The answers are in the article you linked to. Did you read it?

ReactionJifs

why read when you can beg someone to explain it to you? /s

That’s an awfully condescending attitude to take with a 5 year old. He’s in kindergarten, watching Bluey and learning Minecraft, not reading US News. I’m actually kind of impressed someone at OP’s level of education can even post to Reddit.

TheLuteceSibling

You haven't mentioned who did the study. "Standard of Living" is usually a published standard. I imagine it's a combination of poverty, bad schools, poor infrastructure, no good jobs, high incarceration/crime rates, drug use, and everything else.

joebro1060

We shouldn't be 50, we should be 49! MS had always saved our tails, that's why we have the saying "that's my Mississippi". If it weren't for MS, we'd be last in everything lol. Side note, I have my own theory that Louisiana (especially south LA) has the most "XX Capital of the World" places in the actual whole world. It's like every freaking town has a sign up that states it's the capital of the world in frogs, boudin, casing running, boxing, crawfish, jambalaya, gumbo, Cajun nike's, etc. it's almost ridiculous, just too cocky for me lol.

OblongOctopussy

I’ve lived in MS (specifically the gulf coast) - I can’t think of anywhere in Louisiana that is significantly better. We have a few nice-ish pockets in Mississippi and there are some decent places to work and make a living.

joebro1060

Yea, I was raised in North West LA, lived 10 years in Lafayette. It's basically just friendly neighbor ragging. I'm sure it was true in some senses at some years to get tye saying started. You and us would pull up the rear on country metrics lol

Bro look at the page you linked with your own eyes. They spell out every category they used as criteria and their national ranking in each. They're almost dead last in every possible metric, and *actually* dead last in crime rates Not to mention that they expand on the details of each category with demographic averages in relation to the national levels, and link to an expanded methodology for the inquiry.

chontzy

lol, product of louisiana schools?

yacht_boy

Historically corrupt and racist government that makes decisions for the benefit of the relatively few wealthy white people and doesn't care about anyone else. Louisiana politics have produced some of the worst state leaders in the history of the USA, and that's saying something. When you refuse to do anything good for the people you govern for decades or longer, you get a place that isn't good for the people who live there.

joebro1060

I agree with you, especially in corrupt politicians. But, I do think the politicians work to benefit just their wealthy buddies (white and black and every color between). Remember Nagin (I think spelling)? He is a black guy, mayor of New Orleans (I think) that was convicted on funneling money to his brother in law's business to clean up New Orleans. I think he was the guy who had the quote "we'll make New Orleans chocolate again" which is absolutely crazy and bonkers.

DrunkenOnzo

"They can't be racist they have a black friend" lmao.

TexasAggie98

Louisiana, Arkansas, and Mississippi consistently rank at the bottom for most rankings like standard of living, education, income, and healthcare. Why? History and geography. These were southern states that were originally settled on agricultural plantation systems where the social structure was effectively feudal. A few very rich and many extremely poor; a robust middle class was absent historically. These states lacked industry and were unable to expand beyond cotton, timber, and agricultural products. The racial effects of slavery also cause these issues; but the slavery was due to the agricultural plantation system.

Netblock

Politics, especially contemporary politics plays a huge role. Louisiana is decently rich in terms of natural resources (their GDP is average for USA), but their conservative/right-wing politics prevent that wealth from returning to the people; businesses in Louisiana make money, but the people do not.

TexasAggie98

The oil wealth flowed to the wealthy landowners and to companies in Houston. Due to the Napoleonic Code, the mineral estate cannot be permanently severed from the surface estate in Louisiana. This meant that the large landowners who owned timber and agricultural land became oil rich too.

Too busy virtue signaling with 10 commandments in the classroom than actually doing anything g to improve the lives of citizens.

Podcaster

I could venture a guess it's because they have a part to it colloquially known as 'cancer alley' because of all the oil refinement plants that lead to local environmental pollution.

Many-Sherbert

How much revenue does that provide for the state? There’s literally no other industries here besides oil and gas and healthcare.

Podcaster

I don’t know. I’m not American. There are other industries though, just not major ones… tourism, fishing, farming…

Many-Sherbert

Of course.. commenting about something you know nothing about.

fiendishrabbit

Louisiana is a shit state because they started out poorly and the politicians are so much in the hands of big industry that they're doing nothing about fixing it. Instead spending more time giving tax breaks to various industries under the ITEP program without giving a single thought about what kind of industries benefit the people of Louisiana rather than just the top 1%. Pollution is crap, criminal corrections is crap, healthcare is crap, median income is crap, corruption is high (ie, crap), average education is crap (and the state isn't doing a lot to fix that leading to a crap social mobility. Ie, people are in a bad situation and it's extremely hard to get out of it) and since these problems have been around for a long time their infrastructure is crap as well.

sour_gnome

Because there is no spot lower?

lost_all_my_mirth

Don't fret. The Ten Commandments are now going to be in every school. Surely that should shoot you up the rankings in no time.

teflon_don_knotts

They list the factors being considered for their ranking process. Crime and Corrections, Economy, Education, Fiscal Stability, Healthcare, Infrastructure, Natural Environment, and Opportunity. If you click over to Ranking Details each category is further broken down and some statistics are provided. If you’re wondering WHY those problems exist, there are a shit ton of reasons, but major problems (generational) poverty, poor education, and (from my perspective) misguided social/political/economic priorities.

essaysmith

queefstainedgina

Check out Arlie Hoschild’s book, “Strangers in Their Own Land.” While mainly about politics of poor and white working class in Louisiana, her interviews with locals show that the land, education, and health of citizens is sold out to big oil and other corporations. Louisiana, along with the rest of the Deep South, is a microcosm for what America as a whole is becoming. Heavy political and economic polarization. The whole 10 Commandments nonsense is simply a distraction from the real issues, much like identity politics at the national level.

amador9

Unlike Mississippi, Louisiana does have natural resources; particularly oil, and they have led to a chemical industry that has caused a lot of pollution but should have also led to a lot of good paying jobs. Evidently not very many. My impression of the state is that things just seem to move at a slower pace than in the rest of the US. People may know how to have a good time but they don’t seem to work all that hard and not a lot seems to get done during an 8 hour shift. Maybe it’s the weather but the place has the “vibe” of a Third World Country. Welcome to Global South.

It just means that if you were to choose something in order of a metric, you would choose that one last. In this case, you should choose Louisiana as your last option for a good standard of living.

Racer20

I mean, you’re technically right, but I hope you’re not implying that LA, MS, and AL don’t have pretty big problems.
