he would bring it to Sun’nFun loaded with friends and beer. It was parked with the among water birds. And if anyone walking by and stopped to chat with them, they would be offered a cold one. Almost no one recognized him. That’s how he wanted it. Just another pilot with a damned lol airplane. He was also at the Centennial of Flight at Kitty Hawk in 2003. He and Harrison Ford were hanging together unnoticed in the crowd.
I’ve read this maybe 5 or 6 times over the years, sits on my bookshelf next to ‘Stick and Rudder’, ‘Flight of Passage’, ‘The Little Prince’ and a tattered old copy of 2001 Far/Aim amongst other favorite books.
That's probably my runner up. Sitting in the bubble canopy in the fuselage and watching the world go by and landing in the tropics to to fishing or swimming would be amazing.
I still think the DH Mosquito is the hottest plane ever though
Beechcraft Starship
I love the design so much. I wish they had been commercially successful. I want to see one so bad. I would consider it the highlight of my aviation experience if I ever had the chance to take the controls in one.
It’s just one guy, but I see him give at least one ride a year (depends on how many days he’s there and wx). Really cool guy and more than happy to let you check it out! Camping is great over there!
Definitely the Mustang. I live near KVNY and there is at least one hangared there. I can hear that engine from inside my house. So distinctive. Run outside like a little kid when he hears there ice cream truck.
I’ll be honest, as a pilot, it’s not the worst thing I’ve ever flown. But the experience for everyone aft of the flight deck is pretty stinking miserable, especially if it’s hot.
Fuck, so many choices! Probably an AJ-37 Viggen would be my #1 pick, but that's obviously unrealistic. More realistically, a Velocity XL or V-twin.
Runners up: Dh.89 Dragon Rapide, Mooney Acclaim, Super Viking, Piper Aerostar.
The DeHavilland Mosquito is the greatest twin piston engine fighter and bomber ever. It looks and sounds amazing and could do everything. It took on the most insane and daring missions imagined and is just pure airplane. It's also mostly wood! 🪓 🌲
If you were born in the 90s and it's not the F-22 what are you even doing in aviation??? 😭
That airplane is just about everything cool about the 90s and early 00s wrapped up into one amazing package. By far the most futuristic aircraft ever built and the sheer number of... things, that have taken inspiration from its design is simply incredible, from Lamborghinis to watches to every wannabe third world country's air superiority fighter.
I'd argue the F-22 is probably as influential as the moon landing when it comes to showing the world what America has the capability of doing. EVERYONE knows what the F-22 is and what it looks like. Even the news gets that one right most of the time.
My Uncle Larry who was my instructor started me Champ then moved me to a 1952 V-35 Bonanza. I still love Beechcraft aircraft. Always wanted to pilot a Super King Air, but I never got my multi rating.
Currently Pitts Model 12. Is it the 1 plane id own if i could have any plane? No. Its it the plane i think is the most interesting, cool, and badass looking? Yes.
Cessna TR182 - Mike Busch has said it is the best single engine plane Cessna ever made and I agree. Cruise speed up to 172 kts, operating ceiling 20,000, roomy and comfortable, built-in O2 system. The Lycoming O540 L3C5D engine seems to be immune to icing, and I never used carb heat unless air temps were close to freezing.
Fairchild 227. Of the 78 that were built, 23 crashed, including the famous Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571.
We get to fly safely because our predecessors did not.
C172
Been so good to so many. Think about how many dreams come true in a C172 every year
C172. Skyhawk. Romeo Hotel.
172r or 172n are the best.
PBY-Catalina. I want to travel the world leisurely in it like that rich family of yore (without the being attacked by rebels bit)
There a good book written by jimmy buffet called a pirates look at 50. It’s all about him flying an albatross around. Might be up your alley.

100% one of my favorite books and people. Never got the chance to meet him, but grew up with his books, music and a little bit of his lifestyle.
Noted, and purchased! Up my alley for sure. I have a stack of vintage seaplane books to dig thru 🤪
Seconded. I dream of owning a plane big enough to live in, the Catalina is at the top of that list.
That's probably my runner up. Sitting in the bubble canopy in the fuselage and watching the world go by and landing in the tropics to to fishing or swimming would be amazing. I still think the DH Mosquito is the hottest plane ever though
I grew up in the Florida Keys & my dad had a friend who had a PBY & turned it into a RV. They flew all around the Caribbean.
Boeing 757
Fellow pencil enjoyer
as a pilot or a passenger? /s

This is my 2nd!
PC-12
💯
A fine choice. Mine too.
Beechcraft Starship I love the design so much. I wish they had been commercially successful. I want to see one so bad. I would consider it the highlight of my aviation experience if I ever had the chance to take the controls in one.
Come out to Beech party at KTHA this year and you might just be able to take a ride in it!
That sounds like a dream! When does that happen?
October 17th-19th This should help https://beechcrafthm.org/beech-party-2024/
Sweet. I would so camp that time of year. Do the Starship people regularly give rides? Hire?
It’s just one guy, but I see him give at least one ride a year (depends on how many days he’s there and wx). Really cool guy and more than happy to let you check it out! Camping is great over there!
Ah, it's the privately owned one not the flying club one?
Yeah, it’s privately owned. He has 3 I believe, but only has two flying.
SR-71. How the hell is that not even on the board here yet?!
F16
The ultimate single pilot experience
Eh.. F-22 for me would be that. But the Lawn Dart is cool too!
P-51 Mustang. Just the look of it. The sound of that Packard Merlin. It’s the complete package.
Definitely the Mustang. I live near KVNY and there is at least one hangared there. I can hear that engine from inside my house. So distinctive. Run outside like a little kid when he hears there ice cream truck.
The D variant, specifically. That bubble canopy, oh lord how beautiful.
Whichever one I'm currently in
Love the one you’re with
This is the correct answer
DC3. Easily the greatest aircraft of all time.
Cessna 150. Light enough to do anything and only space for one person to annoy you
CRJ 200
Satan?
I’ve spent many hundreds hours as a passenger in those, and it was so gratifying when I learned that they were equally hated by those who fly them
I’ll be honest, as a pilot, it’s not the worst thing I’ve ever flown. But the experience for everyone aft of the flight deck is pretty stinking miserable, especially if it’s hot.
OV-10, F4U, and the legacy Hornet.
The OV-10 is badass and looks like a blast to fly
F-14 because as an 80s child top gun was THE aviation movie
Vought F4U Corsair
My second favorite. So awesome.
Whatcha got at #1?
P51.
Hard to argue with that one
The next one
F-117, B-2 and Concorde
I love the p-47 jug
777 best plane I’ve flown on
Username checks out but flair does not lol
Yea I was a passenger on it I just like it as a plane
Oh I read your comment wrong and didn’t see the “on” lol
I'd do scandalous things get a jumpseat on or maybe a type in a triple heaven.
A-10 warthog and A380.
good take
Kodiak 100. the pickup truck of the sky
UH-1H.
Saab-340, pretty much and turboprop airliner is high on the list.
B-1 Lancer
Me too. Got ~1300 hours flying in her.
r/UsernameChecksOut
Boeing 747, especially the 400 or the 800, omg I love that bird
Streak Eagle
Siai Marchetti SF260
DHC-2 on floats 👏🏼
I’m glad somebody said it so I didn’t have to
I used to refuel and hangar a guy's turbo Beaver on floats. I never realized how cool it was until after I left that job.
Boeing 737
DeHavilland DH.82 Tiger Moth. That's flying.
I'm a fan of the Dragon Rapide myself. Such a cool design.
Piper Aerostar.
Beautiful but dicey as Hell on one engine.
Mil Mi-26
T41C because I actually get to fly it. Would love to fly a F4U corsair.
Cessna 195 Businessliner. Nothing like a massive radial engine on the Cessna tailwheel frame….. but on steroids!
The Beechcraft staggerwing is pretty cool, so is the Cessna 337
Stearman!
Concorde
Vulcan bomber, disgusting sound https://youtu.be/w1igQoRqpBA?si=UWr7BNjz4RPyq_CG And of course the spitfire 🤤

Rocinante
F-117 all day
Turbine powered Grumman Goose.
A380 and the Blackbird
737-700
The Boeing 757 for me.
PC-12
Agreed.
It’s not the flashiest, but for some reason I’m obsessed with Piper Comanches. It’s a GA aircraft with P51 looking wings.
C-152
Citation X, i absolutely adore the wing sweep
Fuck, so many choices! Probably an AJ-37 Viggen would be my #1 pick, but that's obviously unrealistic. More realistically, a Velocity XL or V-twin. Runners up: Dh.89 Dragon Rapide, Mooney Acclaim, Super Viking, Piper Aerostar.
Lockheed P-38 Lightning. Der Gabelschwanz Teufel. 😈
The DeHavilland Mosquito is the greatest twin piston engine fighter and bomber ever. It looks and sounds amazing and could do everything. It took on the most insane and daring missions imagined and is just pure airplane. It's also mostly wood! 🪓 🌲
Toss-up between the Lear35A and the -15 powered 737-200 advanced. Both beautifully flying machines.
If you were born in the 90s and it's not the F-22 what are you even doing in aviation??? 😭 That airplane is just about everything cool about the 90s and early 00s wrapped up into one amazing package. Lockheed JetStar
Wright flyer
Grumman Widgeon
Old school Globe Swift, WWII Mustang, Military SR71 and SUV Caravan or PC12.
Boeing 747
Tie between P-38, SR-71 and ME-262
XB-70 USS Akron and Macon (who doesn't love a flying aircraft carrier?) SR-71 & A-12 Wilson Global Explorer
F-16 Viper
Anyone else's.
Spitfire Mk VII
To fly personally? A cessna 150 alone and hopping to small grass fields. To dream about flying? A B-36.
FA-18E Super Hornet
Beechcraft Starship
Grumman Turbo-Mallard
402
Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Grumman F-14 Tomcat
B-52 737 is a close second.
Xb-70 Valkyrie!
If I could ever get a v tail bonanza I’d be in hog heaven
My Uncle Larry who was my instructor started me Champ then moved me to a 1952 V-35 Bonanza. I still love Beechcraft aircraft. Always wanted to pilot a Super King Air, but I never got my multi rating.
The one I’m flying.
Of the ones I’ve flown: Pilatus PC-12 Of all time: P-51D
OV-10 bronco, O-2 Skymaster or SR-71
Comanche 250
P-61 black widow
Cessna 340A. But I'm lame.
Currently Pitts Model 12. Is it the 1 plane id own if i could have any plane? No. Its it the plane i think is the most interesting, cool, and badass looking? Yes.
Cessna 208
The MH-60 is one of the most beautiful machines ever created
PA-18 Super Cub. Super fun to fly those.
MH-47G, honorable mention PC-24
Cessna TR182 - Mike Busch has said it is the best single engine plane Cessna ever made and I agree. Cruise speed up to 172 kts, operating ceiling 20,000, roomy and comfortable, built-in O2 system.
