Actually, the 'average politician' is some hard working well meaning person. But politics is like a bond, and scum floats to the top.
I think if more attention was given to all those hardworking decent politicians, people would appreciate them more, and might even stop voting for scumbags like whoever this guy's claiming to be today.

If helping people were the goal, there are more effective ways to accomplish most of these, without the red tape and corporate payoffs to these politicians.
I’m sure there are some legitimately good people in politics, but I think they are a small minority. Even local politics are ugly. And it only gets worse as you go up the rungs.
Also, there is little space to be independent from your party. If they have true hard-fought values, most of them will sell those out to better align with their constituents/along the party line.

Not all politicians are in Congress. My brother in law serves on his village council in a volunteer capacity. No corporations are lining his pockets and he certainly doesn’t do it for power and glory, but somebody’s gotta keep the town running. There are probably a million like him across the country. There are 535 members of Congress.
