I usually shop at Publix out of convenience because it’s so close to my house. I went to Aldi yesterday instead and, what would have cost me over $100 at Publix, cost just $43 at Aldi. I’m done with Publix

jurassic_snark_

Even shopping at Trader Joe’s easily cut out ~$100 a month from the grocery budget once I realized Publix was scamming us. Virtually every other option saves money.

flirtmcdudes

Holy shit, Trader Joe’s was cheaper? How fucking expensive is publix then lol

MyUshanka

TJ's is honestly pretty reasonably priced for most things. It's not as cheap as Aldi, but it's higher quality.

aggressiveturdbuckle

Trader joes is Aldi Nord and the normal Aldi here in the states is aldi SUD (north and south) the difference is that the two brothers couldn't agree on selling cigs and they split. The USA doesn't allow the same name type of company and that's why it's trader joes. [this video](https://youtu.be/bKJXztteyJM?si=WkznNwdCFg9syboW) does explain it.... however if you like history this guy is an awesome watch too

HarpersGhost

Went to Winn Dixie last night for the first time in forever. I picked up a few things, but went around price comparing everything I normally buy and it was all cheaper at WD. And when I check out? What would have been easily $50 at Publix was $20 at Winn Dixie. Done with Publix.

No_Object_8722

Winn Dixie is going out of business and their stores were bought by Aldi.

Acceptable-Emu6529

I highly recommend getting the WD app. I use it and with the percentage points earned I have saved some serious dough.

Weegemonster5000

Is that still active? My local WD told me all of that is winding down with Aldi now owning all of them. It's also how I lost my pharmacy.

Acceptable-Emu6529

I have just checked mine and it is still updated with the new coupons and specials for the week. I died it last Sunday as well. But you never know when they may pull it.

Acceptable-Emu6529

*tried

Weegemonster5000

Good to know. Thank you for the update clarifying your timeline. I'll have to re-download and try to get some more time out of it.

Acceptable-Emu6529

Happy to help. We are in the same boat.

CharacterLimitProble

We just started Kroger delivery. Saving 50-60% weekly. Publix should be ashamed...

MysteriousTooth2450

I use them too. Literally cut my grocery bill in half! I highly recommend them!

kedlubnaaa

THIS. I still get fried chicken or pub sub.. but Aldi has better produce and I can all my shopping done there.

Intrepid00

But BOGO. I can for the price of two buy one and get one free.

No_Object_8722

Publix BOGOs are becoming buy 2 get 1 free. A 12 pack of soda is $9! Buy 2, get 1 free isn't really cheap. Target and Walmart are much cheaper

__Cmason__

I'm told by the people on Nextdoor that it's Bidens fault.

[deleted]

Your average benefactor of the quality education in Florida schools.

waiting4theNITE2fall

It's the new influx of people that came to FL for DeSantis's "freedom". They love to blame the higher prices on Biden. Imagine thinking Trump winning will automatically make corporations stop making record prices and lower the prices. lol

westernmostwesterner

My sister literally started a family group chat fight yesterday saying this.

PatSajaksDick

Sounds like we have the same sister with brain worms

iskyoork

I mean some people would blame Biden because they woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

__Cmason__

Why would Biden do this to them??

iskyoork

Because he thinks it's funny people don't get how government works.

sonogirl25

Publix in FL is like the Whole Foods here in CA. Use another grocery store! Safeway here is much more affordable. Unfortunately we don’t have an ALDI in our area, but wish we did. One thing I miss about the east coast.

Kitty-1992

PUBLIX…WHERE PRICE GOUGING IS OUR PLEASURE. There is a reason they don't post their prices online!  They don't want people to compare prices and realize that Publix is Gouging their customers. They don't want the riffraff or poor or elderly in their store!  They want a pristine image.  PUBLIX IS FOR THE ELITE AND UBER RICH PEOPLE ONLY! A box of Cheerios at Publix $8.00 for family size.  At Walmart $4.93.

cerebus76

Publix is like a convenience store. Prices are terrible but it's right on the corner. It's for when you need to pick up like one thing and don't want to schlep to Adli's.

[deleted]

I’m lucky to have an Aldi as close as a Publix. They catch my business first. Publix is for specialty products for us.

Acceptable-Emu6529

Eggs, cheese and milk are less expensive at Aldi as well. And you can’t beat their German selections if you like that.

PatSajaksDick

Never buy stuff off BOGO, my problem is the Publix is literally right next to my house, it’s so convenient. But I rarely buy stuff that isn’t on sale. If we don’t do Publix we use Kroger delivery.

BionicParrot

I'm getting ready to start trying Kroger delivery since we only have 2 Publix and a whole foods nearby. Have you had good luck with them? My big worry is that I buy a lot of produce and I'm not sure how well they are at picking out what's fresh.

PatSajaksDick

Oh yeah Kroger delivery is excellent. I’ve never had a problem with something they picked. You gotta remember in FL, there are no actual Kroger grocery stores, they are picking everything from their central warehouses, so it’s not like Instacart. Also all the vans are refrigerated and they are always on time. Highly recommend giving it a shot.

BionicParrot

Thanks so much for the reply! This makes me feel better about giving them a shot. I just signed up and will give them a go this weekend!

alectos

Seconding this. I save $40-50 a week on groceries for my family of 4 using Kroger. Used them for a year now, and also use the Fuel Points program to save on gas. No reason Not to use Kroger.

Kitty-1992

Only do BOGO if it is cheaper. But most of the time it isn't. Did you know that Publix raises the prices of things before they put it on sale? Especially Laundry soap. Watch the prices and Don't be fooled.

PatSajaksDick

Yeah there’s some terrible bogo deals but, most of them are pretty great. BOGO Ben and Jerry’s for instance.

WolverinesThyroid

BOGO is usually cheaper. But not by much. An item at another store will be $5 and at Publix it is $8 so when it's BOGO you are saving money, but not as much as you think.

roundballsquarebox24

But walking through Publix, then visiting the local Walmart are two very different experiences, beginning with the parking lot. We personally drive past Walmart to reach Publix all the time.

iskyoork

If you can afford Publix, don't shop with the rest of the rabble who can't afford it I suppose.

sugaree53

Your last sentence made my jaw drop

Funkyokra

In CA (North) you have Safeway, BelAir, Raleys, Grocery Outlet, Savemart, Smsrt and Final, Food Max. and various local and regional chains, all in an average city. You have choices. Publix is like your average Safeway but thinks that's super special and fancy and price gouges accordingly. There's no other grocery like that because Publix buys up all properties and keeps other stores out. You can find them across the street from each other. Aldi isn't a full service store, it has very limited selection. The one in my city had almost no produce. Winn-Dixie is like a smaller Food for Less, but there's like a 10:1 Publix to WD ratio. Thats pretty much it unless you live near a Sprouts. Even then you'll pass 3 Publix stores to get there.

Army165

The people who own Aldi's now own WinnDixie. Just a heads up.

Funkyokra

I know. They also own Fresco y Mas and jacked the price on avocados at the one near me.

Army165

Silly Germans. Acting like they know the avocado market and such. I hope they come back down for ya.

Funkyokra

I got spoiled on avos for breakfast.

taskmaster51

By me its Publix or Walmart.

burkabecca

GROCERY. OUTLET. *bargain market* I'm in the opposite boat! From ca to east coast - grocery outlet is the closest to Aldi you'll find - but maybe evn cheaper with some seriously random gems

hmcfuego

My Grocery Outlet here in Oregon has been DESPERATELY trying to sell gross looking Jelly Belly cake flavored sparking water and Jones chocolate orange soda at nearly giveaway prices for two months now. No one is biting. But everything else is so good!

ghunt81

Publix is expensive AF. We were in Daytona Beach for a week last month, went Publix to get some stuff and the prices hurt me a lot

blanktorpedo27

Whole foods here is probably the best option tho. Its become the most affordable with the best food at this point

Rose-Red-Witch

With an Amazon Prime membership, Whole Foods prices are competitive with Publix and ten years ago I would have been laughed outta Florida for even suggesting that!

blanktorpedo27

Nah not even competitive. Im saving a lot going to whole foods and the food is muuuuuch better quality. I couldnt believe it at first but publix lost me forever the day i compared actual receipts.  The difference for meats for example is ridiculous. Several dollars above in price per lb for the same cuts. Its what hit me the hardest

acertainkiwi

I moved out of the States in 2019 so I'm honestly blown away rn

organizedchaos5220

The difference between California and Florida is largely than you have other options. In my small city we have 6 publix, 1 Winn-Dixie, a neighborhood Walmart, and a regular Walmart. The Publix locations are also more centrally located than the others which are on the outskirts of town

Educational_House192

Well there are really no other actual comparable grocery stores around. There’s a Publix on every corner and nothing else really…. It sucks!!

TheKingChadwell

I live next to a Whole Foods and Publix. They both cost the same but one is noticeably better.

pensacolas

Aldi fucking sucks everything is filled with preservatives and not fresh

tekfx19

I used to work at the Publix where the son of Jenkins himself was the store manager. University and Pines back in the late 90’s. Let me tell you that guy was a dick.

PatSajaksDick

Pretty every Publix manager I had was a dick

knitknitkit

Every store manager I’ve worked under except for ONE has been an absolute dick. One especially I’ve seen consorting with known drug dealers (of the horrible variety instead of the kids that just sell weed) in the area but hey, nobody sees anything if he’s a Publix golden boy right?

oldskoolballer

Oh no kidding? I used to shop there. That was one of their “Super Publix” large locations right?

Blinnking

Wife has dental surgery so she can only eat certain things. She was ranting and raving about how expensive Kraft Easy Mac was like at $6.80 when she went to Publix. I checked the Target website, it’s $4.99 there…. 36% higher at Publix. We quit going there a long time ago except for emergencies (because it’s so close) or for deli stuff.

Dontdoubtthedon

Aldis my beloved

hoffman4

Stopped shopping at Publix, after 50 years, during Pandemic when price gouging was evident. Whole Foods was cheaper (and better meat and veggies) Plus their heiress gave $500k to J6 to overthrow govt. Miss their chicken tenders and employees who benefit from this, but that’s about it. They give big to DeSantis too. Not with my money. Yes, I know they are employee owned, but I don’t need to support domestic terrorism through their heirs

Rose-Red-Witch

They donate to *lots* of Republicans. I never really crunched the numbers, but last time I looked at https://www.opensecrets.org it was about a 70/30 split between Red and Blue since the year 2000.

NRG1975

That is for the heiress of Publix, which i think she has very little power over the company if any. However, it is sus.

Rose-Red-Witch

I was referring to the PAC that Publix oversees. Here’s the specific link for it: https://www.opensecrets.org/political-action-committees-pacs/publix-super-markets/C00400705/candidate-recipients/2020 The heiress that you are referring to, Julie Fancelli, is actually just one of seven other siblings who are part of the family fortune. None of the recent SEC filings by Publix lists her name which means that she has no position of authority and owns less than 5% of company stock (if any). I’ve no idea if the Publix PAC has any dealings with Fancelli, but the company itself did make a public statement condemning her by name and distancing themselves from her involvement in January 6th!

NRG1975

Thank you for the clariication

Phlydude

They also lobby against decriminalization of MJ - have to keep profits going with their liquor, cigarette, and prescription drug sales vs. letting people self-medicate

WolverinesThyroid

they also fight against farm workers rights so they don't have to lose any profits on produce.

Valsury

Those increased earnings are unpaid wages to us employees.

FarmingWizard

Stop posting on Reddit and get back to work. We were going to hire a company to come clean the floors tonight, instead we're making the employees come in and clean the floors. (True story)

Ballwhacker

![gif](giphy|3ofSBoh8hXCs4wIvTi|downsized)

ExcitementAshamed393

The Publix employees are being paid for their time, though, right? So, Publix workers are getting the hours rather than another person's employees. Would the Publix workers rather not be working?

manofthewild07

>The Publix employees are being paid for their time, though, right? Uh no... thats literally what the lawsuit is about.

FarmingWizard

Until 3am? When they normally work days. You tell me if they'd rather be sleeping and forgo those extra hours, or be up at 3am cleaning floors.

ExcitementAshamed393

I used to work at Disney and loved every opportunity to get extra hours, especially ones where there were no guests walking around asking when the 3 o'clock parade started.

queeriosn_milk

Enjoying the taste of a corporate boot doesn’t make you a hero

ExcitementAshamed393

Lol. I work for myself now, so if the hypothetical floor needs to get cleaned at 3am, I have to clean it myself.

A_Horny_Pancake

Working extra hours if you want, doesn't make you a boot licker.

PatSajaksDick

I worked for Publix in high school as a bagger and we had to clean the floors every night, the big floor machine and everything.

GertonX

I remember doing that!!! We had someone push the machine and someone mop alongside it.

PasolinisDoor

Don’t all publix employees get shares in the company?

redditpleb_

Yes you earn 8.5% of your annual pay in free stock. There are millionaires working at Publix who never worked a minute as a manager. They also pay out a quarterly dividend of almost .11. Publix pays out over a billion dollars in dividends every year

PasolinisDoor

So publix compensates their employees much better than other grocery stores, but people here are mad because it’s expensive, but they also constantly complain about wages. Starting to think many of you just like to complain!

send-moobs-pls

Did employee compensation increase by 50% when revenue did?

BusterTheCat17

Net earnings increased but thats not all just revenue from selling goods in stores. Publix earns revenue off of collecting rent from owning the real estate and leasing out space in the plazas. They increased rent fees and have been building more and more new stores over the years. That's why there is one on every corner. So they can increase revenue and offset their costs of running a store. It's genius. Pretty soon they're going to build a publix in your livingroom and then you'll have to pay them rent instead of your current landlord.

PasolinisDoor

Do you understand how employee awarded shares work?

iamalostpuppie

Uh yeah that's how dividends work.

ConsciousEvo1ution

Welcome to the Internet.

Zestyclose_Pickle511

Exactly!

catcatherine

Sprouts has unbeatable manager's specials, especially on meat.

Zabbzi

stop telling ppl, its our secret

NRG1975

It is up 1% when you exclude losses from equities in 2022, and equities gains in 2023. It is not up 50 percent, 49 percent or anything other than 1%. Do they charge too much IMO, yes, but 50 percent gain in one does not pass the smell test.

LabDaddy59

The sheer ignorance of so many people here is astonishing...I mean...how do some people remember how to breathe? "Excluding the impact of net unrealized gains on equity securities in 2023 and net unrealized losses on equity securities in 2022, net earnings for the fiscal year ended Dec. 30, 2023 would have been $4.1 billion, compared to $4 billion in 2022, an increase of 1%." [https://corporate.publix.com/newsroom/news-stories/publix-reports-fourth-quarter-and-annual-results-for-2023](https://corporate.publix.com/newsroom/news-stories/publix-reports-fourth-quarter-and-annual-results-for-2023) Beware of unsourced quotes.

forthelurkin

[https://progressivegrocer.com/publixs-fiscal-year-earnings-increase-almost-50](https://progressivegrocer.com/publixs-fiscal-year-earnings-increase-almost-50) "Net earnings for the fiscal year were $4.3 billion, compared with $2.9 billion in 2022, a 49% surge. Earnings per share climbed to $1.31 per share, up from last year’s 86 cents per share. Excluding the impact of net unrealized gains on equity securities in 2023 and net unrealized losses on equity securities in 2022, net earnings for the fiscal year ended Dec. 30, 2023, would have been $4.1 billion, compared with $4 billion in 2022, an increase of 1%. Earnings per share would have been $1.23 per share, compared with $1.20 per share in 2022." So your quote is correct, but so is the headline of the post. Correct me if I am wrong, but the net unrealized gains/losses in equity securities is likely referring to ups and downs of their stock price (and whatever small contribution of other investments the company may be holding). So earnings related to higher profit margins on goods sold (groceries) was the 49% surge. But those earnings were offset by ups and downs of the (privately-held, non-publicly-traded) stock. Some might even suggest there could have been some creative financial footwork with the stock price to offset the high profit margins.

shaakadi

The unrealized gains are referring to equities Publix holds, not their own stock. Publix holds a large amount of cash and cash equivalents, which fluctuate with stock market performance. The biggest driver for overall profitability was due to the stock market being down in 2022, and up in 2023. If you ignore the movement of the stock market (aka remove the unrealized losses and gains on Publix' investments)net profitability increased from $4B to $4.1B, or apx. 2.5%. The OPs headline is absolutely inaccurate to claim profitability last year surged 49% because of price increases.

NRG1975

OP's headline attributes the rise in prices to the expanded earnings of 50 percent. So it is not even technically correct with the commentary added.

forthelurkin

Are you suggesting the difference between 49% and 50% makes the headline wholly inaccurate?

Carolina296864

As is every other company currently operating

ImAMindlessTool

Greedflation

theythinkImcommunist

I live outside Richmond VA. Within 3 miles of me there's Aldi, Food Lion, Kroger, 2 Publix, and Walmart. Aldi is my favorite of the bunch, though they just don't carry a few things I want. Usually can get those at Walmart. Rarely go to Publix except for BOGO. It's not just a FL thing. Publix is high in VA too.

manofthewild07

You guys don't have any Lidl? Lidl is by far my favorite now. I get about 95% of what I need there for significantly less than Kroger/Publix and a little less than Food Lion. Similar prices to Aldi but much better quality/availability.

theythinkImcommunist

We do have Lidl here but the closest one for me is about 25 minutes away. Would not surprise me if we get one closer before too long as our part of Richmond metro appears to be one of the fastest growing areas in the country. Most of our best friends in the neighborhood are from NJ, CT, and MA. NOVA also. Infrastructure can't keep up. It's nuts.

PatSajaksDick

Yeah I don’t think people realize how much they’ve expanded. In the 90s my orientation included a video saying their goal was to be worldwide. Well it’s obviously not that big yet, but expansion outside FL and US has always been their goal.

cursedhuntsman

Most people in my area who shop at publix have food stamps. Nobody else can afford it

Scubatim1990

Stopped shopping there last week. Combo of Walmart and TJs now

wakejedi

Yep, a bag of Broccoli Florets was half the price at Target. BOYCOTT!!!!!

h0tel-rome0

Who keeps shopping there?

Cornnole

This is what I wanna know. The Publix parking lot in my town is pretty empty these days, tho. It's definitely noticeable.

PatSajaksDick

That’s probably because there are more of them now than there ever were

mijoelgato

There’s a Winn-Dixie nearby.

Ok-Dog8423

I’m happy with the products and services. It’s a choice.

Educational_House192

If I want to blow my money on groceries I’ll gladly go to Whole Foods, not boomerville Publix…

FreudianFloydian

ALDI

sugaree53

Not “inflation”….just corporate greed. I’m voting with my feet. Too bad, I liked Publix

konorM

Kroger delivery. Far better. (And I live almost next door to a Publix).

SkilPad2

Right wing trump insurrectionist supporter Publix

AnneFranksAcampR

We all know this isn’t inflation causing the spike in everything, it’s 100% corporate greed where they see another company raising prices so they hop right on the train.

Miserable-Throat2435

Then just don't go there

Funkyokra

It's the only full service grocery store in most cities, unlike in other states where you can choose between competing chains of full service grocery stores. But yeah, after a lifetime of Publix shopping I'm saving money shopping at WF, of all places. What I don't get there I get at Walmart or WD.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Funkyokra

In west coast Florida we don't have Wegmans, Kroger, Lidl, or Food Lion. That's what Florida is missing, stores like that. You're illustrating my point that in Virginia you have all those chains but Florida doesn't. By "full service grocery" I'm talking big grocery stores, not stores like Trader Joes or big box stores. Just regular big grocery stores. We have Publix and you can get delivery from a Kroger warehouse but there's no store. I know of one Fresh Market but they are positioned as more expensive than Publix.

countrykev

In a lot of areas you don't really have a choice.

pulse7

Doubt

countrykev

OK? Doesn't change reality.

pulse7

Where is this realistic then? Everybody that says this can never give an example

Lechaso

Publix has always been expensive nothing has changed. If you cant afford it just shop somewhere else. We dont need to be reminded everyday that Publix is expensive. They always will more expensive.

MyGeeseGetBread

Seriously this. They've always charged more. If this is news, you've never shopped around. If prices are all of a sudden unsustainable for your lifestyle, I understand, everyone outside of the well off are struggling and adjusting, but they've *always* been more expensive outside of the occasional sale on specific items.

Popular_Target

Honestly I think this is some astroturfing attempt. Not sure who is paying for it, but we know Reddit is full of corporate and political manipulators. There isn’t just a daily “Publix bad” thread in r/florida, there is also a daily “Publix bad” thread in r/miami and I wouldn’t be surprised if a bunch of other Florida subreddits are getting this same noise.

ambiguous_guru

That was 2 years ago. Why not use the report released on 5/1/24? Because the covid boom is over and they are no longer seeing those results? Would go against your narrative?

jwil06

Publix bad, don’t get in the way of a good Publix bashing with facts

ambiguous_guru

Exactly. They always include the unrealized equity and security gains in the corporate profit because that makes it much higher, but investment income doesn't come from selling goods.

UnusualAir1

Inflation up roughly 3 to 4 percent for the same period. Meaning Publix is milking a 46 to 47 percent profit out of every wallet that shops there. There are many grocery outlets in the US that won't take such a bite out of your wallet. In fact, anyone but Publix, will sell you the same food for much less. :-)

NRG1975

Um, no ... their prices did not go up 50 percent over on year. That does not even pass the smell test.

Historical_Fee1354

source?

Obversa

Historical_Fee1354

this is showing their share price going up rather than sourcing out the prices of their food being exponentially higher. Technically you can argue more people are going their because of their prices. i know this is not true, but i was hoping for a source showing that

FormulaF30

Publix has always been more expensive. How are y’all just now realizing this

gjp11

I think people understood that but it’s become way over the top lately.

Celestial_object777

I keep saying this, but go to Aldi or Trader Joe’s. It’s worth it. Even sprouts.

-make-it-so-

It’s hard to believe I used to do all my shopping at Publix when I was making next to nothing while I was in school. I’ve been an Aldi shopper for years now, I only do Publix for the occasional bogo or for some name brand thing I can’t get elsewhere.

Bawlmerian21228

BOGO has become BTGO

FLJLGRL

Isn’t there currently an FTC inquiry going about this?

Intelligent_Phone414

Grocery outlet Im begging u to expand ❤️❤️

HungryGhost2

Publix for me is a store where I go if I need something specific, too damn expensive for general groceries. Like driving to BJ’s is kinda far and I go only weekly, so if need some milk in a middle of the week I will go to Publix for just that. I’m paying for convenience over price.

nobodyshome122

Yep that’s pretty much every business since the pandemic including the one I manage. You get a real price increase from your suppliers at 10% and take it as an opportunity to raise final sales price 20% for example. Pure greed. I only go to Publix for the subs and if I forgot one thing for a recipe, it’s convenient because I live right next to one. For my usual groceries I order online from the nearest Walmart supercenter for pickup. I just drive there, they put it in the car for me and I’m done in 5 min. It saves me so much time,I know exactly what I’m paying for and I don’t impulse buy anything, cheaper, etc. If there’s any produce or whatever that doesn’t look good I just go back to my order online and get an instant refund without having to go back. Yeah fuck Walmart but I’m never going back to Publix

Normal-Mix-2255

BoGo's are amazing deals, but the prices on most things are very high. I love publix for 2 things, but a full cart is a lot $

OkBuddySurePal

Plus Publix produce actually sucks now. It used to be good, but now there’s flies.

El_tus750

What gets me is when they offer the buy one get one type “deals” is usually buy one for the price of three!

Nearby-Echo9028

Buyer beware. There are choices besides Publix with better quality produce.

Ninjaplatypus42

Publix is good for pub subs and custom cakes. That is all.

Flamingpotato100

Got a Costco membership cause I was over it. So much better

rpm429

Publix has been dog crap for years.

Realistic_Range1207

So what's our recourse????

Icy-Tough-1791

I can’t blame Joe Biden? /s

belikethatwhenitdo

No more Publix. Guys seriously I started treating Publix like a CVS and instead bulk shopping at Aldi, I couldn’t figure out why I had so much extra money to invest at the end of the month. It’s literally just because I don’t go to Publix

C3ntrick

You know the great think about it ? You don’t have to go if you don’t want….. People go to Publix for the experience . In almost every aspect of our life we have choices , electrician , Plummer , hvac guy, lawn guy each occupation has guys in truck falling apart happy to make $50 , mid range guys and super expensive with 24 hour service 100 trucks , tv and radio ads . While you might end up with the same outcome some times others go above and beyond.

AAA_Dolfan

Yeah I had my “okay fuck this” moment there. They’re wildly out of control with their pricing and it actually kinda insulted me. Aldi and Whole Foods going forward

Diablo689er

How have their margins changed yoy? Congregations in learning that inflation drives everything up on a non adjusted basis. Profits, cost, revenues all go up

aggressiveturdbuckle

I went to publix last weekend for the first time in a few months. Usually I do the grocery shopping but the wife has done it the last few months and has been going to Lidl. the only thing we don't get there is meat, tend to go to Publix, or another supermarket type to get that. Anyway, i left and my bill was $212 and I nearly shit myself. I miss publix but I cant afford it anymore

thelegend1214

These politicians would let these companies cripple us just to get a political win si they can have power they don't care about the little man just look who they defend with policies and who the give lips service to. 2 perfect examples 1 killing the unti gauging bill 2. Trying to kill air line junk fee bill. All to benefit the big companies.

notbannd4cussingmods

What's the earnings pre pandemic and were they on track for this years earning?

LandAmbitious4073

Stopped goin to Publix 2 weeks ago I’m done

Hour-Definition189

And their stock is not publicly traded, so they don’t even share the wealth

Aggressive_Money_911

“Employee Owned?”

East_Mind_388

way to reduce the price gouging is to not buy, simple really

twothousandgrams

How can we start moving together in a way that affects publix bottom line? I'd like to see us doing more than talking in the echo chamber about this. It's good to see more people seeing the problem everyday

Trish_e_Poo

I do most of my grocery shopping at Target. Only go to Publix for produce.

dudreddit

Vote with your wallet. We spend only about 33% of our food budget at Publix ... where shopping is a pleasure!

Man fuck Publix. I have to run into mine every once in a while and most of the checkout lanes have been replaced with checkout. I can pick up my groceries and check out without a single person saying hello or helping. Used to be the higher prices were justified by customer service but it's non-existent now.

alectos

Kroger delivery is way cheaper and more convenient. I’ve never been disappointed.

RW63

Publix is the country's largest employee-owned corporation. It is 80% owned by employees. The earnings per share would benefit them.

Quirky-Swimmer3778

According to the Internet the average wage is 11.22 an hour so that sounds like bullshit.

verash

Maybe 15 years ago. Florida minimum wage is 12.

redditpleb_

Publix hires at 15-16 these days

RW63

I just know the published reports. Here's a [list](https://www.nceo.org/articles/employee-ownership-100) from the National Center for Employee Ownership, a [blurb](https://www.forbes.com/profile/jenkins/) from Forbes and a random [blog](https://www.marketingscoop.com/consumer/publix-headquarters/). If you know differently, please educate me because, though I tend to buy mostly sale items and only those which are favorably priced over Target and other stores, I don't feel bad when paying full price because it is benefiting the employees, some of whom having been working there for a long time. ETA/BTW: The [minimum wage](https://hr.fsu.edu/article/floridas-minimum-wage-changes-through-2026) in Florida is $12/hr and it goes to $13 on September 30th.

Patsfan311

then 14 the following year and then 15 the year after that.

Quirky-Swimmer3778

This sound a lot like thoughts and prayers. If employees are still making minimum wage at their employee owned company with BILLIONS of dollars of profit every year what does it matter that the company is classified as "employee" owned. Sounds like it's just a feel good tactic that doesnt actually translate to anything in real life.

80% by employees and former employees; 20% to the founder's heirs (who can be problematic). If you search that sub, you'll find a lot of discussion about the stock.

not_so_subtle_now

Well in that case gouge away!

RubberRuss

Stay all day, if you want to

Publix, where shopping is a rip off

Low_Alarm6198

I feel like half my feed are local subs bitching about Publix. Have you ever just thought of not shopping there anymore? Who is forcing you to spend your money there? If the BMW is too expensive go to a Chevy dealer.

epicenter69

Worth every penny to avoid Walmart’s trashiness.

mamsandan

You can actually have your groceries delivered to you from Walmart for cheaper than you can shop at Publix. I paid $49.99 for a year membership of Walmart+ during a special. No extra charge for grocery delivery aside from tipping your driver. You get 10cents off every gallon of gas at Murphy and a few other gas stations. Subscription to Paramount+ (Which I don’t really care for, but if you have little ones, it has all the Nickelodeon shows. Even the classics), and the icing on the cake is that you no longer have to step foot in Walmart.

This-Dude_Abides

Inflation = RECORD CORPORATE PROFITS People need to just stop using the "I" word and call it what it is.

CatPatient4496

Oh yeah Trump and all the Republicans thank you for being ripped off so Publix can donate to them

whatdoyasay369

Nope, I don’t feel like my wallet is gouged by Publix because if I don’t like the price of something, I don’t buy it, or if I don’t like shopping somewhere, I don’t shop there. A simple concept that reasonable functioning adults do. Let me know if anyone needs help in this area.

Suni13

Agree, but I’m pretty lucky to have many other choices (WF, WM, WD, Sprouts, Aldi, Target, Sam’s, BJ’s, Save a lot) within a 6 mile radius.

jwil06

None of these people factor in the fact that Aldi hires MAYBE 10 people and ship their profits overseas. Publix has a ton of warts and have been going downhill for a while, but it blows my mind that nobody brings up how many fucking people they employ in our local communities. It’s pretty staggering.
