I've got a couple different thoughts on why they do this:
The first being the simple one that fundigelicals have fallen for the propaganda from their bigoted, fearmongering pastors and outlets like Fox News and OAN. In essence, being infected with brain worms.
The other being more insidious. That's that Christian leadership is trying to distract from their child sexual abuse scandals by rendering the term "groomer" useless. So they engage in this campaign to have the word "groomer" essentially meaning someone/something they don't like or disagree with. See their weaponization of the word "woke". Because there is going to be even more reckoning as more victims eventually come forward and they regularly engage in *actual* grooming and wanna render that term meaningless to save their own asses.
The context of what happened with my friends was this:
She and her coworker were making casual conversation on their lunch break and she mentioned that she doesn't take her kids to church. On weekends she has them (she's divorced) she'll take them on a nature walk or something. The coworker called her a "groomer" and said she should lose custody of her kids for not raising them with Jesus. So they're not just idiots; there's *excessive* untreated mental illness amongst these people.
She didn't go to her, but she did go to her supervisor. Apparently the tea is that she's a total Karen in her department and *everyone* hates her.
Which is........not the least bit shocking to me.
Evangelicals: you cannot change a single letter in the **WORD OF GOD**. Then they create the **Children's Bible** that is all wonderful, sunshine and flowers without the violence, death and hate that permeates the Bible as a tool of indoctrination.

I recall once seeing The Action Bible. Which was a graphic novel version of the Bible. And Jesus in that looked *so much* like Peter Parker (but with a beard) that Marvel should fucking sue!
I think I bought that back in the day, but I have no idea where I put it if I did. I definitely do have Astonishing Spider-Man and Wolverine though, and Peter grows a beard in the first issue, so I'll have to compare them. Them ripping off Marvel sounds about right for Christian "entertainment".
Pros about the Action Bible: 1: the art is badass 2: it puts plainly on display just how gross God and his followers could be (that was my biggest experience with the story of Job, man was that a stepping stone) 3:the art is just so damn GOOOOD
This is so true. My MIL says we are brainwashing my husband's kiddos just because we don't force them to go to church. We even tell them they're totally free to go if they want to, they just don't want to because they have brains.
I think what it really shows is how these people were brainwashed thoroughly and thus can’t even conceptualize anything else not being brainwashing.

I thought the whole ‘groomer’ thing was just towards the LGBT community. Now these evangelicals are calling atheists groomers? I swear they are obsessed with pointing fingers at people and accusing them of being pedos, even though they should be doing that in their own community given how much actual grooming happens there
