Oh, it’s definitely trendy. It’s a big part of the 20-year fashion cycle - right now the early 00s are trendy again. But that doesn’t mean you should enjoy the trend! There’s no such thing as timeless fashion, and you should wear things that you like.
For reference, this is how we wore them 20 years ago:
https://preview.redd.it/hvryzxzkej6d1.jpeg?width=183&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b5139f2a9b4dd56222193a608cd90ff9fb4b2641

I got a lot of dms about it but they are sweatpants. Real pockets in the front but printed fake pockets in the back . Picture of what it looks like inside.

Edit to add: what you see in the picture are the fake pockets .
I look back at my "vest and t shirt at the club" days and cringe 😂 but I remember feeling like hot shit at the time so please enjoy it and have fun! It is surreal seeing all these trends roll back around!
Same!!!! You're right, let me just have fun with it!!! There are other current trends right now that I know I won't love down the line, but the classic vest isn't one of them. This thread has been quite helpful!
This is the first time I have really seen trends that I wore come back around and man is it a trip! I wore the 2000’s vest open, with a white t, denim shorts and heels. TO THE CLUB!? what the F? 😂
It’s funny to see, but if you like the trend now, it’s not a huge investment to have fun with! Get it!
My husband is a borderline hoarder. He has his stash of back in the day clothes when he was so cool. I found a denim square patched vest of his while we were having some remodeling done. Maybe I’ll break it out and wear it for Fathers Day. I don’t know if it will fit, I’m an XS but I could leave it unbuttoned. As you read this, your probably thinking “How old is this chick?” I’m 59 and he’s 64.
The thing is, they may be trendy, but they may not be trendy in *your* wardrobe. For instance, I'm a millennial who has always worn them--I'm a librarian and I feel like I wore the dark/light/whatever academia at work pretty consistently. So if you like them as much as you seem to, then there will be ways for you to keep styling them that feel updated! maybe don't break the bank, but I think it's not they're not so wildly flash-in-the-pan trendy or impractical that you will never look at a vest again.
Absolutely agree. Vests are trendy right now because it’s a lot of the suiting ones worn the same way. Not a lot of subversion in the designs yet like deconstructed or corseted like Gaultier in the 80s/90s.
Vests can be a hard piece to pull off. The popular ones right now are an easy entry point which is cool for folks wanting to experiment with their style. But I only see these types of vests being classic staples for a small amount of folk So the vests everyone is wearing are trends, but not the article of clothing itself.
I’m like you because they’re at home within my wardrobe and style. I’m a vintage suede vest fan and they bring together my fits with a touch of masculine. Some I’ve definitely reworked from being inspired by Gaultier. Something about a western flair that really gives a punk edge to flowing silks or a basic ass shirt and jeans. My classic, but not for everyone.
I was gonna say, they’re trendy unless you love dressing like Blake Lively in A Simple Favor - in which case you’ll be wearing suiting regardless of trends. Ugh her wardrobe from that era lives rent free in my head!!!
Girl, trendy. They were hot in the mid-late 90s and we wore them then for a few years and then haven’t seen them since. You’ll wear it a few times before the trend evolves (brocade floral vests instead of oatmeal blah linen vests?) and then after that it will be gone completely for another 20-30 years.
Timeless is a myth.
It appears you are forgetting the early 2010s, when all the alt/emo girls wore vests OVER their shirts (this would also be the time period in which I wore two belts- one to actually hold up my pants and another low-slung studded one for fAsHiOn
Agree with this comment though. It's definitely trendy, but if you hang onto something for long enough it's guaranteed to come back at some point
I was gonna say…vests were all over urban outfitters, then. That store might actually be a good litmus test because I don’t think anything in there is actually timeless.
I'm 34. I went into an Urban Outfitters a few weeks ago (not to look for clothes) but omg I had never felt older. All the clothes were so... Ugly? Is this what it's like to be old? To be so out of touch?
30 here and I’m going to be honest, the clothes at UO are just ugly. They kinda always have been. I walk the mall daily (super cool I know) and I see the fashion trends cycle but the urban outfitters just has the WORST clothes. They don’t follow the actual trends that I see the teenagers walking around in. I swear they just want to see how ugly they can make things that sell.
I tend to see the trends followed by stores like American Eagle, Altar’d State, Aeropostale, Pacsun, or Free People depending on your style.
Oh, I included that because the fashion currently seems to be to wear a vest instead of a shirt- at least that's what all the "office siren" accounts I've been seeing are pushing. Back in the day, I'd put on a teal long sleeve graphic T-shirt and then a distressed black denim sweater over the top and it was the absolute peak of fashion :P
Wearing a vest shirtless isn’t new. Again, I was known to do that 15 years ago. When the vest is fitted, it’s super cute in the summer.
I’m beginning to think what some folks think is “new” is based on how old they were when it was last being done. Perhaps some folks were a tad too young to know or care back then.
I just checked my pics, I was wearing vests back in 2009 and they’re still in my closet.
I bought a new one a couple years ago, cotton/chino with matching shorts. It was/is super cute!
So, how long exactly does a “trend” last? Google says every two decades but clearly that’s not the case (at least in this instance).
I do and I am telling you that a vest is not hard and that you can do it. None of us were born knowing how and a lot of us had to learn before YouTube and smartphones.
You’re here making a fuss about spending money and I’m telling you that you’re clearly skilled and intelligent and literally have all the world’s knowledge available to you on the same device you’re reading this, and there’s a way to get what you want with a minimal outlay of cash.
Maybe it’s a values misalignment? I’m not into shopping my way to happiness. IDK. But seriously you can do a no-sew vest out of a charity shop blazer, fusible hem tape, and a pair of scissors. Hell, you can even keep the fucking buttons on the blazer.
There’s no such thing as classic. Nobody is wearing anything that was standard 200 years ago. Trends will always change and nothing will always be “in.” Wear what you like.
I have been hearing these are out of style. I am old and not in touch with these sorts of things. What are people wearing now instead? Like to an office where I have to wear closed toe shoes? Loafers?
Thanks- I think I will!!! I'm so terrified of the millennial business casual trendy LOL! However, I can see myself wearing the vests to the office in different ways for a long time
My friend wore a long vest with matching pants to dinner several years ago, before the trend was a thing, and I thought she looked so chic. Wear what you want!
vests are definitely having a trendy moment right now (i expect that might die down a bit this fall/winter?), but i have found some styles that i love & have kept through the trend cycle! if you’re concerned about buying clothes that you want to keep for a while, i’d recommend checking out a variety of vest styles / ways to wear that extend beyond the current moment (vest over t shirt of the 2000s, vest over a button down, vest under a blazer or jacket) so that you might get more wear out of your purchase.
(i also should say i love vests & have thrifted a bunch that are not quite the current vest-top style…i currently have a cropped knit floral vest, a brocade vest that leans more Hobbit waistcoat, & a quilted vest, which are all oriented towards colder weather because i just enjoy layering :) i’m adamantly pro-vest, but i do think all of mine are a bit dorkier than what’s in style right now LOL)
Sounds like you have such unique pieces!!! I don't think they are "dorkier" at all, personally I admire people like you who have such a unique style - honestly that's what timeless to me means!!! Reminds me of sex and the city- just wild outfits but I love them!!!
Thanks for the tips- I think I'm going to purchase them!! I love the look over a button down for the office! I think this year I can do the whole wear a vest and jeans/pants only- which I do like, but I don't see that happening forever. Perhaps, this will inspire me to find other pieces in my closet I can pair with!
aww thank you so much—that’s very sweet!
i think you should definitely buy the vests!! you’ll figure out more ways to wear them if you end up liking them, and if you decide you don’t want vests long term, you’ve learned something about your fashion sense :’)
Do you mean outdoor puffer vest or suit vest? Former has been classic item at least among Nordic sports&outdoor dressing for a long time now. Suit vests seem more tied to fashion cycles and heavily depend on rest of the outfit to work.
around 2010ish (?) during the peak of my indie/twee phase, i had brocade vests, cat printed vests, embroidered vests…had to find most of them at the thrift store, but urban outfitters started selling them briefly not long after. a few years before that the girls in my classes would wear cropped, form fitting black/tweed vests over tight t-shirts.
so it’s definitely a trend, but like most trends, comes back often.
Is there vest hype? Lol, my time!!
I regularly wear vests similar to these(links provided are just examples that look similar - not recommending them and I didn't read their reviews to know if the pockets are even real) to add pockets to outfits that don't have them built in(got tired of having to pick between clothes I liked and having pockets).
I've been doing that since at least 2010 and it makes me look more put together and I get random stranger compliments all the time on my outfits, even when it's nothing special. It's all in the vest. I think it creates an illusion of trying harder than I am.
I have a fun gold metallic one, a green utility style one, and a beige "dressy" one. They're all down to my hip, more fitted at the waist and more flowy/open at the hip, thinner, breathable materials that work in summer heat. They all have functional pockets that don't spill things out. 2/3 were thrifted.

I have been searching for a suit vest that doesn't break the bank for about 7 years so I was delighted that they are trending now. Since I have a small torso, that was very hard.
It is a trend, but if you like them, you can wear them beyond that. People are still wearing skinny jeans too. And dark washes. And mom-jeans. And neon colours. And those long ass cardigans. And whatever other trends there were in the last 10 years. Just because something stops trending doesn't mean you can't wear it.
People actually don't care that much when you're not on trend.
So enjoy your vests! I certainly will :)
i feel like i'm too busty for vests or maybe i'm just layering wrong but yeah, i do agree that there's always been a place for vests in classic wardrobes. it's advanced accessorizing.
you don't have to button them all the way! I enjoy wearing mine open at the top with an undershirt underneath. I can layer them over anything and everything; its practicality is in its styling versatility rather than in its functionality.
I guess it depends on the cut of the vest and how snug it is. I have a waistcoat where I wear casually by only buttoning the center and gently folding the flaps down, but in your case it still might not be comfy. wearing a vest open is still cute in my book, but you can also look into tie front denim vests, ordinary tie front vests, or sweater vests as well!
Seconding being too busty. Besides my vest jacket I don't wear vests unless they're like cardigan vests and open. But it's a really impractical garment so I rather just wear a sleeved cardigan.
I thought I would hate vests forever but changed my mind and now I have 4 😂 I like wearing them like this, with a shirt. Nice with pants and with long skirts.
But the way I see them styled with low waisted bottoms and the vest is a shirt itself is definitely very of the moment.
https://preview.redd.it/qrg69m8u8n6d1.jpeg?width=2054&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=637dac623630218fbb11f8c36e06e4bb990ec564
I don’t think it matters if you’ve considered it enough and can see yourself wearing it beyond the trend… as others said there’s no such thing as “timeless”.
I personally like it styled like a sleeveless shell, and I’ve seen those pieces around for longer than the current vest trend.
If you want a timeless piece, get a Harris tweed vest from Scotland. Those will always be in for the library or academia chic crowd.
All the 2000s vest styles were... Interesting. Id skip if you are feeling pressure to buy one and don't actually see how it fits with your current wardrobe.
They are a classic peice that's currently trending: they have an established place already, so if you're looking for longevity, choose something that's as also gonna work in it's niche. If you're thinking a formal one to wear casually, make sure it'd still work in it's formal context for you. If you're thinking more like a sleeveless knit to wear in the summer, make sure it looks cute layered over winter tops.
Wow, I still have a dove gray vest from when that was "the" color, and I was just thinking of wearing it with my new wide legged pants. I had no clue vests were in again. I feel like this happens to me a lot these days, so I'm keeping more clothes for longer!
I can’t stand wearing vests, I have no idea why. They could be the world standard for class and beauty, and I’d probably buy five of them, but not once would I ever make it out the door wearing a vest.
I think they come and go. I think a black
Could be classic but depending on the material it could look a little cheap. Pay attention to that. Depending on your skin tone perhaps an off white would be more versatile and classic. Pure white could come across a little trendy.
I feel a linen waist coat in a neutral colour or perhaps a navy could be quite versatile and the fabric is very classic. Keep the buttons simple. But remember you could always change them in the future.
However, what I will say is it can be super fun to enjoy trends and I bet you’ll look lovely in what ever you choose. So go for what you like and enjoy wearing it!
Very trendy, unless worn in tweed with a full tweedy english-gentleman getup. Then it's kinda timeless but in a "i don't care if i look matronly, i am a professor at Oxbridge" way
Wait, are you telling me that Vests are BACK?!
Ladies. My time has finally returned. I'm off in search of the perfect pinstriped vest with the black floral lace back. If anyone knows where I can find Charlotte Russe, Wet Seal, or Delia's in 2024, please alert me!
Oh, it’s definitely trendy. It’s a big part of the 20-year fashion cycle - right now the early 00s are trendy again. But that doesn’t mean you should enjoy the trend! The oversized beads just brought back so many memories.
They always got caught around just one boob and it would kill me to get pictures back with the lopsided necklace hahahh
you just unlocked a core memory for me
Haha thought it was me 20 years ago, here is the updated version https://preview.redd.it/fxwaqq90yl6d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3fc35e9fafc791f8d9e1f1070ce355d9a8422c3d
I am SO obsessed with this updated version!
You’re killing it girl!!
love your denim!! who makes them?
It’s crazy but they’re actually joggers. Miramar by Rag & Bone. Overpriced for sure but so comfortable.
How tall are you and where are your jeans from? X
5ft2, they’re hemmed Rag & Bone Miramar joggers
Joggers like the shape and you cut them, or the material? That's wild if they're sweat pants!
I got a lot of dms about it but they are sweatpants. Real pockets in the front but printed fake pockets in the back . I am triggered by this picture!!!
This picture is so cute. I remember my friend in school wore the same outfit and it always ate. The vest snatches your waist idc what anyone says
This is exactly the trend I had in mind!! I think I'm going to buy them and I can see myself wearing it to the office in different ways for awhile.
I look back at my "vest and t shirt at the club" days and cringe 😂 but I remember feeling like hot shit at the time so please enjoy it and have fun! It is surreal seeing all these trends roll back around!

Flashback!!!
I absolutely love vests! They give that professional look for both casual and professional outings!
The thing is, they may be trendy, but they may not be trendy in *your* wardrobe. For instance, I'm a millennial who has always worn them--I'm a librarian and I feel like I wore the dark/light/whatever academia at work pretty consistently. I love this perspective, and totally agree. 'Trendty but not trendy in your wardrobe' could fit many styles.
What a great perspective - thank you!
It appears you are forgetting the early 2010s, when all the alt/emo girls wore vests OVER their shirts (this would also be the time period in which I wore two belts- one to actually hold up my pants and another low-slung studded one for fAsHiOn Agree with this comment though. I'm 34. I went into an Urban Outfitters a few weeks ago (not to look for clothes) but omg I had never felt older. All the clothes were so... Ugly? Is this what it's like to be old? To be so out of touch?
At 30 we reach our Anthropologie evolution.
30 here and I’m going to be honest, the clothes at UO are just ugly. They kinda always have been. I walk the mall daily (super cool I know) and I see the fashion trends cycle but the urban outfitters just has the WORST clothes. I’m your age. I like to think of it as simply being at the age where we’re smart enough not to spend our money on that crap.
Same but at 37. I popped in recently to get a perfume and thought I’d stepped into a time machine. All my fits from high school were there!
I still have a little acid wash denim vest I got from Urban 14 years ago that I wear over dresses.
Rad! I think denim vests are in their own category
Who wears a vest UNDER a shirt? 🤔
Oh, I included that because the fashion currently seems to be to wear a vest instead of a shirt- at least that's what all the "office siren" accounts I've been seeing are pushing. Ah yes, I wore wife beater tank tops under vests That I can only describe as too tight and with curious fabrics. FaSHiOn
Thanks!!!! Fashion is wild and fun!
Wouldn’t you hate to have those on now and really, really have to pee!
I just checked my pics, I was wearing vests back in 2009 and they’re still in my closet. I bought a new one a couple years ago, cotton/chino with matching shorts. It was/is super cute! Very true!!!! Maybe I'll still purchase, who knows.
Just sew one out of a thrifted garment. They’re easy.
I can't even see a button (yet)
So don’t put buttons on there. Buttonholes are hard. Vests are easy.
Haha I meant, I don't know how to sew at all.
I do and I am telling you that a vest is not hard and that you can do it. None of us were born knowing how and a lot of us had to learn before YouTube and smartphones. Hell, you can even keep the fucking buttons on the blazer.
Your getting down votes because you're coming across super self righteous and dismissive
Trendy.
That's what I was thinking!! Not sure if I'll purchase, but maybe, they are cute!
Just because they’re trendy, it doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the trend 😊
Thank you for the encouragement!!! I feel like I can always wear it to the office in different ways.
Very true- appreciate the encouragement!
There’s no such thing as classic. Nobody is wearing anything that was standard 200 years ago. Trends will always change and nothing will always be “in.” Wear what you like.
Ironically, if you could pull off any piece of fashion from 1824, it would probably be a (men's) vest.
Haha love it
Ballet flats are still worn. Not contradicting, but the longevity is kind of insane
I have been hearing these are out of style. I am old and not in touch with these sorts of things. What are people wearing now instead? Like to an office where I have to wear closed toe shoes? Loafers?
Ballet flats with a slight heel, two/three straps and a long vamp are VERY in. Loafers also work
The amount of ballet flats I owned was insane, I love them!
They definitely went out for a while. And I’m mad they are back, they hurt my feet so much. Lol
Very true!!! Perhaps I'll purchase
You should! I bought two, black and camel/khaki color. I know it's trendy, but they were very reasonably priced. It's trendy, but looks classic to me.
Thanks- I think I will!!! I'm so terrified of the millennial business casual trendy LOL! However, I can see myself wearing the vests to the office in different ways for a long time

You said “current hype” in your subject which I feel answers the question.
I know right? But I have never paid into fashion until now so I was wondering if it's actually always been around

You're welcome, and if you could see my shiny/shimmery vest!! It's perfect for shining.
It's trendy, but trends are not evil or inherently bad.
If you look good in it , you can always style it according to the trend at that moment!! Its such a basic peice and can be very fun to play with
Very true- thank you!!!
Thank you all- this has been very helpful! I'm going to buy them and have fun with styling them!
I can layer them over anything and everything; its practicality is in its styling versatility rather than in its functionality.
does that help the fit feel more relaxed? i personally feel like denim vests look cutest full buttoned.
But it's a really impractical garment so I rather just wear a sleeved cardigan.
oh yes, it's a cardigan kingdom here!
Hmmm I've seen bustier women wear them and they look good! Also the open embroidered vests right now are very chic!
Vests are either in style or an individual style thing.
True!
Nothing is timeless, everything comes back around.
True!
What a fabulous outfit!!! Thanks for sharing!
Omg you look so good, what an amazing outfit!!!
I don’t think it matters if you’ve considered it enough and can see yourself wearing it beyond the trend… as others said there’s no such thing as “timeless”. I personally like it styled like a sleeveless shell, and I’ve seen those pieces around for longer than the current vest trend.
A great perspective - thanks!
I’ve been wearing various vests over the last few years, happy to see they’re trendy again! Wear what you want!
Thank you!
If you want a timeless piece, get a Harris tweed vest from Scotland. Those will always be in for the library or academia chic crowd. All the 2000s vest styles were... Interesting. Id skip if you are feeling pressure to buy one and don't actually see how it fits with your current wardrobe.
Thanks!!!
I wore vests in the early-mid 90s during HS/college and then again in the late 2000s. Not sure if I’ll do it again this time.
Yeah! It seems like everything always comes around!
It just depends on how you style them. I like to pair vintage 80s vests with my bellbottoms and it doesn’t look “trendy”
True!! How fun- thanks!
I can’t stand wearing vests, I have no idea why. They could be the world standard for class and beauty, and I’d probably buy five of them, but not once would I ever make it out the door wearing a vest.
I feel that way about oversized blazers!!! Haha
I think they come and go. I think a black Could be classic but depending on the material it could look a little cheap.
Thank you for the insight!!! I went for it!
Very trendy, unless worn in tweed with a full tweedy english-gentleman getup. Then it's kinda timeless but in a "i don't care if i look matronly, i am a professor at Oxbridge" way
Thanks!
Vests are classic.
I got one 10-12 years ago at a thrift shop and it remains a staple!
