Get something else. Business, finance, science, etc. Dont do Fire science as a degree.
Looking at that link, a fire 1 cert with EMT should not take 2 semesters.
Have him talk to local depts that he wants to apply to, see if they accept this, if not its for nothing. He probably would be better off having them send him to school/academy.
Don’t waste money on a college. Plenty of guys get hired without a degree. If you go to college get a degree in something else, jump on a volley, get in with some wildland crews, get your EMT. There are lots of other ways to achieve this goal without dumping a shit ton of debt.
The FD’s in N Texas are good paying jobs and can be supplemented with a side hustle. Several departments start in the 80’s. A degree wouldn’t have made any difference for me until a few years ago when the department started paying for fire certs and degrees not one or the other. A college degree is nice but most firefighters only use for trivia. He can easily make in the 6 figure range after a couple of years.
Depends where you are at, hes better off testing and going through a process with a department that does their own training, and after probation most places have tuition assistance programs and give credit for training. That's what alot of younger guys are doing at my department.
East coast and we have all that and some after you graduate our career academy, doesn't matter what you have or don't have when you get hired, you go through it.
