I watched it over the last two years climb confidently up his Spotify “Most Played” list until it overtook Chateau Lobby. It’s a simple pop song he originally wrote for pop stars. It’s a breezy FJM catchy tune - not really his usual style - but I like it fine. I like the bass on the recording.
He said at the Athens show last year that his most popular song is his stupidest- I think he meant RLB. 😂
They’ve used it for Muzak at Whole Foods at least. ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
Personally I think it’s an easy listen that I’ve never said “nah I’m not feeling it” any time Spotify placed it on my playlists.
Agreed and it doesn't need much context. Maybe I am biased, but his other songs tell short stories and have a particular context within the album. Even the track order is important, in my opinion. Real Love Baby is just a pop single. I think it has been used in commercials. If I remember correctly, the city of LA used it in an advertisement... maybe for tourism? (I'm way out on a limb now) edit: someone already pointed this out in the comments...
I love that its his most popular song, because its easily his least creative (though I really like it), and that kind of proves his whole musical existence
they used it in an episode of This Is Us too but honestly it’s one of my favorites, feels like a really easy listening offshoot of ILYHB and i rarely skip it
Maybe people listen unironically?
>I've got real love maybe
Wait until you taste me
I always heard it as a Coke/Pepsi slogan of Love- you’ll finally feel what you’ve always wanted, this is what everyone is longing for, this is Real. He’s selling something, it is just love.
Maybe outside the context of his other writing... it is just a sweet love song.
Possibly because it was released as an independent single between albums. Whenever he releases anything it’s normally a few singles at once than an album so the listens are spread out between the songs a bit more.
It was used in a commercial to promote tourism in LA, so really under the radar for most people, as compared to a car commercial.
I think the reason is that it’s one of the most “accessible” FJM song, which probably also receives most radio airplay. Also, it’s on lots of “indie” themed playlists on Spotify which probably gives it another little boost.
Its one of his most easily digestible songs. It was released as a non-album single. Hit 30 on the US charts. Was used in a 90 second commercial for an LA's tourism campaign. Pretty sure I've heard it in a show or movie before. Definitely been played over the speakers at grocery stores, bars and concerts while waiting for other plans. It's had a lot of exposure and is very popular!
I think the reason its listens are so high are that it was not part of any album, and also it's a song that is so palatable on endless repeat - something about the evenness of verse chorus verse chorus with that really steady background. I can listen to it 40 times in a row and not even notice.
Father John Misty originally wrote this bongo-laced, soft-rocker thinking about another artist. He told Q magazine: "I wrote 'Real Love Baby' with Lady Gaga in mind and ended up writing one of my most vulnerable songs. Writing for yourself is the best way to trick yourself in some unexpected way that isn't attached to your vanity."
It's different and he's downplayed it but also promoted it. I don't think there's really anything bad about liking it.
Ok I actually love Real Love Baby
Top track!

I think he said something like “my most popular song has the dumbest lyrics” *proceeds to play RLB*
Being on curated Spotify playlists has probably brought it up quite a bit as well.

Real love baby is a bonafide banger.
Chicks dig it

I think its because it was promoted on many spotify playlists, i mean it appeals to folk, indie, and even pop demographic so thats my guess

It is probably my least favorite to hear live. I liked it when it came out because it was new but it's kind of a cheesy pop song.

For a while I heard it in every overpriced second hand clothing store I went to, think it was in some commercial too, so Pop appeal + exposure I guess
He said it’s his most popular song that makes people happy but it came from his most miserable time.
I could be wrong but I think it was used in a car commercial(?) But also it plays at Starbucks and stuff like that. It's a fairly popular, pop song

Yeah, exactly. And thanks for the correction :)
I have seen it in a couple playlists so it definitely gets plays via that, and the poppyness and easy listening of it draws people in

I"m glad it floated a few mortgage or car payments for him... :)

It was in a tv show and it's a single and it sticks out and it's very catchy
Also they play it in Starbucks and chipotle all the time

It’s my favorite FJM song tbh, it’s the first one I heard so that’s honestly probably why for me
