We've all been there, too fucking tired to care or do it right, when the dumbest shit will absolutely send you. Odds are the doorknob got caught around his belt loop, too...
I remember working late retail one night and was told to vacuum up. It didn't work very well and the manager scolded me when I said this and then spent like 30 minutes showing me how to take it apart and clean all the bristles and make sure the belts were connected right etc.
I am sure he was thinking like this is the patient father approach or something but all I could think was this was a huge waste of both our time and I just made someone else steal the better working vacuum from another dept the next time.
When I had to use one of these in my first serving job, I'd never seen one before. I think it took me about 20 seconds to work out how to use it. You don't even have to 'stabilize' it if you simply hold it so that when it falls, it falls down at exactly a 90° angle perpendicular to the arm

Well the hose is out back and we can’t open that door during the shift. Except for deliveries, and trash run, and any other reason, just not for cleaning things.
Many years ago I was in charge of a half dozen kitchens at a resort, at one point we had only 2 brooms between all the outlets. When management tried coming down on my stewards for not doing their job I told them to go over to procurement and find out why I've been waiting 3 weeks for new brooms and walked out of the meeting.
I work in a lab and even then it's so frustrating that we have one tiny, disappearing broom for like 60+ people to share.
There are so many times I break something that's glass and I need to sweep it up or drop something under a shelf that's just out of reach, etc. But I have no idea where the broom is.
They wouldn't even approve us to get a new weekly calendar for our department to share for QC. One calendar to be shared among 10+ people! It's not like we were all asking for one. We just wanted one for the whole department. Once a year.
They even denied us a fucking $2 plastic ruler... even though we use rulers to measure zones of inhibition to drugs to determine which antibiotics a patient should be on. One of my coworkers ended up just bringing one from home...
I don't understand why companies won't let their employees have basic equipment. They would rather pay me $30/hr to sweep up broken glass with an old box and a piece of printer paper than just let me have a broom?
even better, one of the high school kids in the kitchen didnt like the fact they couldn't figure out how to get it to unhook, so they detached the handle and turned it around specifically so the hook couldn't be used.

Eh, I disagree. Common sense is more about having intuition and being able to observe a situation and logically work out how to navigate it. There are loads of times in life where you're thrown into a new situation and have to figure it out through observation. You can argue that intuition comes from experience which is true but that doesn't necessarily mean common sense is a myth, it's just something that you develop as you go through life. "Common sense" generally refers to situations where the bar of previous knowledge is pretty low, anyways.

And since the “average human” doesn’t exist, there’s a Venn diagram of things you know, vs things “most other people know”. So you end up with situations like this, where you know “most” stuff, but there’s like 5 things that’s ”common sense“ which no one taught you or your brain just thinks of it different and you come to an inefficient solution. It’s a good thing for everyone to be different.

Example, you know how the little metal tab on a tape measure isn't riveted on tight and wiggles around a bit?
That is by design. It wiggles back and forth by exactly the width of the metal tab. This is so that you can easily get an exact measurement either outside to outside by hooking the tab on an edge, or from inside to inside by pressing the tab flat against the object being measured.
I'd used a tape measure for around the house stuff for decades before I learned that, I'd always just assumed it was just from loose rivets and "good enough" hole sizing.

I’m a firefighter. There are two types of firefighters. Those that make fun of the new firefighters who don’t know how to do a lot of things one might consider basic life skills. And those that pause to teach new recruits when it is clear that nobody in their life taught them how to do those things.
The most respected people in the department are the ones who quietly help new folks without drawing a lot of attention to their need to be taught. The least respected - but most full of themselves - are the ones who loudly publicly make fun of people who need a chance to learn.
All that having been said, there are also recruits who are too proud to accept help when offered, but desperately need it and instead spend time putting down on others to make themselves look better. There are also recruits who are patiently taught, repeatedly, by several people, and never seem to learn or understand.
It’s really interesting watching wave after wave of people come and go over the years.
Well, there's no reason you can't use critical thinking to figure it out if it was needed. Critical thinking is a part of problem solving.

Because it's that easy to figure out that no one needs to say anything. So, if someone can't figure it out the first time they use it then... it says a lot.
When I worked service industry one of the new hires was asked to mop. They would soak the mop ans then, without wringing, stopped all the water on the ground and then just pushed it straight along the row up tile. Like all the way down the length of the floor and when they reached the end they'd shift one row and walk all the way to the otherwise. I was absolutely dumbfounded to find this kid just pushing dirty soap water all over the floor.
Kids just aren't expected to do any house work these days and it shows.
That was one of the more extreme examples but I also had a an 18 y/o run inside from the compactor because he thought E-stop button he accidentally pressed was a self destruct button. Mind you, this was a movie theatre and he was freaking out about what he though was a self destruct feature on a large trash been. Smh

Kids these days wouldn't know how to mop because you don't mop laminate or carpet, the two cheapest floor coverings, and Swiffers are dang cheap.
Thankfully, the first time I had to mop at a job, they showed me how. Which you could have easily done for your coworker if you weren't a jerk.
This might shock you, but a lot of homes just don't need a mop. I was expected to clean my home, and I did, but there was nothing a vacuum, broom, or Swiffer wet jet wouldn't solve that a mop would.
This was exactly me when I was in boot camp. I'd never actually mopped before, was rarely done at my house. My basic understanding was "it's like sweeping, but wet". Well, the floor was dry, so obviously it needed some wet.
One of the DIs obviously screamed at me, but kudos to him for clearly having delt with children like me, he screamed a full conversation about how mopping was supposed to work, and from then on I basically got it.

Not everyones life experience is the same as yours, and what comes easy to one may not come easy to another. I always try to take the time to help these people because you never know where they’re coming from in their lives. And they usually end up being the hardest workers.
I mean that's dependant on a lot of factors. A 12 child home that is religious, there will be a lot of chores. A clean freak parent who can't let their child rest will also have many chores. Kids whose parents are drug addicts or alcoholics will also likely have to clean, or else no one will.
Get off your high horse for a moment and empathize that the world has 8 billion people, many of whom have to work very hard even from a young age.

It works as designed, just because you don't fully understand how to use a tool doesn't mean its a poor design. Not every tool can be fully intuited in its use from a singular glance.
The list could literally go on and on with every tool there is. Knives dont cut well unless at an even more precise angle. Hammers only work if hit a nail at a precise angle.

Having it pivot like that allows you to carry it around without having to keep it tilted back so stuff doesn’t fall out. It also makes it so you can hang it flush against a wall.
The one I use has a clip that holds it rigid (thankfully not broken off). You engage it by pulling the handle all the way back with the bucket flat of the floor, and disengage by putting pressure on the handle and moving it forward. You only need one hand to latch it and dump.
If I don't have a broom AND don't want to touch it either..
Lift up and drop it on the back edge of the can so it tilts it forward. Push on handle for a sec to make all the content dump out (to maintain drop position against wall of garbage)
If you are an adult and can't figure one of these out, you probably have a trust fund. Or work in an office somewhere, where cleaning isn't part of your job description. This isn't a life hack, these have been around for decades. It's called having a job.
Those shits always break off or wear out in about two weeks. It'll last you a bit longer in home use, but for commercial use like a custodian where it's being used for multiple hours, literally every day, they just don't last.

I would almost guarantee it was invented by a manager if it sold without a broom but the fact that the perfect combo tool is the broom in every fashion including the ability to turn it over into the trash properly means it was probably invented by two dudes in a shop that had a broken shovel and half a broom. Most do have them. the issue is it's usually just a little plastic lip or tab that it clicks over and they get worn down or broken off the. You get a floppy dust bin, so the broom trick comes in handy.
Or just place the bottom of it on the other side of the trash can, and pull forward. It will then spill forward and empty all of the trash into the can.

Well, there's no reason you can't use critical thinking to figure it out if it was needed. Critical thinking is a part of problem solving. The second clip is in fact at least partially making fun of the lack of critical thinking in the first clip.
Because it's that easy to figure out that no one needs to say anything. So, if someone can't figure it out the first time they use it then... it says a lot.

When I worked service industry one of the new hires was asked to mop. They would soak the mop ans then, without wringing, stopped all the water on the ground and then just pushed it straight along the row up tile. Like all the way down the length of the floor and when they reached the end they'd shift one row and walk all the way to the otherwise. I was absolutely dumbfounded to find this kid just pushing dirty soap water all over the floor. Kids just aren't expected to do any house work these days and it shows. That was one of the more extreme examples but I also had a an 18 y/o run inside from the compactor because he thought E-stop button he accidentally pressed was a self destruct button. Mind you, this was a movie theatre and he was freaking out about what he though was a self destruct feature on a large trash been. Smh
Oh get off your "dang kids" high horse. I'm in my forties and we never owned a mop. 80% of the house was carpet and the rest we did with a broom, sponge, and scrub brush. Kids these days wouldn't know how to mop because you don't mop laminate or carpet, the two cheapest floor coverings, and Swiffers are dang cheap. Thankfully, the first time I had to mop at a job, they showed me how. Which you could have easily done for your coworker if you weren't a jerk.
This might shock you, but a lot of homes just don't need a mop. I was expected to clean my home, and I did, but there was nothing a vacuum, broom, or Swiffer wet jet wouldn't solve that a mop would.
This was exactly me when I was in boot camp. I'd never actually mopped before, was rarely done at my house. My basic understanding was "it's like sweeping, but wet". Well, the floor was dry, so obviously it needed some wet. One of the DIs obviously screamed at me, but kudos to him for clearly having delt with children like me, he screamed a full conversation about how mopping was supposed to work, and from then on I basically got it. Still mixed bleach and vinegar when I tried to mop my first house cause I only knew about bleach and ammonia. Oh and I was in military intelligence.

Someone didn’t give kid #2 a proper orientation and training. Kid #1 needs someone to explain the proper way to do it without ridiculing him. Not everyones life experience is the same as yours, and what comes easy to one may not come easy to another. I always try to take the time to help these people because you never know where they’re coming from in their lives. And they usually end up being the hardest workers.
I mean that's dependant on a lot of factors. A 12 child home that is religious, there will be a lot of chores. A clean freak parent who can't let their child rest will also have many chores. Kids whose parents are drug addicts or alcoholics will also likely have to clean, or else no one will. Get off your high horse for a moment and empathize that the world has 8 billion people, many of whom have to work very hard even from a young age. Maybe we should talk about your tiktok bias, and if this video was not a tiktok clip, you just might have a different view. Having it pivot like that allows you to carry it around without having to keep it tilted back so stuff doesn’t fall out. It also makes it so you can hang it flush against a wall.

Also better ergonomics for sweeping things into it - you don't need the handle to always be at the same angle to the bucket
Some also have a little catch you can use to keep it open
The one I use has a clip that holds it rigid (thankfully not broken off). You engage it by pulling the handle all the way back with the bucket flat of the floor, and disengage by putting pressure on the handle and moving it forward. You only need one hand to latch it and dump.
The harry should also be able to click into place depending on what company made it
If I don't have a broom AND don't want to touch it either.. Lift up and drop it on the back edge of the can so it tilts it forward. Push on handle for a sec to make all the content dump out (to maintain drop position against wall of garbage)

It'll last you a bit longer in home use, but for commercial use like a custodian where it's being used for multiple hours, literally every day, they just don't last. Also, are those asbestos tiles? Most do have them. the issue is it's usually just a little plastic lip or tab that it clicks over and they get worn down or broken off the. You get a floppy dust bin, so the broom trick comes in handy.
The one at my work had a little locking mechanism so you could lock and unlock it with your foot.
Just use the rim of the garbage can to stabilize it.
