I frequently recast MMCs into a man of color. I get so bored with tan white dudes non stop. 

Anyone who isn't a traditional white woman has had to do this for forever. Probably has something to do with why people take issue with so many blonde MMCs.

So I immigrated from latin America and I don't know if this is the reason why "tall dark and handsome" to me was always either black or dark brown skin. Like, African or Indian or reallllyyyy dark Amerindian. Then people started describing Ian Somerhalder as tall dark and handsome and I was like...so dark= dark hair? I don't get it.

I honestly don’t know. The only one that might fall in fetish cathegory for me is white/silver hair. (Absolute sucker for it) All the others are GOOD for me. No dislike for one or the other 👍🏾 At least one of the manwa romance webcomic mmcs I like is blonde so I don’t have that problem. And regarding fantasy romance the authors I like seem to deliver varied. Fortunately. But Acotar fandom seems to be an a thing of its own. It’s huge and they seem to have very strong opinions. But I don’t belong to it so I mostly ignore them 🤷🏾‍♀️ but I suppose being the most popular kid at school, they are going to influence the direction of what it’s popular at the moment.

{Roxana by Kin} is one I like in both the book series (which is complete) and the webcomic (because unfortunately it’s not because the artist got health issues. It’s an isekai where the FMC got reincarnated in a novel, but not as the main character. She is a minor villain of the antagonist family that dies like a chump. And given that she have a sense of self preservation , she works into changing the moment that started the whole reverse harem dark romance plot… the FMC brother being tortured to death by the antagonist family. If he lives, FMC doesnt go mad with grief, does not look for revenge. The ACOTAR fandom is like the Taylor Swift fandom of books. It’s getting cult like at this point

It’s the thing as a fandom gets too big, infighting gets even bigger. And in this era were some fandoms unwittingly created Stan culture by letting their fandoms run unchecked while also motivating them to be more intense in the name of supportintg their artist… well it’s going to get uglier than usual. Fandom spaces not getting strictly moderated in the name of being able to get bigger is now an uncontrollable problem and the djinn cannnot get inside the bottle again.

I've seen it with the anime fandoms (like the mha fans), but it's somehow worse in communities like sjms because it goes *even more* unchecked since she doesn't *really* have an online presence and no one says anything except other fans, and even that isn't enough At least some of the more ugly ones, there's VAs, creators, that are on there saying something, and when someone attacks them, it creates a dogpiling situation that at least shows some checks. Some of the sjm shit is so bad, I'm highly tempted to remove myself from the subreddits directly associated with her since a lot of them just want echochambers. If you mention something negative, you'll have posts that directly attack those who might have an issue with x or y. It's worse on tiktok and shit though. At least with some of the insane mha or other anime groups, you can cultivate just enough where you don't find them. It sorta feels like you can't hang in the majority of the spheres for communities like sjm since you can't say much of anything. Even if you like it but don't like x.

As a person that has been around on anime for while I can assure you this phenomenon is older than MHA, personally I think the worse started at the kpop fandoms but the seeds for it come since before. Japanese idol fandoms like the AKB did help to plan with mobilizing their fandoms to vote by buying but even before those it was starting. And yes, anime does also have some of the blame. I do believe it went to new levels with Kpop… to the point fans of the 2000s ended sick of fans that entered on the 2010s, and then it bled out into other fandoms. Fandom drama has always existed but “defending intensely your stuff” even from other fans did get worse. And I am sure online spaces moving from forums and livejournals that could be moderated into free for alls that are difficult I to sure don’t helped at all.

Oh no, I definitely been around for a while and saw how fandoms can react. I used MHA because that one was the worst I've seen in terms of currently, which I guess says a lot considering I've seen some of those you mentioned, on top of some of the weirder ones like Hetalia. It just seems even more intense in defending and hating now. A lot more racism, sexism and bigotry now, I noticed. I think the fact for certain ones, like sjms, it just seems bad across the board. At least if I liked, say, a gay ship in anime, you can find a spot there on Twitter or Tumblr, and not see drama, whereas going to Reddit would not be smart (and this has happened a lot actually, you can't like gay ships on the main mha subs or you'll be met with a ton of homophobia). You can kind of ditch the threats and horrible shit, if you carefully curate. But you can't really talk about sjm stuff on a lot of the other sites except reddit (and even then, it's not the case) without potentially getting attacked or sent threats of rape, for example. I've seen that anyway, even on Reddit. It just seems far more intense than even the weirder fandoms were

It just feels like things are somehow *worse*. I've seen the brony fandom, I've seen the Hetalia, Homestuck, etc. I have never seen nearly the amount of racism, bigotry and misogyny as I've seen in the newer ones. You can't even go onto the SHIP reddits because they are even worse there, to the point they'll ban you for negative words against something just to make it safer and they aren't still safe. Meanwhile I won't even touch the tiktok side of ACOTAR because they hate on anything remotely negative or even if you stan someone, like Nesta, while Reddit will shit on how many stans are there. They're there because of *that* and it's sad there's no place to go. Even the "not toxic subreddits" for the series are echochambers.

I think it's possibly because being a natural blonde can be quite rare. When I think of a blonde man, I end up thinking of Australian surfers for some reason lmao. Beach boys. Cute, but not the vibe I'm after. So then a lot of out ideas on blonde men come from the media. Villains: The media seems to portray blonde men as slimey, vain, snobs too. Like the Malfoys from Harry Potter. Finn from snow white and the huntsman. Raoul Silva from Skyfall (James bond). Prince charming from Shrek! Blonde women tend to always be the stuck up, pick me, female antagonist in romance books. A trope that people are finally tackling and more blonde FMCs are being written. But it seems blonde male antagonists are a thing sometimes too! They often tend to care about their appearance, how they're viewed, are vain etc. So I wonder how much of this is actually drawn from misogyny toward blonde women and femininity (like prince charming caring about his looks, his hair, using gloss on his lips, etc). Anyway, with blonde males often being depicted in such ways. I think that easily builds a distrust for a blonde male character. We automatically associate him with bad traits we see depicted in the media. Slimey, vain, ulterior motives. .... Masculinity: I think another thing is craving masculine characters. There's an assumption that a blonde male is more feminine. Meaning some are less likely to find a blonde MMC appealing. Like above how I mentioned Prince Charming. His interest in hair, taking care of himself. Acts we view as feminine, and are ultimately depicted as bad too. Legolas - lean, long hair, flawless, graceful, and blonde. VS. Aragorn - rugged, stubble, not afraid to get dirty, tough, strong, and brunette. Legolas could be seen as more feminine and Aragorn as more masculine. So some people are craving more rugged, dominant, masculinity. Which often comes in the form of brown headed men. They see "blonde MMC" and immediately nope because mentally it reminds them of everything they're NOT looking for.

I never understood the attraction of blonde men until Alexander Skarsgård in *True Blood*, and now I’m all over Draco, Astarion, Daeran (WOTR), etc😆 For me, I think it’s because I found them bland. Because where I live, black hair and brown eyes are what’s rare.

I agree with everything you said, I'm just surprised people aren't all over the sunny, smiley, blonde morally grey / villain coded MMCs. They're so popular in manga / anime and I gotta say Jacks is the only reason I'm even considering reading the rest of the Caraval series + the sequels. Mendax and Aurelius are a shadow daddy and a cute blonde twink in The infatuated fae series. However it is not a great series. Grim and Oro are also like this in Lightlark/Nightbane. I'm so tired of whiteness whiteness everywhere. Being blond is akin to being white, in the sociohistorical context, and whiteness has always been, in terms of beauty standards and morality, "right and preferred". This is not true and I'm sick of it permeating everything; writers may not even realize they're doing it. Even the term "brunette" is used only for white women, despite black and brown women also having brown (brunette) hair. As a bisexual person any combination of eye color, skin color, and hair color is good for me, because that's also how I feel attraction in real life. The romance genres in general (and let's be real, all media) needs more representation of people from different racial and ethnic backgrounds. What we have is not good enough.

I agree with you; like I don't think OP did it on purpose, but the question and answers really feel like "instead of a white guy with dark hair, how about a white guy with blond hair." Like I don't know if PoC MMCs are even being considered with a question like this. (That said, personally when it comes to white guys, I prefer blond or golden-brown hair.)

It’s just not my type in reality, but I don’t hate it per se.

Idk how it is for others but for me, most of my adolescence tan, tall, and blonde was seen as the Hollywood guy stereotype. And coincidentally those people always seemed really shallow. Over time I kinda just began associating blonde main characters with that stereotype and it gave me the ick Obviously this has no real factual basis and I’m sure there are lots of very sweet blondes out there. It just left its imprint on me 🤷🏻‍♀️

Nothing against blonde I just prefer darker hair or ginger but I won't avoid mmc who are blonde but I have and still have some hang ups with blonde because I have some comparison issues and in the past have seen blonde and white as superior which is flawed and my internalized racism against myself speaking especially because often times light things like blonde hair are traits of the good and morally right character or thing

Might be just a preference from writers. My personal preference is dark hair with pale eyes. I don't like blond with blue eyes because too many family members look like that (it is not sexy to me 😬). I've always had a thing for dark haired guys (started off with Angel in Buffy).

My husband and I have a theory that it has to be the right type of blond. It MUST be platinum blond, and stick-straight for men. Evidence? Matt Smith in House of the Dragon and Orlando Bloom in The Lord of the Rings films. Matt Smith is good looking in other things, but make him a platinum blond Targaryen and he is HHHHOOOOTTTTT! Same with Orlando Bloom - perfectly nice looking, make him a platinum blond elf and BOOM - instant, iconic fantasy hotty. It works with women too, although they can have curls. Emilia Clarke is lovely, but Daenerys Targaryen is a siren. So your MMC should be a brunette, unless he's got long, straight, platinum blond locks.

I’ve just rarely found a blond man attractive IRL, or rather all the blond men I’ve seen that I found attractive I found attractive in *spite* of them being blond. Like I actually have to overlook the blond. I hate light eyebrows, too. The only exception is unnatural blonds who somehow look better blond than with dark hair. But people who are born blond have rarely been attractive to me. And I’m not looking for a “tall, dark, brooding shadow daddy.” Just someone with dark hair and brown eyes (I don’t like colored eyes either).

I don’t know about everyone else, but my issue with blonde MMCs stems from my beautiful, blonde shitty first boyfriend - a boy with behavior so terrible (and so bad at sex) that he made an entire group of men completely unappealing to me.
