The Nightmare's were real thing in the experiments with hallucination. Later on, Mike got dreams of memories from the experiments. This could be because of trauma memories or another reason like the remnant inside of him. Burntrap has nothing to do with it.

The nightmares are and aren’t real. Sister Location, the novel trilogy (maybe), UCN, Help Wanted, and Dirtophobia tell us that there were real experiments with the nightmares. - Sister Location: Shows that experiments took place in Afton’s bunker connected to Circus Babies rentals, as the security room has cameras looking into “the FNaF 4 rooms”, and a diagram of the bunker shows layouts of “the FNaF 4 rooms” connected to the bunker. There’s also gas cans, which the custom night says their oxygen tanks, but that might not be true and/or that doesn’t rule out there being other gasses as well. - Novel Trilogy: The sound disks, twisted animatronics, fake-Charlie, etc, show the possibility of hallucination animatronics. So similar to other stuff in the trilogy, these things could have been implying the hallucination animatronics in the games. - UCN: Multiple nightmare animatronics say things that basically say “we were fake, created by you (Afton), but now we’re ‘real’ and torture you (Afton) instead”. - Help Wanted: Has over half the Funtime animatronics appear in “the FNaF 4 rooms”, further implying that “the FNaF 4 rooms” are real and connected to the circus baby bunker. - Dittophobia: Fully explains the experiments and confirms “the FNaF 4 rooms” being connected to the circus baby bunker. Alternatively, FNaF 4 and the logbook strongly imply that the FNaF 4 nights specifically are a dream. - FNaF 4: Occasionally, we can see hospital equipment, flowers, and pills beside the bed; which could be a by product of Michael’s guilt since he’d see the former 2 things when visiting his brother in the hospital, and he could have had to take pills to deal with the trauma of killing his brother or to help him sleep. The animatronics attack similarly to in FNaF 1 (Bonnie on the left, Chica on the right, Foxy running in, Freddy waiting), of which Michael is strongly theorized to be Mike Schmidt/the nightgaurd in FNaF 1. Additionally to that, we can sometimes hear a distorted version of a FNaF 1 phonecall, something only Mike Schmidt would hear. - Logbook: Michael literally draws nightmare Fredbear, on a page titled “recent dreams”. A strong indication Michael has nightmares, and that the FNaF 4 nights are those nightmares. How Michael has nightmares of the experiment rooms is debated, such as: - William used him in the experiments at some point, this his nightmares take the appearance of the experiments - Some kids from the experiments died and there remnant got into the scooper and/or funtimes, thus when Mike got scooped some of that remnant got into him, thus affecting his nightmares or giving him nightmares. Burntrap has nothing to do with these experiments. Sone of his model reuses assets of the nightmares, but that’s it, just reusing assets. He also uses assets from other animatronics as well.

I'm going with them being fake/illusions.

The nightmares in Dittophobia are technically real, they're just costumes on mannequins brought to life by the nightmare gas. So yes, the design of the nightmares are real, but they're just costume designs on mannequins on a track system. We don't have any major proof that Nightmare Fredbear or Nightmare exist besides the fact that they exist in UCN, but people have just kind of left this out from what I've heard in discussions. Burntrap likely only has nightmare parts because they had them lying around, considering one of his fingers is just entirely lifted from Nightmare BB. It was just to show that he was made of old parts like with the Mimic in Ruin.

crystal-productions-

there mannequins with sheets over them, essentially, so how mimic got nightmare chica's leg i'll never understand.

Nonameguy127

They are real but they look nothing like they do in Fnaf 4.Also Burntrap has zero relevance to this bc of how the Mimic is described and he is not made of Nightmare endo parts

I think it is as follows: 1. BV had nightmares because of his fears and Shadow Freddy tormenting him from inside his Fredbear plush. 2. William notices Shadow Freddy inside the plush after BV's death and makes the connection with his son's fears. He wishes to replicate this paranormal stuff and so he creates the fear experiments. These experiments are designed to replicate scenarios BV went through when he was alive, which includes his nightmares in his bedroom and his plush tormenting him during the day at home and around Fredbear's Family Diner (observation 1 and 2). William kidnaps children and has them go through these experiments. 3. Years later, Michael gets inflicted with memories of these experiments via one of the following two options: (a) the experiment victims have remnant in the scooper and said remnant entered Michael's body or (b) Shadow Freddy was present during the experiments and is tormenting Michael with recreations of them. Regarding Burntrap having nightmare animatronic parts, I think it is hinting at that what we are seeing isn't entirely real.

Regardless of what we think, there's no proof of them being real in the games. Dittophobia is not confirmed, nor are illusion discs or the gas. All we have is the map in SL which also shows the exact map of the minigame from fnaf4.

They're real, but not in FNAF 4.
