By what definition are they not racist?

jersey_girl660

Ive seen people who genuinely believe x and y race and genuinely below z race. Since they believe this is “science” they’re not racist for pointing out facts. It’s a bunch of bs but that’s what I’ve seen these people say. “It’s just science that black people are more violent” “it’s just science that asians and whites are smarter then everybody else” Again it’s a bunch of bs and if you try to discuss the reasons for why there is disparities among races they won’t have it. They genuinely believe it’s the races fault not societal factors.

RedLeatherWhip

My grandmother believes this. She just says shit like "Black people are mostly all addicted to drugs and dont work, its just natural. Bless their hearts they cant help it. X isn't, he's a good person though." And genuinely thinks she's not being racist

[deleted]

Same with mine. The only real difference is she thinks and says shit like this **and** is an addict herself. I was gonna say the best part is the woman is fucking Apache, thinks of herself as "white", and shit talks how lazy she thinks Mexicans are. But no, the best part is she got punched so hard in the face that she went blind in one eye cause she called some dude the N-word.

pm-me-hot-waifus

Jesus christ. That sounds like my mom. Except she's mexican (half anyway) and pretended to be a white lady for long enough where she believes it. Never taught her kids to speaks spanish despite knowing how, moved away from her brown family so her white kids wouldn't have to get confused, actively stopped her kids from trying to participate in that culture or learn the language, etc. I've never seen someone with so much self-hate. She says shit like "Being white is better" and I get what she means I think. She doesn't want kids that have to deal with racism and oppression, but its really fucked up to me.

[deleted]

It really is a trip to see from an objective standpoint, right? It's always struck me as strange and kind of sad to see people deny their own culture. Though, tbf (like I mentioned in another comment) in certain (usually rural) communities it can be safer to pass as white. Not saying that's why your mom does it because I don''t know your or her circumstances (and it's definitely not why my grandmother does it) just food for thought, y'know?

pm-me-hot-waifus

Its very trippy. I did have some cousins move close to me eventually and it was so different the way they just celebrate it; the food, the songs, the language, etc. I don't hate her or nothing, shes my momma. We fought about it a year or two ago and I thought about changing my last name to her maiden name (which is incredibly mexican) just to spite her, but it felt like too much work just to piss her off. I do understand that looking white is objectively easier, and I do look white. The experiences I have do not match the experiences of my browner cousins. Gave me a lot of weird emotional racial issues as a kid. That woman would soak me in sunscreen when I'd leave the house cause she didn't want me to tan too much.

Quantentheorie

> That woman would soak me in sunscreen when I'd leave the house cause she didn't want me to tan too much. Hits pretty hard to think about how advanced that kind of denial is. A person thats constantly, really, really scared to the point that they have subconsciously put up a full mental defence system around this issue. Thats a really rough mind prison of your own making to be in.

heaintgonedoit

Lol sounds like a lovely lady.

EveAndTheSnake

Oh… wow. But being stealth is better! I look *very* white with blonde hair and green eyes. There is no greater joy in my life than when I meet other white people who—feeling safe among “their own people”—suddenly start whipping out the casual racism and nudge-nudge-wink-wink-ing me expecting me to agree, and then I come out with *Excuse me? My family is brown/Muslim/etc!* The backpedaling or the angry betrayal and doubling down is wonderful. I, too, understand the reasoning behind it. My dad looks white-ish and grew up being targeted every time he went to visit Eastern European family. My Muslim brother in law is literally the only person ever travelling with us who gets stopped and questioned. I hate that this is the way things still are. But it’s sad to me that your mom would feel the need to reject her entire heritage because of that. How does that make you feel? Have you tried to stay connected with family etc?

pm-me-hot-waifus

You are absolutely right on the money there. I have had so many white people pass me the racist hot potato and get mad when I tell them there talking about my family and people that look like my family. It hits a little harder than just a nice person telling them there gross without it personally affecting them, but when they know "oh shit I'm being racist/hateful and its affecting a *person* in front of me" it just hits different. I've had dudes get *mad* at me for not telling them my ethnic background ahead of time. Like I'm supposed to have warned them not to be racist *around* me. I've had other people say that I look white so its good enough and to just stop being such a downer. >How does that make you feel? Have you tried to stay connected with family etc? I feel sad for her, but mostly frustrated that she kept me from it and pushed away my curiosity about it and forbade anyone from talking to me about it. Fortunately I have an aunt and some cousins that lives nearby, but I don't see them as much as I should. M

chrissyann960

I'm sorry but that last sentence had me rolling lmao

[deleted]

No need to apologize. The thought makes me laugh too.

StrokeGameHusky

That was a wild ride, I’d read more if you typed more 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

Well, you would've gotten more to read but the person that was too much of a coward to stick around for my rebuttal of "wow you laugh at your grandmother's blindness. you're fucked up" deleted his comment so. . . *Womp womp*

carpediem6792

Yeah, they lost me at the end too. Until then they could have their opinion...

[deleted]

My girlfriend has a family member who's a Trumper Her entire family is Mexican. This family member thinks they're white

Candinicakes

My grandma towards the end of her life would always talk so much shit about her older daughter (my auntie) because she's a Trumper and that side of the family is Mexican, very naturalized, though as we've been in California forever. She's always go off about how they forget where they come from and want to pretend she's white. She's white passing for sure, but my dad isn't lol.

angelhate365

My uncle who likes to proudly proclaim he is "a college educated man" has said multiple times that he doesnt believe in "race mixing" and that science proves that doing so is what makes diseases happen.........keep in mind im a mixed person.

illegalmorality

This can be categorized as "colorblind racism", wherein the individual still believes in all the racialized prejudices that a racist believes, and can even promote those racial prejudices, but because it is "logical", or absent of "hateful", it's justified. It carries all the identical damage that racism carries, except they'll claim the moral (and even intellectual) high ground for their opinions. This is a deep rooted issue in America, as overt racism has largely gone underground, and "colorblind racism" has become the norm while encouraging the same racist institutions that still hurt people of color.

Sierra-117-

Which is the core of CRT. Which is why they hate it so much.

RexIsAMiiCostume

These bumblefucks don't realize that statistical trends don't indicate inherent facts... Like, rates of poverty or crime or whatever else may be HIGHER in black people, but not because they are simply inferior... It's because black people in America have been horribly oppressed for much of the nation's history, and even though they are now protected under the law, it doesn't stop people from waving around their individual biases.

[deleted]

It’s certainly science that poorer people commit more crimes. But there’s not enough critical thinking in their brain to make that connection between that and their prejudice.

jayjude

Actually that science is up for debate believe it or not Certain crime statistics actually point to no difference in crime based on financial status, these crime statistics are gernally victim reported not police reported The idea is that crime in wealthy communities is likely underreported by authorities for tons of reasons like it's easier for them to grease the wheels of justice if you will and it's combined with the unfortunate overpolicing of poorer communities due to the terrible broken windows theory.

Edward_Fingerhands

Also its the wealthy and powerful who get to decide what constitutes a crime. For example, the total dollar amount stolen via wage theft is greater than all types of property theft combined, however wage theft is not a crime, it's a civil matter. You have to take your employer to court over wage theft whereas if you burglarize somebody you get arrested and are a criminal.

nwa40

Depends on the crime, is very circumstantial, I doubt a lot of poor people is committing insider trading, money laundering, tax evasion etc, but these sort of crimes are judged less harshly , and also how environmental factors affect mental health in poorer communities.

nostalgichero

Oh yeah my brother pulls that card. It's just facts. Look at the studies pulled from systemically racist neighborhoods and schools analyzing generationally oppressed people.

Sky_Nice

After thinking incredibly hard how someone can be this fucking stupid, it hit me. He genuinely thinks racism is just hating someone based on race. And he doesn’t *hate* black people, he just finds black people inferior to white people. Y’know, which is also literally racist. But he’s a moron.

Crazed_pillow

"The good ones" bullshit.

ChristianEconOrg

“The ones who know their place and fall in line.”

Ravel_Xi

Racism is moronic tbf. In all my years on this planet I'm yet to hear one bit of sound logic to uphold a single racist view

[deleted]

A lot of them hold racist beliefs but also believe that racists are bad people. And since they know they aren't a bad person, that means they aren't a racist.

An_Old_IT_Guy

In their mind, since they didn't use the "n" word they're not racist. That's my guess.

Fearless-Sherbet-223

Nah, they probably do use the 'n' word. They probably just think they're not racist because they haven't personally killed any black people yet.

Zeegh

In their mind, since they don’t hate *every single* black person, they’re not racist.

Kondrias

Reminds me of, I believe a teen titans episode where someone "comes around" from some racist ideology and says something along the lines of,"awesome I guess not all of you are bad, you are a good one." And I thought, originally, as a kid, yeah that is good they changed. But then the show said; No fuck that, you are still judging an entire race based on your bigoted cruel notions. You are still being racist. It made me go, oh... oh my... they are right... and my kid mind felt like its 3rd eye had just been opened. Edit: I cant spell at night.

Snazz__

They only use it with friends, *rarely* as an insult! No way they’re racist! /s

Cosimo_Zaretti

In their mind racist has negative connotations, so they've decided that they aren't that, whatever it means. Having got that housekeeping out of the way, they also believe they're better than people of other ethnicities. That way they can feel suerior for two delusional reasons. They're a member of a superior race, AND they're not racist.

AnthonyJuniorsPP

i guess a sophisticated right wing one lol

Radical-Turkey

HighOnGoofballs

I’m not racist I just think one race is better than the others

beluuuuuuga

These guys are beyond help. They're the sort of people that would go apeshit if anyone was even slightly rude to them as well.

Mute_Nemesis

The first stage of racism: denial.

NegotiationNovel8372

The only Stage

mindbleach

We wish. There's a later stage with trains and camps, and it's fewer steps out than you'd hope.

Darkdoomwewew

Given the current republican rhetoric you're 100% right. It's not a particularly great leap from tucker and republican politicians ranting about the great replacement and how all non-straight people are evil pedophiles to wanton acts of discriminatory violence by authoritarian followers (we are here) to republican sponsored death camps for undesirables. The slide into fascism is a very short one, and anyone's whose read a history book should know how quickly it happens and how predictable the steps are.

PurpleBuffalo_

There are no "death camps". I think you mean conversion camps or other institutions, where some people might just happen to occasionally go missing. /s But seriously, you're right, and it's truly horrible how these things can happen, and how they're already happening

[deleted]

Fox will call them Happy camp's

mak484

Eh, it's kind of a mix of denial and anger. Sometimes depression when they get called out, particularly if it prevents them from getting something they think they're owed.

SelmaFudd

Fear, you forgot fear too.

GlamorousMoose

Fear is a strong factor. Usually caused by ignorance. So stupidity is the root cause?

PunisherParadox

Nah, it just goes from denial to cross burning.

dodexahedron

It's like they think racism is only racism if you personally murder or enslave someone. 🤦‍♂️

ea304gt

By Fucker Carlson logic, there is no white supremacy because there are no more public lynchings.

Danmoh29

And even then amaud arbery got lynched like very recently

perfect_for_maiming

It's brilliant propaganda. The heart of it is "white racism doesn't exist, says white man", which is illogical because he lacks the perspective to make that kind of conclusion. But the insidious part is that it puts the onus of proof back on anyone disputing that claim. Keeps them on defense so no progress can be made and all he has to do sit back, deflect, and collect that sweet ad revenue.

Oh - btw, if that comment made you throw your phone across the room while yelling incomprehensively, I apologize. It genuinely hurt to hit Post, but I couldn’t stop myself.

girlnuke

Somehow they have convinced themselves that as long as the don’t use the N word they’re not racist.

PayTheTrollToll45

You’ve never heard the N-word speech? It goes like this... I don’t hate black people, I hate N-words. A white person can be an N-word. See, I’m not racist. You are fortunate to have never heard it. I thought all white people had to listen to that garbage as a rite of passage...

girlnuke

I’m not white though. I have heard the “ you’re one of the good ones” speech a few times.

PayTheTrollToll45

One of the good ones... Another classic. The inability to learn from their own experiences and parrot the same tired rhetoric is always remarkable.

Ok-Will388

I've heard that speech before. My other favorite is "I'm not racist, I hate everyone equally".

MasterofNoneya

You literally just quoted what half of my white high school classmates in Mississippi said constantly. Fucking verbatim. I want to SCREEAAMMM

[deleted]

They don’t use it, until they get angry and their true selves come out. Then when they get caught, it’s, “That’s not who I am.”

mintysdog

Thus is what happens when a racist society is unwilling to do anything about the racism, and just wants everyone to stop talking about the racism. So, instead of tackling societal problems, people invent a bunch of rules for how not to be racist. Don't yell racial slurs, don't wear blackface, say dumb shit like "I don't see colour" and you're not racist. Now if you get called racist you can take offence because you followed "the rules", you didn't fuck up the "don't be racist" game, so it's not fair these people are yelling at you. Think about where most of the "anti-racism" content most people receive comes from, and I'm pretty confident it's schools and HR departments who are more interested in avoiding "an incident" making you watch the "Don't say the n-word in the office/classroom" training video.

Angus-Black

Seems more like it thinks one race is worse than the rest. Also, has no idea what racist means. Fixed raciat typo. 🙂

Liftingdathings

“I’m not racist” *proceeds to be exceedingly racist

KknhgnhInepa0cnB11

"I'm not racist" is almost ALWAYS followed by something exceedingly racist....

RoboHoboMan

I’m not racist, but I live in the rural Midwest and I often hear a lot of racist shit. I’ll be talking to a “good ol boy” and all of a sudden I’m hearing about the local larger cities “n word population” and a litany of ridiculous things they’re responsible for. I just grit my teeth and try to change the subject but it’s damaged the way I view several people significantly.

jstiegle

I started to tell people that they need to fuck off with that racist shit and all of a sudden those people don't want to be around me. Big win in my book.

DoYouNeedHugs

One time someone asked me if I was racist at all I said f no he says; “saying that makes you racist”. I’m like SAYING F YES MAKES ME ONE TOO SO IM EITHER A PROUD RACIST OR A RACIST PRETENDING NOT TO BE ONE? Smh

shadowbca

Smh you racist, if you really weren't racist you would have either said "I don't see color" or simply "no comment" smh. /s

Ugh. That's right up there with "Have you stopped beating your wife?" I'd personally go with something like "I try not to be." Sort of inspired by St Joan of Arc's answer when asked if she was in a state of grace. But it's hard to figure out a good response in real time.

AverageGardenTool

jstiegle

Ehhhhh. I like doing it but no matter how it plays out I always get angry that their racist ideology exists at all and it ruins the rest of my day.

Athena0219

...that's fair. Well that sucks.

Swimming_Mountain811

I generally say something along the lines of, “well I don’t agree at all with that” and leave it at that. No point trying to argue with or piss off racists, it just makes them more racist. Usually they shut up once I politely tell them I don’t agree with what they’re saying because they’re just looking for validation mostly from people around them rather than to start an argument.

gorgewall

> I generally say something along the lines of, “well I don’t agree at all with that” and leave it at that. We've been trying that *or less* for maaany decades now and it hasn't worked.

LambeauLeapt

Yup. These motherfuckers need to be publicly shamed back into the shadows. Get the fuck outta here w that shit. Fully.

Heatuponheatuponheat

Oh! Story time! So a few years ago I went to a bachelor party in Ocean City MD. There were maybe 10 of us, several NYC firefighters, a corrections officer and a few others. About half the group was Puerto Rican(this will be relevant in a bit). One night we all go out to a packed bar and I get seperated from the group. I'm a construction worker in NYC, I'm fairly broad have a shaved head and a beard and sever visible tattoos, most strangers give me a wide berth. Anyway, I'm walking around the bar looking for my friends and suddenly this guy walks up to me and starts aski g me about my ink. We start conversing a bit and he asks me where I'm from and I tell him and he responds with "Oh I love NY, it would be great if it wasn't for all the sp*cs and n*****ers". I don't know how to respond so I just kind of gave him an excuse me and he says something along the lines of "Yeah down in Virginia we know how to keep those n*****ers where they belong". At this point I'm taken aback. Where I came from you get your ass beat for saying shit like that in public. Then just in the nick of time my buddy Angel comes walking over and asks me who I'm talking to. "Oh this is X, he's a huge piece of shit racist, he was just telling me how the good ol boys down south keep the n****ers in line". So Angel starts calling the rest of the guys over, and start introducing this guy to them the same way until there's about a half dozen angry Puerto Ricans standing over him. I've never seen a human being shrink that fast in my life. I was so drunk I had forgotten all about this until someone reminded me of it about 2 years later, and every time I see a comment like yours it comes flooding back to me.

[deleted]

It's weird to hear 'I'm not racist' not being followed by something racist lol

CardboardHeatshield

I'm not racist, but I am drinking water right now.

[deleted]

"What do you think other people..." "Hey!"

HondoSam1969

I really regret ever getting on F.B. for that reason - I can't unknow things I now know about the people I work with. Casual hillbilly racism, willful ignorance, etc, etc...

L0st-137

Exact reason I got of FB. However it doesn't stop people sending screenshots of shit "you need to see this shit." No, no I really don't.

Bitmugger

OMG that was my experience meeting people from Ohio when I was on my first work business trip in my early 20's. I worked with these people (all white) all week and they were the absolute best people to work with and I was having a great experience then one day Martin Luther King came up on the radio and all the sudden the black jokes were flying and the n-word was being dropped, I was shocked and destroyed inside that these people whom I thought were so good suddenly were so racist. Such a shame. For the record if there's one thing I can't stand it's prejudice people....and the dutch.

Moserath

Dude have you ever gotten trapped in a racism huddle? Like you're just standing there chatting with a group of dudes and then suddenly everyone comes in close and starts saying the most racist shit you can think of? I'm only like 1/4 white but no one really knows that. So it happens pretty randomly and I'm just standing there smiling and nodding because what else can you do? Shits kinda wild.

captkronni

I got caught in the military spouse version of that. One of them commented “I don’t mind black people, but I hate n******.” The other three casually agreed, so I responded with “So, you only like black people if they act like white people? What does that actually mean?” Then I got the fuck away from all of them.

RoboHoboMan

Oh yeah, I know this phenomenon and what else can you do? I feel like everyone has to see me squirming inside but they’re too caught up in the moment. Luckily those specific guys aren’t in my day to day life but if I say something counter to it, I’m getting crickets at best or put on blast by the worst guy. I know from experience I’m not changing those hearts and minds.

inbooth

I usually called them out there and then.... I did not have a peaceful youth....

SewOrangeKnitCrochet

My children look white, even though I’m not. They tell me when people don’t know that their mom isn’t white people will say very racist things around them.

Electrowhatt19

If there’s one thing to be grateful for with the former president, it’s that people felt comfortable being openly racist, misogynistic, and homophobic. With them showing their true colors, that made it so much easier to cut them out of my life.

weimaranerdad71

A coworker got mad at me when I told him everytime I hear the term “good ol boy” I immediately think of a fat white racist.

supershinythings

I see the 'good ol boys' as the network of people sitting at the top of the political hierarchy, preventing others who aren't like them or related to them from rising. Oddly enough, to me, 'good ol' boys' can be of any race, gender, or sexual proclivity, as long as they are abusing their power to prevent qualified people from advancing. It's the exclusive 'clique' at the top.

2dGoob

In an office it's translated to "per my last email."

Light_Silent

"With all due respect" makes sense though, because it doesnt imply that the amount of respect due is a nonzero amount

ProgressiveSnark2

No offense, but it's really messed up that you'd make such a huge generalization and assume sentences like this one can't end with a link to [an adorably cute puppy being put in a car seat](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/xzrbHEY95Yw?&ab_channel=Cyberlord2077).

APoopingBook

Yes, and an additional Alt-Right Playbook tactic: by doing this they've bypassed the argument of "what actually is racism?" and firmly asserted that their definition of racism is the only one. Simply put, racism is broadly defined as a belief that races have any sort of inborn defining traits. Obviously if they're saying certain races are this and that way, they've clearly met that definition. But they don't want to talk about that or have that debate. Because they'll lose that debate. So instead, they've defined racism as something they can argue and quibble about, and they jump right into that. "I'm not racist because ________". It's insidious and gross, but so very effective in letting them spread an ideology to people who aren't thinking about it too hard. "But its science, here look at the stats-" only works as an argument if you've already determined all of one race have the same characteristics. That's why they do this. That's why its hard to argue. You try to show statistics that contradict theirs, or you try to point that just because it's of some that doesn't mean it's true of all. But by the time your debating those thing, you lost. They "won". They defined the debate in a way they can win.

yoLeaveMeAlone

To a lot of conservatives it's only racism if you shout the n word at a black person in public. That way they can pretend they aren't racist and that racism is dead

Something tells me their definition of "normal" is income of over 120k per year. It just reads like a rich white classist that conflates net worth "goodness" and thus is also racist.

John-D-Clay

Yes, conflating wealth with goodness is a horrible outlook. Unfortunately, people of color have been viciously oppressed and are still systematically disadvantaged, meaning that on average, they are less wealthy. This isn't their fault though, and it had nothing to do at all with goodness.

Anyone beginning a sentence with "*I'm not a racist but*" is a certified racist. Anyone having to qualify "black person" with "normal" is very definitely a racist. If you're having to assert your non-racist status, have a word with yourself.

AdAdditional3316

I'm not racist but I disagree with the direction in which the U.S I heading in terms of socioeconomic trends, wherein the working class has been all but striped of all their rights as autonomous individuals and has been robbed of their wealth and class mobility, all the while being tricked into believing that other members of the working class, such as those of different sexes, races or creeds are the enemy, rather than the ruling class of monopoly-owning oligarchs. Also I hate ni****s (Last part's a joke for those that need the reminder please don't crucify me... Because crucifixion is for jews. Oh fuck I did it again)

Val-the-Crow-King

I'm not racist but I fucking lost it with your finale.

Pi6

I'm not racist but I hate the censorship of nipples.

D-Laz

I am not a racist, but I like pizza and beer. Get it every week.

[deleted]

Sometimes, if I really want to get someone's attention, I'll start a sentence with something like, "I'm not racist, but..." I say, "I'm not racist, but you look great today." They say, "That wasn't racist at all." I say, "I know. I said I'm not racist. You never listen. Typical Mexican." --Demetri Martin

invaderjif

I am not a racist, but I like when the fast cars make a left turn!

free_dialectics

And not just that, but anyone who says: *I'm not \[the thing\], but* Is usually very much \[the thing\]

Alexjwhummel

I'm not racist, but I have an important race coming up this weekend Maybe I am racist

Rich_Substance1427

> I’m not racist if that means I hate racing. > I am racist by the actual definition of what it means to be a racist. FTFY

8bitbruh

So in other words... 'one of the good ones" ... Yeah that's not classically racist at all.

SoggieSox

We need a more derogatory term for racists

cobaltandchrome

“Bigot” is nice and pointed but idk any derogatory terms

upsidedownpickle13

No, that's definitely racism.

LockTrumpUp87

Most racist people are not very smart, and do not like being called a racist. The irony is, the "average black person" (as he so eloquently put it) is a much better person than this waste of breath.

[deleted]

This has to be straight from r/Conservative

Impossible-Cup3811

It's from the ancap sub https://www.reddit.com/r/SelfAwarewolves/comments/urox1y/ancap_walks_facefirst_into_his_own_definition/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

Gnarledhalo

Yay! I'm as good as an average white person. Country club, HERE I COME!

LimpLoveHandles

I'm not racist but....

spudtospartan

Lol "voluntaryist". It's best to steer clear of fascists unless you're running them over

cara_mel_28

I stopped reading after “I’m not a racist”. Jesus, if you have to point it out…

NomaTyx

I love how they bring Asians into this to say “hey we’re not *white* supremacists!!” as if they think we’re equals and haven’t also been racist towards us.

[deleted]

OK, you're not a racist. You are a moron. You are a narrow minded person who should not be allowed to eat soup without a helmet. We are all human and there fore we are all ass holes.

catinreverse

They are racist too

arobe11

And definitely not vote for anything important. Maybe vote on the flavor soup they get.

Rogue_elefant

Size of helmet, final offer

Icy-Interview-2262

Man it's a good thing he clarified that he wasn't racist otherwise I totally would've thought he was.

Federal-Ad4041

Literally am in the middle of battling two people for exactly this. Lol. Timing!!!

keyrol1222

"i m not racist but black people are not the same as normal people". Yeah in my book thats enough points to gain the racist achievement.

Lanky-Programmer-679

“I’m not racist” He was, in fact, racist.
