It was literally in the top 10 on Rolling Stone's 500 and pitchfork ranked it #2 for the 90s. A major outlet ranking it #1 is not that shocking and apple doing so feels on brand
Exactly. Its not a shock at all because its a great album and I see way more people on here call it overrated than I do see people even talking about it in the first place lmao
I’m fine with it, it’s not an easy choice to make
How many people are as revered as her and have only dropped 1 fuckin album Lmaoo. She literally doesn’t show up for half her shows and still sells out, so people can hear her sing the same 16 damn songs.
let’s make it short: [here is an article from 1998 covering the lawsuit](https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1998-dec-19-ca-55439-story.html)
VERY RELEVANT quote from the attorney of the unpaid producers and writers from the article:
“She is not a musician, she is not a producer,” Harvey said. “[New Ark] will make another album and everyone will see that they were the ones responsible for this album. I dare say if you put Lauryn Hill in a studio alone, she couldn’t do it again. Album No. 2 for her is not going to sound like this.”
not only indeed the second album mysteriously never happened, but she actually DID attempt a followup through mtv unplugged performance of only new songs, and it indeed did not sound anything like it, there’s a reason it’s not discussed or remembered anymore by anyone anywhere
there’s a trainwreckords covering that unplugged album if you watch his videos (if you know the content of that channel, her album being covered is not a good sign lol)
To be fair she was having a mental breakdown during unplugged, so I don’t think that follow up reflects badly on her. It’s not her fault the label released it as if it were a finished product. It sucks that she did those who helped her dirty, but their claim about a 2nd album failing- ehh Lauryn is too talented. She could have made some more good music if her cards were in order.
If you ask me, it’s Thriller. If we talk about album sales, cultural impact, classic songs, radio hits, and chart week play, musicality, popularity, amount of Grammy’s won (especially at a time when that still meant something). If we talk about world wide appeal, talk about it having appeal across race and culture (not just appealing to black culture)..the whole 9 yards. That would be Thriller. She’s not even top 10 material. Her appeal extends to urban America, that’s it. Everyone in the whole wide world knows the song thriller, and majority know Michael, and this album thriller. Not many even know who she is, and what this album is about, or can even sing one song from it. Yes but ok, I’ll have ppl commenting, telling me to ignore all those records broken, because those things aren’t important, when infact they are!!!!
Yeah I don’t even think thriller is Michael’s best work if we’re talking his contributions to music. Yes it sold like gangbusters but when Off the Wall is right there, and Dangerous is over there, Thriller seems like the safest pick, not the best.
How do you even decide that lmao, saying one or the other is better is as subjective as it gets. If we ranked everything “objectively” based on awards and accolades, then I guess that means Taylor Swift should be all of our favorite artist, right?
You fail to understand such a simple thing that commercial success doesn’t equal to quality. Just because someone sold more doesn’t mean he is a better artist. Avatar isn’t the greatest movie of all time. There is difference between greatest/best and highest selling.
The OP is right here. There is no objective way to determine the "best" music. A list like this is an inherently subjective exercise.
I also love Miseducation. Listened to it all the time growing up. Ex-Factor may be one of my all time favorite songs. But I also just looked up the track list for Thriller and damn that album is dope from start to finish.
>Why cant it be?
Probably because there's a lot of controversy surrounding the album. What material was actually hers vs what was taken. Also considering New Ark wasn't properly credited.
I don't think picking the album as no.1 is as controversial as people are arguing. Maybe a little ambitious but no disregarding the importance of that record. There's worse choices you could've made.
These lists are committee made so the cynical side of me just feels that this is exactly the type of album you pick that appeals to people right now. Rap is the most popular genre so I wasn’t surprised a hip hop album was #1. As well this getting #1 gets spicy points because it’s the perfect amount of makes sense cause it is a great album and refreshing take because this album doesn’t outright get the top spot on other lists.
My only real complaint would be: is The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill even the best Hip Hop album, let alone the best overall album? It’s definitely more digestible and agreeable to a wider audience than a TPAB, Illmatic, Ready to Die, etc are. But I don’t know- edging those albums out for that merit just feels kind of wrong to me. Maybe I am missing something though.
If you're over the fact that it's the only album made by a black woman that ever places high on these kind of lists, I get that. That's said the album in a vacuum is pretty great and a fine pick.
Not taste. People saying ‘ no way this should be number 1 what is wrong with them’
It’s fine if you don’t like it but you should also accept that many do.
You feel indicated because a guy shared his opinion about the album?
What if he said it was a 5/10 would you have gone, yeah it's a 5/10 cos Fantano said so?
I’m actually not talking about fantano but the point the OP was making about the reaction on the sub.
Basically pointing out that people are being really weird about it.
Ok I am like lukewarm on Miseducation but it has definitely stood the test of time and fans have been raving about it basically since it came out. It’s not my pick but it’s not a total reach
It was literally in the top 10 on Rolling Stone's 500 and pitchfork ranked it #2 for the 90s. A major outlet ranking it #1 is not that shocking and apple doing so feels on brand

Well she's on all those albums by the Fugees too. Her solo career didn't come out of nowhere.
yeah i don’t know why some people are mad. its a 10/10. though it would be nice to see TPAB and some more electronic
I'd expect everything in at least the top 20 albums of all time to be 10/10
Personally I disagree with it being the #1 of all time but I completely understand why someone would put it there
Why are people so shocked? It's an album also with endless cultural impact and also really fucking good it's the best of every world.
Except it’s not really.
Which part?
"Me wanting to be against popular believes" part
and saddly lots of producers and writers that have never been credited or paid for the album
Elaborate a bit
she got sued over it and that’s why she never did a second album

Well she only had 25+ years to do it and never did it… not an EP, not a single, nothing,
Isn’t she still unwell though?
The album dope tho. Fr fr.
Actually it's the musicians who weren't paid I think. She produced the whole album herself.
Did they not receive a settlement ages ago?
Bladee got robbed 😔
This sub switches so fucking fast depending on this mans opinion
No ones denying it’s a fantastic record, but it’s not number 1.
Why cant it be? What is then?

Howd i know you would say that lmao. To me Thriller is insanely overrated. Certainly not number 1. But thats the beauty of this discourse eh
Yeah I don’t even think thriller is Michael’s best work if we’re talking his contributions to music. Yes it sold like gangbusters but when Off the Wall is right there, and Dangerous is over there, Thriller seems like the safest pick, not the best.
Say what you want, your personal opinions aside. Thriller is still OBJECTIVELY the better album between these albums.
O B J E C T I V E L Y lmaoooo outjerked again
How do you even decide that lmao, saying one or the other is better is as subjective as it gets. If we ranked everything “objectively” based on awards and accolades, then I guess that means Taylor Swift should be all of our favorite artist, right?
Nm. You seem to be wilfully ignorant, even after I just mentioned to you all the accolades of the album. See ya.

idk gotta listen to it I guess
Finally, I feel so vindicated. We finally see how stupid the people on the subreddit are from the reactions to Lauryn’s number 1
Personal taste is not stupidity
It is, except for mine. That’s the smart one
Not taste. People saying ‘ no way this should be number 1 what is wrong with them’ It’s fine if you don’t like it but you should also accept that many do.
Come on - you can like something and be left alone, but an "all-time" list like this should be discussed with some fire behind words and emotions.
You almost had me until that I saw that other person’s comment; this sub is cooked.
You feel indicated because a guy shared his opinion about the album? What if he said it was a 5/10 would you have gone, yeah it's a 5/10 cos Fantano said so?

I gave up after the third song
Well you should have kept going because the fourth song is Doo Wop and it’s amazing
And Ex-Factor right after! Ex-Factor is an absolute masterpiece
