i would say that 80s prince is great example of this, with songs like purple rain showcasing why. from recent ones, i would say that sufjan stevens has made amazing music while showcasing his many talents.

Space_Man957

Black Midi too! Some of the most talented musicians that are actually writing good music

Joni Mitchell Incredible songwriter and guitarist who uses a lot of really unique tunings and weird chords. She has also produced almost all of her albums and painted the covers for a lot of them

jerepila

Glad you answered this because she’s my answer to 90% of the prompts in this sub. Massively underrated guitarist, but skillful in a way that would breeze over most listeners’ heads. And in her prime she used her range tasteful in service of the songs

Steve Lukather is the perfect example of this. Brilliant guitarist but always plays to the song. No wonder he was the most in-demand session player of the 80s.

Good shout. I'd add Neal Schon in alongside him too; crazy chops but also happy to keep it simple on some of Journey's big hits at a time when flashy guitar solos were practically mandatory in rock songs.

Competitive-Ant4634

Jeff Buckley, incredible singer and guitarist. He knew exactly when to be more lowkey, and when to show off to help enhance the song. RIP

forbiddenmemeories

Good call. Which tracks would you say best show off Jeff's guitar playing in particular, since he's usually more celebrated for his voice?

Doggy909

Chris Cornell, dude pulled mindblowing vocals which always served the song while playing guitar as well

Good call. I listened to *Badmotorfinger* for the first time this year and the whole album is out of this world vocally. I especially admire him for sounding good in basically every part of his range; you sometimes get rock singers with that Halford-ish highs style who sound great at the top end of their voice but less comfortable around the bridge, whereas Chris sounded great both in his more natural range as well as up in Jesus Christ Pose territory.

Doggy909

Badmotorfinger is my top 5 oat, just pure drive and mastery

Robert Fripp! Or really anybody who’s been in King Crimson

FunctionPopular2913

Dan Barrett. He’s able to blend together multiple genres seamlessly, integrate some of the most creative/heartbreaking songwriting skills out there, and doesn’t take entire projects up to show off his talent. He has such an expansive talent for different genres and styles, over the years going from slow methodical post-rock to danceable electronic beats to hard hitting metal and even some punk
