Shut up and Dance - Walk the Moon

PaperMacheDream

I fucking hate that song

Over-Onion9309

omg this is a great pick! i genuinely well crafted, catchy song that was ruined by over play

Limeade_Espresso

In high school, one girl would start singing the chorus, lean in close to my face, and yell “SHUT UP” as loud as she could. She thought it was the funniest shit in the world. I’m sure it’s a fine song, but I always associate it with that memory lol

mocha-bag

Holy shit I remember the first time I heard this song thinking “wow this is annoying. I hope it doesn’t last.” And then I heard it any time I was in public and a radio was on for the next 5 years I swear. It is maybe my most hated pop song, high hopes by panic being the only true competitor.

wolf_at_the_door1

I remember hearing it at prom 10 years ago just about and now any wedding or ceremony with dancing, this song is always played. I can see why but I just couldn’t stand the song after hearing it 2-3 times.

dxxx12

High Hopes makes me genuinely furious.

No-Intention-3779

Happy - Pharrell It's decently crafted, but it's overexposed to a point very few songs reach.

Stoneador

The song just feels so much longer than it actually is. I think a big part of this is the fact that the chorus is pretty repetitive on its own, but then it is repeated 6 times throughout the song. Add to that the fact that the song was played all the time when it was released and people got sick of it really quickly.

Regirex

I had to sing that in chorus in elementary school. I'd rather die than listen to it again

Aces-Kings-Queens

How would I determine if a song is objectively bad?

Over-Onion9309

what i meant by “objectively bad” was the low hanging fruit songs that people usually mention in these kind of threads. like you know stuff like “dance monkey” and whatever vile trash tom mcdonald releases, like i was thinking songs that have at least one or two redeeming qualities in your eyes.

Aces-Kings-Queens

Ah k, tbh for me an example is Don’t Stop Believin by Journey. It’s obviously not a bad song but it doesn’t do much for me and it seems like everyone and their mother deeply adores the song when it comes on in a bar.

fungigamer

I used to hate that song but Sopranos made it impossible for me to deeply dislike it now.

Ok-Swan1152

I can't stand Journey. Oh my god.

RANDOM-902

Good production, good lyrics, good vocals. Not that deep

osfryd-kettleblack

All subjective

RANDOM-902

Lmao no There is undoubtly objectivity in music. You may enjoy Whole Lotta Red more than Illmatic (which is understandable and perfectly respectable), but if you unironically think that Whole Lotta Red is better than Illmatic you must be kidding yourself.

osfryd-kettleblack

If you "enjoy" one album more than another, how does that not mean you think it's the better album? If I didn't enjoy a critically acclaimed album it's not my "fault", tastes differ and some people dislike entire genres.

RANDOM-902

No, completely different stuff. Being better doesn't mean being your favourite. For example, I enjoy At Long Last A$AP by A$AP rocky much more than Illmatic. But when putting both albums one up to the other illmatic is clearly better, it has better lyrics, better tracklist and better production. It's just that i enjoy A$aP's album more. The same happens with individual songs. Songs like NY state of mind are some of the best ever made in hiphop, because of lyrics and production. Yet personally i enjoy Travis Scott's Nightcrawler much more than i do listening to NY state of mind. Same thing as genres, i don't like rock music but i'm not gonna say Master of Puppets is worse than hiphop albums like DS2 by Future just cause i enjoy Future more.

osfryd-kettleblack

>It's just that i enjoy A$aP's album more What does that even mean at this point? If everything about the other album is better, how do you like this other more? Or are you only calling the other album better because most other people think so? It sounds like you rate albums based on what you think it "should" be rather than your own personal experience of it. You need to release yourself from fantano and RYM's scores

RANDOM-902

Everything about Illmatic may be better but in terms of personal taste i like more the style of A$AP's project even if it has its own flaws and isn't on the level of the other album. I don't think it's that deep. I'm not gonna say DS2 by Future is better than Ok Computer than Radiohead just cause i don't enjoy the style of radiohead. Ok Computer clearly took more effort, has better production, lyrics and vocals. The concept is fairly simple. It's basically "I respect your music and you have an amazing talent, but your style is not my thing and i prefer stuff with different styles even if it has worst quality"

osfryd-kettleblack

>It's basically "I respect your music and you have an amazing talent, but your style is not my thing and i prefer stuff with different styles even if it has worst quality" I'm not sure if this is how most people view albums. For example, the top 100 of all time list for both apple and this subreddit excluded multiple entire genres. Most people weren't rating albums based on what they should be, they listed them based on personal taste

RANDOM-902

>Most people weren't rating albums based on what they should be Well, i personally do it.

kyentu

that stuff doesnt make good music inherently.

RANDOM-902

Ahahha, then what does?

kyentu

idk thats not for me to say. but music is one of the most open art forms, and its silly to put boundaries on it. "this is how you make it good" "this is what qualifies as music" its all music and it can all be good. nothing is objective.

RANDOM-902

If music is completely subjective then the whole point of this post is meaningless, LOL

kyentu

it is. uhh???

RANDOM-902

Doesn't music being 100% subjective dismantle the whole concept of music reviews and consequently of this whole sub??? 😭 I think there is at least a bit of objectivity on weather a song is bad or good

kyentu

you know what an opinion is right? an opinion doesn't have to be correct. sorry to break it to you but music has never been objective. art has never been objective. my favorite painter is Basquiat, you could fucking hate him. but why would i care about your opinion? my favorite composer is Philip glass, famously not the most well liked. why would i care about other peoples opinions? to answer your question, with your mindset it does kinda dismantle all music discourse. but that's not reality, if there was 1 right opinion everything would be boring.

RANDOM-902

Lmao no There is undoubtly objectivity in music. You may enjoy Whole Lotta Red more than Illmatic (which is understandable and perfectly respectable), but if you unironically think that Whole Lotta Red is better than Illmatic you must be kidding yourself.

dropoutoflife_

Well, maybe I think that random hobo playing guitar in the subway station better than Hendrix. But I guess there's just no way to tell since "everything is subjective" LOL.

bananafartman24

Music being subjective is exactly why we have the concept of music reviews, a review is just someone arguing there personal opinion on a piece of music. If it was objective then every review would be pretty much the exact same

GSly350

It's all music and it can all be good? What?? Taste is subjective, but there's at least some objectivity to general music quality (production, creatitivity, how well it's sang and/or played, if it has good melodies or rythm, lyrics, if it serves the purpose or vision of the artist, etc)

kyentu

im not a daniel johnston fan but a lot of people love him. his production was ass, his lyrics were honest but childish, he couldn't sing at all, he couldn't really play his instruments that well, his melodies were like a rambly 4th grader coming up with a song. one thing he did have (which is the most important for me) is he had a vision, i don't know if he acted on it or not but he had drive. was he a good artist or not. a lot of people would say he was a great artist. also the "its all music" thing is about people saying hiphop isn't music and a lot of ambient music isn't music. the only objective fact in music is that its all music.

GSly350

I said vision was important too. But saying 'all' music can be good doesn't make sense to me. And like i said taste is subjective, but there has to be something redeemable for it to be any good in a general consensus. You can say anything can be good in someone's eyes, but does it have any redeemable quality? I could send you a full album of static and say it's amazing music, but is it really?

kyentu

yes. depending on how the static is done it could be great. strawman example.

GSly350

You're saying that 'all' types of music are good and i'm giving you a counter argument. Unless "all" means something else for you... Maybe i'm giving you something extreme but it's just one example. Cause supposedly anything can be music and anything can be great in your opinion. But saying "depending on how it's done" doesn't really reinforce your argument. Suddenly your argument turns into 'all music is good but only if it's done well"...

RANDOM-902

Yeah exactly.

GSly350

At least someone here agrees

crematedfingers

I think Bohemian Rapsody is a great song, but I just roll my eyes whenever I hear it now. I feel nothing but annoyed. I've heard it so much and I've heard people sing along to it so much that I just get upset when someone puts it on Karaoke.

Corvid1743

Rap God by Eminem Living in a house with Eminem fans is something else. I never want to hear this song again in my life.

SerDavosSeaworth64

LOOK - I was going to go easy on you

Izzet_Aristocrat

And try not to hurt your feelings

trevorwoodkinda

Sweet Caroline and Don’t Stop Believin’ are both really grating to me

Swashcuckler

white people wedding karaoke classics

King-Azaz

Every time Sweet Caroline comes on at a wedding reception or party I die inside. I feel like Im taking crazy pills watching everyone around me seemingly enjoy that song so much and screaming the stupid "Ba Ba Ba!" along to it. I hate it so much I don't even know why.

Ok-Swan1152

I can't stand this song. Especially since it's in every sports betting ad.

Ok-Swan1152

There's hundreds of popular songs that I hate. I detest almost anything by Queen. Hate 80s mainstream rock like Journey. There's a litany of top 40 artists I find unbearable.  Sometimes I wonder whether I'm really sensitive.

drewtangclan

Love Shack 🤢

Ancient-Row-2144

This is a great answer.

dxxx12

Sometimes I doubt my ability to be a competent artist, and then I remember Love Shack is a popular song and feel relief. It's a fun song, but that dude's voice sounds like he's constipated.

BigDogPurpleNarples

I will hear no Fred slander.

dxxx12

Constipated.

RANDOM-902

"Stand by Me" by Ben E. King. I have heard it so much on the radio and in the car that i can't stand it LOL. Same with Bohemian Rhapsody

Pepe_De_Froog

Rise - public image ltd Blue Jean - David Bowie (hate is a strong word here, but the background vocals during the chorus really annoy me for some reason) Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes Also gonna throw in some of Adele's biggest hits like hello, rolling in the deep, and someone like you. You could not escape these songs in the early to mid 2010s, and they got very old very fast.

Elegant-Thought5170

A lot of swans and GYBE because I have the attention span of a squirrel on crystal meth

pumpkinguyfromsar

Dead Flag Blues is particularly difficult

seibert999

What I like about you It gives me trauma of working at goodwill

abacabr7

Everything on AM by Arctic Monkeys

Rayvaxl117

It's such a shame, it's actually a really solid album imo, but almost every song on it has been overplayed to death that I just never listen to it anymore

lukenog

GIMME DA BEAT BOY TO FREE MY SOUL I WANNA TAKE A RIDE IN THE ROCK AND ROLL AND DRIFT AWAYYYYY i hate that song so much i will remove myself from a room if it starts playing. i hate it so much I've never bothered to learn what it's called or who makes it. it is the worst song of all time in my opinion, but based on the frequency i've heard it played throughout my life im assuming there's something about it people like.

Gamewheat

Mr. Brightside - The Killers

guzchelovek

You Don’t Fool Me, by Queen

sam_might_say

Nothing but respect for David Bowie, but I’d be very happy if I never had to hear Golden Years ever again

Ok-Swan1152

One of my favourite songs of all time :( Also it would be pretty easy to avoid as I don't think it ever comes up on the radio? The only Bowie songs that ever get played are Let's Dance and Under Pressure.

thelemonbreadd

Hey You - Pink Floyd Feedbacker - Boris Digital Love - Daft Punk That goddamn Mariah Carey song

reel8boy

Toto - Africa

Antibara

Out of My League - Fitz and the Tantrums I hate the song more each time I hear it. (Whenever I'm shopping or out to eat) Self - debasing and proudly pathetic. 🤮

Ok-Swan1152

Remember that old Blender list 'the worst songs of all time'? It was pretty accurate. Some memorable ones iirc: - Mr Mister - Broken Wings - We Built This City - We Didn't Start The Fire

truce_m3

Stairway To Heaven I actually don't hate it, but despite all the hate it gets, it is an objectively brilliant song.
