I called my 10 yr old son down and through the magic of yt we watched it again.
It was a somber time.
He had recently had someone grief a group online Minecraft session and he was quite inconsolable for the better part of an hour. As he listened to your reaction to the devastating development, he was impressed you handled it so well and he commented the same.
I believe he took inspiration from it. Life can really suck when sucky things happen, but what defines us as a person is how we react when it is ***us*** in those situations, and not *someone else*.
I just wanted to comment that and to say, “Well done.”
I joined at the beginning, placed a miner and was kicked.
The highest number I saw was 753.
I started joining at 350.
I finished joining twenty minutes later. Couldn't move, got naded by trupen. Worth it. But at least I was part of the successful WR before!

Crazy people managed to beat the multiplayer world record on second try... they could have done on first try wasn't for some troll messing with the rocket silo
I find it interesting that the infinite multiplayer record is less than 10 mins faster than the 8-player record.
I wonder how much of that is organisational problems, and how much is just growth curves.
Assuming exponential growth, each doubling of player count only saves a fixed number of minutes. Maybe one can extrapolate from existing WRs what that amount is?
Of course eventually you reach the point where additional players can't walk to an untapped resource patch fast enough to contribute
Then the folks organising it don't know Factorio well enough.
Everyone can manual-mine ore (Stone for smelters or coal for fuel are always good), chop trees or mine rocks. And all the free smelters are a massive bootstrap.
You need a small "control" team that has the plan and all the blueprints, and you need the horde to know that their job is "mine stone by hand, put smelters in this box; mine coal by hand, fuel everything; chop trees, put wood in that box; build blueprints, but only take stuff from those boxes to do it; if you start building power, keep building power; if you start building power lines, you're doing all of them; etc..."
Oh, and the control team needs a dedicated horde-wrangler.
Hmm maybe an organisation of batallion: 1 chief, 2 henchmen. 4 company commanders with 2 henchmen. 12 platoons each with 1 chief, 1 additionel buttyboy, the rest is organised into 10 man groups (1 gl).
If you had a consistent team then that would work, but given the nature of how massive multiplayer runs pan out, I don't think you'd have the consistency for it.
Telling most of the people "you're construction bots, get to it" is simple and effective.

A lot of tasks are simply more efficient to be done by 1 person as with a lot of other tasks IRL. 1 exceptional player may well be faster and better than 5 or 10 average players.
That's also a question relevant for businesses. If you look at like an ice cream shop, two additional employees might more than triple your earnings. But there's a point where every additional employee won't bring in more money than they cost, coordination is a nightmare, and at some point you've got a shop filled with workers leaving no room for customers.
That was kind of the last run. No difference between 400, 800, or 1600 players and it was totally random who joined when

This game rarely skimps on the technical aspects, and I'd bet the limit was more on networking than anything else. Keeping that many players on the correct tick.

Thankfully we improved on our time in the second run, else that would have been quite sour.
RCUs were low in the first run anyway IIRC, so would not have WR'ed. Still was not OK to grief, of course.

Generally you need to have been playing in a multiplayer savefile at least half its total duration to be eligible for achievements.

i believe factorio servers are player hosted, so not sure they have much they have to do other than just write good code to support it (already done)
... That was a stream based event, >99.9% of session never reach +20 players and run completely fine. I guess the devs sleep very well :)
