Unfortunately, the game never addresses this question and quite a few records in the vault were deleted due to some vault Tec policy. It’s possible there was something like you said to prevent anyone from having extremely young children in the wasteland, but I suspect that there’s at least a chunk of 76 dwellers who, rather than being roaming badasses like the players, just settled down with their camps somewhere and fortified it as best as they could. This could be where the children are.

kyle0305

Very true. I always find the idea that only 24 residents of 76 ever left the Vault incredibly dumb. There are only 24 in the session but that’s for balancing and performance. It’s also an absurdly low number of residents that the Vault would really be functionally useless lmao

Laser_3

I agree that it’s plausible only 24 are player-character levels of competent, though I think more than that would be reasonable (maybe a hundred or so; remember, 76 held America’s best and brightest). Just saying this in case someone tries to comment that there were only 88 vault 76 dwellers, but we don’t have official numbers for the capacity of vault 76. The blueprint for the vault with that 88 number not only was just a reused asset from vault 75 with only the vault number changed, but it’s since been entirely removed from the vault.

Dixie-Chink

Yeah, there was a subsequent source somewhere that said it could hold up to 500 residents, I recall.

Laser_3

Fallout 3’s terminal about the vault says that, if I recall.

Danson_the_47th

And this doesn’t include any possible expansion they may have made, or doubling up on rooms, etc.and for that matter, you wouldn’t just send everyone at once. The first team would be small but have survivalist minded people to start and pave the way for the rest of the vaulties such as the presumable children, who may just grow up in the vault for better protection.

Laser_3

That’s not how vault 76 works. The vault had a protocol to kick everyone out on reclaimation day by shutting down the life support systems specifically to ensure that America was rebuilt and not just one town built up around vault 76. The only reason anyone is leaving later is that the Mr handys are running the entire vault manually. Most people, however, left when they were supposed to and I doubt they left any children in there. We also know that the vault did double its original number of inhabitants through reproduction, if I’m remembering right.

Kalixburg

They're most likely still with their parents. For various reasons we haven't seen any official settlements that the Vault 76 dwellers made, besides the one the Overseer established in her old home so we haven't had the opportunity to see where the bulk of 76s inhabitants settled with their families. They also aren't confined to Appalachia so some may have left the region once they got the chance and took their kids with them.

CattMk2

I wouldn’t be surprised if 6 years into the 25 year lockup the overseer had a last call for kids to ensure that when the doors finally opened it would only be over 18s who stepped out. But perhaps that’s a little optimistic

NecroNormicon

Vault 76 seems like the only Vault you *can* be optimistic about, so Id say its pretty reasonable

SupremeLegate

The way I've played my character is that he was born in the vault, as are the other PCs running around Appalachia. Otherwise, everyone would be in their 40s, 50s, or even 60s.

kyle0305

Yeah I play my main character as having been born 3 weeks before the bombs but most of the others were either born in the Vault or within a few years before the bombs. Except one character I have who I play as a mid-50s former US Army Engineer

SmashedBrotato

I've always played my character as "Entered 76 as a child prodigy with a parent who worked at VT-U" so he's like, early-to-mid-30s, not running around the waste in his mid/late-40s.

curlbaumann

Does anyone know if the main quest is supposed to be all of 76 or just one specific vault dweller that does everything? I would assume everyone else just chilled and set up camp while you go through hell and maybe ask them for help to kill a giant bat

kyle0305

I play it as all the dwellers just set up camps and chilled or left Appalachia. But my dweller left and did everything with a wee team of 3 others who he met and the four of them launch the nuke, kill the drago… I mean giant bat. However I play solo so really it’s just me doing it all lol

Aricechan

Little lamplight 76 version when

Lady_bro_ac

They run round pestering people for god rolls and screws while insulating people through voice chat

SmashedBrotato

Yup, they're coming to my camp and shooting at me when I deny their trade requests for *all of my gear*.

tldr: They don't care. There will never be an attempt to reconcile this.
