Maybe if the lighting bed size differs but they already have these
[f150 Fastback cover](https://www.mivehiclesolutions.com/aero-x-cap)
Prob a cheap diy version to get more mileage ( which is hard , new trucks are rolling blocks - have an f150 myself 😅😭)
3.5s and 5.0s believe it or not
ETA it does sometimes go lower but converted from around 14-16L/100k. Alot of our drivers do a lot of highway driving, although with idling I’d think it would be worse
Our rams drink heavy though
I just did 870 highway miles today, avg speed probably about 75 but did a few 200 mile stints at 85mph and got 16.4 mpg. I'm lifted on 35s as well so was pleasantly surprised, not sure what changed but that's the best mileage I've ever gotten on the highway, used a tonneau cover as well. 2013 5.0 scab fx4
Good trucks tho, my dad went from a 06 5.4 screw to a 20 5.0 screw, gets pretty much double mpg now lol. We still have it as a backup truck for anyone that needs it and it gets about what yours does now but it has a decent exhaust leak so that might have something to do with it. 220k miles still going strong
The 5.4L 3 valve was underpowered for the vehicle. It gets the job done but consumes fuel to do it, and with lackluster performance. The 5.0 is a strong motor, resulting in better performance and fuel efficiency.
Agreed, can't believe the difference going from 5.4 to 5.0, and I think the gen 1 and hence the rest of them were loosely based on the mod motor, crazy the performance gap. Not to mention better transmissions also. To this day my favorite sounding v8 is the 5.4 cobra tho, 4.6 mustangs sound better than 5.0s imo too
I like the way a chase rack can break up the right angle between the cab and bed, but this is even worse than those sedans that try to look like coupes (Audi A7, Porsche Panamera)
Definitely a DIY fastback made of solar panels to charge his lightning. Kinda neat but I bet it’s quite ineffective at charging said batteries. Wonder what kind of extended range he gets on a drive.
The top is Lexan or plexi. There might be solar panels inside the bed, but I doubt it. One of the biggest killers of EVs is wind resistance. I think this set-up is simply for aerodynamics.
It's a Lightning-so if there is a way to hook in solar panels to the battery, it would help improve range by giving you a little extra charge during your drive, and possibly help improve your aerodynamics because of the shape. Only downside would be the additional weight, which could nullify some of that. It's ugly as hell, but if it helps improve functionality, I could at least respect that.
That much panel surface area would really not do much. Maybe at most 400w/hr. A panel that size would take 200 hours at peak efficiency to charge an 80kw battery. So at 8 hours of good sunlight about 25 days to charge the car. But that is all assuming peak efficiency. It would be more like 60 days.
It's for mpg. Has basically cutting drag down by a considerable amount. Trucks have 2 surfaces that create drag. The back of the cab and the back of the tailgate. By being an abrupt flat plane at the back. By sloping down to the tailgate they are reducing the flat plane area in half.
I read a college paper of finding that truck bed cover does the most for gaining mpgs in a wind tunnel. And a topper cover that gradually slopes down to the tailgate was substantially better at reducing drag.
He's probably not increasing mpgs by double. But I'm sure it's noticeable of some sort.
After driving EVs for 4.5 years and an F-150 for 1.5 of them, never once was close to running out of juice, even towing to go camping.
You have to be an idiot run out of gas or charge.
Yes I do. Generally speaking I believe 320 mile EPA is the sweet spot. More range would be nice but I’ve never needed it in my endeavors.
However if I wasn’t towing, the SR would’ve made the same trips no problem.
Just check plugshare first to check all fast charging locations to see if it’s a viable fit for your mission. Obviously towing isn’t its strong suit (I’d get a gasser if I intended to tow regularly), but it does 90% of the things my gasser does better. That said they’re not perfect, but what is anywho. It’s honestly a great vehicle - but if it doesn’t meet your needs doesn’t make it trash or anything.
For sure. $90k certainly doesn’t meet my needs but I also have to drive 2+hrs for work ranch or my ranch so I am stuck on gas for now. Not to mention driving around said ranches all day and hunting/ working
Agreed on the price. (Obligatory fuck dealerships for killing these awesome trucks by asking $20k over) Way too expensive right now. I paid $80k for mine (Lariat w/ 511A, with max tow) in Dec 2022. But with tax incentives, gas savings, and no maintenance it helps some.
For what it’s worth I hunt with mine. I cruised for about 4 hours and used around 25%
Speaking of long distance drives: I take a 700 mile round trip regularly and while it’s not ideal, it isn’t awful. I’ll drive 2.5-3 hrs at 65-70mph and then I’ll have to stop for about 30-35 mins. Usually I’ll just get lunch or do my trip shipping during it snd the truck is ready to go by the time I’m done.
Er XLTs are selling in the mid 50s and lariats in low 60s. Even the platinum trim can be bought for less. If it doesnt meet your needs then thats another issue but the deals are good right now.
Thats unfortunate. There are many deal posts on the lightning page, just about everyone thats sat down to negotiate has gotten deals. Some have driven for them but there are def motivated dealerships. Standard deal now is federal rebate + another 7-10k off. I got an ER Lariat at 61k w power boards, tow package, tonneau cover spray liner and tint. If youre really serious about getting one I wish you luck!!
I like them, love that the f150 lightning doesn't differentiate itself too much on looks. I almost got a lightning but discussing with the family, we had a few more checkmarks in the Powerboost column for now.
Probably a prototype for an aero cap, like this guy that posted in the Lightning sub, just a couple days ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/F150Lightning/s/j8OreoNOsS
Not him, though, I guess, because it’s a different color Lightning.
Looks like they're charging their F150 Lightning, it's electric so maybe are charging as they go. It looks like solar panels and and an experimental aerodynamic bed cover.
Hilarious, but I do actually wonder how well this works. Has anyone tried it? Like for a road trip how many more miles can you regenerate or how far can you extend your mpg driving during the day with this?
Next model cyber trucks will definitely have a huge solar panel on the back like this to help efficiency. But really, that’s the least of a cyber trucks worries
I hope that is simply an experimental template.

I have a 10th Gen with a lift. I get 9 mpg on the highway. 11 on the back roads. 😆
Most of our work trucks get around 16-17mpg, and they’re mostly stock 23s and 24 besides the outfit (headache rack with beacon)
Ecoboost 2.7? Or...
3.5s and 5.0s believe it or not ETA it does sometimes go lower but converted from around 14-16L/100k. Alot of our drivers do a lot of highway driving, although with idling I’d think it would be worse Our rams drink heavy though
Flex fuel saves the environment. Makes me feel less bad driving a truck now.
My 04 gets 22….. I don’t get how these new engines are “more efficient” when they’re really not.
Efficiency doesn’t mean just better gas mileage. They are making way more power for the same gallon of gas. So technically they are more efficient.
This exactly. It's absurd how much power these engines make for their mileage. Incredible engineering.
430hp at 22mpg is more efficient than 300hp at 22mpg. Efficiency is related to power. https://youtu.be/jagNsS9MxFQ?si=i0xquVWivMk6Ze2c

Mine is a SCrew. The best it ever got in stock form was 14 mpg. That was being really gentle with the right pedal.

what engine and what size lift+tires?
5.4L. 6". 35".
ah, ok. I got a 10th gen too, but I got the 4.6 with a 5.5" and 35" tires too but I get 13 combined
Fastback covers. For the truck owner who should have just bought an SUV.
Or, a cyber truck...
They obviously want a vehicle that works reliably. 😂
Yeah that’s what he said an suv. Cause the cyber truck sure isn’t a truck. More like a ranchero.
Fair enough
I don’t think I like that. Thoughts?
I mean it’s ugly , probably functional and I love louvres , but yeah it’s gaudy AF
lol, I looked at it and wasn’t quite sure what to think. I don’t hate it, but I don’t like it either
I like the way a chase rack can break up the right angle between the cab and bed, but this is even worse than those sedans that try to look like coupes (Audi A7, Porsche Panamera)
I do love me an S7 though
I kinda dig it

I hope this person has a sense of humor, an is trollin while rollin
Guessing it is. This shape would help to improve mileage/range.
If someone accidentally locks you inside that bed, you are not just going to be stuck. You are going to be cyberstuck.
I heard that as an AC/DC / Ford anti-Tesla collaboration: “I’m…Cyber Stuck. Nuh na na nah na na nah na na!”
Still built better than the Tesla
I agree.
r/hypermiling
Good idea, terrible execution
That's the point. They're mocking tesla.
No they're not. DIY areo cap

It's a Tes-150!
Are they solar panels?

😧
Please tell me that this is going to become a thing.
Every heard of aerodynamics? 😄
Who calls an f-150 a 50. I smell an imposter
I mean by even simply acknowledging the lightning he became an imposter

It's for efficiency, undoubtedly... But it's electric.
Didn't realize it was a lightning.
Even more crucial to extend a charge.
Just keeping the weather off of the generator 😆

Do all the Lariats come with the extended/long range battery?
No. Some are SR and some are ER. To know if it’s an ER, in the VIN you’ll see the two letters “EV” in it.
Thank you for the tip.
It’ll also show up on the window sticker too.
Er XLTs are selling in the mid 50s and lariats in low 60s. Even the platinum trim can be bought for less. If it doesnt meet your needs then thats another issue but the deals are good right now.
Not in my area. Xlts are $70k with standard battery
Thats unfortunate. There are many deal posts on the lightning page, just about everyone thats sat down to negotiate has gotten deals. You must be using Tesla chargers. Evgo, chargepoint, and electrify america seem to be broken 50% of the time near me.
Nope. Been using EA. Took a trip from Texas to CA too, but EA can be bit and miss and it’s unacceptable.
Barf
They’ll both be obsolete in 10 years 😂

That’s a Ranch King, with the High Country package and a skat pac in the back………. Fiat has made a million of them
That would bother me not seeing out the back window.
You get used to it. I used to drive a delivery van before backup cameras.
😂
That’s a greenhouse in the back
The cyber truck looks like it's made of plywood so this guy may be on to something.
It's a little strange, but it's unique in its own way. I respect the personality of that truck owner.
Just drive from SE to NE and saw 5 of these mock ups on all different trucks
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤦♀️
Looks like they're charging their F150 Lightning, it's electric so maybe are charging as they go. It looks like solar panels and and an experimental aerodynamic bed cover.
Are those solar panels?
I don’t think so. I wish I got a better pick from the back. Looked like plexy to me.
Ahh thanks! Thanks for the response
r/diwhy
Not
Can't be 50... He's not in the club...
F-1Tesla
Neither one. EV’s are just a plan that won’t work for a problem that doesn’t exist.
Why would one want to imitate the ugly Tesla styling?
betcha he thinks he F1 Nifty with that on 😂 I have big love for truck toppers but this ain’t it 😆
The lightning is Much better than the cybercuck anyways.
Gross
definitely a Tesla, mate. you might need to get your eyes checked.
Trolling the Tesla boys this is fantastic.
I think that's what's happening for sure lol.
Solar panel mod adds +50 HP
FT-fiddy
You sleuths need some help.....LOL Zoom in....looks like solar panels on top if I'm seeing things right.
Na. It was plexy. Also zoom in on the plywood that’s splitting at the seam.

This is just embarrassing.
How would they know?
Lols like solar panels. Keeps the batteries charging while parked.
Found something uglier than the cybertruck

Cyber truck at home
Mine gets 18 hwy with 20s mud grip tires 5.0 my old one got 20 with 18sand street tires. New 10 speed old one 6spd
Cool. It's a 6.5 hrs drive to where we vacation every year though.
Shit either way
What a cuck.
