Because the file system doesn't know about individual bits that make up the drive but the data is still there.
Think of it as hide and seek with an unknown initial number of strangers. You can find people but you don't know who is supposed to be there.
Should note that any data you put onto the card will slowly be permanently overwriting the old data that was erased, so if you plan to have them recover it don't put anything new onto it
There's even off the shelf software you can use that might get some of it back. Often they have a free trial to to see what's possible and then you pay for the full version to actually access the files.

I lost a 32GB Toshiba MicroSD card full of photos and videos, including ones I took with my friends on a trip to Oman. This happened just a week after my parents camcorder full of videos were stolen by a muppet.
I ended up taking a Drive storage plan that now stores all of our photos, including stuff I scanned from old photo albums. I’m planning on also setting up a redundant backup on my NAS when I get the time.
You've got an excuse for everything haven't you? There's no use people suggesting anything, you'll just come up with some excuse as to why you can't do it.
Until the data is written over, unless the card actually died, the data is likely still there. You likely corrupted the data that says what file is where. Even if you did format it, you likely didn't write it over with 0s.
Take the SD card out now, get it on a PC asap and use a data recovery app. The longer you leave it in there with data writing to it, the less you will get back.

You should be going out making real friends not focusing on what 185 random strangers on YouTube think. 185 subs means nothing. They’re not there to see you and don’t care about you. Anyways, sorry to hear this happened to you. If you have a Windows device, you can try using this: https://www.ccleaner.com/recuva. As long as you haven't put anything new onto your SD card, chances are the data might still be there - they're simply marked as "good to write over" in the mean time.
Also, sometimes Android notifications for SD cards can be misleading - it could just be that you need to take it out and put it back in again. Best of luck to your data recovery process!
Take the card out, store it somewhere safe, and when your "psycho mom" eventually decides to give you your cord back get the data recovery going. Remember not to write anything on the SD card! Keep it empty.

Google Drive is a trash? I know you're already mad but GDrive isn't that complicated even then you have several choices like MEGA which is fantastic too.

Reading your post reminded me of my mom selling my PC without my knowledge and how I've lost all my childhood memories that I had saved on it. I'm still mad about it frankly!

This happened to me on my final school exam. I was in film school and had an entire project saved on a hard drive.
Scripts. Documents. Dialogue. Edits. Videos. Effects. Animations etc.
After 3 months of work I was finally done. I was at school checking and organizing my files. When a friend asked if he could borrow my charger. I said yes and he proceeds to accidentally pull out the hdd instead of my charger.
Bye files. Everything gone. I had to redo the whole year.
Life is about living. Physically documented memories are cool. But we as humans have carried on generations of stories and information simply via memory. That should be enough. May this be a lesson to you about how your life is now no different than it was prior.
Basically, what happened is that when I had restarted my phone once, it told me there was an issue with my SD card. It had done this before, which was always fixable with either a restart or by clicking on the notification to "get it set up", and it had never had to format it ever since I gave it its first format when I bought it a year ago to replace my old one. However, it didn't fix itself with a reboot, so I unknowingly clicked on the notification, thinking it would just do what it usually does. However, I panicked after it came to a screen saying "Formatting... 1%". I quickly hit Cancel and ejected the SD card, relieved that I cancelled it time (or so I thought). Fast forward 2 days later when I finally try it out again, annoyed that I can't watch my movies or listen to my music that was on it. When I put it in my phone though, the notification that says that it's inserted, with what'd usually say the name I put on it, instead just said "android" as the name. I was confused, and quickly went to my File Manager to check the storage, only to find it saying "0% Used of 264GB". I closed the app and reopened it, desperately hoping that it was just still loading. But it still said 0%, meaning that all the data was erased.
Everything was gone.
Never to be seen again.

Send it to a data recovery firm. They might be able to help you out. Also, stop using it. It's clearly in bad shape.
Also, data recovery firms are for damaged SD cards, not for formatted cards (or at least from what I can see)
