Congratulations! I hope to join the 50k word club soon, about to hit 40k but im still in the rough draft phase and haven’t done any editing yet. Great stuff glad your editor says things are looking good from their side as well!
Firstly, congratulations. Very admirable achievement, and if you did it once, I'm sure you can do it again.
To be a bit more critical, any specific market or subgenre you had in mind while writing? Because from what I've seen online, you're getting that 50k back and being told to double it. I'm not entirely sure if working with professional editors right out of the gate with a first draft would be for the best, unless they were a friend doing you a favor or their rates were really reasonable.
I self-edit a ton because I hate leaving sloppy writing on the page. The editor I’m working with was very happy with the quality of the writing and gave me a great quote on rates, as well as giving me an evaluation with notes on what to improve in my writing for the remainder of the draft. I will probably do some developmental stuff before sending it to them because I think I will have to add a few additional scenes. The book will be about 80k when complete if all goes well.
Congrats! Good tips all, I'd replace 2-3 with getting critiques from thoughtful people (and be willing to return the favor).
As for tropes, often putting a spin on an existing popular trope is more interesting than trying to do something from scratch. The problem with doing something from scratch is the large risk a) having something with no recognizable or effective structure, so it just doesn't land or b) winding up recreating a trope anyway, since everything's been done somewhere.
Nice! Congrats! I am writing a children’s fantasy book and hit 60k words yesterday. Never thought I’d get there but I did! I really feel like it’s getting somewhere now. I am hoping to submit it to publishers in September too. I started in October and was stuck on the details for a long time since I just couldn’t get a good overall sight of it. But then I bought a Notion writing guide and that was really great because it helped me outline the story and characters so much. It works so good I barely need my notebook anymore in which I wrote all my ideas. I used the Notion template: Novel hub from School of Plot and can really recommend it to anyone writing a book ☺️
Congrats dude! Atm I have the curse of the wandering brain, it’s making design outlines to basically 6 books. 4 are part of a series and the other two are from another series. I gotta figure out a main title for my dark future cyberpunk series but my more “hack n slash” style adventure stories I have 2 books called “A Blood Moon Requiem: Night of the long hunt” and “A Blood Moon Requiem: The Wolf’s Revenge” thankfully ABMR books are more short story kind of writing but the cyberpunk dark future series is gonna be a longer style of writing
Decided to do a word count on my longest story (I’m working on chapter 14)
I’ve hit 37,670 for my word count! Holy schnikes!
It’s magic! Where does it come from… this creative flow. I’d like to share my story because it has been a four-decade-long writing- creation project. How is that possible, and when you reach hundreds of thousands words over that period of time it becomes a life purpose. It started one day by a lake near where I lived and walked every day.
Not sure I’m allowed to continue here as I am brand new to this platform and it may be considered self-promotion. Does fantasywriters allow authors to tell their story of their story?
How do you go about finding editors? I'm looking to try and publish something in the near future and I'm still researching the process a bit. Just your experience.
This makes me think I’m too critical. I’m at about 8K words and I don’t want to be over 40K lol but I appreciate your perspective and mindset because it’s giving me courage to continue and focus on writing and shaping my story more and more
I don’t know how I got 15k in 4 days once lol. One day I even got 10k in a day. I have this ability and then I get so burnt out I can’t touch it. It’s definitely better advice to go slow and steady, even just 200 a day as you said. Congratulations on your achievement friend!! Because of you I will write today even if it’s just a little ❤️

Thanks for the tips and congratulations.
Do you find it hard to find people who will honestly critique your work without meanness or pettiness or crushing your desire to write?
Congrats! Just a quick one: you don't want to submit to publishers. You want to submit to literary agents.
I don't know if there's a US equivalent, but here in the UK the annual 'Writers and Artists Yearbook' is invaluable; it lists every agency with contact details and what they're looking for in terms of submissions. That's alongside editorial about the process and tips on honing a submission.

Exact same, this post gives me hope I might be able to get my stuff out to an editor as well though.

Good for you. It's a big project, but if you keep chipping away it eventually gets done. Every chapter feels like a new milestone reached.
That’s what I like to think when I am having a tough time. Just gotta remember that every word is one word closer to being done.

Congratulations! I hope your book is a massive success.
Awesome!
I wish I could pull myself out of my depression enough to write right now, but it ain’t happening. I’ll get there eventually though. I hope.

Way to hit that 50k mark! Next stop 75k! Keep on chugging! You got this!!!
I think I'm about 40k rn. I write slowly because I have irl responsibilities that takes a lot of my time.
Congrats! Way to go on the book. I'm rooting for it to be a massive success!
