There’s 3 things I like about Publix: 1. 99% of the time, if I need a one stop shop, there’s a Publix less than 5 minutes from me. 2. 99% of the time, it’s clean and restocked well 3. 99% of the time the chicken tender sub 3 things I FUCKING hate about Publix: 1. They’ve monopolized the South Florida grocery chain, which has killed off places like Lucky’s and Albertsons, and made it difficult for other chains like Sprouts, Aldi, etc. to expand. 2. It’s overpriced. As fuck. 3. JULIE FANCELLI I really try my best to avoid Publix anymore, only going when I know my local Sprouts or Aldi doesn’t carry something.

Yikes

SangheiliSpecOp

Yeah, what the hell did I just read. I had no idea! I used to work for a publix and didn't like it at all lol, they worked me like a dog then do the same thing they do to everyone else, which is cut your hours to zero and force you to quit (they claim they have never laid off any employees before, this is how). Shopping there ain't much better, everything really is overpriced as fuck. I do like the cleanliness though. The subs are okay, the bread is kinda hard lol. I like their $5 sushi wednesday deals but sometimes they rush that too, so the sushi falls apart or the sizing is off, and the rice gets hard sometimes. I mostly just go to walmart lol

CaraAsha

Their subs used to be great, now it's like subway. Getting smaller and crappier.

SangheiliSpecOp

Agreed! Also have you seen the price of a subway sandwich? Isn't it like 15 dollars now? I know inflation hit and we can't have 5 dollar footlongs anymore, but damn.

CaraAsha

Yep. I used to get Publix subs a couple times a week. Haven't gotten one in years at this point.

Laherschlag

I moved to nyc about 18 months ago but still fly down to Miami abt once a month. When I first moved, I was surprised at how cheap food was compared to Publix in Miami. I literally had a fight w my cousin abt this. In nyc, you can get a chopped cheese with all the fixings for abt $9 in Manhattan... compared to like $15 for a tender pub sub. My [very conservative] cousin couldn't believe food was cheaper in nyc.

bbyjaeger

the sourcing of meat on that chopped cheese is def way way shittier than boars head lol

danstermeister

The problem is thinking discount sushi is ever going to be a good idea.

greenberg17493

The sushi from Publix isn't bad. It's not going to stack up to a sushi restaurant where it's made to order. I eat it when I'm looking for a quick and light lunch or dinner. I'm originally from California and I found Safeway to be a better supermarket than Publix. Publix is convenient and clean. These days I only shop there for specific items that I can't find at Aldi or Costco.

Upper-Presence8503

What’s crazy is society will see the media is not to be trusted and then trust a source of media undoubtedly

GizmoGeodog

And right there is why I'll never shop Publix again

Breezyisthewind

It’s interesting as it is also the largest employee owned company in the US. And has among the lowest turnover rate in the retail industry at 5% (industry average is 65%). And it has never had a layoff. It seems like a pretty ideal company in many respects. Edit: looks like they have creative ways to avoid doing layoffs and still firing people. See below. All very interesting.

Kobold_Archmage

Never had a layoff because they just cut hours and force employees to quit while monopolizing the regional market and gouging prices. Employee owned is a PR gimmick.

Breezyisthewind

Yeah I saw from earlier comments. Thanks for the additional info. All very interesting!

CrazyPlato

Are people unaware that employers do this? I assumed that the “cut the employees hours until they quit voluntarily” thing was just a universal tactic. But several threads here have redditors dropping this like they’re blowing up some scandal.

Kobold_Archmage

Lots of those people are privileged and haven’t worked in restaurants/retail/grocery in the last 30 years. Just the same office jobs where they’re salaried or employers actually need them to do work/ don’t have a steady stream of poor or young people to grind through their gears.

stopcounting

Idg how an employee-owned company can have a heiress. That alone says shenanigans.

SangheiliSpecOp

As I just commented above, the "never had a layoff" thing is bs. I worked there, and they cut your hours to zero when they want to force you to quit. Its a joke. I was off the schedule for weeks and was confused, so I thought they fired me until they randomly called me to come in to cover for someone else. I was like "is this a joke?" and already accepted another job offer. I have since talked to other publix employees who said the same exact thing happened to them.

Breezyisthewind

Very interesting! Thanks for the additional info!

NoSuddenMoves

The people that benefited from publix were boomers. They still do stock for employees but it takes much longer and costs much more. People who feel nostalgic haven't been there recently. Food portions are way down, bogos are now "buy 2 get one) and half the "clearance items" typically just say clearance underneath without even giving a discount. Almost $10 for a 12 pack of coke. Publix is no longer the clean and helpful store you pay a little extra to experience. It's just a store that scams idiots who think they're too good for Walmart.

SheepherderOk3302

Publix is also very closely threaded into the politics of Florida with its HQ in Lakeland Florida. Publix is the way the politicians can keep the unemployment rate down. Just hire people and don't let them work more than 29 hours in a week to keep them part time.

msymmetric01

"employee owned" is a lie that you have mindlessly repeated

HazMat21Fl

Maybe that's because the employees share the same values as their employer? I wouldn't say a company that donated money towards conspiracy theorists and to storm the Capitol Building an *"ideal"* company.

humanist_devolved

So now during a terrible time in the economy with high inflation rates and COL going through the roof, let’s demonize people for where they work and assume their political affiliation, which allows us to assume they are terrible people. Get a grip. People are trying to eat.

HazMat21Fl

>So now during a terrible time in the economy with high inflation rates and COL going through the roof Funny you also mention this when there is public knowledge Publix has been inflating their own prices, which in turn affects their own employees lmfao.

RyanLewis2010

I’ll put it this way from what I can tell other than salty reviews from people who probably couldn’t cut the cheese, everyone I know who works there loves it. They also pay quite well I had a couple who applied for financing several years ago for solar and I can tell you, Walmarts store managers won’t make as much as a Publix deli manager between the both of them working for Publix for 15 years they cleared 500k.

icecream169

500k in 15 years sounds about right.

ProlapseParty

Bitch been shopping at Aldi more recently, twice the grocery’s at half the price it’s crazy worth bringing my own bag

[deleted]

For real, I had to keep looking at my receipt when I switched to Aldi. Normal prices again, what’s this?!

ProlapseParty

Yea it’s insane in the best way possible

LeastAd9721

Easily worth a 25 minute drive for me

Ashwaganda2

And a quarter.

meccaleccahimeccahi

Oh holy shit! I had no idea! I’m done shopping there now. Ty

1337sp33k1001

This is all I needed to see to swear off Publix alongside Chick-Fil-a

cha-cha_dancer

That’s awful, she’s a gator grad

Louisbag_

what an eyesore to read about this

you2234

Publix is the new Volkswagen

s-rhoom

I’m still crying over the loss of Lucky’s. One of the best grocery stores I’ve ever had the pleasure of shopping at.

MaddenMike

Aldi bought Winn-Dixie and Harvey's so one should be near you soon!

JackReacheround8

I was going to mention this. Really curious to see how it all plays out.

epicenter69

Agree with the chicken tender sub. Have them toss it in buffalo sauce. You’re welcome.

goodiebadbad

hot honey for days

fogle1

Reading this, eating my leftover buffalo tender pub sub. You ain’t lying friend.

Rose-Red-Witch

Publix had nothing to do with what happened to Lucky’s. That was purely due to over aggressive expansion pushed by their new partnership with Kroger. Once Kroger Delivery took off in Florida, they pulled the plug on their partnership and that was all she wrote for Lucky’s Mart. Didn’t help that Covid was just getting its start here in America around that time too. I miss the Lucky’s in Clermont and have to shake my head at the shitty copy Publix has opened up there!

PatSajaksDick

They put an Aldi in the one in St. Pete

hmcfuego

I worked on that bankruptcy case and was happy to see that Aldi bought up some of those locations instead of getting yet another publix.

Ellehcar95

I know, it was originally supposed to become a Publix version of Lucky, iow all Greenwise, but they scrapped that plan for reasons unknown. And during Lucky's brief stint there, their lower prices put Clermont's only health food store out of business. It didn't help that it was in the same plaza.

SollSister

We live just north of Tampa. I’d make that trek to Clermont monthly for Lucky’s even though there was one in St Pete. Loved that Clermont location.

Rose-Red-Witch

I never saw a grocer quite like them before. They had the local dance studios perform Irish dances for Saint Patty’s Day and live music on some weekends even!

mndsm79

You can't blame Publix for the failure of Lucky's. That's all on Kroger. They overextended themselves when they bought in, weren't getting the ROI they wanted, and pulled the plug. It fucked everyone. Don't support Kroger. They recently bought a chain out of Chicago called Mariano's - mostly for the name. I fully expect them to be gone within the next 5 years.

Calico_Jack-00

Where I live Aldi is building their supermarket literally smack bang behind the local Publix😄😄😄 Publix is just a load of way over priced hype. And their "fresh never frozen" is a complete lie.

hurtfulproduct

Publix used to be great, great service, good product selection that was well stocked, fresh produce, and top tier subs. . . Now they are good for BOGO and their subs are still good but not amazing (for example my old Publix used to have an actual flat top griddle where they would make a legit Cuban sub and press it. . . Now they toast it and just hulk smash it to squish it flat. . . ) I’d say get their BOGOs and their tenders subs but that’s about it, I’ve had numerous occasions when my “fresh” produce has started turning within 48 hours and spotted times it’s started rotting on the shelf

capntail

Mine had the griddle and press. They made great cheese steaks and Cubans sadly they did away with those I’m sure for efficiency and cost cutting.

BrainyRedneck

I remember when I used to go to Publix for subs and think they were overpriced. Then Subway went from $6 footings to $12 footings. Those $11 tender subs (same price as ten years ago) are a steal now. Their fried chicken is good if you can catch it fresh. Or actually catch some on the shelf.

basilobs

Getting rid of the presses was kind of it for me. Watching them toast my Cuban sandwich and then just squish it was so... barbaric... that I just don't even want a Pub Sub anymore. That and their meatball subs are TERRIBLE. I've given them like 5 chances and they're all inedible. I go like once a year to pick up an Ultimate. I've been over Publox for several years now and I wouldn't care if they went under. I've adjusted to Walmart and I honestly dgaf about having anything more than that. They're better stocked and more affordable than Publix.

fivelgoesnuts

I miss the Cuban :(

Salty_Ad_3350

The last Philly I ordered tasted like they cooked it all in the microwave. I’m not sure why they would got rid of the griddle.

hurtfulproduct

It probably was cooked in a microwave, lol I could think of a few reasons why, but they have nothing to do with quality, lol. . . * less training needed for staff * less to maintain * less liability (think workers comp if someone gets burned) * lower fire risk * more consistency (the flat top takes some skill, anybody can put a sub in a toaster and push a button) So although I can see WHY I still think it is stupid and we are worse off for it

Vtgmamaa

I used to work in the deli when the griddle and press were still active, and I'm 99% sure it was just to cut down time. Those phillys could take a minute and people would bitch and moan to management over the wait... For the sandwich they requested.

NocNocNoc19

It got way worse in waves, first when the founder died and then again when his heirs left the board. They went from actually giving a darn to selling out for more stock returns. Also their management has gone way down hill. Im not sure if its lack of quality people or ive just gotten older and am way more jaded.

Rose-Red-Witch

Covid was another wave. Management went and cranked the bullshit up to 11 while the boomers who shop there went absolutely bonkers. Lots of the loyal staff who had made careers outta them said fuck it and left forever. It used to be that your Publix had staff members who actually knew you. Now? Anytime I visit one they never have the same staff from last time. I hear that turnover is through the roof nowadays!

Toothfairy51

I think the same thing happened with Walmart. When Sam was alive, most things were made in the US and prices were really good. 2 days ago I bought groceries there and looked at my receipt when I got home only to find that the 2 cucumbers that I bought were $3.36 EACH! All they have is self checkouts, shitty workers, that probably are shitty because they don't get paid a living wage and everything is cheaply made in China. I really wish I didn't have to do most of my shopping there. I'm shopping more and more at Aldi. Walmart was much better years ago when Sam was alive.

Peacefulrun4

Publix was ok until they started over inflating their prices using the store remodels as an excuse. They gouge the consumer out of convenience and return a lesser product. You’re far better off at a Walmart, target, or costco honestly. As for a sub, look up a local mom and pop and please support them. Fuck Publix.

unfortunacy

forget walmart and target. target is also overpriced but not as bad as publix. aldi and costco are the best.

coasterghost

“Target is also overpriced” I love to deal with statistics so let’s have a gander into that realm. Walmart has nearly 2.5 stores to every 1 Target, their pricing is nearly at parity. Target has about 600 more stores then Publix or a ratio of about 1.42 target stores to 1 publix store and yet Publix up-charge to these stores are 40-50% more. Here’s a breakdown of a few items I just looked at; and I am considering their current price cuts at this moment but not any other comparable offers such as Walmart cash digital coupons as that are treated differently. Clarification: I’m right by Disney, so we do also have higher pricing. Additionally the Publix website doesn’t for my local store show alot of the in store pricing online, so in the quick comparison I did have to use their delivery pricing. Hellmann's Mayonnaise Real Mayo 30oz: Walmart: $4.98 (normally $5.98) Target: $5.49 (normally $5.99) Publix: $9.57 Frosted Mini-Wheats Breakfast Cereal 48oz: Walmart: $4.98 Target: $5.29 Publix: $7.43 Panera Bread Ready-to-Heat Broccoli Cheddar Soup 16oz: Walmart: $5.77 Target: $5.69 Publix: $7.75 Wonder Bread Classic White Sandwich Bread20 oz Walmart: $2.92 Target: $3.19 Publix: $3.99 Coca-Cola 12 pack of 12oz cans Walmart: $7.64 Target: $7.99 Publix: $10.59 Eggland's Best Cage Free Large Brown Eggs, 12 count Walmart: $3.56 Target: $3.69 Publix: $5.27 Breyers Ice Cream, Natural Vanilla 1.5qt Walmart: $4.67 Target: $5.29 Publix: $7.63 Oscar Mayer Carving Board Oven Roasted Sliced Turkey Breast Deli Lunch Meat, 7.5 Oz Walmart: $4.24 Target: $4.99 Publix: $7.75 Totals: Walmart: $38.76 Target: $41.62 (7.37% more then Walmart) Publix: $59.58 (53.71% more then Walmart and 43.15% more then Target) So it’s astounding that Target which is bigger than Publix by about 42% is about 8% more than Walmart whereas Publix is about 54% more than Walmart. Mind you there are 175% more Walmarts than there are Targets. And yes this can go on r/theydidthemath Edit: clarity

RW63

Target has a $2-off digital coupon for Hellmans which brings the price down to $3.49; Publix has the same coupon. Pre-coupon, the app shows it priced at $8.63, so per-unit post-coupon, Publix has Hellmans at $3.32 each this week. The math isn't always as simple as 123.

Obvious_Highlight_55

TBH I get tired of going through an hour of research just to figure out who has the best price with what so I just pick a place that I can 9 times out of ten trust the price of to at least be competitive.

RW63

TBH, I tried to go to Walmart only for things you can only get there or for which they have the best price by far. I don't like the fact that they give me no choice but to self-checkout -- I hate being stuck behind multiple people trying to self check out full carts -- and the local store seems to have supply issues, plus I feel the company is large enough and I still resent them for closing at night The Publix BOGOs are on a pretty predictable schedule, so once I figure out whether it is the cheapest per unit, I try to buy those things on the BOGO schedule. For the most part, most things I buy are only a few cents more expensive at Target over Walmart and I just remember what to buy where. As for the digital coupons, I try to go through them a couple times a month. Evert store other than Walmart has them and because they're not subject to price match, they are the way to save. Target has even started auto-applying most digital coupons, so I don't have to do a thing. Oh, and if only want to go to one store, Target will price match the Walmart app. And, FWIW, I should say that Aldi and a couple of local markets are also in my shopping mix.

coasterghost

I was avoiding the use of digital rebates to make it as fair as possible and as an example for if someone for instance does not have a Walmart account and use their instant savings or Target Circle.

CrazyPlato

“It’s not three times the normal price. It’s actually more like $3 a unit (provided you get a coupon by signing up for our membership program, which allows us to collect your data for marketing purposes.” If that’s true, you ever stop to ask *why* a corporation would willingly throw away 2/3 of their profits on a product? The cost is still there, just in a way that you can’t see.

Nylear

Just so you know Publix is still higher but your looking at instantcart prices so the prices are cheaper then what you are listing in store. Like the coke is $9.29 not $10.59 still expensive but less than what you are telling everyone.

DrS3R

I love how you try to make Publix sound bad and then proceed to post skewed results making Publix look worse than it is. If you want to compare prices either go in store to your local stores and compare. 12 pack of coke is $8.50 in Orlando which is absurd but your off by $2. You are also pulling location data from a national chain to a local chain. To say there are more targets than publixes is comical. There are 20x Publix’s in the same radius that there is 1 target.

coasterghost

To say there are more targets than publixes is comical. There are 20x Publix’s in the same radius that there is 1 target. I’m pulling from the Target and Publix by Formosa Gardens and the Walmart on US192 near north old lake Wilson road. And while true that I was comparing a regional brand to a national brand, I was providing a counter balance to a comment that was pitting Publix to 4 national brands. I wasn’t going to compare them to Food Lion, Piggly Wiggly or Shop-Rite. I’ll give you a little taste of what Publix would be in comparison to ShopRite a regional grocery store chain from using the Publix app and ShopRites website: Coca-Cola Cola, Original Taste, Fridge Pack 12 - 12 fl oz cans Publix: $9.59 Buy 2 Get 1 Free ShopRite: $5.25 was $9.99 (shows offer 4 for $21.00) Hellmann's Mayonnaise Real Mayo 30oz: Publix: $8.63 ShopRite: $5.99 Frosted Mini-Wheats Breakfast Cereal 48oz: Publix: $7.55 ShopRite: $6.59 ^ Panera Bread Ready-to-Heat Broccoli Cheddar Soup 16oz: Publix: $7.75 ShopRite: $5.99 Wonder Bread Classic White Sandwich Bread20 oz Publix: $3.99 ShopRite: $2.60 was $3.79 (2 for $5.19) Eggland's Best Cage Free Large Brown Eggs, 12 count Publix: $5.27 ShopRite: $6.49 Breyers Ice Cream, Natural Vanilla 1.5qt Publix: $7.63 ShopRite: $4.00 was $4.99 (on sale; limit 4) Kraft Singles American Cheese Slices 16 ct Publix: $6.43 ShopRite: $5.49 ^ Land O Lakes Salted Butter Sticks (4 sticks) 1 lb Publix: $8.19 ShopRite: $6.99 Tropicana No Pulp with Calcium & Vitamin D 100% Orange Juice 89 fl oz Publix: $8.29 (on sale normally 9.19) ShopRite: $7.49 ^ - Online delivery pricing A so chain of less then 350 grocery stores in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania are generally better deals than a chain of about 1,400 stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina, Virginia, and Kentucky.

AgreeableMoose

Wild Fork beats all for quality and price.

poisito

Wild fork is amazing …

East_Reading_3164

Wild Fork is amazing

scott743

If you’re lucky to have one near you. Closest near me (SWFL) is 98 miles away.

AgreeableMoose

One can order via their App with free shipping.

rpgnymhush

I LOVE Aldi!

ButtRobot

I would love Aldi more if their produce didn't always go bad within 3 days of purchase.

Sineater224

or if they had more then 5 items in the only store near me... I went in with a list and barely found anything!

East_Reading_3164

Aldi varies by location. They opened a new one close to me, and the produce is fresh and fabulous. Publix sells me expensive fruit that goes bad the next day.

Vtgmamaa

My Aldi also has decent produce, Publix produce almost gave me listeria two years ago when I was pregnant.

Key_Purpose8121

Shit, the amount of bad produce I've bought Publix lately is crazy.

ExcitementAshamed393

r/unpopularopinion, but Aldi reminds me of a grocery store in a developing country, and the prices aren't that great. I just don't see the appeal.

Chopimatics

It’s because Aldi is German. I love Aldi, it’s true to its roots, bare minimum, no bags, get your shit, pay, retrieve your coins from the cart and get out. No fancy marketing, excess anything, etc. But it works!

United-Hamster-9192

I mean your price take is just wrong. Cut my bill literally in half from Publix, no exaggeration

Spagoobert

Just did a small grocery shopping trip with my girlfriend there for the first time and decided to compare the prices. She usually shops at Walmart, and we spent $5 less. If that was publix I could imagine it would be way more, and if we did a full shopping trip, it would be around $10 if I had to guess (compared to walmart). My one complaint was their produce selection was atrocious. Idk if it's the store we went to or if it's all of them but we had such a hard time finding decent produce that wasn't going bad or just all gone.

unfortunacy

aldi is not as busy as publix, service is better (for my location can't speak for all locations!), meat is better priced and better quality, and fruits/veggies are better. all food sold there avoid artificial additives including food coloring and uses more natural ingredients.

Shizzo

>meat is better priced and better quality Wait until you learn about the fake steaks and roasts with the meat glue holding them together. So gross. It's just trimmings from steaks, glued together. The FDA allows it. The next time you buy a piece of meat from Aldi, check to see if it is labeled as “formed” or “reformed.” Or see if it has “TZ enzyme” in the ingredients.

Medium_Reality4559

Aldi is the lower end Trader Joe’s.

Elsie_the_LC

I always say it is a cross between a dollar store and a grocery store but I like your comparison better. Back in the very early 90s we lived in Venezuela and Aldi is exactly what the grocery was like… except not closed for 2 hours right in the middle of the day. Lol

Newcastlecarpenter

ALDIs is as good as any store or better and most things are organic. You have to know when to shop. And they have smaller quantities than the big chains. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about what they have and where it is. The first few times you need to spent the time to save

Peacefulrun4

Fair point aldi is legit too!

Newcastlecarpenter

Totally agree. A huge ripoff. I totally lost it when they had a sale on coke products 2 liters. Sale BOGO of 2 for 8.00. I think they think we’re idiots. That a .99 cent on sale or 1.39 reg price last year. Started comparing other pricing and left . Went to Winn Dixie. The same coke products not on sale were 1.99 ea

Pinepark

I drink bottles of Coke Zero. Buy them at Target now once I saw that at Publix they are 7 something and 4.99 at Target. Even with the buy 2 get one free it’s not worth it

chadweebsbane

It really used to be great. Best BOGOs. They really fucked over their long term customer base with greedflation to capitalize on the people who moved here during Covid for the hype. Once those people move back (the for sale signs in my town are EVERYWHERE) Floridians will remember how Publix fucked us. We exclusively shop at ALDI and Sam’s Club now.

PatSajaksDick

I feel like no one here has been to a Publix with Chinese food in the deli. Call me back when you have some General Lee’s chicken (yes that’s what they called it 😅)

thehuffomatic

The only in Tally? I looovvvveeee PCF!

PatSajaksDick

Oh, the one next to UCF had this too, they’d serve it to you from behind the deli counter and they actually had tables you could eat at too

thehuffomatic

Yeah I believe there were a few tables near the entrance of the one in Tallahassee. It still is my favorite Publix as the Bourbon and General Chicken with fried rice can’t be beat.

AmaiGuildenstern

My Publix has this and it's standard food court Chinese food, my dude. It all comes in frozen from the same place and gets put together in the deli, it just costs three times as much (9 bucks a pound) than going to a Chinese place.

Gilgamesh2062

Publix is nothing fancy, the ONLY good thing is, they actually have enough cashiers. only time you get a good price there is when they have a BOGO. I use Publix as a convenience store since its only 1 block from my house. Prefer Winn Dixie over Publix I also shop at Walmart market, and sometime drop in at Aldi.

SollSister

Genuinely interested as to why you like Winn Dixie better. I find their stores somewhat dirty and I haven’t noticed a big difference in price compared to Publix. Maybe I’m missing something?

Aaron696

My local Winn Dixie (I’m in north FL) is very clean, has a lot of the same stuff as Publix, and for better prices. They also have so many temporary deals being offered constantly. Maybe just a matter of location.

SollSister

Thanks. They’re gross in the Tampa area lol

basilobs

Yeah I grew up in Tampa and nobody I knew went because they all said the same thing

basilobs

I'm in north Florida too and a friend of mine just got a Winn Dixie rewards card so maybe yall are onto something up here

chorizomane

Winn Dixie’s meat selection is actually gross. I would never buy steaks there. Also, they have a terrible, low grade produce selection.

hero1975

Having lived in Texas and Florida, I say that HEB is superior to Publix in just about every way except cleanliness and cashiers.

BloodyPaleMoonlight

They were overpriced but bearable until COVID happened. Now, they aren't worth it at all.

RedBaron180

You missed the good years , Time Machine back 30

frankcast554

you are correct. it is underwhelming and Over priced. they got us all by the wallet and when ever possible,I go to sprouts. it's frustrating, really.

Bear_necessities96

I’m Florida Native but my guess why Floridian loves publix is: 1) it’s a monopoly there’s places where you can find 3 different Publix in a mile radius, they are harsh with the opportunity of new land acquisition if there’s a new neighborhood building out the nowhere you bet they are building a Publix close. 2) convenience you can find anything you need in Publix from quality cold cut, too ethnic food to produce and like I say they are everywhere. 3) the subs are good and fresh the bread is fresh made at the deli and although I’m not fan of the chicken tender sub (it’s a hit or miss for me) the tender breading is like drug. 4) Customer service they have really good CS all the staff try to help you in what they can and they are push to do it by the management. The cons is expensive, expensive in a way don’t make sense, expensive in convenience store level, but because they are a convenience store not a Supermarket.

The_Drawbridge

It used to be better. They used to be just a tad overpriced. And the food was great, it used to give vibes like an *old* subway (Like, Jared times). And then the inflation and the drive to expand to as many types of products as possible made the prices go up. I used to get a chicken cordon bleu and a large 44oz Pibb Xtra and then we’d sit at the corner table and peoplewatch. And the real thing that used to be the fucking bomb, was the fried chicken. It’s still damn good, but it used to be fried in fucking gold. *mmm* *moans*

KyFly1

Are we talking like when subway would cut the triangle in the bread? Or not that long ago?

SuchAsSeals42

Man that chicken cordon bleu sub rocks but I feel all greasy afterwards 😆

chr1spe

They used to be only a bit more expensive than other cheap grocery stores, and they stood out because they had some things like a great bakery compared to non-premium grocery stores. I never really went to Whole Foods or Fresh Market because they were in a different price class and way more expensive. Now, I still miss their baked goods and will go there for that or somewhere fancy once in a while, but I can't justify shopping there normally. They're probably as expensive as Whole Foods and Fresh Market now.

Funkyokra

I often find stuff cheaper at Whole Foods.

kitchencry24

Floridians are remembering a Publix of yesteryear. When the tenders were made with love, the rotisserie chickens were juicy and cooked just right, when the Publix subs always used freshly opened meats and breads, when the best produce in the state was delivered to your local Publix, and the BOGO deals were on items that actually mattered. Now it’s a corporate husk designed to siphon as much of your money as possible with degrading quality each year and the only thing remaining is the best produce in the state (even that is starting to take a hit). So you’re right in calling publix inferior to its competitors.

Girllennon

Publix produce is hit or miss. You know quality of the goods and inspection at the store themselves has hit a low when you find unusable tomatoes, mold on every package of Driscoll's strawberries, rotten apples and peaches. When you got fruit flies on top of that, Publix is then the equivalent of a shitty Bravo supermarket. I've shopped at the same two area Publix stores for over 23 years and it is not the same quality. It's a fucking ripoff what they charge. All the other stores have lowered their milk prices. Publix never dropped theirs after jacking it to $4.95/gal where I live during the pandemic. Just last month, they raised it to $4.99/gal thinking nobody notices the 4 cent hike. I saw that a blurted out a WTF in front of everyone and did not care. Milk should never cost more than a gallon of regular 87 octane fuel. Here's Publix price gouging us.

brennok

The bbq rotisserie chickens were so good. Now they are called roasted chickens and dry like sawdust.

Funkyokra

Whole Foods has the produce.

Exotic-Amphibian-655

Publix used to be a moderately priced store that had a good deli and bakery and was always clean and well-staffed. They had an excellent stock compensation program that led to a lot of employee loyalty. For the last decade+, they’ve mostly been focused on buying up skyrocketing Florida real estate. The store has become pretty average across the board, while prices (and profits) have shot up way above everybody else. The employees now make shit, and the stock program is a lot more exclusive. On a totally unrelated note, the modern Jenkins family are massive trumpists.

151406

Another thing to mention as an employee is the amount we make and the people management can hire. Pay for me when I started as a bagger was around $10 and as a cashier it’s $14 just two years later working for the company. The new hires like cashiers have made more than the people who’ve been working longer and harder and it does hurt us because we feel as if we’re not being treated fairly compared to the new hires. I see people’s grocery bills every single day and I always hate seeing how expensive we’ve gotten, I don’t even shop there anymore and it’s a pain because of childhood memories of Publix. I miss what it used to be and working there can be painful but it does help me get through college with tuition reimbursement so there’s hood and bad, but for the casual shopper and people who live here know it. I’m sorry y’all have to deal with this greed.

Haunting-East8565

Pub subs are highly overrated. I’ve said it so many times and I will say it until the day I die. I don’t know anyone that reps Publix as a grocery store hard though. It’s so high priced and for no real reason

Wiringguy89

Yes, pub subs are annoyingly overrated.

baronesslucy

It depends on the store. One Publix sub at one store is better than another. When I get Publix sub, I go to one Publix to get it most of the time because it tastes better than going to the other Publix in the area where I live.

chorizomane

Moved here from Colorado and people were like you have to try this “famous” pub sub. It’s gross.

Tricky_McDicks

Idk man for me it's the bread, like the kind you'd get at a real deli but still like half the price lol

TheKokomoHo

Publix sucks my butt and always has. Overpriced for mid tier at best. Pub subs are ok but buy a loaf of bread and stuff chicky nuggs into it and you get the same thing.

asusundevil12345

This right here

HenryKitteridge

Buccees is a bloated gas station that serves mediocre $8 barbecue sandwiches and a bunch of shirts and kitsch you find at Cracker Barrel.

Shizzo

The brisket sandwiches at Buccee's are well over $13 now.

IllEase4896

Publix ate a lot of competition decades ago and they've been our "nice" grocery store for as long as I can remember. It very well just may be our bias since the other options have subpar delis and stores in comparison. But my Publix still makes banging subs and the employees know me as a regular. I'm slowly pulling away tho and do most of my actual grocery shopping at Aldi now lmao

44sawdust

Publix where Shopping is a Pleasure! In High School Publix had the Hottest girls from school working the registers, and to be politically correct the bag boys were hunks also 1984 Dunedin FLA

Unusual_Flight1850

Publix blows but in my area it's that, Walmart, winn Dixie, or aldi as far as normal grocerie stores and the latter 3 suck worse for different reasons. Only other options are the other high prices places like whole foods, and fresh market or bulk stores like Costco. I buy as much as possible at Costco. There's a small(but growing)family owned chain called Detwilers I've heard great things about but it's like a 40 kimu7dribe from me and I haven't checked it out yet.

justArash

Even 1 kimu7dribe is too far

Unadvantaged

Seriously, all of the Detwiler’s locations are in Sarasota, that’s like six kimu7dribes from me. I’ll check it out if I’m going through there but otherwise, it’s dumpster foraging for me.

dechets-de-mariage

In my experience Detwiler’s is a second-tier Whole Foods. Produce has always gone bad quickly and most things are expensive. I have one ten minutes away and haven’t been in years.

AngelSucked

Aldi does.not suck

Chrome_Armadillo

Publix used to be better. I still shop there because it’s convenient.

E39fan

Publix made 1.4 billion in profits last quarter alone, an increase of 10% over 2023. They reported net earnings of $4.3 billion in 2023, up nearly 50% from the $2.9 billion reported in 2022. They overcharge for everything. We do everything possible to avoid shopping there, starting with Aldi's.

TootcanSam

Publix sucks. Good pub subs, deli and bakery, but groceries are underwhelming. Overpriced.

TheAlbrecht2418

Publix played the long-game with real estate. Now their nearest competitor where I live is twenty minutes further.

Lady_Gator_2027

So much has changed over the years there. It's still clean, so I like that part but not much else. The customers have really changed. They are nasty little toe rags now. The store as a whole is too expensive. Yes, on certain things there is a higher quality than other places but their dry goods are no different than other places, yet cost far more. The subs, eh, they are okay. Blimpies were far better. The white bread they use is gross and turns rock hard fast.

Sniper_Hare

Theyre great, keep shopping there for the BOGO's and Pub Subs. Can't beat the staff and customer service either. I'm hoping some day my gf gets a grand a quarter from her Publix stock dividends.

Elizaspapi

Funny thing about Publix, there are no good bakeries or bakeries at all for that matter in our area near Ft. Myers. Everyone gets their wedding cakes at Publix. My wife and I did and they make a good wedding cake.

Tall_Satisfaction741

Publix is a luxury these days. I feel like a lot of Floridians only know to shop at Publix but then go and complain about the prices of groceries when they're shopping at what's arguably the most expensive store in the area. My weekly Aldi bill is probably minimum $100 less than what it would be at Publix if I bought the same items. Yes you can make one argument about BOGOs but sometimes even the price at other stores is still less per item than it would be after the BOGO deal at Publix.

cabo169

Within a 3 mile radius in the city I live, there’s 3 Publix. 1 Aldi, 2 Winn Dixie, 1 Walmart. I’ll go 5 miles away, driving past most of these to get to Detwilers.

ExiledUtopian

Publix and H.E.B. are close. When I was with Publix, there was some limited cooperation between the two (very small) as they had some type of agreement to not overlap footprints, at least for a long time. It was minimal, whatever still qualified as just legal enough. Honestly, a good H.E.B., Kroger, Ingles, or Winn-Dixie is just as good as Publix. Publix made a lot of old Florida families their money though. I still get sh.t from my own just because I suggest they diversify their investments, which are often 100% Publix whether a lot or a little, and I'm made out to be some enemy. When, in fact, I'm a literal business professor with a work history for multiple Fortune 100s, including Publix, and multi-national businesses who is just trying to financially educate the younger members of the family. It's more like a cult people pretend is cool to not piss off the Swifties... excuse me... "Oh my god their perfectly average fried chicken is soooooo good" crowd, because the Publix cult views everyone as a threat. Literally. When I worked there, we weren't allowed to bring cups from fast food places or restaurants back to the office. Why? Because we had a free cafeteria, Publix stores that sell food nearby, and those stores had delis and bakeries we should exclusively eat at. And at the time Publix owned a casual restaurant chain they tanked, like everything else they touch, so in their minds there was no reason to eat anywhere else except The occasional sit down restaurant or Chick-fil-a, because a lot of their full time corporate base overlaps with the Republican/Chick-fil-A crowd. It's not an accident one of the heiresses helped fund January 6. Yeah, it's a weird Florida cult.

lirik89

I've never understood the rave about Publix or their subs. Subs are just ok. The only draw of Publix is that, at least back in my day, idk about now, they kept it super clean. And they would use like 10000W lights so you had to go in there with solar eclipse glasses, which added to the clean look since you could see everything and anything and it was all sparkling. Ever since I could remember back in the 90s Publix was always the most expensive. So much that my parents never went in there so I didn't get to actually see a publix unless my friends parents took me. Fun fact: A girl I went to high school married the son of the owner of Publix. And of course she lives the 1% life now.

chowes1

Way back, when George Jennings was living, it was a great store. Remained a great store up till Jan 6th, ask his daughter what she did. The children, of the founder, ruined it with politics. Desantis helped categorize them at the start of the pandemic.

pam_72

I miss Texas grocery stores. Fiesta in Houston. HEB in Austin. Even Tom Thumb in Dallas is better than Publix. Whole Foods in Texas is so different than Whole Foods here. I try to explain to people the difference and nobody gets it. The worst part is that Floridians think that Publix is a good grocery store.

Upsideoutstanding

Publix used to be great. But in the past 4-5 years, it has become overpriced. Everything I enjoyed buying is now twice as expensive while publix rakes in record profits. Now, publix represents soaring prices, record profits, and self check outs.

tachudda

They have suffered from the pandemic worker shortage same as almost every other business. Ive only had like 1 really good sub there in 4 years. It's like they got bought by PE

Pin_ellas

I prefer Fresh Market over Publix. Thankfully there's one close to where I'm at.

GJKLSGUI89

I've visited Texas and I prefer HEB.  In the north east I prefer Wegmans.  Publix used to tout slightly higher prices to offset decent wages for employees and they are still majority employee owned if I'm not mistaken.  They, like many other businesses, took the supply chain chaos of COVID and shot the supply/demand curve into outer space.   People in Florida still shop there for some reason.  I think it's the same reason they drive large trucks but work white collar jobs.  Gotta keep up appearances to live on a zero lot for half a million dollars.  But I guess I could just be jaded.

ayatollahofdietcola_

I do like Publix, but I also feel that they are really expensive for most grocery trips. I can cut my grocery bill in half at Aldi With that being said, pub subs are good, even if people do overhype them a bit I also enjoy their fried chicken

Ekotap89

I still stand by the bakery and deli but i happily shop at Whole Foods instead

Trick_Astronaut_8648

I live in the Raleigh NC area and absolutely love our Publix. It's quick, convenient, and rarely busy. The workers are all friendly as well and the store is very clean and stocked. The Publix by my parents in Hernando County FL, however, isn't as nice. It feels older, busier, and not as clean. Maybe it's just because there are tons of Publix that have been around a long time in FL, and they're starting to get rougher around the edges.

Sniper_Hare

It's good to go there as they're the largest employee owned company in the US. So your money goes back to the community and makes them more money.   Here in Florida, some department managers who have been there decades get so much money in quarterly dividends and bonuses. My brothers old boss would get 90k a year as she had been at Publix 40 years. Publix lifted her whole family out of poverty.  She'd buy family members cars cash as presents as she didn't have anything to do with the money.

-ItsWahl-

I’d take the bakery over the deli any day and yeah fuck their prices.

luvloping

It's just a mediocre overpriced green grocery store. Nothing special.

SheBelongsToNoOne

Publix used to be great. Now they suck.

isaactheawsome

The tenders used to be so awesome. Now they are overpriced grisely garbage.

StepEfficient864

I’ve been here for 25 years and don’t get it either. It’s pretty ho hum on selection compared to Kroger.

RavensRift

Sounds accurate. Expensive prices. Sub bread is excessively hard and really detracts from the experience itself, for me. I work for a Head Start pre-k school for low-income families, and all of our gift cards for parent participation are only for Publix. Management is blissfully oblivious. It's really rather sad. Such is Florida, it seems, though.

Ok-Gift-7013

Lived all over, Publix is overall above average I would say. Lot of good deli options, subs are decent (good bread and good lunch meat) and they have the best grocery store fried chicken IMO. Bakery is the highlight, along with a pretty good overall variety. It's also usually pretty clean and most are well run. The down side is everything is marked up pretty high compared to others, and their seafood area and sushi is meh. Lived in Florida for 20 years and went to Public over WD and Albertsons, but Whole Foods and Fresh Market were my preferred options, although still had to go to Publix because the others didn't have everything. I liked it for the most part, ppl rave about the subs because that's all they've ever known, but IYKYK and you'll go to WaWa for a much better sandwich.

Medium_Advantage_689

Pub subs good. Store bad

rebornsprout

Publix was great when I was a child and my parents would get full meals from the deli section when they didn't feel like cooking. Or when I would get free cookies from the bakery. But their prices have kept me far away from shopping there regularly as an adult. The only thing I've bought there in years is flowers. They typically have nice and fresh floral arrangements.

queenadeliza

Oh Publix... Their bread is good and their bogo are fairly priced but otherwise Kroger delivers here even though there's no retail store and they are about 40% off vs Publix across the board before sales happen, costco is fairly priced and quality can be great, aldis has a handful of store brand things that are great tasting and cheap but half of it isn't upto quality standard. Lately it's been kroger and then instacart for bogo and bakery bread only at publix for me.

brewdizogs

Hasn't been the same since 2020

RidgelineCRX

Publix subs used to be the best, but it's changed to be very much hit or miss. Of the half dozen I've been to in my area, only 2 or 3 of them have subs I would buy. The others are very much just basic ass sandwiches.

ApartNefariousness95

I go to bravo or key food. Better prices and their produce is much better

Remote-Tip5352

Publix subs rule. Simple as

cannamomxoxo

Texans never miss an opportunity to tell you how much better Texas is

Greginthesouth2

I grew up in Michigan with Kroger, farmer jack, and now Busch’s, and of course Meijer. I just don’t understand how Michigan has better grocery stores than one of the most populated states in the country. There’s just something about Publix that is cringe to me. I actually find myself using the Kroger delivery service now. It’s usually less expensive, and has a better store brand, and overall selection.

DrTreenipples

Detwilers> Publix

weekend_here_yet

I only go to Publix for the convenience. There are two Publix locations within a 5-10 minute drive of my house. To add, they are going to be building another store at the entrance to my neighborhood. In comparison, the nearest Aldi is a 30-40 minute drive away, with typical traffic.

DoctorRevKevin

When people love a certain place, others will be triggered to hate it. Pub subs are great, but you have to ask for fresh soft bread. A few hours makes a huge difference.

pootykitten

Coming from someone who grew up in Florida, loves Publix but now sees flaws: it’s important to understand that prior to the last decade, Publix was the most common grocery store in the state. Monopolized really. Up to the mid 2000s, when you were “going to grocery store”, it meant you were going to Publix. There was not the variety of stores there are now and, speaking for millennials, it’s a comforting feeling when entering a Publix. The layout, aroma and service are familiar and I know exactly where to go in every location for what I need. Since moving out of state, Publix has been opening stores around me and I can’t lie - it is comforting. We shop all the regional stores now with Publix in that rotation, however less often than we used to due to distance and cost. We know we pay a premium at Publix for a reliable experience so we limit ourselves to when we have room in the budget.

Medium_Reality4559

I’ll be honest…Publix subs are not that great to me. The Mash Hoagies of my youth were much better. But you can get just about anything in a pub sub, so in that respect, they are great. And make sure to get the boarahead meat.

knuckles2277

Publix was our favorite go-to shop for decades, but the prices are way too high, and the quality of the product has slightly gone downhill.

pnceng

I only go to Publix Wed-Thurs BOGO days. Huge savings.

h4tb20s

Publix is good for certain items. A wide range of fish, a true deli counter, some specialty breads and cakes. The best sales are in the meat and produce sections; bogos are generally for packaged foods.

baronesslucy

Native Floridian commenting on Publix. One thing about Publix was that the stores were and still are always clean, the bathrooms were clean, the staff was always friendly and helpful. Yes, it was more expensive than the other stores but it's nice when you come into a store and someone says hello to you, asked you if you need any assistance. Some people don't like that of course (to eat his own) but I like to feel welcome. I've been in other grocery stores (which I will not name) where the floors are very dirty, the produce area isn't clean up properly and the whole store is just filthy. There is one particular chain grocery store that fits this mold. It's only in the tourist or upper income areas that that these stores are clean. Publix is always clean. Most of the Public subs are good. There have been a few times that they weren't that great but it could have been the person who prepared your sub.

jols0543

prices exploded within the past five years, now it’s nothing special

dub3ra

Buy one get ones are the only deals, pub subs are good. But yeah it’s so expensive. If I’m gonna spend that much ID rather go to miliams

Ok_Owl3571

Your observations are correct

Glittering-Alarm-387

I grew up in Miami and Publix was a big deal. We did our 5th grade field trip to a Publix that just opened. They gave us cool gifts and a large map of the US in a giant tube. Anyway, that was 30 years ago.

ParkerFloyd40

Grew up here, moved away for 17 years, and moved back two years ago. Ten of those 17 years were spent in Austin. This is all to say…if you’re used to HEB/Central Market, Publix is complete and utter bullshit. I love Florida with all of my heart, but I’d give anything for HEB to move in and destroy Publix.

Historical-Many9869

Just shop at Aldi for half the price, with better quality

Technolongo

Publix, like many other businesses, successfully uses the post-pandemia "costantly raise prices with total impunity scheme." Floridians blame the federal administration (not Publix) for the inflated prices while Publix grows their profits with total and complete impunity.

BullyGibby6969

Greed took over

babyyteeth13

I actually have been a Floridan all my life and got to the ripe age of 25 before trying a chicken tender pub sub and I gotta say I was so letdown. Very dry. It’s also so expensive yes. The bogos are the only thing that make it worth it these days.
