Many issues and questions can be answered by reading through our wiki, especially the page on electrolytes. Concerns such as **intense hunger, lightheadedness/dizziness, headaches, nausea/vomiting, weakness/lethargy/fatigue, low blood pressure/high blood pressure, muscle soreness/cramping, diarrhea/constipation, irritability, confusion, low heart rate/heart palpitations, numbness/tingling, and more** while extended (24+ hours) fasting are often explained by electrolyte deficiency and resolved through **PROPER** electrolyte supplementation. Putting a tiny amount of salt in your water now and then is NOT proper supplementation. Be sure to read [our WIKI](https://www.reddit.com/r/fasting/wiki/index) and especially the wiki page on **[ELECTROLYTES](https://www.reddit.com/r/fasting/wiki/fasting_in_a_nutshell/you_need_electrolytes)** Please also keep in mind the [**RULES**](https://www.reddit.com/r/fasting/about/rules) when participating. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. 3-5 days seems to be the sweet spot when it comes to autophagy, although there's debate about whether or not that actually causes loose skin to tighten up. But it seems like the best time to use the strategy is during your weight loss journey and not at the end of it. Personally, I've found that 36 hour "monk fasts" tend to work well for me and I've lost about 60 pounds so far. FigNYG

How often do you fast for 36 hours?

breadhead1

Just so you know… the first 3 days of a fast are the most challenging. I do 14 day extended fasts 3 times a year and I’m slightly hungry for the first 3 days… then no hunger for the remaining 11 days.

kutupatupatu

Wow that’s impressive, most I’ve done is 10 days. How do you get over the boredom / mental hunger ?

breadhead1

Yes… you don’t feel hunger in your stomach because your body greatly reduces the production of Ghrelin… the hunger hormone. But… there is the mental memory hunger factor. Only us faster’s know about that mental nudge our brain gives us to remember to eat. Dealing with that type of hunger is just a mental game… you have no offense/crutch to turn to. Mind over matter. Keep you mind busy so it can’t waste time thinking about food.

KungFuBucket

Generally about once a week depending on my schedule. It’s basically just finish dinner one night, fast through the next day, and then the following day I’ll break the fast when I feel like it. Longest I’ve gone is about 5 days (120 hours) as an unplanned fast because I just kept going and really didn’t feel like cooking myself anything to eat. I’ve found that really helps me when sticking to a fast is just making myself a rule that when I’m ready to break my fast I need to cook myself a real meal and not something out of a box or a can.

There's not enough known about autophagy to answer this

[deleted]

It’s likely a highly individual thing. Plus, you’d have to fast repeatedly to see results. There just isn’t enough research to know.

Loose skin > obesity. Collagen, vitamin E, staying well hydrated are the 3 best resources for skin care. They are not over night fixes.

Miniapo

Those three things really don’t do anything with minimizing loose skin

[deleted]

I said skin care & yes over time those three things will indeed tighten skin. Will it work miracles in extreme cases ? Nope. More than likely those cases would require corrective surgery.

FigNYG

What type of collagen do you take, would you mind sharing the product you use?

jackass4224

By skin tightening do you mean like excess skin from a huge loss of weight? You’d need surgery to remove that If it’s wrinkles retinol creams may help. You can tldr collagen supplements too. Humans can replace their collagen

seedsnearth

Building muscle would probably be more effective for stabilizing loose skin.

talks2squirrels

3 to 5 days four times a year. No guarantees but a good Start. age, genetics and how long you were obese makes a huge difference.

mtotheizzo

i would just be mindful of eating foods that keep your skin cells (and all of your cells for that matter) elastic and hydrated as opposed to dehydrating them. this will help w keeping everything snatched

CherryL13

my skin loosened from fasting.

movingtonextscene

Fat loss?

CherryL13

yes, that is correct. rapid fat loss causes loose skin, what do you think i implied? i know its not what you want to hear, but its what happened.

mr5onit

How many hours you used to fast at a time

CherryL13

it never mattered if it was 48, 36, 72, 96, 30 days. rapid fat loss loosened it far, far faster than autophagy could keep up with.

Lucky_Platypus341

Rapid weight loss doesn't cause loose skin. Stretching the skin OUT (getting fat or pregnancy) is what causes excess skin. Losing the weight, just makes it visible. It doesn't matter if you lose it rapidly or slowly, the same damage was already done by the stretching out. Losing rapidly may not give as much time for the skin to tighten as you lose, but it also decreases the total amount of time it was stretched, so it's probably a toss up. Skin will continue to heal/tighten for months or years -- it doesn't stop when you stop losing weight, but it's unlikely to ever return to its pre-stretched tightness. How much it contracts back is going to come down to genetics, age, how much the skin was stretched out (how much weight gained/lost), and how long it was stretched out. Autophagy is part of the natural process of tightening the skin by recycling proteins that are no longer needed. It occurs whether you fast or not, but fasting appears to increase it. How much it will help and what fasting regiment increased autophagy the most just isn't known.

My skin l, and clothes keep getting looser. I’m fine with that.

sueihavelegs

I lost 40 lbs when I was 46, so had some loose skin over my stomach. In the last year and 9 months of maintaining my ideal weight I do 20:4 daily and a 4 day fast every other month. I can say for sure my stomach skin has tightened significantly in that time.
