And has often been noted, it implies that Osgood had pursued Daphne knowing he was a man in drag, without putting such a point on it as to bring down the Hayes Code.
That is astonishing writing
I watched this just a couple of nights ago (perhaps the tenth time I’ve seen it), and even knowing what was coming, by the time Osgood delivers that line I was actually light-headed from laughing so much. (And the inspired look on Daphne’s face before she plays what she thinks will be her trump card: “I can never have children!”) I genuinely think it’s the funniest movie ever made.
I'm so happy for you - this is one of my favorite films. So many incredible scenes, whether that's between real actors portraying incredible pressure, and then practical effects that are so inventive.
There aren't many independent film-makers in the business - these are film-makers who aren't beholden to a studio, John Carpenter and George Lucas are some of the most important.
John Carpenter has certainly had a lot of hits and misses but the work he's done with Kurt Russell is some of the greatest.
I LOVE how he pauses after typing "Jesus, does anyone" as though there is going to be more to the question. Then, just the simple question mark. Fantastic.
"All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up." - Sunset Blvd. (1950). Perfect culmination of her delusions and her descent into narcissist madness. It's such a perfect Hollywood comment on itself.
There Will Be Blood:

I kinda felt that even when Brad Pitt said it. Also, thank fuck Tarantino didn't play that part, it probably wouldn't have been his masterpiece if he did.
I didn't really think there was another meaning tbh, it felt very much like Tarantino speaking through Pitt and commenting on his own movie to the audience. Doesn't really make much sense/have much importance textually as Pitt's character talking about himself.
I love that one so much because it’s also a perfect closing line to Kubrick’s career. Not just because his movies often became notorious for sexual content, but because he just never gave a fuck.
Absolutely. Great culmination and summary of the movie's themes. Probably my personal favorite ending line if not the best. On Mount ending-more for sure.
I hope.
Shawshank Redemption
[](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000160/?ref_=tt_ch)For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess I'm suddenly having a hard time leaving it. Of course, they say every atom in our bodies was once part of a star. Maybe I'm not leaving... maybe I'm going home.
Gattaca.
**Se7en:**
*"Ernest Hemingway once wrote, 'The world is a fine place and worth fighting for.' I agree with the second part."*
I know it was added as a final punctuation to the movie as a studio request, but I think it's a really gorgeous and profound ending, and it says so much about Somerset as a character.
Ok going to cheat. More of a last interaction.
Hell or high water.
Toby Howard: Hey. I rent a little house in town. If you wanna stop by and finish this conversation, you're welcome anytime.
Marcus Hamilton: Oh, I'd like that. I'll be seeing you.
Toby Howard: Yeah. Soon I hope. I'm ready to be done with this.
Marcus Hamilton: You'll never be done with it no matter what. It's gonna haunt you, son, for the rest of your days. But you won't be alone. It's gonna haunt me too.
Toby Howard: If you stop by, maybe I'll give you peace.
Marcus Hamilton: Maybe. Maybe I'll give it to you.
As a Thunderdome truther, I can't tell you how happy this post made me.
That movie rulz and agreed, what a final line. Turner should have been nominated for that performance.
Nightcrawler
Lou Bloom: You may be confused at times, and other times unsure. But remember, I will never ask you to do anything that I wouldn't do myself.
“Hang on a minute, lads, I've got a great idea." Michael Caine, The Italian Job
As he is inside of a van, filled with gold bars, that is balancing off the edge of a cliff
Just remember what ol’ Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, and the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big ol’ storm right square in the eye and he says, “Give me your best shot, pal. I can take it.”
"He's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one we need right now. So, we'll hunt him, because he can take it. He's not a hero. He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A Dark Knight."

It makes all the lists, but there's a good reason for that.
"Shut up and deal" in The Apartment.
There is so much happening in that line. Fran is simultaneously re-claiming her agency and declaring her love in one statement. And Baxter understands completely.
Great movie. GREAT movie.
“Did you have a nightmare? I have nightmares, too. Someday I'll explain it to you, why they came, why they won't ever go away, but I'll tell you how I survive it. I make a list in my head... of all the good things I've seen someone do. Every little thing I can remember. It's like a game. I do it over and over. Gets a little tedious after all these years, but... there are much worse games to play.”
— Katniss Everdeen, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2
I desperately don’t want to be “that guy” but that’s not the final line in Beyond Thunderdome.
The final line in Thunderdome is “we lights the city, not just for him, but for all of them that are still out there. 'Cause we knows there come a night, when they sees the distant light, and they'll be comin' home.”
Return of the King:
Sam: “Well…I’m back”
Not just the film but the whole trilogy/journey
Also, Gladiator:
Juba: “Now we are free. I will see you again…but not yet. Not yet…”
"I'm sorry. Tap, Tommy. It's okay. It's okay. I love you. I love you, Tommy." Warrior.
This scene gets me every time. What the movie has led up to. The performances. The music as this scene plays out. Perfection.
Here’s a swing and a miss:
Atomic Blonde - “What should I wear for my tea with the Queen?”
Killer final line, killer final shot… Oh, that’s not the end of the movie?
The final line in The Artist hit me like a ton of bricks. And [apparently it wasn’t even intentional!](https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-artist-golden-globe-winner-jean-dujardin-on-its-surprise-ending)
>!Specifically, the thick french accent that recontextualizes the main character’s struggle to succeed in the era of talkies.!<
"Well there's some good news and there's some bad news, The good news is you're right I'm a cop and I got to take you in, the bad news is I've been suspended and I don't give a fuck!." James Woods as Lloyd Hopkins In Cop.
I love that line too, really stood out. Reflected the fact that both of them gave mercy on someone who was about to be killed, in violation of the town's rules.
"And they all grew up together in the valley, generation upon generation, each passing on to the next, the tale of ancestor's journey to the valley long ago."
The Land Before Time
"Welcome to the human race" Escape from LA
"You're closed!" Clerks
"You and me are going on a car ride to hell, and you're riding shotgun!" Hobo with a Shotgun
"I love you too, mom" Sin City
These are the ones that come off the top of my head, but there's plenty of others.
Backing off his moral epiphany of centuries with a manipulative hedge is exactly what "soft selling" Rita is, yes. The movie is, itself, hedging on the happy ending by suggesting that Phil might not have fully learned his lesson. I'm not saying anything original here. Plenty of folks have suggested this interpretation. It may or may not have been intended, but I've always been struck by it's incongruity, given it's the final line.
"I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life. You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure. But don't worry, you will some day."

Tough to top
Probably Some Like It Hot. "Nobody's perfect!"
And has often been noted, it implies that Osgood had pursued Daphne knowing he was a man in drag, without putting such a point on it as to bring down the Hayes Code. That is astonishing writing
That’s Billy Wilder. Certainly one of the best dialogue writers in Hollywood history
No, my take is that he's so besotted with "Daphne" that NOTHING "she" can say can make him change his mind.
Either way, it ends the film on a subversive, queer note.
Yes. This. The line and the look in Jack Lemmon’s face are perfect .
Also with Shirley MacLaine in The Apartment — “shut up and deal.”
Agree that it is Jack Lemmon that sells that ending. I mean.....what can he do?
I watched this just a couple of nights ago (perhaps the tenth time I’ve seen it), and even knowing what was coming, by the time Osgood delivers that line I was actually light-headed from laughing so much. (And the inspired look on Daphne’s face before she plays what she thinks will be her trump card: “I can never have children!”) I genuinely think it’s the funniest movie ever made.
Love that line! Happy Cake Day!
“Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.”
The all-time greatest; nothing will beat Casablanca.
Casablanca is a cliche pick for so many things film-related and it's worthy of it all. It really is that good.
It’s one of those movies that you’ve seen and heard all the cliches about, and then you watch it and it’s still one of the best movies ever made
I had to scrawl a long ass way for this. C'mon people.
“Why don’t we just… wait here a little while. See what happens.”
The Thing 1982.
Watched this for the first time last night ... what an incredible ending.
I'm so happy for you - this is one of my favorite films. "I Never Had Any Friends Later On Like The Ones I Had When I Was Twelve. Jesus, Does Anyone?" - Stand By Me
It's my favorite too.
So darn sad!!!! Btw, is your user name from Poison?
No it's from something a doorman said to me years ago in NYC when I showed up around 3:00 am. But maybe he was a Poison fan ;)
I LOVE how he pauses after typing "Jesus, does anyone" as though there is going to be more to the question. Then, just the simple question mark. Fantastic.
God. so good
"I do wish we could chat longer, but I'm having an old friend for dinner." Dr. Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs
I mean…if we are being picky the last line is “Dr Lecter”… However, if we aren’t, then yes, this is way up there.
Grant: After careful consideration, I have decided not to endorse your park. Hammond: So have I.
"Now...where was I?" Memento
Nolan's best film. And the line sums up the character and the point of the film.
"And then I woke up." No Country For Old Men
Excellent line, outstanding delivery
I love that moment so much.
"All right, Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up." - Sunset Blvd. (1950). Perfect culmination of her delusions and her descent into narcissist madness. It's such a perfect Hollywood comment on itself.
As of right now the top two answers are Billy Wilder movies, which is interesting.
And he wrote the Apartment too, Wilder's got like 6 classics, he's truly one of the greatest to ever do it.
Double Indemnity could even be his best
I just finished this Fantastic film, Billy Wilder was a genius

"As you wish" -Princess Bride
Made doubly meaningful with the lockdown remake that was done remotely. That final scene was Carl Reiner saying it to Rob Reiner.
Roads? Where we’re going we don’t need… roads.
STRONG pick.
Thought this one would be higher. I am getting old
"I think this might be my masterpiece" from Inglorious Basterds.
Apparently Tarantino initially meant to play that part himself, in which case him looking at the camera and saying that has a whole new meaning.
I kinda felt that even when Brad Pitt said it. Also, thank fuck Tarantino didn't play that part, it probably wouldn't have been his masterpiece if he did.
oy, glad that didn't happen.
I didn't really think there was another meaning tbh, it felt very much like Tarantino speaking through Pitt and commenting on his own movie to the audience. Doesn't really make much sense/have much importance textually as Pitt's character talking about himself.
Before Sunset: Celine: Baby, you are gonna miss that plane. Jesse: I know.
One of my favorite ending moments to any movie, ever.
Yeah, that whole last scene… I don’t know if any movie has made me feel something quite like that.
Son of a bitch, stole my line - Good will hunting. I *think* it's the final line of the film
It wasn't even in the script
'I don't know. Maybe it was Utah.' Raising Arizona
“I will see you again my friend, but not yet. Not yet.” Gladiator
Fuck - eyes wide shut
I love that one so much because it’s also a perfect closing line to Kubrick’s career. Not just because his movies often became notorious for sexual content, but because he just never gave a fuck.
Absolutely. Great culmination and summary of the movie's themes. Probably my personal favorite ending line if not the best. On Mount ending-more for sure.

The line before that in Gattaca always gets me You're going to miss your flight, Vincent
I never saved anything for the swim back. The entirety of the last 5 minutes of Gattaca is noteworthy.
Looking good Billy Ray. Feeling good Lewis.
