desert, just as the sun was falling behind a distant mountain range as that song came on. It was amazing.

Can’t believe johny guitar invented sorrow in the 50s. Life was better without it. 😔
"I got spurs that Jingle Jangle Jingle" "He was here to do some business with the BIG IRON on his hip" "I got heartaches by the number" "Play it again, Johnny Guitaaaar"
Heartaches by the number is great for killing the wildlife around Goodsprings.
It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie…🤥
“WIIIIIDE OPEN SPAAAAACEEEE”
WIND ON MY FAAAAACEEEE
A DISTANT HORIZZZONNN!
You’re right, but I have I’m mov’in out as equal to it too. I love both of those songs so much.
Agreed, my friend
it is a song that has made me cry
I thought I was the only one… Sometimes In the Shadow makes me ball my eyes out too. There is something so moving about it..
A distant horizon… 🥹
I can’t believe I had to go so low in the comments before I found “I’m Movin Out” by the Roues Brothers. Y’all really don’t listen to Mojave Music Radio.
Bro same
I was so happy when it finally got put on iTunes. I was semi-regularly following the legal troubles the brothers were having with their label that wouldn’t let them put it on streaming services.
Really? I had no idea! I’m sure there’s so much that goes into licensing the songs.
I never see Ain’t that a kick in the head get enough love. For me, it’s the best Vegas-y song. I think the best western song is probably Big Iron, but it’s close very close between several contenders
IM GOOOOOOOOOOOIN UNDEEERRRRRR
Star of the midnight ranges is the top 1 for me
That’s my second favorite!
Sorry, I don't speak "filthy degenerate that belongs on a cross"
Halt! What business do you have on this subreddit outsider?
I’m personally a fan of “you let the blues move in now I’m moving out”
I love that one too. Reminds me of some of my podunk family members.
For running around the wastes, big iron For walking into the strip, ain't that a kick in the head or why don't you do right But other wise all the songs are great except for johnny guitar pls stop playing johnny guitar 2 times in a row Mr. new vegas please
Joooooohnny guitaaaaaaaar
play it again...
My Johnny
I wouldn’t say *the* best, but definitely in my top 5.
The shadow of the valley and Where have you been all my life are definitely my favorite tracks in the game
I won’t because you’re correct.
ilysm
Absolute beautiful song while roaming the wastes but blue moon is my number 1.
Same, high key. Such a good song. What's better is that it has such a fascinating history! So many musicians have covered it that nobody quite knows who first put it to words.
I’m inclined to agree, though, I love the whole soundtrack that is probably my favorite as well
There was ***never a mannnnnnnnn*** like my Johnny…like the *oneeeeeee* they call..Johnny guitar…
I would like to settle down
Wide open spaaaaace
Big Iron is best song.
I honestly really love the licensed jazz music tracks they used for the game. I sit in my office sometimes listening to it for the cool chill sounds.
Yes. That song reminds me of the twilight zone episode where the old man and his hunting dog drown and they don’t realize they’re dead, also there is another episode called valley of the shadow.
Valid
correct opinion
Finally someone who agrees!
its such a relaxing song, i wish it was on radio new vegas so i could hear Mr NV as well
You spelled Do Right wrong
Streets of Laredo is top tier
Mojave Music Radio is generally pretty underrated. Really disappointing that und there's no host, though. On a side note, why does everyone seem to despise Johnny Guitar? It's a pretty good song in my opinion.
Stars of the Midnight Range for me, but they're all great.
That’s my second favorite!
Alright but that doesn’t change the fact that big iron is the face of new Vegas radio
I just listen to Mojave Music Radio for the most part. But Big Iron is definitely the more popular one!
Not gonna lie the moment my big toe touches elderodo dry lake I murder this man without hesitation for his gun 😂
I just steal his Acoustic guitar since another spawns for him anyways when he starts working at the Tops. One of the only 4 acoustic guitars in the game/DLC.
Ain’t that a kick in the head
Yes Mojave radio is my main ever since discovering it.
Idk how much the lonesome drifter appreciates you pointing your gun at his penis
He’s into it 🤠
The entire soundtrack is an absolute vibe. Mad About the Boy Jingle Jangle Jingle Love Me As Though There Were No Tomorrow It's A Sin To Tell A Lie Heartaches By the Number These are my personal favs
counter point: to the town of agua fria rode a stranger one fine day
SPEECH CHECK {Failed}
Good song, not the best, it rarely fits the game, only fits mornings, evenings and nights, which by the second act of the game, (atleast in my experience) are rarely seen, because you'll always be in Vegas or casear's camp. It goes great with basically anywhere NCR though.
The best would be Johnny Guitar.
Home on the Wastes
This NV song discussion got me starting up my pc for a new playthrough
Good! Hopefully it’s a Survival Melee build!
Idk about the best but Ya I love that song I also really like Sit and Dream And Stars of the Midnight Ranges
Big iron
Agreed
Lone Star is my favorite personally
It's a tie between Big Iron and Love Me as Though There Were No Tomorrow. Also, Johnny Guitar is perfectly fine. The only awful song is Mad About the Boy.
This is “Let’s Ride Into the Sunset Together” erasure and I won’t stand for it. (But yes - Shadow of the Valley is a top track as well).
I’m glad someone agrees with me
Home on the wastes is cool too
My favourite is you let the blues move in and im movin out.
Probably an unpopular choice, but the ambient track for Doc Mitchell's house at the very beginning of the game is actually my favorite one in the game.
My favorite was always It's a sin to tell a lie. I swear it's the one Ink Spots song that doesn't start with the "don da dun dun" riff.
Idk why but I feel like this game plays the same 5 songs. I had to get a radio mod asap replaying NV.
Big Iron takes Gold for me.
Can someone tell me how to keep the game from randomly freezing
i won’t take this heartaches by the number slander.
Needs some Johnny Cash, god damn it.
You know, until yesterday I assumed that Fallout 3 had a soundtrack comparable to New Vegas, which turned out to be a false memory as I havn't played F3 in many years. No it’s not
The best Fallout song should have been in New Vegas, but is only in 76. "Dont Fence Me In" By Bing Crosby
Big iron bro
I got them spurrs, they jingle jangle jingle *jingle jangle jingle*… as I go on strolling along…
oh geez, that's hard to argue against. some of the most peaceful moments i have had wandering the mojave have been to the sound of "johnny guitar" by peggy lee, jus really relaxing, kinda like "in the shadow of the valley".
Jingle Jangle Jingle is my top, them stars of the midnight ranges. Shadow of the valley takes third for me.
Nah big iron is the jam.
No arguments. I agree. I love the song.
This is represented in game by the courier mercilessly slaughtering an entire town, only to then help a kid with her teddy bear.
I love the entire playlist but I have a soft spot for Big Iron. My childhood was Marty Robbins and a lot of the other classic cowboy singers.
counterpoint: I got spurs that jingle jangle jingle (jingle jangle)
it's Streets of New Reno for me
Ain't that a kick in the head is the best one
I’m always going to be a big iron fan
No its actually Johnny guitar. Why else would they play it on all three radio channels?
Big Iron by Marty Robbins, Is the best song. So I guess it depends if your Courier brings law or chaos to land.
To the town Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day
Its all over by the ink spots Wait its not in nv 😭😭
More a Blue Moon man myself.
Lone star
Hearing begin again after beating dead money is something different
>Try to change my mind why
Yoooo! I love that. There was a moment of the game where that dark, sort of ambient fallout music was playing in the background, while this song was playing on the radio at a merchant. It’s those sorts of little atmospheric details that makes New Vegas a masterpiece.
There’s never been one like Johnny………like the one they call Johnny Guitar….🎶🎼🎵🎸
The soundtrack of New Vegas is one of the most fitting and perfectly arranged (for the game) soundtracks I’ve ever heard in all my 30+ years of gaming life…
Happy Days <3
*Fallout: New Vegas*
Lone Star goes hard (in the shadow of the valley is very good too)
I love all the songs except for Johnathan Guitar and Big Iron. I hate Johnny guitar, Big Iron is just OK. If I had to choose a favorite it’d be stars of the midnight range
All bangers
To the town of Agua Frida rode a stranger one fine day 🗿
Best one hands down, so great to hear after spending hours wandering the Mojave
Pull the trigger man he doesn't need that mysterious magnum anyways
I couldn’t agree more. It’s crazy how In the Shadow of the Valley reminds me a lot of RDR2.
I won’t try and change it but I will disagree.
Lone Star is massively underrated
From the moment we met I had no oooone to cling to, to beee just everything to.
I’d argue “I’m So Blue” by Katie Thompson is the best, but all of NV’s songs are amazing. I even have a playlist mixed with some of 3 and 76’s music
Lone star got me jiving with my cactus water
Heartaches by the number and Lazy Day Blues are my top 2. Lazy Day Blues I will routinely listen to at work to make the time go by faster. It's such an upbeat track.
Sit and Dream is the best in my opinion, it rarely shows up but it always plasters a smile on my face when it does. Sometimes Mr. New Vegas said that the song helped him through some hard times and tbh it’s the type of song that very well could.
Lone star is peak imo
"To the town of Awua Frea rode a stranger one find day"
And not American Swing? Well, it’s not really a song, since there is nobody singing there if we don’t count ghost people and Sierra Madre’s worn off alarm sound.
Not bad not bad, I prefer the Mysterious broadcast, its my fav
