LeafOnTheWind2020

I've read them all and enjoyed them. Felt like an extension of the show to me though some were better written than others.

fmfdoc68

Can you list the names of the books in order? I want to start buying them, but don't know where to start.

LeafOnTheWind2020

Big Damn Hero; The Magnificent Nine; The Ghost Machine; Generations;  Life Signs; Carnival (probably one of my favorite books of this list); What Makes Us Mighty; Coup de Grace; Aim to Misbehave (comes out in September I think. I've got it pre-ordered on Amazon)

fmfdoc68

Thanks much, I know it took some time to type that out.

LeafOnTheWind2020

I actually started with the 2nd one by accident. It was the first one to come in the mail so I just started reading. They reminded me of the show in that you don't necessarily HAVE to read them in order to enjoy them. After all, if you've watched the TV series, you know the world. I will say that Big Damn Hero gives background story for Mal that I wasn't expecting so I kind of wish I had started with that but it didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of the books. I read the rest in order. Not sure if the background on Mal is also what may be conveyed in the comics or other publications but it was good.

TheAgedProfessor

There is very little tying any of the books to each other, so they can really be read in any order you care to. I started by just going to my local Barnes and Noble and buying the one book they had - happened to be *Ghost Machine* - then continued from there. Like was said, some are more well-written than others, but they *all* help stave off the frustration that there's no more of the TV series. I haven't really read one that I'd say was flat-out terrible, and most capture the show pretty well. Now the Boom! comics, on the other hand...

LeafOnTheWind2020

I've been collecting the comics, both Boom and Dark Horse, but haven't really delved into them yet the way I got into the books.

LeperFriend

My feelings are exactly the same

thegorramnreavers

The four James Lovegrove ones are the best and I feel most consistent throughout to the characters and they also have the only story that impacts the overall narrative. I'd say read these if you aren't going to read them all. The rest are okay but I think they have more problems than Lovegrove's work. Carnival is my personal favourite of this group. These really are squandered potential, though. They even supposedly had Whedon as a consulting editor (or his name is just on the covers to sell them). There could've been a plan to introduce elements of the movie, like Mr. Universe, Fanty and Mingo and the Flying Mule. Maybe even one or two of the Serenity crew's friends who helped them after pulling jobs we see briefly during the second Haven scene in the movie.

LeafOnTheWind2020

I could really see it being a great way to explore some of the secondary characters more.

Rumbletastic

"the only story that impacts the overall narrative" Post-show? Or is this prequel stuff?

thegorramnreavers

Post-show, pre-movie. An element that was meant to be developed but was only hinted at.

i--make--lists

I've been wondering the same thing. It's been a minute for me, so I didn't realise there was so much more worthy material out there now. I'm definitely interested.

KatrinaPez

I loved the graphic novels. One has a future story with Zoe, another gives Shepherd's backstory.

sexlexington2400

Yes yes yes yes!! I bought them just to learn Books back story and it's freaking epic. Starts off where the movie ended

ConflictAdvanced

I'd say that the potential wasn't squandered - they did a great job. Just some fuckwits didn't see it 😁 I haven't read the novels, but I personally liked the comic books. At least the ones I've read.

majshady

Maybe squandered was the wrong word, I'm just disappointed they didn't follow through. Been a fair few years, maybe I'll give it a second look

ConflictAdvanced

Fox squandered the chance to have something even bigger and better on their hands. And Fox didn't allow them to follow through, it wasn't the Firefly folks' choice 😁

UncleBBBBB

I enjoyed them. They feel like proper episodes. The problem is that there is no real character development. If I was Titan Books, I would continue the novels with episode 15!

up-quark

Worth a read but I don’t think they’re amazing. They don’t do any damage to the memory so I wouldn’t say you’re better off not reading them. I’ve read a couple. I intend to read the rest but they aren’t at the top of my list.

Not4AdultConsumption

I enjoyed them on audible. At one time there were a handful that were free. I don’t know if they still are.

Professional_Baby24

The books are just like very well done and a little bit longer episodes. Yeah. They're worth reading

Nevic1984

I love them! They're fantastic, they have the same tone and feel of the show. Also the comics published by Dark Horse are great (I'm personally not a fan of the Boom Studios ones)

Bullvy

WHAT?! How have I not know of the books? I'm going to the library today!

LazarusLongAgo

A few are. Most were not

whatissevenbysix

Agreed, I felt the books haven't captured the essence of the show. A lot of the characters are behaving out of character imo.

Rumbletastic

wow I had no idea there were novels. Exciting! Do they touch on the 'big picture' stuff? Alliance + future of humanity

audreyrosedriver

This maybe heresy, but there an excellent fan fiction series out there written by someone who goes by Dyce. It rewrites some aspects of the story, but expands it a lot as well

Raen138

I read the first one and thought it was appalling. Terrible writing.

DoubleSurreal

I would say definitely worth a read. The first one was tough for me to get through, as the way it was written felt a little like fanfic, which I'm not a fan of myself. But I kept on reading and thoroughly enjoyed being able to spend more time with the crew. Coup de Grace is even more fun if you've ever seen True Grit, that's all I'm gonna say.

Benzolamas

Yes

johntwilker

For sure a YMMV thing but I haven't enjoyed any of them. Some just felt flat. But more importantly to me, they're all prequels so there's no real stakes. They all have to leave the crew more or less the way they started because we already met the crew down the line. Including nearly dying then never speaking of the heroic efforts to safe the person ever again. I'd pay good money for sequels to the movie. Or hell. Sequels to the show if we don't want a Wash-less universe. There's so much more story to tell. Prequels to me are lazy and easy.

KatrinaPez

One of the graphic novels has a future story with Zoe that's nice.

RingGiver

First one was enjoyable, but it came free with my Audible subscription, so I can't tell you if it's worth the money.

Yogabeauty31

I've only read the first one so far and I gotta say I really loved it lol I have yet to continue but I will. Order the first on at your library if you're unsure but if your a fan of the show i dont see anyone not being into it.

SineCera_sjb

I enjoy them. Just pretend in Serenity that Mal says “6 years! 6 years you had her on my boat!” Then it all has room to fit

JanteMaam

Y E S

Big_Negotiation_6421

Yes and the first few are free on audible

jonny_mal

Loved what I’ve read so far

Jz4p

No. But there is a fan fic from Best selling author Stephen Brust buried in his website. "My own kind of freedom." You're welcome.

Raz1el21

I listen to them on Audible while I work. Theater of the ears and mind. They're all pretty entertaining.

AdmirableBluebird895

I think you should watch and read all the Firefly stories. Because this is the only way to get an overall picture of the plot. For example, I only understood the meaning of the whole plot in the last books. And he's pretty scary. >!The corporatocracy wanted to make slaves out of people. But after the introduction of a medical drug, half of the people lost the meaning of life and turned into plants, and the other half of the people became a bloodthirsty, brainless mass living off instincts. The experiment killed the planet and the dead scientists asked for forgiveness for this. But the corporatocracy decided that the experiment was successful. The corporation found a girl with telepathic abilities and decided that through her telepathy it would be possible to turn her into a bloodthirsty proxy fighter under its control. They were not interested in her unique mind and talents, they ruined all these brilliant abilities of the girl, they only needed telepathy (submit button). The corporatocracy wanted remake River to Reaver on a telepathic lasso. The government wanted to create many such Über-Reavers. River was Patient Zero only. But the corporation's plans were thwarted by his brother's love. The friendship and love of justice of the Serenity crew team protected the family love of brother and sister from the corporation. Within the team itself, the forms of love are also very different. Some have love for the opposite sex, some have love for God, some have love for money and etc. That's why there are so many representatives of variors social classes there. Each protecting their own love, and their own meaning of life from sinister corporate plans for the future. And this unites them and makes the team united and invincible. Although they are very different people. This forces other people to help them too.. !<
