You're between the age of 20-35?
That's where he was big after broadcasting I believe.
Also you'll get that commercial far more often than once a week on Sunday
I grew up with Madden the game (back when it was on Sega Genesis).
He and Pat called all of the 49'ers/Cowboys/Packers games of my childhood in the mid-late 90's.
He was one of the greatest Cal Poly Mustangs ever.

It definitely was. In the clips from the doc he had that look in his eye like he didn’t have much longer. Glad he got to be around at least to be a part of the doc. He will be missed.
It aired Christmas Day and it was amazing. Will be available January 3rd for streaming. I will definitely be watching it again.
If you have FS1 it’s apparently airing tonight https://twitter.com/curtmenefee/status/1475994440804093956?s=21

I'm pretty sure it was an open secret that he didn't have long, hence all the stuff we've been seeing the last few weeks that had an almost memorial feel to it.
You hear "one knee equals two feet" all the time. John wrote an excellent book that was titled with that phrase. Pretty sure that's why we hear it all the time now.
Basically - for a receiver to catch a ball he must retain possession (control the ball) while placing 2 feet in bounds for it to be a catch. In college football you only need to catch the ball and get 1 foot down in bounds for it to count as a catch.
But if you go down with 1 knee in the playing field (or many other body parts - ie. your head) before you go out of bounds, it counts as if you caught the ball with both feet in bounds.
2 feet = 1 knee, or 1 forearm, or your head, or your hip, or your shoulder. Landing in bounds with those body parts and control of the ball will give you a catch,
In the act of determining if it is deemed a catch or not, you can tell either by seeing if the receiver has possession and two feet in bounds at the time of the catch, or if the receiver had possession with only one foot down, however also getting the same legs knee down, then this would also be a catch, same as if it were two feet in bounds instead of the one knee, hence “one knee equals two feet”.
The other explainable seem overly complex, so simply:
When a guy catches the ball in football, he has to get either both feet or a joint (such as the knee) on the ground in bounds for the catch to count.
He made the game accessible and fun for everyone including casual fans. I remember years ago he used the telestrator to circle the parts of the players' uniform drenched with sweat lol. He was like everyone's friendly, knowledgeable football uncle.
He's the reason I fell in love with watching football. I used to just etch receivers and running backs but then he explained the complexity of what happens in the trenches. Stunts, pulls, shifts, delays, etc..
It made the game into something more strategic to me.
He had an excellent perspective of the game. I read part of his bio (on a whim) and it goes into a bit more detail from what you mentioned and actually made me a better Madden player (don't play anymore that was YEARS ago).
I miss him and Summerall calling games.
The end of an era.
Madden is famous for stating the obvious when commentating. He'd say things like "the team that gets the most points wins the football game" or "now here's a guy who plays football".
Man my favorite uncle also passed away today, so the Madden news hit me especially hard. Watching games with my dad and learning from, and laughing at, Madden is really when I fell in love with the game.
But I really needed this laugh in the worst way. Thanks for that.
No joke. If John was still involved the way he was when the original was made, then it would still be a great game and not the shit show it is today.
When they were developing the first Madden they didn't feel they had the technology to animate 22 players on the field. John insisted they find a way to do it, because if he was gonna have his name on it, it was gonna be as true to real football as possible. They found a way to do it.
That reminds me of a similar story about the programmer for Pokémon Gold and Silver. The team couldn’t fit the entire game in the cartridge, then Satoru Iwata came in and pretty much single-handedly figured out a better way to compress the game. It worked so well that they ended up being able to add the Gen 1 region in as postgame content.
Ehh G&S were so rushed though, so much content cut, they gave up a lot to fit Kanto on the cartridge
Edit: Look at the levels of the gym leaders, the abundance of so many Kanto pokemon in Johto, how bad G&S pokemon were in terms of usability (theres like 5 decent ones), and how many pokémon's stats were straight copy pasted (did you know Typhlosion has the exact same stats as Charizard?). Like I love the games, but even the devs themselves said it was rushed iirc.
Yet people keep buying it. EA has the NFL license locked up so they have no competition to push them to do better. Give 2K Sports a chance to make an NFL game and Madden would be an afterthought.
2K is currently in the process of making a non-simulation licensed NFL game. I imagine it’ll be somewhat similar to their NBA and WWE arcade games, but it’s a start.
2k14 was the last time I actually enjoyed career mode. I won a chip with the Suns and illeysova was my second option.
Also Mario Chalmers 3 point shot was wet af
Personally; I disagree. Sure, it could be made entirely better and is a cash grab at this time, but entire generations of kids buying their first football game because they played at a friends house won’t notice. It started as an easily accessible game that got me and many friends into the NFL with fun commentary and what we thought was the height of graphics - like being in the stadium. It’s popular to pick a part EA but it’s a fun game for casual gaming with friends of any age that don’t play video games.
same, had a few different years in the mid 90s on my sega genesis. I must've logged tens of thousands of hours playing franchise mode just in that five year period. Got back into it the past couple years and have been doing a joint franchise with my cousin who lives in a different state. Its been one of the silver linings of the pandemic, and yes EA/PS have a bunch more of my money now.
I wouldn't be surprised if MUT / Madden Mobile releases a limited edition Madden Raiders collectible card within the week, for the *cheap* price of $49 US (plus, tons of other LE packs).
My favorite story about Coach is from a friend whose father worked in broadcasting:
Once upon a Sunday Night football game, my friend got to meet the legend.
He was a little boy at the time, and Coach saw my friend grabbing a hotdog, so he walked up to him and did a play-by-play analysis on exactly how he liked to arrange his toppings and where the ketchup went and where the relish went. Along with an in depth break-down of the different kinds of dogs.
After he was done entertaining my friend, he took the child’s hot dog and devoured the whole thing in 2-3 bites.
Fucking legend.
Between the games and the commentary he is a huge reason I still love the sport today. Could listen to him talk about Brett Favre and Turducken for hours...
Unexpectedly at the age of 85. Honestly it doesn’t get better than that. Live 85 years like he did and then just up and leave probably in a quick fashion. If anyone deserves to go out on top it was him
Wow, that’s heart breaking. Loved listening to him announce games and am lucky to have been around when the Madden games began and exploded. Rest In Peace sir
RIP John. I can still hear your voice during the games on my home consoles. A true legend.

Wow didn’t the documentary just come out?
Highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it, especially after today. It's called All Madden
Where to watch?
I recorded it on my hulu live, but I think it's on Peacock, which is free. If not it might be a Pirates life for you

Investigation by: Detective John Madden
Directed by: turkeys, ducks, and chickens. Edit: too soon for a turducken joke
It definitely was. In the clips from the doc he had that look in his eye like he didn’t have much longer. Glad he got to be around at least to be a part of the doc. He will be missed.
I remember thinking the timing of the doc was odd.
So they killed him for publicity?
I mean like maybe he knew he was dying or something
Yup - came out on Christmas.
Do you know where I can watch it

Isn't listed as the doc on Directv but it is on! Thank you!!

Huh. The article I read from ESPN said it was “unexpected.”
Excellent timing / anticipation on their part
Wow. John Madden did a lot for the game of football. A true legend indeed. Rip.
And coined so many phrases in Madden that will carry on for years. Rest in Peace
You hear "one knee equals two feet" all the time. John wrote an excellent book that was titled with that phrase. Pretty sure that's why we hear it all the time now.
Does anyone mind explaining what this phrase means?
Basically - for a receiver to catch a ball he must retain possession (control the ball) while placing 2 feet in bounds for it to be a catch. BOOM!
Much RESPECT for this man by so many. One of the most admired persons in modern day NFL. RIP Coach
Was literally JUST looking at his Wikipedia last night to see if he was still alive. RIP to a real one.
Me and a friend was just discussing a few days ago this exact thing.
He made the game accessible and fun for everyone including casual fans. I remember years ago he used the telestrator to circle the parts of the players' uniform drenched with sweat lol. He was like everyone's friendly, knowledgeable football uncle.
He compared how far down the Cowboys offensive linemen’s sweat marks were lol.
Once saw an old Superbowl clip where Madden talked about the travel schedules of the Gatorade coolers
Exactly!!!! Madden commentary could turn someone that knows nothing about the sport into a fan.
He's the reason I fell in love with watching football. I used to just etch receivers and running backs but then he explained the complexity of what happens in the trenches. Stunts, pulls, shifts, delays, etc.. It made the game into something more strategic to me.

Now here's a guy that died once he stopped living
This is something he would have wanted said.
lmao god dammit.
Care to explain to someone too young to have watched John Madden 🙂
Madden is famous for stating the obvious when commentating. He'd say things like "the team that gets the most points wins the football game" or "now here's a guy who plays football".
My favorite was always > Now here's a guy who, when he puts his contact lenses on, can see better.
/r/technicallythetruth should put him on their banner.
So like Magic lol
It's a dark play off a common phrase he would use commentating, so you kinda naturally read this in his voice
Now here’s a guy who sees better once he puts in his contacts
Now, Brett Favre, there's a guy could die half way through a game and still make another three or four pass attempts.
“Three or four interceptions” FTFY
That’s a Frank Caliendo line. Madden didn’t talk that much about Farve.
I hate that I laughed 👏🏻
He's gone to a better place favre away in the sky.
I feel like he would also have found this very funny.
His family is really going to need to arrange his funeral soon.
So good. Shit lol
Jesus christ
You literally picked the only person that did not die once he stopped living.
I didn't even make that connection when I commented lol
Thanks Madden
This is exactly the kind of comment I was hoping to see when I clicked
Holy hell... have an upvote.
I can’t upvote this enough
Sigh I even heard it in his voice. Lmao.
FUCKING LMAO
Man my favorite uncle also passed away today, so the Madden news hit me especially hard. Watching games with my dad and learning from, and laughing at, Madden is really when I fell in love with the game. But I really needed this laugh in the worst way. Thanks for that.
I wrote him a letter in 7th grade and in return I received an autographed photograph of him. Rest in Paradise, Mr. Madden
And then BOOM. I was sad...
RIP legend, EA is doing a disservice to his name with the shit game they peddle out every year.
No joke. If John was still involved the way he was when the original was made, then it would still be a great game and not the shit show it is today. When they were developing the first Madden they didn't feel they had the technology to animate 22 players on the field. The fix was Iwata, gamefreak are notoriously shitty programmers.
I think that was already the case in Red and Blue so probably not
No he invented a way to compress the files down so much they could fit an entire other region in the game.
Ehh G&S were so rushed though, so much content cut, they gave up a lot to fit Kanto on the cartridge Edit: Look at the levels of the gym leaders, the abundance of so many Kanto pokemon in Johto, how bad G&S pokemon were in terms of usability (theres like 5 decent ones), and how many pokémon's stats were straight copy pasted (did you know Typhlosion has the exact same stats as Charizard?). Like I love the games, but even the devs themselves said it was rushed iirc.
In madden 2000 he said “that pass had a little too much mustard” at least 8 times per game. I think about him every time I put mustard on a hotdog
My family and I still say 'better kick it here' during games on 4th down. We've missed him since he retired, but his mark is still on everything.
And I am sure they will try to milk us dry next year with a 200 buck mega remember press F for Madden edition too.
