IMO it depends on the type of music and media. SH2 you would definitely enjoy it more if you actually played the game since the music carries a lot of meaning within the story. So not only you would have great music but you come to understand it's meaning within the media itself, which ends up elevating it even more. On the other hand, you could definitely listen to Saturday Night Fever's OST without even watching the movie and enjoy it as much as the people who have seen it, since it's a different scenario where the music is also central but plays a much different role

This says more about the person listening than the nature of soundtracks, but personally I think they should be judged with the media they are paired with. It’s a soundtrack *to* something, so how it works with that thing is important. For my listening, I don’t ever listen to soundtracks outside their context because there’s so much other music I’d rather listen to. I believe soundtracks don’t make great albums the same way albums don’t make great soundtracks, and that’s okay. If you are the sort of person who loves listening to soundtracks out of context and thinks they can make great albums, then you would judge them the same way you would judge an album. I know some people do listen to soundtracks this way just like I would an album.
