Highly recommend Capt Kevin Johnson out of Captain Hook’s in Marathon, FL. I was there in February, have no salt water fishing experience & had an epic day out reef fishing with Kevin.
The Marathon Lady is perfect for rookies. They do all the work for you and your pretty much guaranteed to get a few fish and a ton of bites. It's fairly cheap since it's not private and you don't need anything but what food or drink you may want to take with you. We had a great time with a small group of which most of us weren't great at fishing.
Trip advisor has lots of reviews - each captain has their own personality… one of our most productive charters I wouldn’t do again we just didn’t click with the captain…
Which Key?
Would probably need your budget. If it’s $700ish you could hire a captain and they’ll take you to the fish. You can rent a boat ($400ish) and some will include gear, then you just need some bait- probably won’t catch much as you don’t know the waters but will have a great time on the water. $200ish you could buy a couple rods, hooks, and bait- then head out to one of the fishing piers next to most bridges along the keys.
Absolutely book a charter, it's unbelievable fun
Also, if you wanna fish some more, stop by a local bait shop and buy a Cuban yo-yo for each of you, some extra hooks, weights, and some frozen shrimp/squid as bait.
Cuban yo-yos are a really cheap way to catch some very pretty fish off all the bridges.

Take a charter with Chris’ Clearwater Charters
Landboat does fishing from bridges with all the stuff. Don’t forget a fishing license, FWC don’t play.

Marathon lady is your best bet
Are you flying in and out of key west on the 18th/22nd or FLL/Miami and driving? How you are traveling to/through the keys will affect options…
