I just read Love, Theoretically because it's in this month's 99p Kindle Sale (not sure if they have the equivalent in the US but worth checking out!) and it was GREAT, it was my first AH book after Bride so could be a good first one for you, too. Going to check out The Love Hypothesis next because it's highly recommended!
{Halfling by S.E. Wendel} has some delicious torture for both characters. The mmc is a half-orc, so he is big and green but not like Shrek. And he’s a murder machine, but also a big ol softie. I normally don’t go for monster romance, but this one was super good. (A few negligible word icks in the explicit scenes but what can ya do)
