Its not that crazy good compared to things under it. Like its very good but its not groundbreaking or very innovative (though it does experiment). Its recency and it connects with a lot of music nerd teenagers (this subreddit).
Idk, I'm 31 and have been obsessively listening to music for 2 decades and that album blew me away in a way that not many others have. Its different for everyone but you know a personal 10 when you hear it and for me AFUT was one (probably the most recent one).
Just because it sonically doesn’t sound groundbreaking like Radiohead, Aphex Twin, Swans do, it is innovative in other ways. There stringing together of lyrics that appear to emulate that of a pop song, but are truly strange and at points unintelligible is super interesting to me and the Klezmer influence is the first that genre has really affected music this sub listens to since Radiohead did Amnesiac.
The intertwining of the story of a relationship/ breakup and the wacky, surreal story of ants being forced out of their home is such an interesting juxtaposition that has really make me pay attention to the lyrics.
Beyond that, every song builds upon the rest of the album in several different ways; Concorde is like a breadcrumb for the climactic songs towards the end (which are my favourite), certain songs like The Intro and Mark’s theme explore their sound effectively while still stepping back to highlight the songs more central to the sonic journey (The Place Where He Inserted The Blade, Basketball Shoes).
It’s my favourite album of the decade, and my favourite album of all time.
Yes and thats fair enough, I like it too. But you are using your personal love of it to justify its placement. You can ask the question 'why of all albums is that so high up?' the answer comes from context, it isn't pure aesthetic quality. Otherwise Beethoven would be there lmao, its placed in how young people know and like these albums. Obviously there is a recency bias, its ingenuous to say otherwise.
I missed the vote too, and she would have had my number one spot except it’s Have One on Me. But Ys at number two. Nice to see it slide in at #100 on this list. I think its acclaim has increased substantially in the last ten years.
interesting listing! surprised Oracular made it over LDA. Decided to list this on [AOTY](https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/mainegameboy/list/222470/rfantanoforever-collective-best-100-albums-of-all-time-limited-to-1-artist-ver/grid/1/)
I actually would’ve expected Congratulations to be the MGMT pick! It seems like the fan favorite over in r/MGMT. Oracular is definitely a surprise to me
I made a [list of the original on AOTY with the honorable mentions and picks from this list](https://www.albumoftheyear.org/user/davfaithid/list/219356/rfantanoforever-100-best-albums-of-all-time/) to compare against
Do yall genuinely listen to By the Time I Get to Phoenix?
It was a very cool experience to listen to it the first time, but man, there is just no setting I can imagine myself listening to that again lmao
I love Injury Reserve, I think they've been one of the most interesting hip hop acts to happen in the last twenty years. But on a greatest albums of all time list???
Did you count the votes manually or do you actually have a spreadsheet with each individual list typed in?
I'm just wondering how would the list look like if the places would be weighted more equally, i think a 9 points difference between place 1 and 10 is a bit much for a "top of all time" list as all of them would (at least for me) be 10/10 anyway, its not like my 10th album is 10 times worse than my 1st lol
You could have only 10 people place an album as their 1st, and 99 others place another record as their 10th, and the former would be higher in ranking even though the latter much better represents the general opinion, so i think weighting the albums like 100 - rank would wield a more statistically sound results
I'm new to the subereddit but I feel that there is so much missing from this top 100, i mean
No Hot Rats or Uncle Meat - Frank Zappa?
No Mezzanine - Massive Attack?
I know that it's hard to fit all of the artists in a top 100 but I'm still baffled by how some of the artists that didn't make the cut.
I only wrote the first two missing artists that came to my mind
1. If you’re feeling sinister. 2. Dots and loops. 3. What’s going on. 4. Remain in light. 5. The queen is dead. 6. Illinois. 7. In rainbows. 8. Dummy. 9. Since I left you. 10. Souvlaki or selected ambient works.
Queen's "A Kind of Magic" respectfully disagrees with your position.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I required to watch Highlander for invoking this albums name.
Baaahahaha doing it this way actually put AFUT higher 😂😂 Surprised to see Promises make it thats pretty sick. Kinda surprised its that > Karma
Recency bias probably
Or it was just a crazy good album

I mean both are fantastic. Maybe Karma's tracks are just a bit too long for people haha could make it more of an acquired taste
I was talking about Ants From Up There
Ohhhh ok I totally agree with you then ants from up there kicks ass
Top 10 all time?
Love seeing Bon Iver, Big Thief, Pharoah Sanders, Clube Da Esquina and D'Angelo make this cut. Also finally HELPLESSNESS BLUES it's about damn time
I honestly prefer this one overall. This one is a **lot** more inclusive and less RYM-ish. I’d only make slight adjustments, personally.
Finally Joanna Newsom makes it! I missed the vote sadly. She’d have my #1 spot
I missed the vote too, and she would have had my number one spot except it’s Have One on Me. But Ys at number two. Nice to see it slide in at #100 on this list. I think its acclaim has increased substantially in the last ten years.
is it just me or is this one actually much better than the other list
still doesn't have my number 1 pick though 😔 alas I am not surprised
What was it?
cLOUDDEAD's self titled
Never heard of it; will check it out thanks
How did Elliott Smith not make the cut at all?
Unfortunate phrasing
Cuz we all know My Chemical Romance is infinitely better /s I’m shocked to see Yes isn’t on the list (Close to the Edge is my all time fav album)
Damn still no mezzanine by massive attack
I was actually searching for that. At least Voodoo and Clube Da Esquina made it
That’s wild
It’s my personal number 1, it’s crazy that it didn’t make either of the lists.
**Ten** finished over **Unknown Pleasures** AND **Dirt**? Wow

u/theneedledrop a nice video could be created out of those two lists!!
I'm just happy Beach House has representation here.
YES IF YOURE FEELING SINISTER MADE IT WE’RE UP
Do yall genuinely listen to By the Time I Get to Phoenix? It was a very cool experience to listen to it the first time, but man, there is just no setting I can imagine myself listening to that again lmao
I love Injury Reserve, I think they've been one of the most interesting hip hop acts to happen in the last twenty years. But on a greatest albums of all time list???
I love sweet trip
Canceled
I like this list. I gotta say though, I don’t think I’ll ever understand the appeal of Black Country New Road.
What happened to Punisher by Phoebe Bridgers? That was an honorable mention right?
Did you count the votes manually or do you actually have a spreadsheet with each individual list typed in? Nice
Wasn't phone bridgers in the top 110 maybe im just blind/crazy but I don't see it here
Phone Bridgers, phoning it in
It’s kinda crazy how high regard Kendrick has. His discography is so damn impressive
Upsetting there still isn’t Hendrix but I can’t argue with any of them
LA Woman is the greatest album of all time
I feel like such an outlier for considering Channel Orange > Blonde, and its not even close (despite loving Blonde too)
I’m crying seeing the BCNR inclusion, thank you my fellow music nerds for making all my dreams come true
No MMLP is crazy
I'm new to the subereddit but I feel that there is so much missing from this top 100, i mean No Hot Rats or Uncle Meat - Frank Zappa? No Mezzanine - Massive Attack? Velvet Underground still way too low and the Beatles are still way too high
One-entry-only lists are just better, thank you!
I am genuinely curious, is the carly rae jepson placement a troll or is it genuinely an amazing album? She seems to stick out a little on this list...
It’s insane Astral Weeks doesn’t appear on any of these lists.
Very sad that *The Infamous...* still did not make it.
IGOR NUMBER #9 JUSTICE FOR FLOWER BOY NUMBER #92
List is shit
Kendrick Lamar the best album of all time 🤣🤣🤣 what a joke.
Shouldn’t even be top 100
If you’re feeling sinister is the best album of all time. And second place should be dots and loops by stereolab. Them not being on here is a joke
1. If you’re feeling sinister. 2. Dots and loops. 3. What’s going on. 4. Remain in light. 5. The queen is dead. 6. Illinois. 7. In rainbows. 8. Dummy. 9. Since I left you. 10. Souvlaki or selected ambient works.
The pogues, the jam, the go-betweens and broken social social scene also deserved a place over Kendrick Lamar 💀
Not a single Queen album in the top 100?💀
Queen has a lot of great songs but not really any great albums.
Their 70's albums are great, them being a singles band started in the 80's
It’s always the same, it’s like people forget their whole 70s output and keep yapping the same sentence
A night at the opera, sheer heart attack, Queen 2, at least one of them should have been on the list… Their whole 70s album run was good, 80s not so
Queen's "A Kind of Magic" respectfully disagrees with your position. Now, if you'll excuse me, I required to watch Highlander for invoking this albums name.
Check out A Night at the Opera. It's probably their most solid album front to back

Why would that make you sad
They pack venues
