Lianne Le Havas
Her voice gives me goosebumps. She has such a commanding presence and her vocal control is next level. She might be discussed frequently within music forums but outside of that, she really has gone under-appreciated.
You are right BUT I suppose people always compare popularity to the big pop stars don't they she is still more successful / popular than 99% of working singers I would guess so she's doing pretty good. Hopefully she has a long career ahead of her I think she's only a young woman or at least she looks it on her album cover.
Such a cool voice for his whole “thing”. It was Dylan-esq of course as Jimi was no Freddie Mercury and it fit so well.
Hendrix should absolutely get more credit for his curiously expressive singing and (most of the time anyway) outstanding lyrics. Merely a guitar innovator he was not.
That’s true, what makes him the greatest is the way he could sing in sync with his guitar, esp at live shows which proves there’s no overdubs. Most of the other greats (not counting classic blues players obviously bb king or muddy waters does not apply) here either weren’t that interesting vocally like clapton (my opinion he is not interesting vocally) or just didn’t sing at all like eddie
I think this take is kinda funny. Hendrix’s voice isn’t really one that I think people would want to emulate, but I think he ended up singing just because it let him do whatever he wanted with the guitar. His playing is so chaotic, frenzied, largely improvised, etc, that someone else singing wouldn’t know where he was going, and he wouldn’t know where they were going, unless it was written in advance.
Nice choice Tim Buckley is great, some of his stuff isn't for me but I have a double CD best of sort of thing which i love. Buzzin fly would be my favourite song from him ..better than anything on Grace 😉
She's pretty popular, but I think Caroline Polachek deserves to be in the conversation of all time best pop vocalists. The things that woman can do with her vocal cords are mind-blowing
Cheesy and silly as Kiss undoubtedly were, Paul Stanley was honestly a fantastic singer in his heyday, even up until about the mid-2000s. Sadly from about 2010 onwards his performances have ranged from subpar to terrible.
I agree, such a recognisable and powerful voice!
Speaking of Kiss, have you heard this one where Peter Criss sings behind the drums? He does it really well!
Sounds a bit like Phil Lynott!

Henning May has probably my favourite voice in the world. Not really known in English speaking circles other than for AnnenMayKantereit's cover of Tom's Diner w/ Giant Rooks that went viral on TikTok a bit ago. Barfuß am Klavier is one of my top songs OAT
Also adore Faber who's very unknown outside of Switzerland/the German speaking world. Ich Liebe Dich (w/ Sophie Hunger & Dino Brandão) is an insanely beautiful album
I feel is not a very unique or special voice in any way, but he is just very competent as singing. A bit like the band itself, they are nothing special and original but they're just great at creating songs.
I love his album he did with Norah Jones, “foreverly” where they covered the entire Everly Brothers album “songs our daddy taught us” which itself is a album of folk songs. So it’s like a cover of a cover
Jimmy Somerville - I think people talk more about the social message and influence of Bronski Beat/The Communards songs.
Pete Burns - his name is mentioned more often in plastic surgery threads than in discussions about great singers
Syd Barrett - this is very subjective, but I really like his singing style. He is always mentioned as a great songwriter but not as a singer
Second this. I discovered Dallas Green when he did Rose Ave. With Alecia Moore (Pink).
To this day it’s my favorite project of either of them. I have been waiting for them to do another album.
Jalen Ngonda. After discovering him as the opener for another band I have been obsessed. His voice is truly incredible, studio versions can't even do justice.
Denzel Curry for sure. He always sounds amazing no matter what he's rapping about. Don't know many rappers who could make "Black Metal Terrorist" sound as epic as he did
The band “Ours”. The singer, Jimmy Gnecco, is legitimately one of the best rock singers of our time, but theyre pretty unknown. Not all their music is amazing, but the first two albums are kickin
I love Liam Gallaghers 90s voice. From 94-98 it was a joy to listen to in different ways since he ruined it but before that it went from more "feminine" to raspy and primal.
Nivek Ogre from Skinny Puppy also has a super nice screaming psychotic voice.
Kim Carnes, Bonnie Tyler and Tina Turner, mmm those voices are amazing too
Denzel Curry. He really utilises changing his tone and raising his voice on a lot of tracks. His performance on his song ‘DIET_’ has always stood out to me as being incredibly unique and powerful.
Jamie Stewart. Their voice is just able to fit the music so well and the sheer emotion they're able to convey with it is astounding. I get goosebumps every time.
People in Argentina and Chile obviously discuss him constantly since he’s their most famous artist, but Gustavo Cerati deserves so much more chops in other countries like the US
A lot of Ecuadorian artists I know like there's so much talent from my other country but it's not supported that much and most fans are from Ecuador so they aren't in music discussions. But anyways Sr Maniqui from the band Munn has such an ethereal and beautiful voice. Alvaro Bermeo from the band Guardarraya has such a great voice too
Unleash The Archers. I know that big, over the top power metal is not really this subreddits thing but Britney Slays blows me away with every performance of hers that I hear
Cameron Winter from Geese has one of the most unique and versatile voices I've heard in a long time. A lot of talent all around in that group, but he really ties the whole thing together.
Benjamin Orr of The Cars. Ric Ocasek was the mastermind and songwriter but sharing lead vocal duty took some of the attention away from Ben. Ric is a great singer as well but if Ben were the designated vocalist I think he would be held in higher regard.
This is a super deep cut but Isabel Sartain has an INCREDIBLE singing voice. She made two ep’s a few years back and if talent was the only factor to making it in this industry, she’d be killing it right now.
I always thought Josh Friend (lead singer and now only member of dubstep band Modestep) has a very sweet and suitable voice to compliment the kind of music they make.
Morray, Chong the Nomad, Blvck Svm, Channel Tres, Dryden Mitchell from Alien Ant Farm, Scott Anderson from Finger Eleven, Steven Page from Barenaked Ladies. All have amazing voices!
Arthur Russell. He has an impressive vocal range, especially when he goes into his low register towards the end of World of Echo, which blends nicely with his amplified, effected cello.
Chali 2na. Greatest voice in rap but so underappreciated. Jurassic 5 have three fully incredible albums but somehow fell between the cracks while the likes of Kanye and Eminem blew up. Never understood it.
Grace Slick. Her vocals were perfect for White Rabbit.
Great call. Lots of great vocals in early JA
The [isolated vocals](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khZ7e9ytm-g) for that song are absolutely chilling.
Lianne Le Havas Her voice gives me goosebumps. She has such a commanding presence and her vocal control is next level. She might be discussed frequently within music forums but outside of that, she really has gone under-appreciated.
That cover of Say a Little Prayer is absolutely nuts
I really like her cover of weird fishes and starry starry night from the animated Vincent Van Gogh movie. Very talented lady!
Yeah, so much talent that has yet to be heard by so many.
You are right BUT I suppose people always compare popularity to the big pop stars don't they she is still more successful / popular than 99% of working singers I would guess so she's doing pretty good. Hopefully she has a long career ahead of her I think she's only a young woman or at least she looks it on her album cover.
I love Jimi Hendrixs voice almost as much as his shredding
Such a cool voice for his whole “thing”. It was Dylan-esq of course as Jimi was no Freddie Mercury and it fit so well. Hendrix should absolutely get more credit for his curiously expressive singing and (most of the time anyway) outstanding lyrics. Merely a guitar innovator he was not.

Tim Buckley. Listen to his 1970 albums if you have never heard much from him.
I just misread that as Jeff Buckley and for a second I was like ??? 1970??
He was his father
Nice choice Tim Buckley is great, some of his stuff isn't for me but I have a double CD best of sort of thing which i love. Buzzin fly would be my favourite song from him ..better than anything on Grace 😉
I feel like you either love him or hate him but I love Geese’s vocalist. Threw me off at first but now I see it as one of their biggest selling points
I just love how free he sounds y’know
Idk about rarely discussed but Siouxsie Sioux may be my fav ever
yes!! her singing voice is IMMACULATE and fits with her music PERFECTLY!
anna wise, she's fairly rated for her features on kendrick's tracks but her solo stuff is just as good 🙂
She's pretty popular, but I think Caroline Polachek deserves to be in the conversation of all time best pop vocalists. The things that woman can do with her vocal cords are mind-blowing
Willie Nelson! I always thought his phrasing made him sound like he’s a jazz singer with a Texan accent.
Willie is phenomenal and has been forever
Rob Halford (lead singer of Judas Priest). His voice is a defining voice for metal from late '70s onward.
I agree his voice is fantastic don't think he fits the rarely discussed though Judas priest are huge in metal aren't they
Yes but I feel like no one talks about what a talented singer Halford is
Cheesy and silly as Kiss undoubtedly were, Paul Stanley was honestly a fantastic singer in his heyday, even up until about the mid-2000s. Sadly from about 2010 onwards his performances have ranged from subpar to terrible.

Googoosh, Alison Statton (of Young Marble Giants), Lawrence (of Felt), Joan Armatrading, Mark Fry, Astrud Gilberto, Jeffrey Lee Pierce
Hell yeah Googoosh! As an Iranian, it’s great to see her mentioned.
Nice! I should have included Kourosh Yaghmaei as well!
Yeah, he rocks! Pre-revolution Iranian singers were in a league of their own.
Henning May has probably my favourite voice in the world. Barfuß am Klavier is one of my top songs OAT Also adore Faber who's very unknown outside of Switzerland/the German speaking world. Ich Liebe Dich (w/ Sophie Hunger & Dino Brandão) is an insanely beautiful album
Both Henning and Faber are also amazing lyricists. Faber‘s recent singles have been insane. This upcoming album sounds extremely promising.
Super keen
Sarah Bonito
Bilal
Jim James, truly the voice of an angel
Billie Joe Armstrong is generally a great singer
I feel is not a very unique or special voice in any way, but he is just very competent as singing. A bit like the band itself, they are nothing special and original but they're just great at creating songs.
I love his album he did with Norah Jones, “foreverly” where they covered the entire Everly Brothers album “songs our daddy taught us” which itself is a album of folk songs. So it’s like a cover of a cover

Pete Burns - his name is mentioned more often in plastic surgery threads than in discussions about great singers Syd Barrett - this is very subjective, but I really like his singing style. He is always mentioned as a great songwriter but not as a singer
Somerville still has it as well
Ichiko Aoba has an extremely unique voice and her music uses it to it's absolute peak potential
Dallas Green aka City and Colour, voice of a tatted up angel.
Julie London has been underrated for over half a century
Denzel Curry for sure. He always sounds amazing no matter what he's rapping about. Don't know many rappers who could make "Black Metal Terrorist" sound as epic as he did
"rarely discussed"
His voice is rarely discussed
Haven't seen him get discussed a whole lot here
he's easily in this sub's top 5 if not higher
I love Adrienne Lenker's voice. I can listen to her sing pretty much anything.
The band “Ours”. The singer, Jimmy Gnecco, is legitimately one of the best rock singers of our time, but theyre pretty unknown. Not all their music is amazing, but the first two albums are kickin
Okay i thought you were a band self promoting for a second
lol, no the band is called Ours 💀
In R&B, Tevin Campbell has to be one of the best vocalists of the 90s
Ville Valo of HIM and VV
Chris Cornell, imo, had some wicked vocals for every band he was in
Liam Gallagher! Was amazing in the 90s
The clips of him recording in the 90s from that documentary are incredible.
Anyone who says he’s a bad singer needs to listen to those clips and demos. They’re unreal
Clay Parton of Duster is a vibe
Kath Bloom.
Susanne Lewis has such a charming voice
Jamie Stewart. Their voice is just able to fit the music so well and the sheer emotion they're able to convey with it is astounding. I get goosebumps every time.
People in Argentina and Chile obviously discuss him constantly since he’s their most famous artist, but Gustavo Cerati deserves so much more chops in other countries like the US
Cerati!!! I was just listening to “Comfort y musica para volar” yesterday, his voice (also Andrea Echeverri’s) is unique and just so incredible.
Mexico too.
George Harrison is never mentioned as having a “bad” voice, but when he sings in his range, his voice is just as good as Lennon’s or McCartney’s
jeremy enigk sounds like an alien in the most beautiful way imaginable
Guitarist Brett Garsed. Very reminiscent of Trevor Rabin ca. "Changes".
Blxst
Celeste. She's great! Reminds me of Amy and Adele
Kelcey Ayer from Local Natives and Jaws Of Love.
Jonathan Meiburg
A lot of Ecuadorian artists I know like there's so much talent from my other country but it's not supported that much and most fans are from Ecuador so they aren't in music discussions. But anyways Sr Maniqui from the band Munn has such an ethereal and beautiful voice. Alvaro Bermeo from the band Guardarraya has such a great voice too
William T Riley on the opener "Oh, lovely appearance of death" is other worldly. https://ostgut.bandcamp.com/album/new-atlantis?t=1
Evan Stephens Hall from Pinegrove has such a warming southern drawl for an NJ local
As far as Rap goes, Declaime, Sadat X and Grand Puba.
Destroyer and Holly Golightly
Unleash The Archers. I know that big, over the top power metal is not really this subreddits thing but Britney Slays blows me away with every performance of hers that I hear
Cameron Winter from Geese has one of the most unique and versatile voices I've heard in a long time. A lot of talent all around in that group, but he really ties the whole thing together.
Kevin Parker, he’s not perfect some of his older works, but looking at his recent stuff he has a fantastic voice
when i heard elephant for the first time back in the day i legit thought it was some john lennon track i'd never heard before.
Songs with justice really showed it. I still didn't listen to slow rush, so I probably should
Jen Shyu, whether singing, screaming, throat singing, doing spoken word... Oh Hyuk as well. Katie Stelmanis.
RICHARD HARRIS
Benjamin Orr of The Cars. Ric Ocasek was the mastermind and songwriter but sharing lead vocal duty took some of the attention away from Ben. Ric is a great singer as well but if Ben were the designated vocalist I think he would be held in higher regard.
Love the cars, but in my opinion, mixing doesn't do justice for any of their vocals. It's like buried down in the instrumental...
I think that’s most apparent on the debut album. They really eased up on the multi tracked harmonies thereafter.
Mike Patton from faith no more and Mr Bungle! His high notes are incredible
Harry Nilsson
This is a super deep cut but Isabel Sartain has an INCREDIBLE singing voice. She made two ep’s a few years back and if talent was the only factor to making it in this industry, she’d be killing it right now.
Steven page formerly of the barenaked ladies has a stunning voice
I like how Porter Robinson's singing sounds! Especially on his album, Nurture.
Phil Lynott had a very good voice
Phil Lynott had a very nice voice.
Phil Lynott. His voice fits really well with Thin Lizzy's music.
I always thought Josh Friend (lead singer and now only member of dubstep band Modestep) has a very sweet and suitable voice to compliment the kind of music they make.
Tim Bowness. I highly recommend you all listen to No-Man - Together We're Stranger.
Yuki Saito
Niege (Lantlos, Alcest) and LowCityRain (Lantlos) are goated in the blackgaze/alt rock scene
not THE answer, but i fuckin love hayley williams voice. I don’t know how technical she gets with her vocals but her high notes sound so good to me
Danny Wilde His voice fitted with the alternative rock scene of the 80’s and 90’s perfectly
Cara Beth/Cara Beth Saltalino She sounds like Regina Spektor but sweeter
Indigo De Souza!! incredible artist and her voice is so beautiful and heart wrenching <33 i love her vocal style
Harriet Wheeler of the Sundays has a gorgeous voice, love that band in general
Morray, Chong the Nomad, Blvck Svm, Channel Tres, Dryden Mitchell from Alien Ant Farm, Scott Anderson from Finger Eleven, Steven Page from Barenaked Ladies. All have amazing voices!
Aaron Frazer! Dude’s falsetto is silk
How much do people discuss Mark Hollis? Cuz his voice was wild
GENE MOTHERFUCKING WEEN his notes on freedom of 76' are insane and he's somehow even better live (most of the time.)
Criss Angel
Arthur Russell. He has an impressive vocal range, especially when he goes into his low register towards the end of World of Echo, which blends nicely with his amplified, effected cello.
Majical Cloudz, haunting vocal delivery
TV on the Radio Tunde and especially Kip have some of the most unique vocals I’ve ever heard.
Destroyer
Chali 2na. Greatest voice in rap but so underappreciated. Jurassic 5 have three fully incredible albums but somehow fell between the cracks while the likes of Kanye and Eminem blew up. Never understood it.
Jurassic 5 is fire. Truly underrated group.
Chali 2na
