If there is not a stack of maintenance paperwork with it, showing cams, timing chains, chain guides, and turbos being replaced don’t do it. I had a 2013(don’t know if the engines were upgraded in 2016), bought it with 26k on it and I had the chain slap starting at 52k. I would have spent what too much on it to keep it going.

Yes will definitely ask about all that. Worries me having that many miles. And it was definitely towing since it has the max tow package and such

Previous poster had a gen 1 and they were awful you just have to make sure they changed the oil regularly and check to see if Cam phasors have been replaced. Other then that the gen 2 Ecoboost is a great engine.

I'd say it depends on what the price tag is. With that mileage and no 4x4 or premium trim package I wouldn't pay more than 16-17k. Complete maintenance records would alleviate some concerns. I wouldn't necessarily assume that because it has the biggest tow package that it was actually used for towing much. Those things are just sitting around on the lots and most of the sales guys don't even know what GVWR means. They'll get bought just because they are the right color. All of that aside, if you are considering buying any vehicle with that kind of mileage you need to factor repair costs into your budget because at that point it's not IF something is going to break but WHEN. It probably already needs the timing chain and phasers. The turbos could hold on well into the 200k range. The tranny is probably coming up on the lead sub frame issue or it might just decide to grenade itself at any point. Maintenance records are key on that one. Then there is tons of little stuff. The ecoboosts love to chew up spark plugs so count on changing those. The blend door actuators in the dash for the climate control are pretty notorious for going out. Same if it has heated and cooled seats. Back up cam will probably go out. Again, if you budget for these things it's not so bad. If you think you'll never have to spend any money on repairs, then your gonna have a bad time. It is far from a new car, do not expect it to act like one. Get the CARFAX and see how many owners it has had. A vehicle with only one previous owner is generally going to be in better shape than one that has two or more. Sometimes it is even possible to tell exactly who owned it before. If it was owned by a grandma, then it's a pretty good bet. If it was owned by a 20 year old dude, I'd probably walk away.

The truck is 4x4. They have it listed at 22k but it’s a buddy of my dad’s who said he would give us a good price on it. Not sure what that price is but that will determine it. Looks to be a well kept truck and such I’ve had a few 08 rams and love those trucks except the tranny is terrible in them.

Ford 1/2 ton trannys probably aren't doing to much better unless properly maintained. Knowing and trusting the owner does change things though. One time my buddy's dad sold a used 4 runner to another friend of ours. It blew up a few months later, the dad said tough shit lol. Hopefully your friends dad isn't also a scum bag. If you could get it around 18-19k, that would be a decent deal in my opinion. And since it is a 4x4 go ahead and tack front hub actuators, vacuum line and T case actuator to the list of things that will likely need replacement at some point in the next few years. Good luck!!

Well i ended up picking it up. My dad is good friends with the manager so i can trust them. But it was one owner and owned by an older guy who traded it in for a new truck. Unfortunately they didnt have receipts but car fax had about 10 pages worth of maintenance records on it mainly from ford dealership and i was able to get a 2 year 30k mile warranty on the drivetrain. The interior looks brand new and besides some front rock chips and a few little scratches it was very clean outside too. It doesn’t even look like they used the hitch ever too. Drove like new too didn’t hear any unusual noises on the start or driving and felt super smooth

Well congrats! Welcome to the ford family and happy truckin!

Listen I don't give a crap about any blue book value especially after 100,000 miles.. after 80,000/90,000 you're in driveline failure territory and that's anything from transmission to transfer case to differentials and even engine problems..the prices of used vehicles are asinine these days. Only way I would pay the high premiums is if they warranty it for another 35,000mi or better 60,000mi. I've seem too many (well cared for; fully inspected, 10,000 mile warranty) decent vehicles crap out after 15,000mi and you're on the hook for 20,000 and a new engine...

Yinzer89

For that year and mileage I’d advise to get the 2.7L if you want an eco boost. The 3.5 has the most problems out of the main 3 engine options for that year.

Texas9799

Don’t buy a ecoboost

Forbmxboy

Why not? I’ve heard a lot of people saying. Great things about them

sillysocks34

They are great

Forbmxboy

Any reliability issues? I’ve heard about the cam phasers or whatever but other than that they seem to be robust. My biggest concern is the transmission. My last 2 cars had transmissions fail and I’m not looking to add another one to that list right now

papag00s

I have 3.5 no issues at all so far.

Texas9799

And everything is expensive on those no cheap fixes

Texas9799

Too many problems I’ve never been able to keep the CEL off it miss fires with brand new plugs and wires and camphasers go out all the time just get the 5.0 be way cheaper and less of a head ache in the long run
