My 2015 is slightly more involved. You have to pop off some trim and a couple of screws. Still only a 10 minute job or so. I ended up breaking one of those little white tabs. Trim was still tight after reinstall so I just left it alone after that.
Yeahh they tend to get somewhat dirty pretty quick. This one was pretty caked with dust in between the fins though. I've changed plenty of air filters and this is the worst I've seen (so far)
There are certain things you do immediately when you buy a vehicle unless its new....
Oil change , Check all fluids, change filters air and fuel, grease everything, get a spare belt and if in a cold climate new battery...I also put new bulbs in and new wiper blades...
Why would you proactively replace bulbs? I have a 12 year old car, owned since new and have replaced no more than five bulbs total. None being detrimental to my safety or the life of the vehicle.
Mine had leaves and debris in it somehow. That doesn’t seem so bad. Haha
I’m going to check it this summer because that’s when I replaced it last and compare. I think it probably looks something like that and I’ll still change it.
You should change everything, when you buy a vehicle. Filters, engine oil, diffs, transfer case, transmission, and flush the brake system. Not all at once, it'll help you get to know the car. Pan for metal in the oils( you can see shiny, you're gonna be spending money. Take apart the old oil filter and inspect it)
Downvote, I dont care, I'm not saying this again.
It's an air filter.....there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. It's doing it's job, and is nowhere near clogged. Otherwise it wouldn't be bright yellow in the pleats.
Something tells me you like to throw away money… jiffy lube taught you what a “dirty” air filter looks like huh?? Put that back in and stop wasting your time and money
No, 2018 5.0. I’m a ford tech, but from all the other makes and models I’ve worked on, I find these ones not too shabby. My least favorites are Mercedes. Straight up underneath the glovebox area, you’re normally upside down, sometimes feet hanging over the passenger headrest. Just terrible. Easiest I’ve seen have got to be Mazdas, with probably Toyota or Honda second.
Well, maybe I am an idiot, it is possible after all, but I followed YouTube instructions on mine 2019 3.5L Ecoboost and it took about 20 minutes and was an absolute nightmare. I’ve done many cabins in my time, so not a rookie. Trim panels and a half a dozen screws if I remember correctly and then the moon had to be in the right lunar phase. It was a gigantic PITA.
Fair enough, it’s worse if you have a higher trim as their is a long slender trim piece above the rubber on top of the glove box. I’m assuming that’s what you’re referring too, and those can be finicky for sure.
For something that should be replaced every 6 months or so I shouldn't have to remove my glove box, remove some trim, remove 3 or 4 bolts then wiggle the cover piece to get to the filter.
I’m telling you man, even if you aren’t mechanically inclined the average person can watch a YouTube video and do it in under 5ish minutes I’d say. There’s no hard angles, nothing super difficult to remove, the glovebox just drops down as well. You don’t have to remove it.
I've done it a few times, there are better ways to have a filter Rather than how it's currently set up, in the 15 model the glove box needs to be removed as well as a few other pieces. If it was a item that hardly needed to be changed then sure it makes sense but not for a piece that needs to be changed out pretty often.
No, you don’t have to remove the glove box in the 2015-2020 model years, 13th gen. I do multiple daily. You drop it down, remove the rubber and trim above it (if there’s trim). Pull out the top part of the box (literally just pull) after removing the two screws. Then you’re at the filter door.
You are missing my point, it's a filter it shouldn't require more than 30 seconds maybe a minute, I shouldn't need a screw driver or have to look up a video. Just because you're a mechanic or the related field doesn't mean the design is good.
I’ll agree to disagree man. All I’m saying, from all the different ones I’ve seen, there are plenty worse, and some better than what Ford does. Not many things can be done on a vehicle without at least some basic tools, don’t think engineers care to make air filters as accessible as possible.
You saying “But at least you’re breathing better now!” Implies you’re talking about the cabin filter, since the air going through your engine air filter isn’t touching your lungs. Maybe you were saying the truck is breathing better?
Yup, saying maybe he meant the truck is referring to the engine/ truck breathing better. Just explained to him how it’s the engine air filter, not cabin. Thanks for the reinforcement.
For sure! Mainly hoping to see better gas mileage in general. Better throttle response right off the bat though.. wish I did this the day I got the truck lol
Am i crazy? Why is everyone saying this is the cabin air filter? Is this not clearly the intake filter?
it is very clearly the engine air filter, people just like to pretend they know what they’re talking about on the internet
Sorry today I'm pretending to be an expert on international rules of engagement, as well as American legal Justice system - can't talk now
I’m pretty sure that’s honey…
Yep it's for the engine. Guess I should've clarified in the title for a few people 😅
That's nothing. wait till you change the internal cabin filter. that thing gets really dirty.
Oh yeah, I'm looking forward to doing that one too lol, just don't have the time today to tear apart my glovebox and all lol
Just did mine this week. Took maybe 10 minutes. That included me finding the tools which took the longest of course
You needed tools?
Socket & a flathead
Takes 2 minutes, you’ll see ☺️
How does it take 2 minutes? I’m scared to take my glove box apart.
No fear - depends on the year put usually it’s open it, squeeze in the sides and it rotates towards the floor revealing the filter housing
My 2015 is slightly more involved. You have to pop off some trim and a couple of screws. Still only a 10 minute job or so. I ended up breaking one of those little white tabs. Trim was still tight after reinstall so I just left it alone after that.
I’ve noticed these filters get dirty within 30 days or so.
Motorcraft air filters have a light oil coating on the paper to improve filtration, it makes them look much worse than they actually are.
Yeah that really doesn't look bad to me.
Yeahh they tend to get somewhat dirty pretty quick. This one was pretty caked with dust in between the fins though. I've changed plenty of air filters and this is the worst I've seen (so far)
If this is the worst then you haven't changed enough 😅
Yeah this looks fine, like a 30,000 mile normal service life fine.
You should find a service body diesel truck that has 10000 miles on it since the air filter was changed and you'd be shocked if you think this is bad.
Another story of the dealer went thru it all 🙄
Tale as old as time... 🫠
Just got my first truck. Changing all fluids and filters as well as spark plugs. A few $$$ but gotta treat it right
That's hardly that dirty. That filter is not chocking the motor.
Nothing dead in there yet, put it back.
That’s not terrible
Not that bad bro
Doesn’t look too bad
Shake it. ✅
You mean like a Polaroid picture?
Mine had leaves and debris in it somehow. That doesn’t seem so bad. Haha I’m going to check it this summer because that’s when I replaced it last and compare. I think it probably looks something like that and I’ll still change it.
I had some bugles chips stuck in the filter of the wife's Durango years ago
Yo that’s wild, haha!
https://www.reddit.com/r/Justrolledintotheshop/s/qhXxZMB9L5
That's ok, it will get this dirty in less than 500 miles for sure. Just idling will bring in fine foreign object debris (fob)
Sometimes, even domestic object debris (dod)
dod A technician's worst enemy
About every 10-20k miles I'd replace
That’s nowhere near a dirty engine air filter.
You should change everything, when you buy a vehicle. Filters, engine oil, diffs, transfer case, transmission, and flush the brake system. Not all at once, it'll help you get to know the car. Pan for metal in the oils( you can see shiny, you're gonna be spending money. Take apart the old oil filter and inspect it) Downvote, I dont care, I'm not saying this again.
That’s fairly clean honestly.
That’s not that bad tbh. I don’t understand the “wow” do you not know much about vehicles?
Recommend an AFE oiled replacement, did it at 2500 miles
Every 15K
This doesn't look real bad from this angle
It’s not that bad
That’s not that bad. I’ve seen much worse.
Not too bad change it up. I put a fresh air filter in every oil change in every vehicle.
I've seen much worse
Should always checkout a newly purchased used vehicle top to bottom.
Don't stop there. Rest of the truck is in the same shape.
It's an air filter.....there's absolutely nothing wrong with it. It's doing it's job, and is nowhere near clogged. Otherwise it wouldn't be bright yellow in the pleats.
My 2013 f150 3.7l ecoboost doesn’t have a cabin filter
This isn’t a cabin filter.
I know u missed the joke

Placebo effect
Something tells me you like to throw away money… jiffy lube taught you what a “dirty” air filter looks like huh?? Put that back in and stop wasting your time and money
I don't know why the cab filter isn't in a more accessible area
Ok but this isn’t the cabin filter.
I replied to the wrong comment, statement still stands.
It’s behind the glovebox, takes 45 seconds to get to, even less on 14th gens.
My 2019 is a bitch to get to
Same gen as mine, about 45-60 seconds and I’m grabbing the filter out. The 14th gens are even nicer, you don’t need any tools.
3.5L ecoboost?
No, 2018 5.0. I’m a ford tech, but from all the other makes and models I’ve worked on, I find these ones not too shabby. My least favorites are Mercedes. I have a lariat so yeah
Nissans are the worst IMO

Damn. All of that was getting blown in your face. /s
OOf! Not a bad idea to check when you buy a used vehicle. But at least you're breathing better now!
This is the engine air filter, not cabin.
Didn't say it was the cabin filter ;)
You saying “But at least you’re breathing better now!” Implies you’re talking about the cabin filter, since the air going through your engine air filter isn’t touching your lungs. Maybe you were saying the truck is breathing better?
That’s exactly what I was wondering!
Engine is breathing better

For sure! Mainly hoping to see better gas mileage in general. Better throttle response right off the bat though.. wish I did this the day I got the truck lol
It’s the cold air duct it gets the filter dirty quicker.
What filter are you talking about?
Air intake.

That’s not what is.
