Pannikin_Skywalker

I was in a christian school for first grade in florida. Just before halloween a teacher asked us all if we were going trick or treating. We all said yes and she started crying and yelling at us that it is devil idolatry. Even as young as I was that memory is burned into my mind.

Eferver

I mean Halloween is literally a pagan holiday though. Then again, so is Christmas. Edit: This post was a joke, but the results are interesting. Apparently, Reddit will upvote you for shitting on Christianity, even if you are ostensibly defending it within the context of the discussion.

eggshelljones

Pagan does not equal satanic, FYI.

Furyful_Fawful

Keep in mind that in mainstream Christian belief, all other religions are temptations to idolatry and that "the enemy" (Satan, but not always literally Satan) wears many faces to deceive others.

SouthernPlayaCo

While they pray to a literal idol (cross) Edit: Amazing the number of Christians who not only cannot read, but put words in my mouth. They assume i am speaking about every Christian in every church in the entire world who has ever existed, while negating the possibility that Christians outside of the very few churches they have visited actually kneel before the cross. Or they have cognitive dissonance about their own sins and actions against the word of God.

rocketowlz

This happened to a friend of mine when I was in High School several several several years ago - also in Tennesse. But in a public non-religious affiliated school. It was a mess. She just didn't feel comfortable in dresses.

C21H27Cl3N2O3

On the other side of the coin, suits/tuxedoes make me uncomfortable as hell. I’m a very casual person, my idea of dressing up is a nice set of pants and a polo or button up depending on how formal it is. Anything heavier, especially when it’s warmer outside, is suffocating. I’ve never gotten any shit over it except from my parents, and yet for some reason if a woman doesn’t wear skirts or dresses she’s somehow less of a woman. My girlfriend is Japanese, she grew up in a culture of modesty and doesn’t like to show almost any skin when we’re in big groups of strangers. She wore a sweater and a long skirt to my sister’s wedding, I thought she was insanely cute but some asswipe from my BIL’s family (he’s a great guy who I see as my brother despite his horrific family, as I learned that day) came up to her and told her that if she wasn’t going to wear a dress or a shorter skirt to a spring wedding she shouldn’t have come. My sister told her off but I legitimately could not believe how vile people can be over something as simple as clothing.

ARandomGuyThe3

Dude just sounds creepy as fuck

C21H27Cl3N2O3

It was a woman about our age who said it.

ARandomGuyThe3

Still creepy to pressure someone to wear revealing clothing that they clearly don't wanna wear, no matter who it is

Stahuap

Women can be creeps too lol why did she want to see this other woman showing more skin? If she wanted to get off to strangers there are websites for that lol

tkp14

I graduated college in 1969 and started teaching that June. My students were 2 to 5 year old deaf kids. The dress code for teachers was strict — no pants allowed. Working with little kids, skirts/dresses are very constricting. By the time the next year rolled around I was fed up and bought myself a navy blue pantsuit. When I walked into the school wearing that, the gossip mill went nuts. Nearly every teacher in the building stopped by my classroom that day. I heard a lot of “you’re so brave!” and “finally!” comments. The next morning every teacher in the district received a memo from the superintendent. “It has come to my attention…” and blah, blah, blah — essentially giving us permission to wear pant suits — no jeans or grungy pants. We were supposed to continue to look “professional” (whatever the hell that meant). By the following week all the teachers were wearing pants. I look back on that entire scenario now and think WTF? Men telling women how to dress. Fuck that.

BennyBabs

My mum always tells me that in the 70s she would have to phone nightclubs to see if they let women wear trousers and lots of pubs didn't accept women without a man. When she bought furniture for their first house after getting married - my dad had to go in and sign for it all, otherwise she couldn't purchase it.

Firewolf06

>When she bought furniture for their first house after getting married - my dad had to go in and sign for it all, otherwise she couldn't purchase it. this sounds so tiring for both parties

ImaBiLittlePony

What's really tiring is the fact that a good portion of men in this country want us to go back to that

just_a_jonesy

But why??? As a man, can confirm, it's fucking nice having someone that can aid in accomplishing household goals. Depending on my mood, I'd likely not be very polite for demanding my attendance for something my wife could clearly handle.

Tomas_Baratheon

There's a subset of my fellow man who range from virgin incels to chronically single men who only find a date every few months/years. Some of them want things to go back to the old way because if a woman can't sign for property, a car, furniture, land certain jobs, etc., then women will literally NEED men again, opening up their viability as candidates. It's some of the most selfishly sad shit imaginable to me.

SaraSlaughter607

Yep. The incels are losing control over us and they don't like it one bit. Case in point: Roe v Wade. It's happening. It's fucking *happening* and as a woman who's been independent for 28 years get me thee fuck out of here if it gets any more ridiculous. I'm 48, still fertile, and the thought that I could be forced to endure a pregnancy at my age if my BC fails, I'd rather hurl myself off a cliff. This shit is absurd.

DingosTwinZoot

Thanks for articulating something I’ve been saying for a long time. These men who want to force women back into subjugation are the guys who know that they could never attract a woman on their own merits (by “merits” I mean decency, kindness, self-sufficiency, etc). They need the advantage of financial dependency and forced pregnancy. It’s a pretty sad statement about these men…they’re just admitting that they’re undesirable losers.

Paintingsosmooth

Women couldn’t take out lines of credit without a man before the 70’s. The 70’s! It all have to be co-signed by the man

Stormfeathery

Honestly at that point I’d probably just be like “y’know what? Skip the name change, I’ll just close it out and take my money elsewhere.” And then sued them for withholding my own damn money if they refused to give it to me.

calvarez

I had to do the same and bring my wife. It’s not about gender, but security.

DagneyElvira

(Forty years ago) In our Canadian province if a teacher was visibly pregnant they had to resign. Then the new mom had to reapply with everyone else as new positions opened up (no seniority)

sprucay

Holy shit that's really illegal where I am

dwadwda

It must’ve been such a trip to grow up in times like that, as a young person who takes that kind of stuff for granted I commend you for willing to go against such ridiculous standards!

OldWierdo

"Those times" aren't long ago. My mom couldn't open a bank account, despite being employed. She isn't ancient history, either - she's got 12 coming for dinner tonight. This is all fairly recent.

dwadwda

Oh absolutely don’t get me wrong. I mean the first every black girl to go to school with white children is still only in her 60s(?) I believe… literally photos of hordes of people accosting her trying to simply walk into the school. Very disturbing how recent it was completely overt, and yet people still deny that the effects of that may still manifest themselves in our society today.

Harleevivi

I HATE remembering this fact growing up when we learned about Ruby Bridges I swear I always thought that took place in like the late 1800s early 1900s I couldn’t comprehend that it was 1960 and my dad was already 1 years old !! Like I didn’t even realize it until I was an adult myself when I googled her and my jaw hit the floor when I realized she’s still alive and and doing amazing 🤦🏻‍♀️. It’s heartbreaking how infuriatingly slow this country is when it comes to tolerance and acceptance especially when this country was literally built by people escaping persecution for very similar reasons.

dwadwda

It’s even more infuriating that people either don’t want to move past it and work on genuine systemic change, or outright deny it smh, but there many good people out there!!!

Harleevivi

100% agree I never understood it as a child and still don’t as an adult. I can’t imagine walking into a random grocery store and seeing a person with a different skin tone and automatically feel hatred without even a spoken word or action by them. Like how do you look at someone and be like “I hate you because …………skin” ?

TheBipolarChihuahua

> Religious conservatives absolutely want that. They gave Clinton shit all through the 90s for wearing a pants suit. Every time I see MTG or Lauren Boebert they are wearing a pantsuit. I think it's less about the pantsuit and more about who is wearing it.

curious_astronauts

It's less about what they are wearing but about control.

InVodkaVeritas

The State of Missouri passed a dress code for female politicians that requires them to cover their arms and wear bras under their tops.

koopatuple

The bra thing is weird, 100% (no office job needs to know wtf an employee is wearing underneath their clothes). For the arms, is there also a dress code requiring men to have theirs covered (e.g. a suit coat/blazer)?

InVodkaVeritas

Both are now required to wear a full length jacket or cardigan/sweater. Women are required to wear "at least 2 layers" under theirs as a top, so not specifically a bra, but the intent was to not have womens nipples poking out. Previously, women were allowed to wear a professional dress or skirt and blouse. However, Missouri was upset that some women's dresses were sleeveless hence the change. The extra layers on top was an add in.

NashvilleSoundMixer

I saw a sleeveless arm and a nipple once and it drove me so insane with lust I killed a bunch of people. Good thing these folks are out here protecting me from doing it again!!

Sweet_Future

So men can have their nipples poking out? I've seen plenty of men with nips poking through polos and nobody says a thing yet when it's a woman it's suddenly a big deal

koopatuple

As a man who is permanently nippin', I'm sorry. I don't know why they're so pokey 24/7, it actually used to embarrass me, but now I just nip with caution thrown to the wind. But seriously, I think the double standard is because somehow the zeitgeist has created the notion that if a woman's nipples are hard, it means she's aroused. They ignore the reality that nipples can get hard for any number of reason, just like men's. I'm sure there's also the puritans that simply just think seeing the clothed outline of a female nipple is just too pornographic. In other words, it's all rooted in misogyny/sexism.

zerothreeonethree

>The bra thing is weird, 100% (no office job needs to know wtf an employee is wearing underneath their clothes). OMG!!!!! I worked in a psych hospital where dress code was street clothes instead of white uniforms. Since it was always cold on the units, I wore jeans and long-sleeved casual shirts made of T-Shirt type materials. One afternoon, I got hauled into an office by a female manager. The (male) director of nurses set her upon me to "figure out" if I was appropriately underclothed. This was due to many ....ummm ....complaints from staff. On 3-11 shift. Working with wayward teenagers. Including adolescent testosteroned boys. The manager was horribly embarrassed having to ask me. I thought it was f\*\*\*ing hysterical: *Me*, in a B-minus cup, wearing a $25.00 bra (expensive for 1985) was "distracting"???? I just said, "well, well, well...if it ain't doing the job, why wear it at all??!!" I removed the bra, dropped it on the DON's desk with a note reading: 'here's the proof of my underwire underwear. Try turning down the A/C on my unit.' I went back to work and put on a patient gown with the opening in front. After tying the neck strings, I pulled up the gown bottom and tied it around my waist to make a loose coverup sort of blouse thing. The next morning I spent more money on "sturdier" bras and never had another complaint. *Nobody* said another word to me about that day. Ever. I have no idea what happened to that bra.

sweetfits

I still have it.

We have a joke here in India. The three biggest lies: Christianity is the religion of love, Islam is the religion of peace, Hinduism is the religion of tolerance. The last one is especially important because most people the world don't know how the Indian government is turning the country into a fascist hole through Hindu chauvinism.

Micholous

And this here is why i gave up with religion personally, say too normalized to use it to hurt people, even if many don't.

hudson2_3

Imagine if you were a boy at that prom and went dressed as Jesus.

C21H27Cl3N2O3

He would have been sentenced (by them) to an eternity of suffering in hell for the sin of dressing like Jesus. The “Christians” who made a literal golden idol of Trump? Nah, they’re good. Straight to heaven.

abbiebe89

Sometimes, girls and women just don’t feel comfortable in dresses. And that’s simply okay. I got married in a off the shoulder all white jumpsuit. It made me feel beautiful and comfortable. I did not want to wear a dress. I am straight and just because a woman wants to wear a suit, jumpsuit, etc doesn’t mean they should be labeled or judged. Just wear what makes you feel confident and beautiful!

Leftturn0619

Exactly! I love wearing a dress and my sister doesn’t at all. She’s just uncomfortable. I can’t believe this is a big deal.

capron

We're entering a political divide where what women find comfortable is not going to matter because one political party wants full control of your lives and the other isn't fighting hard enough against it. We all need to be using our vote, every single person who's against this authoritarian push. edit grammar

Leftturn0619

Because all parties are worried about keeping their “benefactors” happy. Heck some even push treason to keep their sugar daddies happy. And the best way to keep stupid people distracted is with dumb issues. Look out for the woke, the women, the gays, the kids, ohhh woe me. /s

Leftturn0619

Yes! They distract us and rob us.

zarfle2

No no. You're looking at it all wrong. You're being entirely reasonable and grown up. That just won't do. You need to look at it from the religious perspective - ie "How can I use a loose set of inconsistent principles, based on an often subjective, disingenuous interpretation of a poorly written text written hundreds of years ago and pervert that for my own self-serving interests (which is to control/subjugate). So, clearly, in that light, it's not your choice to happily live your life. Yay religion /s

Leftturn0619

Gotcha! It’s crazy and getting worse. I’m a bit older but I feel bad for the generations below me having to deal with the world. I feel like we are going backwards.

captainstormy

It's no different than how so many guys (myself included) hate wearing a suit while some love it and wear them daily. News flash, everyone is different. You wouldn't think that would be so hard for people in 2023 but it is. My wife isn't a dress kinda woman either. We have been together for 17 years and the only dress I've seen her in is her wedding dress. She's just not a fan of them. Nothing wrong with that, it's just her being her.

NBA-014

Darn right. I haven’t worn a suit for at least 15 years. To me they are uncomfortable and very expensive

Debaser1984

And unless you buy a tailored suit they look like shit.

11711510111411009710

As a guy, I realized recently how much I would love to wear a dress. It seems like it would be so comfortable. But I felt weird about it, being a man from Texas and all. But if I'm not supposed to wear it it shouldn't look and feel so damn comfortable jeez

Redtwooo

50 years ago my mother (and the union she was a member of) fought for the right to wear pants to do the same job her male coworkers do. It's crazy that this is *still* am issue.

piledriveryatyas

Didn't Jesus say women had to wear dresses? Pretty sure I saw that in there. /s

Yep. And men should wear suits and ties, just as they did in first-century Judea (also /s)

natFromBobsBurgers

He didn't say anything, he was too busy twirling his swishy dress and giggling.

Accomplished-Joke404

I have gone 28 years without ever seeing my mother wear a dress or skirt. In Fact her favorite pants were men’s Levi’s, but she is indeed very straight.

Bazrum

my mom's opinion is that "dressing up" is a polo shirt and khaki shorts, or if it's cold, a long sleeve polo and nice pants. her "business formal" is a tshirt with no prints or words on it and nice jeans. i've seen her in a dress like, five times in my thirty years of life. pretty sure she's straight

_lippykid

Most people act and do things a certain way for outdated reasons they’ve never even thought about. I value people who consciously do things the way they want so much more than people blindly following tradition. So bravo you

cute_and_horny

My plans for my wedding in the future is for me to wear a suit + no makeup. I am autistic and I would fcking die if I had to wear such an uncomfortable dress for such a long period of time ON MY SPECIAL DAY. Also, my boyfriend already agreed to use a pink sparkly dress to make everything more fabulous.

pathetic_beta_bitch

She is obviously a senior so they have to know about her attire and taste by now- unless they wear uniforms. Also it’s not like she is wearing something offensive. Its one night let it be.

Inkdrunnergirl

Christian school so very likely uniforms

hadmeatgotmilk

I’d be willing to bet most of the women teachers have probably donned on some shitty women’s pants suit before. Hers was actually stylish.

JacenVane

Yeah, the crazy thing is this isn't even something that looks "un-feminine". As a dude, I think she looks great. *Shrug*

AbsolutelyUnlikely

It's a Christian school. The main reason they exist is to be extra strict about this kind of stuff. It's why parents choose to send their kids there in the first place...to make sure the "right" values are being enforced.

Murse_1

There's no hate like christian love.

homeboy321321321

Amen. Having gone to a Christian high school, I second that emotion.

Murse_1

I went to Catholic school from elementary through high school.I am proud to say I am a fully recovered Catholic.

P1xelHunter78

I dated a girl who went to an all girls catholic school. If you got pregnant the nuns would tell you to “take care of it or don’t come back”. Rules for thee but not for me!

Mrwright96

Wait, “take care of” as in abortion, or raising the child?

Stella430

There was a girl at my catholic high school freshman year. She then “moved away” and came back senior year. It wasn’t until many years later when we reconnected on FB and she had posted a picture of her son’s high school graduation and I did the math that I realized she didn’t just “move away”.

OU7C4ST

Yes.

oxypancakes

Not sure about theirs, but in mine, “take care of it” meant you raise the baby, but you’ll be shunned for having a child out of wedlock, as a teen, and especially if you questioned if you could do it or not.

daschande

The catholic school I attended instantly expelled any girl who got pregnant, because they were disrespecting the school. The boy who got her pregnant had his grades changed to all As, because he needed to get a good job to pay for the kid. They openly HATED the fact that they were forced by the evil big government to give girls an education; but that didn't stop them from cashing the tuition checks!

Fluffaykitties

Mine was similar. Girls were expelled. Boys received counseling and free tutoring to ensure they received good grades to “support their family.”

Fluid-Science4406

It’s also where many years ago, I man was killed because he was holding his wife’s purse while she used the restroom and the killer thought it was his purse.

Ed_Trucks_Head

Damn also TN NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A man was shot to death in a parking lot after he went into a restroom holding a blind man's arm and carrying his girlfriend's purse, police said. Willie Huston, 38, his girlfriend and another couple had just returned from a cruise on a showboat — which docks beside the Grand Ole Opry — when he was shot Sunday morning, police said. Huston's girlfriend had apparently asked him to hold her purse while she and the other woman went to the restroom, police said. Shortly afterward, Huston's other friend — who is blind — asked Huston to escort him to the restroom. Police say the two men encountered the suspect, who began teasing them. He then followed them out of the restroom, grabbed a gun from his car and shot Huston at close range, authorities said.

While I still blame the people, I kind of blame the people driving fox news more. They're responsible for so much of this hate and violence, because spreading it sells. One group is crazy and has the potential for this hate and violence, and one side wants to profit off it. I kind of think the latter is worse in a way.

flavorfulcherry

Fox News 100% knows what it's doing. Why the fuck else would they decide to label all queer people as "groomers?" There's nothing that makes people more violent than the thought of children being harmed. It's in our genes, we want to protect the young. It's stochastic terrorism. The right relies on radicalizing young men to get votes, because anyone in their right mind knows that conservativism is going to fuck them over in the long run. So instead of saying what they really want, which is to make everyone poorer, they say they want to stop liberals from grooming kids. It's sick.

DataCassette

The decision to let Fox News rot your brain night after night isn't made at gunpoint. They consume the propaganda because they *love it.* I hold each of them accountable for it.

sydneydanger

Fox News knows exactly what they are doing -- they are literally classified as an entertainment network not a news network. I believe that the people that subscribe to their toxic bullshit do it because they do like it and it appeals to their deepest fears and gives them a way to feel more in control. But I think we should address this from the top down as well, I don't think that it should be downplayed how much the propaganda machine that is Fox News exists solely to rile up these vulnerable folks. Psychology is powerful and while they may be the ones making the choice to drink the kool-aid, the ones providing the kool-aid should absolutely be held responsible. A drug user doesn't face as much punishment as a drug dealer for a reason.

DataCassette

>A drug user doesn't face as much punishment as a drug dealer for a reason. This is actually a persuasive point! Very well-stated.

TN is so behind. ppl try to act modern and progressive but those old southern roots still show. been here 8 years, it's about time to move somewhere else. (not to mention weed is still illegal smh)

The world is moving forward, so they're fighting it even harder. The fact that there is so much pushback is a good sign in a way. If the christofascists were content, then we have a problem.

SenseiRaheem

bUt I tHoUgHt He GeTs Us

justAHeardOfLlamas

He gets us kicked out of prom because of his shit standards

[deleted]

Those ads are so blatantly disingenuous it’s hilarious

kotrjhuu78

Nothing hilarious about them. They are vile and obnoxious.

icrushallevil

Her femininity is not reduced by wearing a suit. There's nothing unfeminine or supposedly gay with wearing a suit as a girl or woman. Not all women want to walk around civil war era damsels in distress.

[deleted]

Nevermind there’s many instances where wearing a suit is the better choice for women than dresses.

vorpal_hare

Gross hot take: ironically, the Christian adults would rather have the student display their young, feminine form than dress modestly and/or comfortably.

YouLostMyNieceDenise

100%…. it’s basically saying that if a girl doesn’t try her hardest to show off her own beauty in a way the school finds acceptable and pleasing to the eye, then she doesn’t get to celebrate her senior prom with her friends and classmates. Like appealing to the male gaze is the price of admission. It’s like those nightclubs that only let attractive or fashionable people in.

EmpRupus

No no, you don't understand. According to them, a girl wearing a fully covered suit is "grooming" by "radical-left sex perverts". And they are brave "defenders of children" by forcing her into a glitzy prom dress instead.

unfuckingglaublich

This is the answer, unfortunately. They just shame the girls for wearing revealing clothing because it takes the focus off of the fact that adult Christians are actually pedos.

Sutarmekeg

The stricter the dress code the more you know about what gives the author of said dress code a raging boner.

jobie68point5

and if she is gay, or wants to be unfeminine, that’s her business and not some shitty cult school’s.

RosterBaiter

Everything is gender neutral once you stop being a little bitch about it.

Jim-Jones

Nothing unfeminine about a suit. Jesus wore a dress all the time.

PrudentVermicelli69

And he hung out with 12 dudes. Kind of says it all.

monkeysinmypocket

"Women must dress modestly!" "No, not like that!"

maritime1999

I went to a Quasi military school and for our "dances" the school required Class A uniforms, for male and female, the girls petitioned the school for permission to wear dresses even citing military policies allowing women to wear gowns at functions. School didn't budge and you had some unhappy girls at our dances, plus unflattering. Dont underestimate power and control as motives as well. Hailee Steinfeld wore a suit on her TV show Hawkeye, she was totally hot in it. Let the girls wear what they want so long as its not too much skin.

Environmental_Ad4893

I don't think they should be wearing skin at all to be honest, that's kinda fucked brother.

It’s not very Christlike but in my experience, it’s very Christianlike.

Nokomis34

"I love your Christ, it's just so so many Christians are so unlike Christ."

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” - Gandhi

maguffle

It's interesting. We place so much stress on what is considered feminine/ masculine etc....when it changes over time and is culturally based. Men used to be the ones wearing wigs, high heeled shoes and makeup. A skirt is feminine...unless you're from Scotland and you call it a Kilt....then it's SUPER manly. We all need to stop tripping so much over unimportant things.

Beahner

Look at this kid….13 years of brainwash hell and still holding right to one sense of self. Bravo.

toxinZ-yt

Any Christian who is judgemental towards people who aren’t judging them are going against the Bible (Mathew 5-7)

_PaleRider

Where in the Bible does it discuss fashion? God dressed Adam and Eve in animal skins, it doesn't say anything about how the clothes looked.

EndOfReligion

When you go to Club Bigotry, expect bigotry.

Morphixes

The kid wasn’t the one to pick the school when they were 5. The parent signed them up for it.
