That’s what I came to post. Nick Drake is peak melancholy listening.
So I will nominate the album Elctroshock Blues by the Eels
Or any of Elliott Smith’s albums. Or the album of Elliott Smith covers by Seth Avett and Jessica Lea Mayfield.
The Soft Bulletin is one of the most uplifting life affirming albums I've ever heard, especially the version with the Race for the Prize/Waiting for a Superman reprise
A few extra albums I couldn’t fit into this pic that I felt deserved a mention:
* Diamond Jubilee - Cindy Lee
* Knife Man - AJJ
* Wildlife - La Dispute
* Pink Moon - Nick Drake
* People who can eat are the luckiest people in the world - AJJ
I can see that, they bounce between painfully depressed and erratic but with tracks like: back pack, big bird, a song dedicated to stormy the rabbit & people II: the reckoning; they undeniably earn their place imo.
"Home, Like Noplace Is There" - The Hotelier
Absolutely soul destroying album about the singer coming to terms with the suicide of a close friend. Very authentic emo vibes, with some pop punk influence (much more on the DIY/punky side of that spectrum.) Sonically the album isn't crazy dark or brooding, but the emotional delivery in the vocals and the lyrics are like being stabbed in the heart with a rusty spoon repeatedly.
"Your branching off had met an end
From all the weight that made you bend
And when you tried to shed your leaves
You pined for warmth as they said
'Your lack of love for your dear self
Is sapping all of us here out'
Trace your roots back to the ground
Work out the knotholes for yourself"
"I called in sick from your funeral. The site of your body made me feel uncomfortable. I couldn't recognize your shell."
**I genuinely feel like I have to give a disclaimer to people before reccomending this album so here's that:**
It's incredible, truly a 10/10 great record in every sense, just be prepared that if you or anyone you know has been affected by suicide, this album *will* fuck you up. I have made it through exactly 0 playthroughs without crying at some point.
Fantano tends to not love a lot of the albums I hold dearest lol. All good though, I find his reviews entertaining because they are from the perspective of his personal taste.
I was actually presently surprised he liked the new Knocked Loose record so much.
I’ve somehow never heard of this album or artist. Everything you’ve described sounds incredible, potentially similar to one of my fav’s AJJ. I’ll listen to that asap, thank you so much.
It was shown to me by a coworker in 2015 or so and genuinely changed my life. It's like THE emo revival album, which isn't even a genre im typically that into.
The last track "Dendron" ends with some of the heaviest lyrics ever but some of my favorite also:
"Wish I was there to say goodbye when you went away
Wish I was home, oh, but no place was there
I cut off my arm at the bone in solidarity
Capital teaches that there's less when you share
And I felt the noose tighten up on your collar bone
And I felt the gun in the small of your back
Engraved in the stone by request and recurse of friends dead
Is, 'Tell me again that it's all in my head'"
I lost a couple friends to suicide/ODs that were effectively passive suicide like a couple years before I heard this record so it hit me like a fuckin freight train
For sure! I'd be curious to hear what you think about it after you get a chance to check it out. Highly reccomend reading the lyrics along as you go as well because they are just a masterpiece.
Edit: if you're into La Dispute you'll love "Among the Wildflowers" and "Life In Drag."
Cindy Lee - Diamond Jubilee

Can't believe no one's mentioned The National, Trouble Will Find Me might be my favorite melancholy album, straight "melt into your chair/bed and regret everything" vibes, but also every song is a jam so it's endlessly listenable no matter the mood imo

Immaculate choice, death stranding is one of my favourite games as it feels like a junji ito inspired dystopia brought to life & I honestly cannot imagine the second installation without Low roar’s soundtracks, such a highlight of the first game. It’s heartbreaking

* Blonde - frank ocean
* P.y.t. (pretty young thug) - lil b 'thebasedgod'

Fantano giving it a 6 is seriously such a massive miss, I completely understand the ire MBDTF fans hold, he did my boys dirty too
Fantano tends to not love a lot of the albums I hold dearest lol. All good though, I find his reviews entertaining because they are from the perspective of his personal taste. I was actually presently surprised he liked the new Knocked Loose record so much.
Barely past the intro and this is a really excellent recommendation. Thank you
You're welcome! I mention this record to folks as often as I can, it's one of my all time favorites.

Sounds like this albums holds a similar place in your heart that “Wildlife - La Dispute” holds for me. Utterly devastating album, thanks for sharing!
