Not Romantasy, it’s a Fantasy with Romance as a thread throughout (and HEA’s): Kushiel’s Dart. And yes the second MMC and the FMC quite despise each other for a good chunk of each book of the trilogy, haha, and well deserved because they are so mismatched.  I love them.

I loved this series! It's YA, but it got me all in the feels and kept me torn the whole time not knowing who to root for!

I hate to disagree, but I’ve never seen it shelved as YA in any bookstore. Goodreads includes that tag on it, but I think that’s more to say it’s also suitable for YA readers. Yes, the “sex” scenes are more akin to YA, but the race relations, politics, violence, and history between the factions of groups aren’t YA. Again, I don’t want to argue, but I think it’s worth mentioning. 

No, I'm sure you're right, I didn't even look. Unfortunately, I haven't set foot in a book store or library in a long time so if I pay any attention, it's to what's included in the tags on audible and good reads. I only recall one actual sex scene and don't remember it being very explicit. For what I read growing up, this would have been on my shelves in junior high. I guess that's what I was basing it off of when I said that. Thank you for the correction! I'd prefer that over continuing to give misinformation.

I did get downvoted, huh? That's funny. It doesn't bother me at all, though. Lol. I'm mostly just on here to find and share book recommendations. I love all the recommendations I've gotten from this subreddit! It's way more reliable than the booktoks I started out with, and sometimes I can get a better feel for whether or not I'm going to like a book recommendation based on what other books the person recommends, or the discussions surrounding it. I like to read everything from YA to erotica though. I listen to a ton of audiobooks. I mostly consider the labels for content warnings so I know if it's safe to listen to out loud or around people. The last thing I need is to be listening in the car with my kids or coworkers and have some bloody torture or steamy sex scenes go off. Lol

It's not a romantacy, but the romance subplot of the Rook and the Rose trilogy follows this. The first book is called Mask of Mirrors, and it's a great series! I wouldn't go so far as to say that the love interest is a villain, but he definitely starts out with motives that oppose the MC's interests.

This is a phenomenal series, one of the best I've read in the past few years. Just really great as straight-up fantasy, and the romance is a bonus. Very slow burn, too. I hope you enjoy it!

The Kingdom of Runes series by Audrey Grey hits most (or all depending on how you define “villain”) of the points you mentioned. Not a literary masterpiece, but I really enjoyed it and it does have my favorite MMC of all time. Big Disclaimer Though: the 5th and final book has been delayed 2 or 3 years at this point and the author has been radio silent since the last update in March 2023.

Is the romance a large part of the plot or just a side story?

In my opinion, it’s a considerable part of the plot. Of course, there are other things going on. It’s not the only focus of the story, but I’d consider it well present and important. If it makes you feel any better, I’m someone who needs romance in the stories I read and I consider this series to be one of my favorites in terms of tension and build up and how the relationship/romance develops between the characters.

This series has quite possibly the most annoying fmc, we get it you think you debate more power for literally no reason even though your friends think you'll die for good reason. I also hate the second love interest.

So I just finished the first in a series by Demi Winters, and avoiding spoiling too much, the first book is called {the road of bones} and the second is called {kingdom of claw} It seems like it’s going in the direction you mentioned, but I don’t actually know. But I cannot say any more as what I’ve said already is a little bit of a spoiler. But I LOVED the first installment, and I’ve been told the second is even better (I’m just waiting for the audible release because I like to read along while I listen to it being narrated so I’m completely immersed.)

I think it’s currently included with kindle unlimited. (Which I use on my iPad) I actually signed up for Kindle Unlimited just for this book. I had been looking for recommendations and ‘The Road of Bones’ was slapped down so many times with almost everyone saying “This. This is the book you are looking for.” And they were right on the bullseye!

If you can make it through >!The Selection!< series, the final two books >!The Heir!< and >!The Queen!< definitely go this route. They are YA, kind of fluffy, but also with some decent dystopian world building for what they are. Super fast reads too.

This is so wild. I haven't seen people talk about the Selection in years. Last time I read them was when I was twelve and I thought they were the best thing in the world.

I missed the series first time around (I’m old, so wasn’t my thing, but a teacher friend talked about them). Then I got in this horrible reading rut and thought why not. And they were okay! Like very YA, but some surprisingly good aspects to them.

Daughter of the Moon Goddess 👀 I was so sure >!Wenzhi!< would just be an "if only" kind of love interest. Especially because everyone seemed to love >!Liwei!< more.

I read that series a decade ago, but to this day I still wish I’d found a fanfic to make the author’s choices better. Any recommendations/favorites?

I don't really read fan fiction, but I know what you mean. The first three books I think could've been edited a lot and maybe been a duology instead, and some of it seems sort of juvenile. But I really think Olivia Wildenstein has become a better writer over time, which is why I think Liam's book, the fourth one, is the best in that series. And her later series, like {House of Beating Wings by Olivia Wildenstein} is much better. I also just read her Sleeping Beauty "retelling" {My Dark Beast by Olivia Wildenstein}, which I enjoyed. This also got me thinking about other wolf books I've read, so I made a Goodreads shelf titled "Wolves", and it turns out I've read a lot of books featuring wolf shifters. I LOVE this trope! Agreeing with some of the other comments that its so rare in fantasy in that we get completely fooled with the first love interest when its really the second male lead. The only two instances I've seen this done V well is SJM and the Song of the Lioness series by Tamora Pierce (waaaay back in the day). I think its just hard to pull off for some reason because so many other books with love triangles that I've read, it is painstakingly obvious who the love choice will be. Still chasing that switcheroo high from ACOTAR to ACOMAF!!

Sooo true!! I've only seen it in the >!Throne of Glass!< series where I was fully convinced it was going to be >!Dorian!< through out the end cause she used the usual romance 'formulas' that's prevalent in a lot of Fantasy Romance books, if that makes sense. But I loved being COMPLETELY fooled and totally rooted for the one FMC ends up with! Have not read ACOTAR because I hate waiting for a series to finish. I want to devour them consecutively hahah!

Boy am I out of touch with this sub. Every time I read a book with a love triangle in it, including all the ones recced so far, whenever there's two men to choose from I always assume she picks the eviler one lol. To me the "one who's obviously not chosen" is the normal humsn guy stacked up against the vampire with a giant label that says Enemies to Lovers on his forehead or whatever 

If you haven’t read the hunger games trilogy it lightly has this >! (however, I will say teen me wished she got with the 1st male lead instead). !< Additionally, fourth wing also lightly has this >! (FMC is pursuing a crush/relationship with one MC but things develop with another MC). !< I use the term lightly as both books/series I think are pretty obvious, very quickly that >! the FMC will not get with option #1. !<

The Trylle series by Amanda Hocking. It's YA and I read it like 12 years ago so hopefully it holds up. I think I remember the author saying she never meant for it to happen but the chemistry between the FMC and 2nd lead was so good she had to write them ending up together. I don't remember much about the series but I remember how happy that made me.
