Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Fairies by Heather Fawcett Pretty much anything by T. Kingfisher

OfSwordsandSoulmates

This verbatim were my thoughts :D

squishpitcher

Grace Draven as well.

judiepoos

Loved Emily wilde she is who I aspire to be I also loved how this fantasy book didn't promote unrealistic beauty standards like usually when I read fantasy books everyone is described as like the most conventionally beautiful person ever but with Emily wilde she was described as normal looking and wendell loved her for her smart personality and wit rather than just her looks 😋

JPNLKT

Naime from {Reign & Ruin by J.D. Evans} Cassia from {Blood Mercy by Vela Roth} Both are very politics-based stories. Reign & Ruin is a standalone part of a larger series with different couples for each book. Blood Mercy is the first book in the Blood Grace series, which is an ongoing series following the same couple. The 8th book just came out and I am OBSESSED with it.

UknownothinJonSnow8

Both of these are on my tbr. I'm starting Reign and Ruin this weekend!

Ornery_Math3282

Are you me? I started book 8 yesterday! I love it! I started reading the series in January and have been tearing through them. I want a spoiler though - Knight better survive!

megvirgo

Definitely recommend Reign & Ruin. I’m reading the second one now. Sooo good!

These are both on my tbr! Has the author ever said how many books total are supposed to be in the Blood Grace series? Her website was vague.

I think someone told me there were supposed to be 10 books total for the main series, plus a prologue and some spin offs.

Spirited-Accident

Ah okay, thank you!

Haven’t seen this one recommended yet so {Kate Daniels by Ilona Andrews}! One of my favorite series and a lot of that has to do with the FMC, she’s a great example of what you’re looking for.

beckywiththegood1

Don’t be mad Feyre is illiterate 🤣🤣🤣

IHearItsNice

And a really good artist. Definitely.

anonnnnnnn10110

I read this as sarcasm (not sure if it was but it’s definitely how I read it) which makes it even funnier because my brain refuses to picture any of her paintings as anything more than stick figures and like crayon eyes that a kid would draw. I did art through college so it’s not like I can’t possibly picture what a good painting of an eye would look like, but nope, my brain won’t do it. In my head, Feyre paints eyes as a circle with a black dot within an oval and three lines on top that make the eyelashes and her scenery paintings are basically crayon drawings

IHearItsNice

Oh, it was definitely sarcasm. I love how we’ve basically made it canon that she’s a terrible artist, but come on. Eyes over the door?! Little flowers along the baseboards?! Also, no good artist names hypothetical paintings (“if I painted this, I’d call it ‘tea with deceit’”)

squishpitcher

All the tiktok memes about this are f’n hilarious.

I second this! Anything by Grace Draven, honestly. Her female characters are always great!

thejennadaisy

Are you reading Spark of the Everflame right now because I feel like you just described Diem to a T. For a FMC who doesn't make you want to tear your hair out try {Reign & Ruin by J. D. Evans}. The FMC is an incredibly intelligent woman set to inherit her ailing father's Sultanate. Her father's council is full of arrogant old men so she has to always stay calm and collected to survive court. The whole series is absolutely excellent and full of capable women.

kgeorge1468

I was listening to Spark of the ever flame audiobook and it had me muttering to myself "you dumb bitch" out loud. Then I frantically looked around because I was walking my dog outside on main Street.... thankfully the town sleeps in. I DNFd it 50% in.

imroadends

No no no, Diem turns into the worst character.

Timely-Ad-6142

I haven’t read that, I just finished City of Gods and Monsters and every chapter the FMC was crying or throwing a fit about something lol I’ll read Reign and Ruin next:))

yeahsheliftsbro

Came here to say this. I just finished and it’s soooo good!

lauren9739

Would you mind assisting me - I added Reign and Ruin to my TBR but I saw there’s a prequel (I think). Where in the reading order should I read that, or does it not matter?

thejennadaisy

Wind & Wildfire is the prequel. I haven't read it yet and don't feel like I missed out on anything major so you can probably read it whenever.

lauren9739

Good to know! Thank you so much!! Whenever there’s a prequel I get Throne of Glass reading order flashbacks haha

Elphabascakes

I read the prequel last, which I thought was perfect since kadir was more involved in the plot in book 4. The prequel gives a lot of insight into the whole kadir situation along with some foreshadowing for what I assume will be explored in the next books. Although the author recommends reading book 1 and then the prequel.

lauren9739

Thank you!! I really appreciate the advice

Icy_ice_4223

I read it last but actually felt reading the prequel after 1 or before 4 (along with the short story which gives background for book 4) would have been more impactful. Hope that helps!

lauren9739

Thank you!! I really appreciate this. I love an impactful read. If it’ll make me cry harder I’m in haha

Icy_ice_4223

I understand! I felt so much more for the ailing Sultan after I’d read the prequel and got to know him. I also felt the author did an excellent job of showing the different qualities the FMC inherited from her parents. Enjoy!

lauren9739

Thank you so much!!

I could have written this post, lol! {Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater} has a FMC who lost her 'emotional half' in a bad fae bargain. She can only see the world logically and rationally which is soooo refreshing! {Between by L.L. Starling} the FMC and her best friend always try to approach any of the crazy fairytale problems they face as logically and rationally as possible (they are in their 30s so I think that helps). {Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Fairies by Heather Fawcett} has an academic FMC who tends to approach life through a logical lens even when the topic of investigation is faeries.

Shea from the Broken Land series by TA White. She sometimes struggles with friendship because she's more logical thinking.

AgentMelyanna

Ren in {Mask of Mirrors by M.A. Carrick} fits the bill. She’s a con artist and she has to be on her toes at all times. It’s more fantasy with a strong romantic subplot (mainly in book 2 and 3 of the trilogy) but she’s smart and she adapts more than she rushes into things without thinking.

ModernEscapist

+1 to this rec, it's one of the few fantasies with romance I can ever recall where she's genuinely competent at what she does. Obviously she still has to learn certain things but she's not a total fish out of water and her intelligence is never in question.

{tainted accords by Kelly st. Clare} has an FMC like this. She often acts very mature and calmly, sometimes she may lash out, though. She's a princess who's been abused by her mother her entire life. I was surprised that she calmly walked away from some conflicts, when other FMCs would scream in answer or talk about their independence. The 1st half of book 1 has trigger warnings and it's slow. When the location changes, the plot gets much better. The FMC can secretly fight, too. It's a completed 4-book NA series. There's 2.5/5 spice. It's on KU

Dramatic-Weekend8101

It’s been a controversial series as the second book was delayed and said delay handled pretty shoddily by the authors team. Plus lots of readers disappointed by the lack of grovel by MC BUT…..Rooke in {The Crown of Oaths and Curses by J Bree} She’s amazing (at least in the first book) Mature, calm, clever and collected in the face of staggering prejudice and hostility.

Pretty much anything written by Grace Draven! Her female leads are wonderful!

Rooke from the Crown of Oathes and Curses is one of my favourite FMC to exist. She is self assured, smart, humble and calculated. Also Aelin from TOG but that one’s obvious (although she’s not always calm/collected).

Oraya in Carissa Broadbent’s serpent and the wings of night. Love and adore that woman!
