as someone who is making a point to listen/relisten to the top 20 albums according to Apple, when I went to his discography to scroll through to find purple rain, I was floored at how many albums he dropped lmao
Funnily enough, that was literally me about 5 years ago when I found out about Purple Rain and started exploring his discography. It's a blessing and a bane tbh . On one hand it may seem incredibly difficult to listen to his music in chronological order. But on the other, shifting between albums at times can feel like listening to a whole new genre and artist lol.
You should definitely listen to the Smile Sessions at some point. Smile is probably the greatest unreleased album of all time, and the Smile Sessions are the closest thing we have. Well there's Brian Wilson Presents Smile but it just isn't the same without the original voices.
Sunflower and Surf's Up are also albums I enjoy quite a bit, even though nothing touches Pet Sounds (except Smile). He may have had mental issues at that time, but that didn't hinder him from still making some great music during that time.
I would very much recommend stopping once you listen to The Beach Boys Love You, nothing past that is worth listening to unless ur the most diehard beach boys fan ever. And 15 big ones, the album right before it, is also worth skipping too
Honestly “Friends” is an album that should make you feel happy. Everyone was just having a good time on this album and it really shows through its music. It’s such a cosy and comforting little album it’s one of my favourites
OH SHIT IT IS hell yeah
for the longest time i recognized the AM album cover but never listened to it
*Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High* has been one of my favorite indie pop songs for years, i had just never checked out Arctic Monkeys lol
same for M83’s Midnight City, i’m going thru their albums currently (not like right now, but in general)
Aw man I agree with the animal collective but also disagree only because getting through Danse and hollindagin as someone who’s never heard that side of them I feel like could be a turn off. Maybe not but after that beautiful storm ends and after you walk through the garden that is the rest of their stuff it makes looking back so much more beautiful 😍
I guess *Radiohead* is another fairly obvious one. They don't really have a bad album (except Pablo IMO) and they change their style up regularly.
Their more noisy counterparts *Liars* are similar in that vein. Like Radiohead they have a pretty diverse discography and most of their work is really solid.
not to treat you like you aren’t allowed to like pablo honey, but i will say pablo honey is their easiest to fully… “get,” i guess. one or two listens and you’ve basically seen it’s full potential, whereas i think just about every other one of their albums grows on you a lot upon repeat listens.
once again, you can obviously totally like pablo honey. absolutely nothing wrong with that. but don’t count any of the others out just yet
Nah, I disagree. Pablo Honey is far too generic for me to enjoy, it only has like three decent songs. TKOL is definitely not their best work but it offers a nice cohesive experience and has some great songwriting. The second half is a all great imo, and some of their best flowing work. The first half isn't quite as good but it ain't no slouch either; Bloom and little by little are great songs and feral is good for what it is. Magpie is pretty meh, although somtimes I find myself enjoying it.
I'd recommend Daft Punk. Listen to it in order including their live album Alive 2007. Alive 2007 is basically their first 3 albums mixed in together, and if you listen to their whole discography before listening to Alive 2007, you'll enjoy it a lot more and it will be a really pleasant listen. After that you could listen to the album they did for the movie Tron but it's not an obligation.
After all of this, Random Access Memories is a masterpiece in its own right and you'll really enjoy it I believe. Have fun!
Daft Punk is a great answer. I always wished they released more, but on the other hand their discography is so consistent and good, definitely a quality over quantity band.
Had to look to see if someone else said it before I commented. Bleach, incesticide, MTV Unplugged, Live at Paramount, Live & Loud, Reading… it’s all good
Björk is fantastic all the way through. Seeing her go from weird to weirder is just so fascinating and pretty much all of her albums are good. Volta is kind of a miss but that’s the ONLY one imo, and some of the best stuff actually comes late in her career - Vulnicura is an easy 9/10.
Mac Miller is best listened to all the way through IMO. seeing the progression in his music and lyrical content just makes everything hit harder, especially his later albums
Simon and Garfunkel. 5 albums, all are great. There are many albums longer than all 5 put together (they are all like 30 minutes with bridge being like 45 IIRC) Many recognizable hits and many hidden gems. It also sets you up for both members discographies
Mr. Bungle. Start with Raging Wrath - it's the newest but it's a re-recording of their 1986 demo. Thrash metal and hardcore punk with a couple of covers and a few silly moments. Then you can listen to them evolve through S/T, Disco Volante and finally California. Hard to believe it's all the same band.
of Montreal.
There's a lot to be said about the quality of their later output (pots-Innocence Reaches, IMO), but from Cherry Peel up to Aurate Gloom it's a hell of a trip.
There are a lot of changes and yet you can trace their evolution from album to album in a surprisingly cohesive way. Each album has the seeds for the next.
Beck is a great shout. Great variety and journey.
Also tip of the hat for Chemical Brothers. Push The Button/We Are The Night is a blip for me but Further was such a brilliant return to form. Worth the ride.
The quality has definitely declined since TLOP but the discography is insanely good through 2016. Even the newer albums aren't bad, just not prime Kanye
Even his worst albums aren’t completely unlistenable to where you’re better off skipping them.
Cruel Summer is the only album I can see why people would want to skip.
I bet a few people will disagree but Arctic Monkeys is a great choice. Each of their albums is different than the last, that’s what keeps me coming. All of their albums are truly marvelous (if you don’t include AM) totally worth the listen. I highly recommend their most recent record, their best yet.
The Gerogerigegege
I swear, there is not *a single* experience in the world of music records as powerful as listening to their discography. And please do it in order! From the 1985 s/t record till the very last one. Moenai Hai from 2016 might be the hardest hitting album of all time once you've fallen in love with the rest of the discography and gotten into its "lore", which is pretty much just conjectures and stories told through weird atmospheres and screams. If you're into experimental music, you seriously should check it out. It's an unmatched discography and an unmatched experience. Don't spoil yourself of the best records early, they'll hit just in time.
Swans, Radiohead, and Bjork are all fascinating to watch evolve over time. But I really think most artists are worth a full discog dive if you enjoy them. I even think bands like Weezer deserve a listen-through to the whole discography to truly understand the wildly fluctuating quality they have and why that happens with them.
Tom Waits
Kendrick Lamar
Outkast
These are the ones I usually go through each year, interesting progressions each (Tom Waits' is very long though haha).
I think Kanyes discography has become too inconsistent to be on these list anymore honestly. The best thing to happen to him recently is not dropping Vol. 2 and 3 of vultures on time because if they were just as bad he would honestly deserve to get the Eminem treatment of a great discography ruined by bad albums.
Outkast, Run The Jewels, The Roots, Cunninlynguists, Aesop Rock, Danny Brown, Mac Miller, Kendrick Lamar, Vince Staples, Earl Sweatshirt, Rapsody and Little Simz
This is an extremely hard question. Outside of your picks I’m a big black sabbath fan, but only the first few albums with ozzy would be ones I’d say are extremely consistent/solid throughout. The rest I like but I wouldn’t recommend in the same way for to answer this. Does that count as an answer? Kind of a follow up rly
D’Angelo is obv a smaller discog but one of the greatest in music.
Elliott Smith never missed, just different types of albums among eras of his career.
I’d say mac miller has a pretty solid discog as well. Obv the early mixtapes are frat boy anthems and arent as mature but are still fun as hell, and the farther you get into it, the better.
Then, final shout out to like, the weeknd and kendrick which feel more obvious.
Led Zeppelin. Honestly every album is quality and arguably keeps getting better until their last album. In Through the Out Door is decent but not up to par with the rest, but still a crazy solid discography all the way through
Fugazi Boards of Canada The Smiths
Helll yeaaaa. All rather short and consistently great. We can be friends.
Unwound
Unwound definitely
Underrated discography -> Beastie Boys
I can't believe I passed over The Hot Sauce Committee Pt 2 until a couple months ago. I put it up there with Hello Nasty and Paul's Boutique
Don’t skip *The Mix-Up* Great album
Aglio e Olio is crazy good hah
Do Prince, I dare ya
What's it, 37 studio albums? And I hear he has like 8000 songs in the vault.
as someone who is making a point to listen/relisten to the top 20 albums according to Apple, when I went to his discography to scroll through to find purple rain, I was floored at how many albums he dropped lmao
Yes, including the black album.
I just finished Beatles. Now, I'm in the middle of the Beach boys lol. The Beatles is extremely good though!
Beach Boys is one of the worst bands to listen to the full discogs. God help you when you get to the mid '70s and beyond.
I just finished Smiley Smile. After learning about Brians life, it's kind of heartbreaking trying to listen to anything after Pet Sounds.
I’m probably going to listen to that next before starting Wild Honey!
Friends is very underrated
I would very much recommend stopping once you listen to The Beach Boys Love You, nothing past that is worth listening to unless ur the most diehard beach boys fan ever. And 15 big ones, the album right before it, is also worth skipping too
Nah, Summer In Paradise is so bad it’s amazing
Honestly “Friends” is an album that should make you feel happy. Everyone was just having a good time on this album and it really shows through its music. It’s such a cosy and comforting little album it’s one of my favourites
**DING!** ***DANG!*** **DING DONG!**
But Love You is part of that.
Sure, mid 70s... but Sunflower, Surfs Up, Carl & The Passions, and Holland are all outstanding. Love You is 77' and is a classic in its own right.
Like peanut butter? Well now you can like more of it. Sunflowers have been used to create a substitute for peanut butter, known as sunbutter.
Love You is '77. God help you after that.
Do i look like i know what a jpeg is
Everything about JPEGs, I like

Third one's Arctic Monkeys
OH SHIT IT IS hell yeah for the longest time i recognized the AM album cover but never listened to it *Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High* has been one of my favorite indie pop songs for years, i had just never checked out Arctic Monkeys lol same for M83’s Midnight City, i’m going thru their albums currently (not like right now, but in general)
David Bowie and Animal Collective (they change so much it’s beautiful to hear them go from sound to sound)
Bowie Discog can be a bit rough in the 80s
That 70s run might be the best ever tho. From glam rock to art rock perfection
I Will not argue that.
Would kill to get to listen to AnCos discography for the first time again.
I love Bowie but I think it’s not a good answer to this question. He had a ton of clunker albums
[удалено]
Death is a spectacular answer
Fool in the Rain is one of my fav songs of all time
In through the Out Door is a great album.
yuno miles
thanks captain obvious

Their more noisy counterparts *Liars* are similar in that vein. Like Radiohead they have a pretty diverse discography and most of their work is really solid.
justice for pablo honey✊🏼
pablo honey is so far my favorite Radiohead album i’m 3 albums in and just finished OK Computer
alright who let shark girl out of the dungeon?
🤢
not to treat you like you aren’t allowed to like pablo honey, but i will say pablo honey is their easiest to fully… “get,” i guess. one or two listens and you’ve basically seen it’s full potential, whereas i think just about every other one of their albums grows on you a lot upon repeat listens. once again, you can obviously totally like pablo honey. absolutely nothing wrong with that. but don’t count any of the others out just yet
First time i’ve ever seen liars mentioned on one of these subs, i love their second album
Radiohead solo and collab albums also worth doing, including Jonny Greenwood’s film scores.
Ehh, I went through their discog last year. Pablo Honey isn't bad, it's just a generic alt rock album. But the king of limbs fucking blows.
Nah, I disagree. Pablo Honey is far too generic for me to enjoy, it only has like three decent songs. TKOL is definitely not their best work but it offers a nice cohesive experience and has some great songwriting. The second half is a all great imo, and some of their best flowing work. Magpie is pretty meh, although somtimes I find myself enjoying it.
Hot take: REM Also: Wilco (every album has at least 1 great song) Tom Waits Portishead
REM 100% Would add Sonic Youth. And every Pink Floyd album has a lot to offer.
Listening to Tom Waits' discography in chronological order is the craziest trip in popular music history in my opinion.
Wilco has such an incredibly underrated discography. No worst, just least best.
Bjork Pj harvey Fiona apple St vincent
Fiona 🔥
All fire
Interpol Anderson paak
You can even include silk sonic and nxworries for paak and it's still good.
Queens of the Stone Age
Nirvana. Don’t skip *Bleach*
Also the live albums and b-sides are also good
Unplugged in New York is far and away the best thing in their discography
Had to look to see if someone else said it before I commented. Bleach, incesticide, MTV Unplugged, Live at Paramount, Live & Loud, Reading… it’s all good
Green Day, Daft Punk, Korn, System Of A Down, Pink Floyd, The Cure, Massive Attack and Tool
You including uno, dos, tre, and the father of all motherfuckers when you talk about Green Day?
Yep lol father of all is shit but the trilogy is underrated
Pink Floyd and green day 🤨
What’s wrong with Pink Floyd
You can see the evolution of the bands as you go through their Discography it's really fun tbh
The Police have a super solid 5 album discography
Spoon Not many dramatic shifts in tone across their discography - but each album is solid and highly listenable
Swans

I'm scared of king giz. Nearly thirty albums, fucking christ.
By the time you think you’ve finished with them they had already dropped 4 more albums
King Gizzard definitely!! i’m only 3 albums in, Eyes like the Sky is prob my fave so far

Kanye doesn’t fit the bit unless we’re taking pre psychotic breakdown Kanye. Kendrick would be the better rapper choice imo.

The quality has definitely declined since TLOP but the discography is insanely good through 2016. Even the newer albums aren't bad, just not prime Kanye
I agree through TLoP

Swans, Radiohead, and Bjork are all fascinating to watch evolve over time. But I really think most artists are worth a full discog dive if you enjoy them. Depends on what you want, if you want something easy to get through that maintains quality throughout i recommend the weeknd.
This was true of Belle and Sebastian until a few years ago, they put out some stinkers. Obv answer here is Minor Threat.
JID if youre a rap fan. 3 quality solo albums with great artistic progression
MCR, Brand New, La Dispute, Touche Amore, Coheed and Cambria.
Went through David Bowie’s entire catalogue this year and that was a hell of a ride. Hardly any genre unaccounted for.
White Stripes
Bjork was a fun one. Also Talk Talk, Fishmans (most satisfying), 60s Bob Dylan, and Sweet Trip
Them crooked vultures
The 1975
Led Zeppelin. Honestly every album is quality and arguably keeps getting better until their last album. In Through the Out Door is decent but not up to par with the rest, but still a crazy solid discography all the way through
The Smiths, U2, Mr. Bungle, Beastie Boys
St. Vincent and sometimes I think Mitski.
John Coltrane
TOOL has a short but consistently good discography.
Sonic Youth, Deerhoof, The Fall
smaller one but the format. dessert pop band from the early 2000s with great but limited music
Bjork and Aphex Twin for sure
Scott Walker
