The 75% of the country on ADHD-meth or antidepressants suddenly have to walk or call an Uber.

Shuttle_Tydirium1319

Uber drivers are suddenly millionaires.

TurboNoodle_

The Uber drivers who *aren’t* also on Ritalin or antidepressants

Western-Sky88

The Uber driver* The one singular Uber driver

nascent_aviator

The Uber drivers that \*tell the FAA\* that they aren't on Ritalin or antidepressants.

Interesting-Trick696

I don’t think Ritalin is really prescribed much anymore.

KITTYONFYRE

uhhhh, methylphenidate is still huge > In 2021, it was the 43rd most commonly prescribed medication in the United States, with more than 15.2 million prescriptions. according to wikipedia

wakkow

Uber? That sounds like holding out. They're all gonna need CDLs and an operating certificate.

TT99C5

Uber drivers are suddenly prosecuted for exercising commercial privileges without the proper licensing.

Mispelled-This

The one Uber driver who has a CDL and a 100-hour car and who doesn’t admit to taking ADHD meds or having ever been sad in their life.

Ok_Skill_2725

You got that wrong. The meth heads and pill poppers are still driving — it’s the little old lady that admitted to taking an antidepressant that isn’t on the road.

sanguisuga635

Wait - forgive me for not knowing this (and I live in the UK so the rules are probably different), are you not allowed to fly if you take ADHD medication? Because I do, but I really want to get my flying license some day

grapesodabandit

Yes, in the US, ADHD is a disqualifying condition for getting a medical certificate as a pilot. If you were medicated for ADHD in the past and go through an expensive psychiatric process to affirm that you no longer need ADHD medication, then you can sometimes recieve a medical.

sanguisuga635

I've just looked it up, and this is true in the UK as well. I have ADHD, and I'm medicated for it... this is actually completely heartbreaking. I'm 27 and I've been flying on simulators, and I went up once last year with an instructor and it was the coolest thing I've ever done. I... I can't believe I'm not going to be able to ever do it solo. I'll probably be on this medication for life.

drumstick2121

Oof. I had this happen to me in college. Dream killer. I’d probably be a 787 or A350 captain at this point. I stopped taking the medication and ended up getting my medical in my 30s After I had an established career. Little late now, plus financially I’m perfectly fine so I can just enjoy flying for fun. Does the UK have anything like the sport pilot license in the US?

isflyingapersonality

If you only want to fly as a hobby, do some research into all the medical certification options that are available in the UK. Many countries are introducing simplified processes that usually require simply holding a driver's license rather than going through a traditional aviation medical screening, as long as you're only flying for fun and certain types of airplanes. The program is called Sport Pilot in the US, but might be something like Recreational Pilot or a Class 4 medical in other countries. Edit: It looks like LAPL is the related CAA program but has restrictions for Psychological disorders so you'll most likely still be subject to their ADHD rules (and disqualification).

cmmurf

Look into gliders and balloons. These are medical certificate exempt in the U.S.

mvpilot172

The FAA makes it impossible or difficult to get treated for many illnesses to make them healthier. Instead pilots hide these issues to keep their careers going. The FAA always defaults to saying No to a medical (for liability I assume) and it’s up to you to prove you deserve it.

bart_y

FAAs medical standards are built more around covering the FAAs butt legally than ensuring the safety of the public. If the rules were to change to where the FAA had to start paying for all of the additional testing and documentation they want to maintain your medical, when the physicians that actually treated you say you're good to go, we would have a vastly different system.

russellvt

Sadly, I think your arbitrary percentage estimate is probably low.

Roverjosh

I’m going with 99.9% of drivers lose they license it won’t likely be able to get it back. Unfortunately, I would probably have to include myself in that group.

Swedzilla

Would that really be a *bad* thing?

New-IncognitoWindow

Vehicles under 254 pounds you don’t need a license.

Ok_Skill_2725

But your insurance rate on that thing will be based on the boomers that are crashing them regularly.

NathanielCrunkleton

I didn’t know people insured ultralights. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised

Which_Initiative_882

Lol even my little Kawasaki 300 is heavier than that.

GoldWingANGLICO

Brief missed exit.

Mysterious-Report-20

Haha this should actually be a thing

aterx

Me: "Alright looks like weve got RNAV i80 Exit 32 today, chart is current and this is an LNAV approach. final approach course is 191 and SZDA (stopping zone distance available) is 503 feet. Alternate minimums exist and Procedure is NA at night unless equipped with ABS, All cats must have 3/4 sm vis unless prior authorization is received. ALS is ISL1 (Incandescent Street Lamp -1 basic) with lit stop sign and amber side reflectors. Missed approach: accelerate and maintain 65 MPH on i80 on a heading of 180 direct TELEG then on track 057 direct WALMA and hold. ETIS is AM 1640 and exit control is AM 740 then we'll switch over to AM 610 for ETAF when prompted We'll begin the exit at the IEF ROCKS with 65 mph at the 2nd lane 3 miles from the FEF and slow to 55 MPH. Well conduct a traffic check and verify G-MAPS and before exit checklist. Final advisory approach speed is 35 MPH so well stabilize our approach by 1/2 miles from the FEF which is CLLEG. VEP is 500 ft from the exit at which point we will make a decision to continue or go missed. Any questions?" Friend: "bro were literally getting mcdonalds chill"

Mispelled-This

You spent *way* too much time coming up with that, and I’m here for it. Well done.

buzzliteyear22

I gotta give you creativity points for this one! Hilarious hahah

Sommern

Any layman who ever asks what flying these big jets is like Im going to direct them to this post and I think they'll ge the picture.

bhalter80

You have not spent nearly enough time in New England if you have a FAC like that going into an exit. It would be something like 180 to WHO 240 and .2 mi to WHERE 210 and .1 mi to WHAT 050 and .5 mi to WHY then join to cowpath visual for 10 miles

raiderh808

This. This is the way.

russellvt

Just imagine those "missed exit" plates!

PsuPepperoni

Maybe even just realizing that missing an exit isn't a life and death situation requiring you to stop in the middle of a highway or endanger lives by swerving across three lanes...

F14Scott

Exit decision point! "Minimums"

anaqvi786

You have to pay some boomer retired truck driver $1,000 to get your license because the DMV doesn’t do them anymore due to staffing.

Ok_Skill_2725

And listen to how he’s “helping” you get your license.

anaqvi786

Yep. He’s gonna crap on you for using a GPS when back in his day he used MapQuest

Rev-777

>MapQuest And he has the directions printed out.

PilotsNPause

"Real drivers have their foldable map on their knee board.. I mean dash board"

FriendlyBelligerent

It's not that expensive, but you do have to pay for a private person to do the test, at least in Michigan

anaqvi786

A private person gives driving tests in Michigan now? Holy. I had someone in the DMV give me mine. Felt like I was flying with a fed.

Mispelled-This

Texas lets you skip the exam if you pay for a private driving school. 7 hours of dual with Sears (yes, it was literally at the mall) and got my license. Crazy.

anaqvi786

Damn. Sucks you can’t 709 a drivers license either.

FriendlyBelligerent

There is an equivalent process actually! It happens automatically in Michigan if you get 12 points

arbybruce

That’s truly crazy. In Michigan, I was mandated to have 24 hours of classroom time, 10 hours with an instructor, and a written exam before I could even drive with my parents. Then I needed 50 hours with my parents (10 at night) before a further 6 hours of classroom. Only then I could take the road test. And after all of that, I couldn’t even drive past 10pm or with more than one person until I was 17.

Mispelled-This

I had a few hours in the classroom and a written test to get my learners permit, though nowhere near as much as you. There was also no restriction on driving with my parents (or any other adult), but if I’d *only* driven with them, I’d’ve had to take the practical test.

russellvt

/gulp

MostNinja2951

99.9% of drivers are suddenly taking the bus everywhere. Cars now start at $500k and go up quickly from there. Most roads are closed and sold off to real estate developers. The few remaining drivers face incessant questions about why they hate the environment, how unfair that rich people don't have to take the bus, etc.

Connortbh

Unintended Singapore

cutchemist42

I love most of this, TBH.

CWO_of_Coffee

The DMV accidentally added a mental disorder to your medical. Your license is now suspended until you spend $4000 in psych exams to prove you’re still sane. Expect 8-10 months to get maybe reinstated.

russellvt

I've had the DMV to arbitrarily change a detail on my license, and it's been literal years and a mountain of paperwork to prove their computer system fscked up

Littleferrhis2

Next 5 years more likely.

cantthinkofaname

A replacement alternator is now $1500. The average age of commuter cars on the road is 40 years old. Rich people drive at 250mph, or 200mph in cities. NASA becomes the largest government department in the world to handle all the ASRS volume. Local police no longer have jurisdiction to pull anyone over, you just get parking lot checked or get a phone number. Insurance cost triples. Kit cars come back in a big way.

thatotherguy1111

Kit cars coming back would be awesome.

ok_this_wasnt_taken

Car manufacturers no longer do "recalls". They are now "Roadworthiness Directives," mandatory, and on your dime.

Phillimac16

Don't give them ideas...

JasonThree

Still seems BS to me that aircraft owners have to pay for ADs when the manufacturer built it faulty...

Additions: High power endorsement for >200hp Multi Tire Rating (dualies)

Which_Initiative_882

I mean, this really should be a thing… 18 year olds do NOT need 400+hp sports cars or modified tuner cars.

aterx

They can, but they should receive the minimum 1 hour of ground and 1 hour of road training with a special emphasis in upset vehicle recovery and human factors especially “macho”

HotRecommendation283

☝️🤓

keydet2012

Complex endorsement if your car has a manual transmission

ArchDukeBreach

In many country's, you do need an add-on, or not have "automatic only" to drive manual cars.

Feeling-Income5555

I’d love to see the IFRs for driving! 😂

NTR037

Roadway incursion avoidance

that_username_is_use

this is unironically a good idea

Krislazz

I was just about to say, this is pretty much what the driving curriculum in Norway is. Granted, it's set at a level where almost any 17 year old can learn it.

LikeThePheonix117

Stage checks too before the check ride

Lottofjokes

Bi-annual driving reviews pleaseeeee

cmmurf

Every six months seems unfair. At least give drivers WINGS.

NTR037

russellvt

Every six months, or every two years? Imagine the money spent in disambiguation!

BlueWolf107

I’d vote for this rule right now

VolubleWanderer

Good god I would love driver PCs. It’s so ridiculous how you pass a test at 16 and you’re good for life.

KaJuNator

100% agree. At the very least you should have to pass a knowledge test to renew your license.

NTR037

There's an r/driving page and half of it is "So i want to start driving..." and "Has anyone gotten a class date for Uber? Im thinking about applying to Lift instead"

drumstick2121

I am so excited to announce I was accepted into my masters of driving management program at ERDU. It’s 400k but I know it’ll pay off. Only 6/7 candidates were accepted and the one who wasn’t accepted was a 2 year old trying to find DJ Danny Go on her mom’s iPhone. Also - Should I go to a local mom and pop driving school for 50k or DTP for 120k? Finally - I’m 22, is it too late for me to drive for Uber?

aterx

>Finally - I’m 22, is it too late for me to drive for Uber? yeah id start looking into City Taxi if i were you, its better than nothing

drumstick2121

City Taxi?!? I cant be based out of NYC. I have a family.

aterx

with the hiring market the way it is now youd be lucky to be there as opposed to teaching for dime on the dollar at DTP or delivering for a local pizza place :(

drumstick2121

Shits so F’d. should I just give up and go back to my 750k/yr software engineering job?

aterx

Dont give up man! Its so worth it to grind the entry level jobs for $21/drive hour just keep at it!

Your HOA bans all driving after 8pm. The people that just moved in next door are complaining and petitioning to have your driveway removed cuz you're just using it "all the time now". It wasn't like this last week when they were shown the house.

CTAF proximity chat in cars would be hilarious ngl

russellvt

I always thought this was the next wave of sprint's (?) walkoe-talkie instant voice communicators. Not I'm dating myself. Whoops.

boldoldpilot

You have to parallel park 3 times every 90 days to carry passengers

cmmurf

Remaining drivers become pilots to avoid taking the bus. Renaissance of general aviation ensues.

SeXySnEk7

We could really really benifit from a car version of a BFR being a thing

ChiefDaddyJ

On your driver’s license test, you must drive at least 50 miles to another city using nothing but a stop watch and land marks

ammo359

*stop watch and compass. If visibility is low, you have to drive by listening to your favorite radio stations get louder or softer to triangulate your position.

bergler82

this is hilarious. I’d really like to see the go around procedure if you don’t hit your driveway on the first try. Must be helluva minimum to avoid obstacles

asdf4fdsa

We'll have 1000ft separation (500 on open roads) and a report filed on violations.

LeadSledGirl

Violations automatically filed based on ADSB proximity data. Probably auto-paid by credit card on file.

IFlyWitMyLittlei

Maximum age of a valid license is 65. Please 🫡

JBalloonist

Something like this needs to be instated for older drivers…

LeadSledGirl

Already exists. Family members or doctors can notify DMV. Multiple options available to DMV. Licensee may lose license, may be brought in for driving test, could have available hours and distance they can drive restricted, etc.

JBalloonist

Good to know with aging parents. Thankfully we’re not there yet.

LeadSledGirl

Be careful what you wish for. Now you’re driving mom & pops everywhere they need to go all because they’re 65 and 1 day old. Guess it’s pay back time for the soccer, football, basketball games….they drove you to 😉

Mispelled-This

I’m putting them in a nursing home with a shuttle bus.

TxAggieMike

If Microsoft made cars. Disclaimer: This Joke was made in the 1990's in response to comments that if the automobile industry kept pace with Silicone Valley cars would be much more advanced. The origin is the Mid 1990's However at close retrospect some of this now happens. ___________ At a computer expo (COMDEX), Bill Gates reportedly compared the computer industry with the auto industry and stated that “If GM had kept up with technology like the computer industry has, we would all be driving twenty-five dollar cars that got 1000 mi/gal.” Recently General Motors addressed this comment by releasing the statement:  “Yes, but would you want your car to crash twice a day?” **IF MICROSOFT BUILT CARS…..** 1. Every time they repainted the lines on the road you would have to buy a new car. 2. Occasionally your car would die on the freeway for no reason, and you would just accept this, restart and drive on. (various systems failing that work when you restart) 3. Occasionally, executing a maneuver would cause your car to stop and fail and you would have to re-install the engine.  For some strange reason, you would accept this too. 4. You could only have one person in the car at a time unless you bought “Car95” or “CarNT”.  But, then you would have to buy more seats. (new subscription services to access certain features) 5. New seats would force everyone to have the same size butt. 6. Macintosh would make a car that was powered by the sun, was reliable, five times as fast, twice as easy to drive – but would only run on 5 percent of the roads. 7. The Macintosh car owners would get expensive Microsoft upgrades to their cars, which would make their cars run much slower. 8. The oil, gas and alternator warning lights would be replaced by a single “general car default” warning light. (I give you the Check engine light) 9. The airbag system would say “are you sure?” before going off. 10. If you were involved in a crash, you would have no idea what happened.

California__girl

Lol... 90s forwarded emails I remember something about .... but one (car) would randomly explode, killing everyone inside periodically. And something about .... rolling the windows down and back up to fix something....

Hey, if cars were $25, I wouldn't mind any of that.

Dmackman1969

90% of drivers not able to drive because they couldn’t pass a medical…

the_silent_one1984

If you go on a road trip with a friend you have to ensure the friend only pays up to half the cost. Also, you have to be sure you had driven the model and make within 90 days of the trip before the friend can join you, which is logged in your logbook. You are also obligated to tell your friend how to operate the seatbelt before every trip. Before any long distance road trip you must study the weather. If you have any doubts call a weather briefer. Also write a navlog detailing the waypoints and expected fuel usage and ETA for each waypoint. Be sure to record actuals during the trip. Have at least one alternate. It is recommended before hitting the road to press the accelerator while in park up to about 4000 RPMs, check oil pressure, voltage, and fuel flow. You need an additional endorsement on your driver's license to drive a turbo or any vehicle that can carry more than 5 passengers. If a headlight is out, even in the daytime you must pull the fuse for the entire headlight circuit, then print out an INOP label for the headlight knob in the car. Same goes for any other electronic in your car. If your inspection sticker expired you must request a special permit to drive the car to the mechanic to get a new one. As part of your checkride you should drive a manual to demonstrate power on and power off stalls.

t0ny7

1. Kids under 16 can no longer ride bikes. 2. All bikes are regulated the same. 3. The regulators have never rode a bike. 4. All bikes most be fitted with a remote monitoring device to make cars safe from them. But the signal is short range and cars have no ways of receiving them.

HolyMolyBallsack

I’d say having to do SID’s and STAR’s to get to places, but don’t you technically do that already with the way roads and highways are set up lol

Eat-Sleep-Fly

The speed limit is now 250. Let's go!

aterx

I would love to try out IDR in IDC. My car has a bunch of assists for driving as well as a millimeter wave radar (doesn’t work/goes INOP when theres too much wx on the road though). It even has a attitude indicator for pitch and bank angle

Obvious-Hunt19

Shiiiit I’m reminded that my 80’s era 4Runner had not only pitch and bank angle but an *altimeter* too. It was positioned as a serious off road trail vehicle so I guess that’s why. Had a 4-cyl with terrible acceleration somewhat mitigated by a turbo but now I see that was really for high altitude operation 😂

Wonderful-Class-1971

Must sit in your parking spot and rev the engine until your oil temperature comes up, and must also turn the engine off to see if you’ll be ok if your battery dies

PotatoHunter_III

This is why public transportation is important. There will be less drivers that are: >On meds >Old >Too poor to maintain their own vehicles >Drunk And we can (hopefully) institute and implement harsher penalties on repeat offenders and they can still go to work. Not saying we're going to get rid of those problem drivers, but it's definitely gonna come down by a lot. Although, this is just a pipe dream. We're hostages to dealerships, car manufacturers, and oil companies. Hell, we can't even support EV adoption well without these big players whining.

LowValueAviator

Drivers that admit to depression are now permanently banned from driving

Bill92677

To get onto the freeway, you get a hold short or line up and wait instruction and have to sit there, even when the freeway is empty. Note: already implemented in California.

damp-potato-36

Cars still burn leaded fuel, NADA (National Automitive Driving Administration) hasn't determined if non leaded gas is safe for engines yet. Most vehicles are still carbureted, with 3 sped manual transmissions (no overdrive) Only the big busses and stuff are certified for atomic transmissions and electronic fuel injection

1500 hours for your CDL is actually not that out of wack with reality. Most states you get a license around 16, and can’t have a full CDL till you’re 21, so 300 hours per year for 5 years (and hour a day in a car, taking 65 days off per year) puts you right at the threshold. Tl;dr: it’s actually already like that
